and the question now is, will it matter? did anything shake up the race? abc's serena marshall begins our coverage. she's at the debate hall. the last woman standing in houston, serena. you've got the highlights. good morning. >> reporter: janai, will, good morning to both of you. definitely the last one standing or maybe the first to arrive but when you look at this debate, the one thing these candidates could agree on was they want to see donald trump out of the white house. a single night of debate. the smallest roster yet and for the most part the punches not landing on each other but the president. one of the night's biggest moments when beto o'rourke was asked, are you really in favor of confiscating guns. >> hell yes, we're going to take your ar-15, a--47. we're not going to let you use it against fellow americans anymore. >> reporter: gun control, kamala harris blasted president trump claiming he played a role in the recent mass shootings in el paso. >> i mean obviously he didn't pull the trigger but he's certainly been tweeting out the

$12,000 over the next year, all part of yang's universal basic income plan. >> this is how we will get our country working for us again. the american people. >> reporter: already there's questions isetr vte federal election law. the trump campaign pouncing this morning saying yang is, quote, openly buying votes and the debate as a whole offered nothing new adding president trump will dominate any of them. now, another moment that got a lot of people talking was when joe biden said people at home should leave the record player on so kids could hear more words apparently part of his pitch to address racial inequality in the education system. janai, will. >> certainly had people talking on twitter. serena marshall in houston. thank you for joining us. we asked our team who won the debate and will it change the race. >> we begin with our congressional correspondent mary bruce. >> i do think joe biden had a good night in that he came out more forcefully than he had in the believe -- previous debates.

the second debate, did not harm but i don't know if he did himself too many favors and today he sort of -- he was more aggressive. >> i don't think it changed the race. that's good for biden and warren and good for bernie sanders because i don't -- i think they remain the top three but if i were to pick a winner, i'm going to go outa limb and say mayor pete. mayor pete had a really solid debate. >> in general i don't think it's going to move the needle that much. >> any losers? >> julian castro. he came to play, no question about it. very talented politician but he took a shot at biden going there on his age and he was wrong. it was he who forgot, not biden. >> now it's back to the campaign trail. the next debate is in october, the 15th in ohio, and we have more analysis of last night and more fact checking of the candidates on abcnews.com. and in other news a spy mystery at the white house. israel's prime minister is denying a report that says israel planted cell phone surveillance devices near the white house and other sensitive locations in washington.

according to the website politico, the so-called stingray devices were planted in the last two years. it's unclear if any information was collected. israel's prime minister calls the report, quote, a blatant lie. and president trump issuing reports he going to ask mike pompeo to pull double duty as secretary of state and national security adviser. the president says pompeo will not be asked to replace john bolton. his third national security advisers who was ousted this week. the president says more than a dozen people are interested in the job. >> a lot of people want the job and we -- it's a great job. it's great because it's a lot of fun to work with donald trump and it's very easy actually to work with me. you know why it's easy? because i make all the decisions. >> the president says he's focusing on five candidates to replace bolton and he plans to announce his pick next week. now to another big story we're watching, the bahamas on alert again because of another storm threat. a tropical warning -- a tropical storm warning is posted for part

of the country that was devastated by hurricane dorian. the u.s. sending an additional $4 million in aid to the bahamas. that brings the total amount of american assistance to $10 million. the number of people listed as missing after dorian has now been lowered to about 1300. and with that storm brewing in the caribbean, let's take a closer look at the forecast for this friday morning. and a good morning to you. we are keeping an eye on the radar here and the future forecast with the potential of tropical development here. could it become humberto? along the southeast coast of florida by saturday morning or do we have the system going into the gulf of mexico? that is the concern as we roll forward. yes, the southeast coast heron alert as we roll forward. for the accuweather network i'm meteorologist chris nallan.

we're back with this suspected car thief who got trapped during that golf cart getaway in palm city, florida. detectives stay he stole the cart from a couple of golfers on the course while he was trying to escape from police. it didn't work. he's now charged with a string of car thefts. investigators say the crew members on that dive boat that

caught fire off the coast of california were sleeping when the fire broke out despite regulations requiring a watchman to be on duty. the boat company says a crew member checked the area about a half hour before the fire started on labor day. 34 people were killed. officials are looking into whether electronics caused the fire. the coast guard has issued a warning about charging lithium ion batteries on boats. new details about a terrifying hot air balloon crash in the nevada desert. four passengers thrown from the balloon when it skidded along the ground for about half a mile while trying to land. the pilot was also ejected. when it was over, seven people were injured. one woman in serious condition. the faa investigating the cause of the crash. frightening moments on a busy highway near washington, d.c. when a small plane came crashing into a car. an instrument problem during takeoff forced the pilot to abort the flight, but the plane ran off the end of the runway and the wing slammed into the roof of that car.

confinement but prosecutors want jail time. this morning judgment day for felicity huffman. the actress will be sentenced in boston after admitting to paying $15,000 to have an s.a.t. proctor alter her daughter's scores. prosecutors are pushing for one month in jail telling the judge huffman's conduct was deliberate and manifestly criminal. neither probation nor home confinement in a large home in the hollywood hills with an infinity pool would constitute meaningful punishment or deter others from committing similar crimes but huffman is asking for probation and community service along with a $20,000 fine. in a letter to the judge she claimed her decision to pay the money was out of desperation to be a good mother, believing that all i was doing was giving my daughter a fair shot. >> based on her own upbringing where she felt like she didn't necessarily have a lot of support and was kind of on her own she wanted to go the extra mile to make sure they had

every advantage. >> reporter: huffman is also getting support from many friends and family would have written letters to the judge on her behalf. >> 27 friends and family members wrote impassioned letters to the judge vouching for felicity's character and talking about her as a friend, as a mother, as a wife, and just about what a good person she really is. >> reporter: huffman and her husband are among 30 other parents including "full house" w acsed of paying large sums of prestigious colleges. while huffman pleaded guilty, loughlin and her husband pleaded not guilty and are now preparing for trial. as for huffman she tells the judge, i have a deep and abiding shame over what i've done, shame and regret that i will carry for the rest of my life. in making their case for jail time, prosecutors said huffman's efforts were, quote, not driven by need or desperation but by a sense of entitlement. the judge's dig on huffman's sentence is expected this afternoon. singer r. kelly is facing new legal troubles.

an arrest warrant has been issued after he failed to show up to a minnesota courtroom to face sex crime charges. he's currently being held at a facility in chicago on federal sex crime charges. kelly's attorney denies he was a no show claiming kelly was never told about the court date. a decades old mystery in florida has been solved by google earth. a man was looking at satellite images of his development near west palm beach when he spotted a car in a pond, so he called police. they found the remains of a man who's been missing for 22 years. william moldt seemingly vanished in november of 1997 when that development was under construction. authorities aren't sure how the car ended up in that pond. and a daring rescue in charlotte, north carolina. bystanders braved an out-of-control fire to pull a person to safety from that home that was engulfed in flames. the person was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. the cause of that fire still under investigation. in sports new england patriots receiver antonio brown has spoken out for the first
