house. president trump today naming his fourth national security adviser replacing john bolton who got forced out last week. the new guy, robert o'brien is his name. he's the state department's hostage envoy, he's been working with countries around the world and families in the united states. he's close to secretary of state mike pompeo, something that john boltwasn't and clearly has the confidence of the president. he's taking on a difficult role with problems in iran and arnold the world. but the new national security adviser, robert o'brien. president trump's fourth. george. >> breaking news overseas. secretary of state mike pompeo on his way to saudi arabia this morning to meet with the crown prince as tensions rise with iran in the wake of that attack on key saudi oil facilities. iran's leaders warning against any retaliation as chances of a meeting with president trump are dwindling. our chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz tracking all the latest from washington. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. the state department this

morning is urging u.s. citizens traveling in saudi to be more vigilant. this, as iran's president is calling the attack on the oil facilities a warning to the saudis from yemen to end the war there or face a wider conflict and a u.s. forensic team in saudi is examining a nearly intact cruise missile that missed its target and combing through debris at the oil facilities. this image from saudi social media appears to be missile wreckage. an image that analysts are examining from one of nearly a dozen cruise missiles that targeted saudi oil facilities. a u.s. official says the investigators have found compelling forensic evidence from those missiles and some 20 drones that hit the facilities. >> once they get the debris of these drones that crashed in the desert they will be able to very precisely match things like the wings and the tail to pictures that the iranians themselves have published of their drones. >> reporter: u.s. officials believe the missiles and

explosive-laden drones were launched from southwestern iran in a complex and precise attack which struck at least 17 targets. since president trump pulled out of the nuclear deal last year, there have been more attacks than ever blamed on iran, major attacks on oil tankers in the gulf and that highly sophisticated u.s. drone that was shot down. trump was considering military action in retaliation last summer but backed off. but this attack is by far the most brazen and seemingly calculated. so why would iran risk it? >> the iranians have gotten progressively more aggressive and they have seized ships. they have shot down a u.s. drone and now a saudi attack, and they think they can get away with it. the u.s. is more bark than bite but they want to pressure the u.s. to come back to the negotiating table and give them relief from sanctions. >> reporter: facing pressure from even some of his political allies, president trump insisting that his restraint in dealing with past iranian aggression is a sign of strength, that some people just don't understand.

this morning, president trump tweeting that he's instructed the secretary of the treasury to substantially increase sanctions on the country of iran, using one of the many options available to him. what is clear is that if iran is proven to be behind the attack, the pressure on president trump to do something will only increase. >> martha raddatz, thanks very much. robin? george, also in that region an election the world is closely watching is in israel. they're on edge this morning as results come in showing prime minister benjamin netanyahu and his opponent deadlocked at this hour. the future uncertain. our senior foreign correspondent ian pannell is tracking the very latest for us on all that. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, robin. what we're looking at is a potential earthquake in israeli politics. benjamin netanyahu is israel's longest serving prime minister and the dominant political figure of his generation.

but this morning, one of president trump's closest allies is now facing the gravest political danger of his career. netanyahu campaigned on his experience in office and ability to keep israel strong and secure and his close relationship with world leaders, in particular, president trump. but he's facing a possible corruption indictment and heavy criticism over divisive policies and his campaign looks to have fallen short so the other party led by benny gantz, a former army chief, neck and neck with the likud party, but israeli politics are notoriously complex and unpredictable. gantz could go in coalition with likud. that would likely mean netanyahu having to step aside, and of course, there's no indication he's ready to do that. and if a deal fails and israel is dreading this possibility, there could be yet another election the third this year. michael. >> all right, ian, thank you so much. and now to a fiery showdown

on capitol hill. president trump's former campaign manager corey lewandowski grilled about possible obstruction of justice by the president. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the details. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: michael, good morning. it was fireworks as for the first time a top trump campaign official was grilled at a public hearing about the russia investigation and possible obstruction of justice. democrats desperately trying to pursue impeachment proceedings and republicans fiercely trying to protect the president. throughout the roughly six-hour hearing, corey lewandowski could barely contain his apparent contempt for house democrats. >> i think they hate this president more than they love their country. >> reporter: but democrats continued to press about a key scene in the mueller report. president trump calling lewandowski into the oval office and dictating a message for delivery to jeff sessions, the goal -- to get the then-attorney general to limit the special counsel's investigation. >> didn't you think it was a little strange that the president would sit down with you one-on-one and ask you to do

something that you knew was against the law? >> i didn't think the president asked me to do anything illegal. >> reporter: democrats furious that he refused to answer certain questions about his dealings with the president. referring to this letter from the white house restricting the scope of his testimony citing executive privilege. >> confidentiality. >> you're not going to stonewall me and my questioning. >> reporter: lewandowski's credibility put into question. >> i don't ever remember the president ever asking me to get involved with jeff sessions or the department of justice in any way, shape or form. ever. >> that was not true, was it? >> i have no obligation to be honest with the media because they're just as dishonest as anybody else. >> reporter: it was a day of hardball politics. lewandowski even took the time during the break to tweet about the pact encouraging him to run for the u.s. senate, george. >> okay, pierre, thanks very much. we're going to go to the white house where president trump is preparing to take on california's clean air rules setting up a major confrontation over climate change. likely to go all the way to the supreme court. our chief white house correspondent jon karl joins us

now. this would be an unprecedented move. no administration has ever tried to take away a state's authority to regulate its own air quality. >> reporter: it would be unprecedented, george. in fact, the state of california has been regulating emissions setting a stricter standard since the 1960s. now the trump administration is poised to take that away requiring california to go along with the more lenient standards dictated by the trump epa. it's a move that would appear inconsistent with the trump administration's embrace of the power of states to do all sorts of other regulations from abortion to guns, but the administration says that they are doing this because california with its huge car market was effectively imposing their standard on the rest of the country. but, george, the administration is certainly going to face court challenges. >> there's no question about it. it's one of a series of actions the administration has taken to weaken climate change regulations and to take on the state of california on a number of fronts. they're clearly going to take this to court. >> reporter: absolutely. if you look at the attorney general of the state of california, by the way, he's

already said that he will go to court on this. he has challenged the administration in court on a whole range of issues ranging from education to immigration and down the line. this one is almost certain to go to the supreme court. >> jon karl, thanks very much. robin. >> all right, george. now to that fast-forming tropical storm making landfall in texas slamming the gulf with relentless rain overnight. now the southeast is bracing for flash flooding and, ginger, i know you have the latest. >> yes. we are seeing rainfall totals right now above a foot along the coast. so this is a big deal for texas and louisiana. i want to take you to the pictures of the gulf of mexico usually so serene not now. you know something is brewing. it is the slow-moving what's left of imelda. bay city, in a flash flood warning. that means it's happening now, they just extended these up to lufkin and lake charles. these are flash flood watches meaning you could have three plus inches per hour fall. can you imagine getting three, and you've got ten already.

we anticipate anyone from houston to beaumont could get this through the next 24, 48 hours, even lake charles and lufkin need to be on the lookout, michael. >> thanks for that, ginger. now to a big arrest overnight. a major democratic donor ed buck is in custody charged with operating a drug house and linked to the death of two men at his home. our chief national correspondent matt gutman is in the west -- is in west hollywood with the latest. good morning to you, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. in the space of a just few months ed buck went from being democratic party darling to accused predator with the lada saying he lured men struggling with homelessness and addiction to this apartment with the promise of drugs, money and shelter, but for two of those men, it ended in death and the lada says that for others, near fatal overdoses. ov overnight, prominent democratic doe nar -- arrested after

a third man was allegedly overdosed at his west hollywood home. buck seen here being led out of his hollywood apartment and placed in the back of a police suv trying to duck photographers. but he's been highly visible as a democratic donor. giving more than $100,000 to the party over the years and hosting fund-raisers for hillary clinton, former governor jerry brown and congressman ted lieu. this morning, buck is charged with battery, operating a drug house and providing drugs to a 37-year-old man who survived an overdose after investigators injected him with the drug. but according to prosecutors, two other men weren't so lucky. >> we're going to be out here every night. >> reporter: earlier anger and protest after police say they found the body of 55-year-old timothy dean inside buck's home, the same location where officials say 26-year-old gemmel moore died of a drug overdose back in july of 2017. buck was not charged in either man's death and he denied any wrongdoing in both incidents. >> i don't care if he was in his

yes, this summer he got some positive news and he was excited to share that and you know what, just a couple of weeks ago he got some not-so-good news. that happens. the difference is he has chosen to share that as well with us. >> reporter: exuding hopefulness and positivity since first revealing his cancer diagnosis in march, alex trebek now says he may have been too hopeful about his early prognosis. >> one of the things i've learned in the past six months is that the course of pancreatic cancer treatment is not a straightforward affair. there are always curves and unexpected events. this past summer because i was making such good progress we thought i was finished with chemo. that was a bit premature and certainly overoptimistic. >> reporter: soon after revealing to us first on "gma" yesterday that he'd experienced a setback in his cancer treatment, the longtime "jeopardy" host released a new video message to his fans. >>he doctors are now re-examining my situation, and it appears i will be having more

chemo treatments ahead of me. hey, they worked very well the first time, so we're expecting good results again. >> reporter: trebek says doctors at one point described his cancer as near remission and he announced just last month that he was fished with chemotherapy treatment. >> i was doing so well and my numbers went down to the equivalent of a normal human being who does not have pancreatic cancer. so we were all optimistic, and they said, good. we're going to stop chemo, and we'll start you on immunotherapy. that unfortunately didn't work out well. i lost about 12 pounds in a week and my numbers went sky high. much higher than they were when i was first diagnosed. so the doctors have decided that i have to undergo chemo again and that's what i'm doing. >> reporter: he is starting a new round of chemo just as he's kicking off a new season of "jeopardy." we caught up with him as he

prepared to tape this season's tournament of champions which includes jeopardy james holzhauer who recalls finding out about his diagnosis just minutes before airing. >> oh, gosh. it was just such a gut punch to everybody in the room. it was hard to get psyched up to play some "jeopardy" ten minutes later after we hear this. you know, it's great to see him out here again. he's such a consummate professional. it's like nothing's ever changed. >> announcer: here is the host of "jeopardy," alex trebek! >> reporter: now in his 36th season as "jeopardy" host, he contends nothing will be different. how do you go into this season any differently than previous seasons? how does season 36 for you now feel? >> it's the season that comes before 37. >> and that's it? >> that's it. it's another day at the office, but what a wonderful office to go to and do your work. as long as i can walk out and lking out is more of an effort now than it used to be but as long as i can walk out and greet

it was such a hard thing to face. >> reporter: the couple's two young children, 9 years old and 6 years old at the time, were home at the time of the shootings. >> the children, a 9-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl have been taken into protective custody. >> reporter: they would be raised by brynn's sister after their parents' deaths. now more than 20 years later, greg omdahl says they are thriving. >> birgen is doing great. >> birgen. >> she's married now and her and her husband have started a business that's doing real well. >> hey, birgie, what do you want to say to yourself ten years from now? >> she's a beautiful gal and has a handsome husband and she's living a normal happy life. sean is doing well. he got a degree in art and he's pursuing his dream of being an artist and musician. >> hi. >> i believe brynn and phil would be very proud of how sean and birgen have grown up. and the people they have turned into.

mosquito-borne illness. eastern equine encephalitis, otherwise known as eee, it is spreading across southwest michigan and there have been at least 17 cases that we've seen so far in four states total. but in michigan at least two of the cases have been fatal. health officials there are now urging residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites as they've seen seven confirmed cases just since july. now, while eee is rare according to the cdc, nearly a third of the cases are fatal with many survivors experiencing permanent neurological damage. authorities now asking residents to just cancel or postpone outdoor events during the evening, especially activities that involve children and there are a lot of outdoor activities involving children right now, but the worst outbreak in that region in over a decade. >> you got to heed that warning. >> yes, you do. >> paula, thank you. coming up, everybody, "gma's" one-on-one with the new bachelor. >> pilot pete. >> yep, going to see what he's looking for as he takes off on

i can only imagine how hard it must have been to relive it as you were doing the movie. >> well, i was hands off for the movie. writing the book my focus was saving my daughter. deciding to make the film actually was a harder decision because my daughter was out of the cult. she wants to move forward with her life, and she doesn't want the stigma of being associated with nxivm, but the decision was these sexual predators and their predatory practices. their playbook is very slim whether it's weinstein or epstein or this man keith raniere so in order to protect other young women i thought this was more important to tell the story. >> i followed it pretty closely. i just confessed to you a minute ago before we went on the air, i don't understand how this works and you actually took a couple of the classes early. >> yeah. >> and? >> well, the way he set it up was he had this supposed leadership self-help program and he funneled people through and it looked legitimate and was offering legitimate kind of tools for, you know -- and my daughter really enjoyed it and i

thought that there was some benefit in the beginning but truthfully it's a bait and switch and it was a recruitment funnel for sexual partners for him, but you didn't know that walking in. it could have been any, you know, landmark or any of these sort of large group trainings. >> and it must have been so hard to see your daughter going through it. as you say she escaped the cult. you rescued her from the cult. how is she doing today? >> today she's doing amazing. amazing. it's been a year since she has been out. there's been a lot of healing, and she's in a very empowered place. i'm really, really proud of her. it was a terrifying ordeal. >> i can only imagine. and as paula said in her piece, raniere's sentencing has been put off at least a year. do you want to be there for that day? >> i do. it's important. it's a privilege to watch the wheels of justice turning and to watch justice being served. this man deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail. he's a danger to society.

[ applause ] we want you to meet two siblings, jack and shelby santos. they are here because world marrow donor day is coming up this weekend. it also marks actually my 7th birthday. the seventh year since i've gone my bone marrow transplant when i was blessed my sister sally-ann was a perfect match. it only happens 30% of the time that a family member -- this is where her stem cells were being collected. you know, jack and shelby, they know the story very well as well because shelby was a perfect match for her brother jack. >> i'm so happy to see you. >> hi, shelby. >> you've got this. >> hi. >> thank you for having us nice to meet you. >> beautiful family. >> thank you. >> it's two rows of santoss right there just so you know. grandma. >> there's grandma. >> and i mean the support as you see for your family just incredible. shelby, for you how does it feel to know that you helped save your brother's life? >> i mean, how do i even put it into words. he's my baby brother. i've always been overprotective. i have another brother hank in the audience. jack has always been my baby brother so always wanted to help him through life and never thought i could do it this way. i'm so beyond grateful i could. >> i'm the baby too. it's great to be the baby in the family. >> what a moment when you found out shelby was a match. >> it's a weird moment and takes a toll on you. it's like you don't really know

what to expect. >> oh, well, we want people to know fully your story and so we talked to you all individually so you could hear what you felt about each other. okay. here it is. last year, jack santos was like any other 18-year-old, playing sports, spending time with his family and planning for college. a routine yearly checkup changed everything. >> i never really, quote/unquote felt sick. i told her i was getting a lot of nosebleeds but i didn't think i felt anything wrong. they checked my blood and tested it. came back numbers didn't look too good. >> jack was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. a life-threatening blood disease. to survive he would need a bone marrow transplant but finding a match can be daunting. >> he's always going to be my little baby brother. i didn't want to see him go through something like this so it was terrifying but we were ready for whatever brought with it at the time. >> jack's big sister shelby got tested and the family's prayers

were answered. she was a perfect match to donate her bone marrow to her brother. >> this just made us this much closer. i'm just honored to have been the one to be able to help him with that. >> how are you feeling? >> pretty good. a little sore but good. >> i don't even want to think about where i would be if i didn't have her as a perfect match. shelby saved my life. >> now one year after the transplant, jack has a special surprise for his big sister. >> ooh. that's what we call a tease. >> yeah, what? >> you are such a blessing, your family. you're engaged. your fiance, garrett, come on up here. come on up here as well. i want to make room for you, as well. [ applause ] jack, i feel you. it's priceless. it is a priceless gift. there's nothing you could ever do or say but you do have a little surprise here for your sister. >> i do. you know i could never really fully repay you, oh, lord.

>> it's okay. >> as you know make a wish, they granted me a wish before i went in for treatment last year and i was racking my brain thinking about what i wanted to do. i couldn't figure it out but then i reached o to them and they are generous enough to allow me to send you guys on the honeymoon of your choice. time you need somebody off the registry. when we do stories like this it increases the registry but people are sometimes fearful of the process. you said you were a little bit sore but other than that how was it. >> honestly it was so easy. so much easier than i thought it was going to be. you know, it's an outpatient surgery so you're back home that night. if everything goes as planned and, you know, we were in great doctors' hands, soreness for a couple of days but other than that, i mean, if i can be sore for a couple of days to save someone's life who is going through a much more than i am i mean it's the least that i can do. >> amen to that. >> i feel fantastic. i feel great. >> oh. >> what you did was great and you two enjoy those pancakes. >> yes. years or something which is unbelievable. because i was so young.
