this morning. investigators say the fire was not set on purpose but they have yet to determine the cause. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm kristen sze. the fire broke out around 2:00 this morning at the home on delano and san juan avenue near the city college campus in balboa park. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live with more and what we've learned about this tragedy. vic? >> reporter: kristen, we're told that the fire was contained mostly to the front portion of the house. the two residents, the father and the daughter, had to be taken by firefighters through the back of the home. we are told that they died from smoke inhalation. >> the young woman arrived at the hospital. she was pronounced dead. and about 30 minutes ago we found out that the father had just passed away as well. >> reporter: that sad news came this afternoon. ricardo ron and his 23-year-old daughter camilla perished in the fire.

ron's wife died several years ago from cancer. an entire family gone. >> i knew the girl when she was like a little toddler and they were really good people. i hate that this happened to them. >> reporter: the fire broke out shortly after 2:00 this morning. father and daughter were still in the house when firefighters got to them. camilla was pronounced dead at the hospital. her father was in critical condition. >> i opened my door and i saw a firefighter pass through. >> the fireman came and banged on our door, get out, get out. >> reporter: this family lives right next door. the fire charred the side of their home. they've known their neighbors for some 20 years. camilla had just started law school. >> she started just three weeks ago. it breaks my heart this happened to her. >> look at this one. the father and her, see. i want to keep this. >> reporter: the neighbor

discovered a jewel in the rubble. a photo album. something she'll treasure forever. >> camilla is beautiful. >> reporter: this neighborhood is an old tight knit community. everyone knows one another. the loss so tragic, the pain so intense. and so sad. this is indeed a very close community. i mean, this is a neighborhood that even shuts down the streets for halloween. there's even a fourth of july parade that runs through here. this has been a terrible loss who lives here. our hearts go out to them. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> as one of the neighbors said, life can change in an instant. chp officers still investigating a frightening and firy situation in the north bay. >> it was a collision that involved two cars just after 8:00 a.m. on northbound 101 near st. vincent's drive near

marinwood. reporter wayne freedman joins us live with the latest. wayne? >> reporter: good evening. this story has changed throughout the day. we haven't had a lot of facts until the last hour, now a better picture of what happened. we still don't noknow the namesf the mother and two children injured in the accident. the little boy was 3 years old. his sister was 6 years old. they're both in the hospital as is their mother. they owe their lives tonight to three good samaritans, three witnesses, who saw this accident, got out of their cars, got into the ravine and pulled these people out after burning vehicle. this was the suv this morning at the bottom of a ravine. when the fire department, a california highway patrol arrived, they found the female driver in very bad shape at the top of the hill 80 feet above. >> she was conscious. she was able to talk to our paramedics on our helicopter a little bit in transit. definitely major. >> reporter: nor was the woman alone in the car.

rescuers found her 3-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter on the shoulder of the road. the boy was unconscious. tonight the chp confirms the three witnesses stopped and pulled everyone from the burning wreckage. >> anytime you have children involved, it brings a different level to the crash, so it's a tough one. >> reporter: witnesses say it all happened around 8:30 this morning when the suv rear-ended a car ahead of it, bounced off the center divide, crossed all lanes and tumbled into the ravine t. remained almost three hours based on worries there might be another person inside or perhaps beneath it. only after confirming that there were three victims and not four did a wrecking crew haul up the suv and take it away. by then the traffic jam extended two miles. >> and we're going to be leading right into our afternoon commute anyway. i would anticipate anybody going northbound 101 should expect delays. >> reporter: okay. so here's the latest news on this. the woman went by helicopter to john muir trauma center.

the 3-year-old boy to oakland children's hospital. the 6-year-old girl to marin general hospital. we have no updates on their conditions and we would love to talk to those people who saved their lives. live in san rafael right on the border, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> wayne, thank you. the suspect in the shooting death of a popular san leandro man appeared in court today. prosecutors have charged 34-year-old peter trevinia four counts with a semiautomatic firearm. he opened fire outside an oakland bar early last saturday during a dispute with another man. four people were hit by gunfire including 46-year-old mario perez sr. he was trying to defuse the situation and died on the way to the hospital. we have a link on our website, abc7news.com. >> we'll talk about the weather.

homelessness and possible solutions. something we've been focusing on as part of our efforts to build a better bay area and in walnut creek they've designated two officers to work on what they call a homeless beat. >> so far they're encouraged by the results and other east bay cities are consulting with them on this person-to-person approach. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley rode along with them on patrol today. leslie? >> reporter: like you said, it's all about communication, getting to know these homeless people by their names, learnheir m about their personal lives. so the officers can get them into the agencies or services that will help them get out of the spiral of homelessness. we rode along on patrol today. >> how is your day going? >> slow. >> yeah? >> anybody giving you money or food? no? >> reporter: what do you think when they come up o? fir i was wriedha they ask.

bottles i'm sure are from ace hardware. >> reporter: mattresses, sofas, discarded clothes. >> in martinez they have a clean clothes program. you pick out the clothes you want but you have to give your dirty clothes in that are soiled and they get thrown out so this doesn't happen. >> the last individual i talked to on north main street, i said, what are you doing here? to make money. how much did you make? $80. how long have you been here? 20 minutes. why did you come to walnut creek? i can make more machime money h. what do you say to that? >> reporter: police say if someone homeless is out in this affluent community holding up a sign saying anything will help, they can make $40 an hour during the holiday season it could be $100 an hour. they've seen people giving out $100 bill. doling out money will not help. much bettory douer to donate to

agencies who help the homeless. we ran into an arrest situation with a homeless man possessing meth just steps away from the shopping center. i'll have that story coming up at 6:00 tonight. in walnut creek, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. an american airlines mechanic accused of sabotaging a jet has been denied bail because of, quote, potential terrorism sympathies. he appeared in court in miami today. new evidence presented by prosecutors include information that he has a brother in iraq who may be involved with isis along with statements he made about wishing harm on non-muslims. he is not charged with a terror related crime. prosecutors claim he disabled the plane's navigation system because he was upset over stalled contract negotiations. the plane did not take off and no one was hurt. police in pennsylvania looked into the sexual assault allegations against new england

patriots receiver antonio brown, but they will not be filing any criminal charges. brown's former trainer brittany taylor filed a lawsuit against brown. a detective reached out after the suit became public. an investigation can't move forward because of an issue with the statute of limitations. brown's allegation is more than two years old stemming from an incident in june of 2017. brown spent a brief period of time with the raiders, has denied the allegations. it's unclear, if anything, what the nfl will do. brown made his debut with the patriots this weekend. new developments, governor newsom has signed a highly controversial piece of legislation to give wage and benefit protection to drivers who work for on-demand ride services and gig economy workers. the governor's office tweet this had photo of newsom signing the bill today. the legislation makes it tougher asdentonacomhey donavebefi insam

3:00 at solano middle school. it means tomorrow their seventh grade math teacher comes back. >> we had a math teacher who had to go out on leave for a couple weeks. >> reporter: but her subtraction added up to a headache when they ran out of substitute teachers. >> there were a few days there was not coverage for the class, and then kids were, in fact, sent to the gym during those days. >> reporter: spes ofcally three days last week administrators at the school decided to give about 150 seventh graders an hour of extra gym class because there was no one to teach math. clark says that was a mistake. >> that's not part of our policy sending kids to the gym. once we became aware of that, we put in corrective measures to address that. >> reporter: the mother of a seventh grader says that's not the only mistake they made. il to let surprised to find out us know what's going on with the students. >> that is an area that we

a man and his friends arrived at their rental home. half of it burned down. >> airbnb is responding. our abc sister station has the story. >> reporter: this is the weekend getaway home they were hoping for when they booked back in august. it's known as divinity rising, a picturesque dome house located in joshua tree. >> we wanted to just hang out at a nice airbnb, relax and go swinging and have a fun weekend. >> reporter: it's not the home they arrived to find this past saturday. >> we could only see the top half of the house and it looked cool. we could see a giant dome. when we got closer we saw the front of the house and it was completely destroyed.

the doors were kicked in. the windows were smashed. hatch the building was burn down with cars and trash along the front. >> reporter: they discovered there had been a report of a fire on august 29th, but a quick online search turned up even more information. >> several articles relating to a honey oil explosion and that's how we found out about the hosts being arrested. >> reporter: their next call was to airbnb for help. >> we spent two hours arguing with the representatives to try to help us. >> reporter: they found another airbnb nearby. he says his friend who initially booked the home had to pay an additional $400 to stay on such short notice. after eyewitness news reached out, they sent us this statement. we regret our initial handling of this incident did not meet the high standards we set for ourselves and agiunepeence. we've completely refunded miss spencer's trip and provided an additional booking coupon.
