they could get that morning commute flowing. they were hoping to get this done by 6:00 knowing that that commute was coming and they managed to get it done. i want to tell you where we are. it was northbound 85 where the accident happened right above central is expressway. so they were taking people off of the evelyn exit and that's where people were being diverted. what happened was so tragic. one car was headed northbound on 85 when a car started coming down in the wrong direction on northbound but headed southbound. so it was a head-on collision between an suv and honda and both drivers were killed. it was also a fire are crash. they had to get the fire department out here to put that fire out. they've been out here for hours. this happened around 1:00 this morning. five hours later, they managed to get everything cleared and the freeway cleared and reopened so everyone could get to work on this friday morning. reporting live in mountain view, amy holly field, abc7 news.

investigators trying to determine what led to two people getting hit and killed on the tracks by a union pacific train. as of now, the cause of the crash isn't known. this happened after 8:00 last night. it caused delays for amtrak, but the trains this morning are not affected. the coroner has not released any information on the identity of the victims and none of the 22 passengers and crew were injured. b.a.r.t. believes some of the trains could become a death trap during a fire or other emergency. b.a.r.t. has two kinds of these train cars. the e cars have doors on both ends that allow passengers to move between cars pretty easily. then they have the d cars which have more difficult doors on the end. the examiner' reporting that some train operators believe that could be really dangerous during a fire or other emergency, but b.a.r.t. says the current setup is safe. happening today, sad face emojis will have to replace the

usual media photos on san francisco's world-famous cable cars. jobina fortson live in san francisco with how long this is going to last. jobina? >> reporter: good morning. so this is the photo so many tourists like to take as soon is that get here, because what else says i'm on vacation in san francisco outside of the cable cars outside of the eld goen gate bridge and the painted lady. sadly, though, these tourists will not have the opportunity to do that not only today but for the next ten days because all of these cable cars have been taken off the line for mablt nens work. smta has some buses available, but it's not quite the same. the shuttle buses will be running on all of the lines, and they will not be stopping at the terminals, rather at a bus stop nearby. the gear boxes which propel cable cars up hills are being repaired right now.

and the phones will be available in your hand starting next friday. but if you didn't act when they went on sale at 5:00, it's going to be a while before you get your phone. >> we're taking a live look at the new york stock exchange. you can see we're up a little bit, 61 points. governor gavin newsom who's expected to sign the bill calls it the strongest rent control bill in america. so what does the law say and what does it really mean? liz breaks it down. now, before you tune me out because it sounds kind of wonky, listen up because this is a pretty big deal. it makes rent control law of the land in california. there's only one other state in the country to do this, and that's oregon. under this new law for the next decade landlords will only be able to raise rent for an existing ten nanlt by 5% after

inflation. no more. meaning a landlord can't raise your rent some crazy amount no one can afford. on top of that, it will be harder for a landlord to kick you out. they'll have to have a legitimate reason, i.e., the tenant isn't paying rent. there are a few exemptions. mostly you're probably wondering right now, all right, how is this going to impact me. in parts of the bay area, it really might not be that much. san francisco and oakland, for instance, already have their own pretty strict rent control laws and this new law doesn't override that. still it's one more protection for tenants, and those for it say it will be help and those against it say it could make it harder to build more housing. governor newsom is expected to sign it, which means come january 1st. rent control will likely become law.
