felicity's relationship with her daughters exploded the day these charges came down. the daughters lost all trust in their mother. >> reporter: earlier this week, huffman penning a passionate letter to the judge claiming her decision was out of december operation to be a good mother, believing that all i was doing was giving my daughter a fair shot. >> she felt that her daughter was a good actress and she deserved a good chance to audition for a school that would have a good acting program, and she didn't want her to be held back because of her math scores. >> reporter: all this as her lawyers insist in newly released court documents the judge exercised leniency when reviewing this case. her lawyers saying the prosecution is drawing unfair comparisons between her and other cases presented. the defendants in the cases the government cites were also typically the master minds of the schemes, adding that in the cases the government cites, individuals like miss huffman, retail customers and the scheme's ringleader, were often not prosecuted at all. now the probation office siding with huffman on this one,

debate. there's been great feedback online. our moderators obviously there from abc news so we're going to say good things. but they really did keep it moving. it was three hours but we really got to hear a lot from the candidates on policies, on their plans. there was still obviously some attacking, some back and forth, some good tv moments. >> yes, but impartially there was just substance there, which i think was important to advance the conversation as we get closer to 2020. >> you're absolutely right and the moderators did a fabulous job, all four of them, very pointed, direct questions that helped move it along. the president also claimed more people were watching him speak in baltimore than were watching the democratic debate. >> but there were watch parties across the country with voters gathering to hear their favorite candidates. abc's briana stewart caught up

with some of the viewers in houston. >> reporter: the texas democratic party turned what was the debate watch party into a midnight rally. that music that you're hearing is andrew yang's walk-in music. he was just on stage talking to the very voters who were watching him last night. booker came in, so did castro. they're all now in the back at a dnc after party. but right before all of this happened, i spoke with some voters in the commercial break during the debate and here were some reactions of what they had to say. >> very happy to hear about medicare for all and an option. i think that's very important. like they said, we should have a choice. don't force to us just have to be in it. >> out of all of them i feel julian castro is the one focusing on immigration. every time immigration is spoken of, he has a plan on what to do with our asylum seekers. >> no one is talking about student debt tonight. we only got a little bit of people talking about big

solutions on climate change. and so there are so many issues that are affecting young people who have really made texas a battleground state. and we weren't hearing people talk about those issues. >> i really liked warren's take on things. so like the two -- the tax on big corporations sounds really great to me, i think that's great. >> reporter: guys this rally, i should say party, is ongoing. the candidates are still inside shaking hands with voters, but also some top donors and top democrats in the state. it will be interesting to see how what they said on stage plays out. >> thanks to our briana stewart, former producer here, who's been out on the campaign trail. a new storm is threatening parts the hurricane-ravaged bahamas. the government there says about 1,300 people are unaccounted for following hurricane dorian. that number is down from 2,500 after a check of shelter and evacuation lists.

>> aid is increasingly being brought to remote locations by independent groups. one using a decommissioned coast guard cutter to deliver tons of relief supplies and a small airline using sea planes to drop aid with parachutes. meantime a new storm system is threatening the bahamas. accuweather's chris nallan has details, chris? >> well, will and janai, we are talking about another system here over the bahamas and strengthening potentially into a tropical storm as early as saturday morning. could it be embracing or impact, i should say, parts of the southeast coast of florida? or does it steer further into the gulf of mexico? it all depend on this the steering currents as we roll forward. saturday into sunday we have to keep an eye on the southeast coast here with some heavy rains. israel is being accused of planting spying devices within the past two years near the white house and other sensitive

locations in washington. >> that's the conclusion of three former senior u.s. officials with knowledge of the matter. israel's prime minister calls the accusations a blatant lie. the trump administration is rolling back obama-era regulations for clean water protections. the 2015 rules place restrictions on polluting chemicals that could be used near streams, wetlands, and other bodies of water. agricultural groups cheered the move but environmentalists say the rollback could cause health hazards and increase environmental cleanup costs. 145 american business leaders have signed an open letter to the senate demanding urgent action on guns. the ceos of some of the country's most recognizable countries call gun violence a crisis, and they say doing nothabout it is quote simply unacceptable. their letter calls on the senate to pass a bill requiring background checks on all gun sales and other provisions. and the faa has revoked the serf an american airlines mechanic accused of sabotaging a flight. the emergency order is effective immediately.

>> fotis dulos entered a not guilty plea on evidence tampering charges. his wife hasn't been seen since may. the two are involved in a contentious divorce. police say they found mrs. dulos' blood on trash bags believed to have been handled by her husband. and in an ohio courtroom, a shocking verdict in the trial of a former high school cheerleader. >> she was facing charges for allegedly burying her newborn in her backyard. but a jury found her not guilty of murder. here's abc's stephanie ramos. >> we the jury find the defendant not guilty -- >> reporter: a former ohio cheerleader accused of killing her newborn baby girl and burying her in her parents' backyard breaking down while listening to the verdict. now 20-year-old brooke skyler richardson acquitted of the most serious charges. the jury clearing her of aggravated murder, involuntary manslaughter, and child endangerment charges. prosecutors claiming richardson didn't want to be a teen mom, so when she gave birth alone at home in 2017 just days after her senior prom, prosecutors say she killed her daughter and buried her, never telling anyone. but the defense countering the

yet. a strong showing from most of the front-runners. here now is a bit of post-debate analysis from abc's cecilia vega. >> who do you think won, lost? who had the best night, who had the worst night? >> i do think joe biden had a good night in the sense he came out a little more forcefully than he has in the first two debates. the second debate, did no harm but i don't know if he did himself any favors. today he sort of -- he was more aggressive and he did go after some of his counterparts trying to establish that distinct division between what he is arguing is a need for return to stability, promoting his electability, which is what we've seen driving his boost in the polls, and trying to draw distinction between his vision and what he will argue is those of his progressive rivals who are arguing, you really need to just shake up the entire system. >> i think it was status quo. great debate, status quo debate,

i don't think it really changed the race. that's good for biden, it's good por warren, it's good for bernie sanders. i think they remain the top three. if i'm going to pick a winner i'm going to go out on a limb and say mayor pete. a really solid debate, carved out a coherent position in the center-left, firmly in the biden camp on the health care issue. and he kind of rose above it in that moment when they were all fighting and castro went after biden and the back and forth. and he said, you know -- he made an appeal to democratic unity. >> but if you're one of the -- yeah, go ahead. >> if you're one of those candidate on this the wings who really had to have that kind of spotlight-stealing moment to really try and give your campaign a boost and a jolt, did we see that? >> i don't think we saw that. i think we saw jolt from castro. and i don't think it was a very good one and i think it probably helped joe biden and hurt castro. >> wow. and other analysts say senator elizabeth warren managed to walk away unscathed. nobody attacked her, nobody

the coast guard wants to know who's been making hoax calls and threats over the radio used at sea. >> officials say those calls have been made from off the gulf coast of florida. the most recent one received was a month ago. the threats are being made by a male voice against coast personnel and assets. penalties for making such calls can include up to ten years in prison and $250,000 in fines. we're getting our first look at a subpar escape attempt, south florida police tracking down a suspected car thief after he hijacked a golf cart. he was among three suspects on the run last saturday. police say he took the cart from two golfers who were in the middle of a round. he told them he thought it would be faster than running. i guess he's right. but that is a serious breach of etiquette, among other things, on the golf course. >> not fast enough, subpar, that was good. coming up next half hour, the new development in that young university of tennessee fan bullied over his handmade t-shirt. after an outpouring of support
