news to build a better bay area this is "abc 7 mornings." >> sunday, september 15th. i'm liz in for kusami aaron. let's start with a quick look at the weather and the break we're getting from the heat. here's meteorologist francis ka. good morning. >> good morning. you can tell that we're going to start to see some changes with live doppler 7 and the satellite image, more cloud cover and stronger onshore flow and we're waking up to more clouds this morning. the sea breeze is going to bring in some cooler weather. in fact, visibility less than a mile right now in santa rosa. half moon bay also down to three miles. here's a live shot of the airport with your day planner for today. sunrise 6:15, temperatures in the 50s and 60s. the coast will keep things in the 70s by lunch time but we

will see more sunshine, much cooler inland, only the mid 80s today. mid 70s around the bay and mid 60s at the coast. >> thanks. stay on top of the rising temperatures any time with the abc 7 news app, free to download. enable push alerts. developing news, berkeley police are investigating a of street and beby near thentse avenue. when officers arrived they found the victim on street and police are looking for the suspect but have not release the details. the victim has not been i identified. a freeway shooting in vallejo, all lanes are back open this morning. abc 7 news was at the scene near magazine street and here's what we know. around 8:30 last night. the chp says a person in a car heading east was hit by at least one bullet. that person's condition is not known. the lane closure jammed up

traffic all the way across the bridge about four hours later all lanes reopened. the chp has not said what led to the shooting. a tragic story in the north bay. a man has been arrested for murder after a child was found dead inside a santa rosa home. police say a woman went to check on people at a home yesterday. when she went inside she discovered a man and baby both unresponsive. she then called police. officers say the man was unconscious in a room lying next to a 13-year-old boy who had died. the man was taken to a hospital and has been arrested. police say there were no signs of physical violence at the scene but there were signs of drug use near the child. investigators believe the man's actions caused the death of the young boy, however the exact cause of death has not been determined. a father who was shot and killed while helping a friend break up a fight outside an oakland bar has been identified. his friends and family believe he was at the wrong place at the wrong reporter alicia ga

lee shan has the story. >> my dad heard help was needed outside and he went outside and being the helpful person he was, it just ended up backfiring. >> reporter: mario perez was larger than life, a loyal person who was shot and killed around 1:00 a.m. saturday as he tried to help the owner of the laurel lounge break up a fight outside. >> mario was laying right there in the middle of 38th. >> reporter: perez, his brother and sister-in-law were shot by a man apparently starting a fight with the bar's bartender. >> out of all of them i thought he would make it. he was talking, the lady wasn't saying anything. she was just laying there. another guy got shot, but i think his was minor. >> reporter: perez and his family were popular regulars at the bar, known by many as a fun loving, happy, family man. >> heart breaking to know that he's not here with us because he was my dear friend. like family to us.

>> he was a beautiful person. if you knew the perezs, they were beautiful. >> reporter: right now, sadness washes over the perez family at their san leandro home they gathered to remember the man who brought so much about their lives. >> what i miss about my dad getting to do the simple things with him, talk to him, sit down in that truck, learn story, talk story, listen to music with him. >> reporter: the man who alledgedly shot the group was arrested and police have not identified him. abc 7 news. now to a bizarre story we've been following this weekend. a protester arrested after throwing what appears to be blood and feminine hygiene product at senators at the pito. a local senator is telling us how it all happened. abc 7 newss lawmakers were finalizing their work in the chamber to adjourn for the year

this happened. >> the object came over my head, landed in front and a rain of fluid came down on top of me and my colleagues. >> reporter: according to senator steve represents the area of orinda and other parts of the east bay a protester threw a red liquid from the visitor's gallery and it hit at least 8 senator cathleen galgiani said the protesters yelled. >> reporter: the protester 43-year-old rebecca dalelio a resident of boulder creek near santa cruz. she was arrested on six charges including assault and vandalism. >> i had a drop on my head and on my clothes and, of course, on my desk. >> reporter: chp evacuated the chamber and taped off the crime scene. senators were asked to take showers and undergo medical evaluations. >> it's believed that the person who engaged in this conduct was a part of that group that we call them anti-vacciners. >> reporter: they protested against two controversial

vaccine bills governor gavin newsom signed on monday by packing the hallways and disrupting hearings. the founder of freedom angels outside the capitol denounced the act. >> we never called for that behavior. we're peaceful mothers and fathers. >> what's your message to the protester? >> simply that that horrible contact achieved nothing. he was morally repugnant, it was politically stupid, and pragmatically you didn't affect the work of the senate. we got back to business. >> reporter: in orinda, luz pena, abc 7 news. a fire did significant damage to a home and the smoke was visible from interstate 880. yesterday abc 7 news was in hayward and caught the aftermath on royal avenue near a street. the fire started at around noon and you can see the burned out garage as well as a car that went up in flames. there's no word on what caused this fire. the sea lion appears to have breached itself on a san

francisco beach. a large crowd gathered yesterday afternoon at aquatic park to look at it. the area has been taped off warning people to stay away from the animalo worwhxaat'sroith h n th sn there. we've reported several times this year on sea lines and seals becoming ill or malnourished. taking a live look right now at san francisco international airport where it seems those delays and cancellations may be easing as the main runway is under construction. 28 l has been closed for a week to allow crews to repair cracks in the pavement. airport officials say the second phase of the project began yesterday. they say there were 180 delays and nine cancellations yesterday. good news, that's down from 401 delays and 40 cancellations on friday. the runway should reopen in just under two weeks. san francisco firefighters how tough working in the fire service is. a handful of elected officials and reporters put on the gear

and were trained like trainees. here's abc 7 news anchor eric thomas. >> reporter: to work like a firefighter, you have to dress like one. in the protective outer wear they call turnout. first the p tn the jacket and, of course, the boots and top it off with a surprisingly heavy helmet. after a few adjustments, of course. >> oh. >> reporter: then outside to practice a scenario. >> this is a lot of stuff to wear to do this job. >> we're about to do a search and rescue evolution. >> reporter: this rock pile simulates a collapsed building with people possibly trapped underneath. my job is to send rescue job vitae to look for victims. >> ready to find someone. search. it takes less than a minute of searching to locate a firefighter pretending to be trapped. >> is there somebody in there. >> reporter: it takes me about the same amount of time to find out how miserably hot and uncomfortable this gear is.>> md ros, some of which are loose, and moving under your feet, in this outfit, it's tough. >> reporter: this event is put

on by the international association of firefighters union local 798. what may be fun and gamesimant francisco's elected officials about the equipment firefighters need to do their jobs. >> when we ask for certain things that are just coming from our experiences that you guys have no idea about whatsoever. >> reporter: the union is also worried about losing the department's extensive training facility on treasure island. it allows them to train for structure fires as well as water rescues on the bay. but they're supposed to move out by 2024 to make room for new development. supervisor aaron peskin says the department will have a top training center. it may not be here. >> whether it is at treasure island or on other pieces of city land whether it's at the airport, we have excess land at the san francisco zoo, we'll make sure our firefighters have a state-of-the-art training facility. >> eric thomas, abc 7 news. let's talk about the

welcome back. new developments, secretary of state mike pompeo is blaming iran for a massive attack on a saudi arabia oil facility.

now, iran's foreign ministry spokesman is denying pompeo's accusations. yemeni rebels claimed responsibility for the attack but a senior official tells abc news more than 20 drones were used in the attack and iran was, quote, definitely behind it. so why does this matter? well saudi arabia says this has affected 5.7 million barrels a day of crude and gas production. the country is the largest oil exporter and this could have a ripple affect around the globe. dozens of military men and women in the reserves all preparing for the worst. they created a training scenario that looks real. the valuable training could be used in real life disasters. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the story. a quick warning, this was only a drill. >> i can't feel my face. >> reporter: this drill looked like the real thing. a combat scenario involving mass

casualties. >> we need a gurney. >> got shot. >> where did you get shot? >> i don't know. >> reporter: medics from the army and navy reserve working together. >> we prefer to train and train and get it right and learn and then be ready should we ever get called on. >> all right. i'm inside this mock military hospital. this place is huge. again, this is not real. but it certainly looks like it is. >> one, two, three, down. >> people are used to working in a trauma bay in the hospital, but it's different in the field and you treat casualties differently. you don't have as much access to supplies. >> reporter: field hospitals like these could be used in times of disaster like earthquakes or hurricanes. >> planning to work together as a team that could be applied in any scenario. >> reporter: most of the reservists across california will go back to their civilian jobs, ready to train and serve. in dublin, cornell bernard.

high school and middle school students across the state may get a later start to the school day. i know this is a big topic for a lot of parents. state lawmakers on friday approved a bill that would prohibit middle schools from starting before 8:00 a.m. and high schools couldn't start before 8:30 a.m. supporters of this say the measure is needed to help deal with the epidemic of childhood sleep deprivation. opponents say it can negatively affect before and after school programs. if the governor signs the bill the law would go into effect in 2022. this morning, vallejo has a new police chief. shawny williasm who is currently a deputy chief in san jose has been named to the position. he just needs to pass a background check. williams will take over for andrew bedo who announced his retirement in june. the vallejo police department has had a rough year with a deadly shooting at a taco bell drive-through and a violent arrest of a marine veteran caught on video. stanford revealed it

received a $50,000 from the late billionaire and accused sex trafficker jeffrey epstein's foundation, couq. the gift was made in 2004 two years before minors for prostitution and pleaded guilty in 2008. epstein was arrested for sex trafficking this past july as many of you remember and died by suicide last month while awaiting trial. stanford says the donation is the only one it received from the foundation. bart trains are down to one track between the orinda and walnut creek stations. bart crews are performing upgrades on the track this weekend. the work has also closed two eastbound lanes of highway 24 near oak hill road in lafayette. expect up to 30-minute delays and plan ahead. track pieces that are nearly 50 years old are being replaced. more delays and possible closures are expected through october. and all right, meteorologist francis lawson tracking the forecast for us. >> good morning, everyone.

we're seeing much more cloud cover, this onshore flow will make temperatures cooler for inland areas today. you'll notice the change. here's a look at live doppler 7 and the satellite image the clouds filling in across the bay at this point. live shot from the exploratoryium looking at the downtown san francisco area gray skies right now, temperatures in the 50s and 60s. san francisco is 58, oakland 62. san jose 59, half moon bay 57. feels much cooler this morning and here's another live shot as we check out from the view from emeryville towards the bay bridge. the gray skies out there. more 50s in parts of the north bay. santa rosa visibility has dropped to a fourth of a mile with the fog. napa 54, fairfield 59, concord 61. the live shot, the golden gate bridge, low clouds overhead but no fog across the span here into san francisco. so we have a breezy coast today

and that's going to drive temperatures down much cooler inland. we'll see increasing clouds overnight from a system heading our way. it's going to head north of us, but it will bring us a chance of showers for tomorrow. the monday morning commute could be a little messy. i'll show you what's going on with the accuweather outlook. a system to our north the cold front will sweep through the bay area and that will bring us increasing clouds overnight and rain tomorrow. here's the forecast animation starting at 7:00 this morning. we'll see some clouds out there, notice mostly sunny conditions in the afternoon. overnight the clouds fill in. tomorrow morning for the monday morning commute, we could see some spotty showers in parts of the north bay and then the system willwe through n hopefully most people will be in their offices and not cause too much traffic at that point and by the evening it should clear out, even see

some of the areas of pink, light snow in the sierra. shower potential, less than a quarter of an inch for the most part and some areas may just get a spotty shower or so, even only 0.03 and maybe almost 0.1 in san jose. highs today notice we're close to normal, even a little cooler. breezy at the beaches, san francisco 67, oakland 72, san jose 79 and inland areas will be in the mid 80s versus the triple digits a couple days ago. we will see high clouds passing through and increasing overnight into tomorrow and that's when we get the showers starting to head our way tomorrow morning with those increasing clouds. here's the accuweather forecast, cooling continues, inland areas around the bay mid 70s, coast mid 60s, tracking the chance of showers to see how much exactly we get.

interesting. >> it's always worth ♪ >> they really got that good swirl down. all right. in the east bay, moving on from ice cream, families gathered to celebrate an organization helping them put their kids through college. yesterday abc 7 was in oakland where brilliant babies celebrated its annual family day at children's fairy land. brilliant babies is a childhood program under the oakland promise initiative. it gives families $500 for a college savings account they can grow over time. the program also helps families keep up with school work until graduation. >> we want the children of oakland to have all of the resources and support that they need to grow up and be thriving adults in oakland, and be able to live in the community they grew up in or wherever they choose to be. >> more than 500 families are part of the brilliant babies

promise. and san francisco's newest painted lady was unveiled in the city. a celebration was held in alamo square park yesterday afternoon. you can see here the mural is on steiner street between grove and fulton adjacent to post hard row. the tapestry features san francisco drag queen juanita moore also at yesterday's event. the eight painted lady was designed and created by local artist jay manuel carmona. donations help support a new home for the glbt historical society. and great weather this weekend to celebrate cultures. starting with the 62nd annual saint gregory's armenian food festival in san francisco. 5,000 people over three days get to enjoy live music, dancing, art and authentic homemade food. i think i spotted dion lim there enjoying herself. if you missed it yesterday the community party continues today from noon to 5:00. and meantime at the presidio

korean dance culture and food was on display at t first ever mid autumn festival. it's one of the most important holidays in korea where families and friends gather and recognize their ancestors. yestimhe korea festival has come to the u.s. participants learned how to not only make their own fermented vegetables but got to taste their creations as well. i'm not sure how well i would do at that but sounds fun to try. still to come, democrats back on the campaign trail following thursday's debate. which candidate has added to the bay area has added the bay area to his schedule this week. also how klay thompson is vowing to help the bahamas impacted by hurricane dorian and why trump isn't doing enough.

here's meteorologist francis lawson in for lisa argen. >> good morning. we're waking up to cooler temperatures this morning and you can see here with live doppler 7 and the satellite image more cloud cover as well. fog in santa rosa that has reduced visibility down to a fourth of a mile. here's your day planner, sunrise as 6:51. with that breezy coast and onshore flow temperatures will only be in the 70s for lunch time for inland and around the bay. much cooler inland this afternoon. topping off in the mid 80s. around the bay mid 70s. at the coast mid 60s. now the sun sets at 7:17. we'll see increasing clouds overnight and the chance of showers tomorrow. >> thanks. developing news, nearly two dozen people hurt after a deck collapsed in new jersey. at least three of the injured are children. it happened at a three-story home in the tnwildwood, best known for the jersey shore.

george solis has the details. >> reporter: the horror unfolding early saturday evening in wildwood. a deck collapsing at a home in the 200 block of east baker avenue. a slew of firefighters descending on the scene. firefighters convention coincidentally taking place in town. fagments of the deck covering the front yard. >> i ran and grabbed my phone, called 911 and i could hear the people over there calling for help. >> reporter: june lives across the street. she made the call to 911. >> after they got here, happened to see one of the gentleman like his shoulder, his head and arm sticking out, like face down. >> i'm sure must have been horrific. >> it was scary. i saw them put them on the board and medevac'd him out. >> reporter: like others here couldn't believe what they were seeing. >> i looked and i saw people screaming and everything. it wasrr reporter: there are 22 injured being treated at nearby hospitals. fire officials so far remaining silent many hoping the injuries

san francisco in april where people packed the irish cultural center for a town hall meeting. he is planning to visit san quentin prison on wednesday and meet with inmates and take part in a podcast and stop in oakland on thursday. o'rourke was supposed to visit california in august but canceled due to the mass shooting in his hometown of el paso. coming up on "this week," presidential candidates mayor piece buttigieg and senator klobuchar. watch the full interviews with george at 8:00 here on abc 7. and in our efforts to build a better bay area abc 7 news is looking for solutions for problems some of us face every day. a neighborhood in san francisco is dealing with a dilemma. there hasn't been any mail delivery for almost a month. abc 7 news anchor dion lim went to usps for answers and also got residents an apology. >> reporter: never in otilia

mirambeaux's life has she been so excited to see a mail carrier. >> i was overjoyed. it's here, parked, must be delivering mail. >> reporter: amazing because otilia said she and her neighbors have suffered from spot mail service for years and in recent weeks it reached a fervor pitch. >> we had a crisis recently where my neighborhoods and i didn't receive mail for three weeks. >> reporter: dozens of her neighborhoods shared the same outrage in fears the postal service was underserving their community. >> i am so down for as protest. this is unacceptable. >> reporter: they banded together. >> countless visits to the post office to the mailbox wondering what's going on. >> reporter: after neighborhoods' requests fell on deaf ears when abc 7 news got involved this is started showing up and the post master's response. >> the post master called me yesterday and assured me he would look into it. >> reporter: along with the mail neighborhoods were delivered some transparency. >> the challenge really is because of the high cost of living in that area especially

. jef klay thompson says he will donate all proceeds from his foundation's upcoming celebrity golf tournament to hurricane dorian relief efforts in the bahamas. he made the announcement in an instagram post where he slammed the trump administration for not granting temporary protected status to displaced people from the bahamas. thomas' father was born in nassau. dorian is blamed for 50 deaths in the bahamas and 1300 remain missing. the second annual foundation golf tournament tees off on friday in newport beach at the
