frightening dash cam footage shows a driver in england slamming on the brakes of his van, nearly missing a toddler whose tricycle suddenly veers into the street. a woman is seen pulling the invoice back to safety, fortunately. we're getting our first look at the chilling surveillance video showing the moments before that deadly shooting at a synagogue near san diego. >> that video has just been released by prosecutors in the man's murder trial who are pushing for life in prison. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: for the first time we're seeing video of accused hate crime killer john earnest storming that san diego synagogue with an ar-style rifle, opening fire even before

he got inside. in a preliminary hearing prosecutors laid out their murder case in that april shooting. among the key evidence that surveillance video. entering the synagogue, the shooter immediately encountering laurie gilbert kay. she turns to flee but is cut down by bullets. at the bottom of your screen, the poway rabbi, shot and wounded. several other congregants also wounded. in the sanctuary nearby, terror and confusion take over the congregation. some jump up from the pews and race to the door and turn back. then the gunman's rifle appears to jam. there you can see oscar stewart in the white shirt chasing after him. >> i didn't think about what i was doing. instinctively i just ran toward him, yelled "i'm going to kill you." >> reporter: other congregants follow as ernest flees to his car. an off-duty border patrolman begins firing but misses. in an open letter posted minutes before the shooting ernest allegedly called for the killing of jews then calmly called 911 on himself right after the shooting. >> so what happened?

>> i opened fire at a synagogue. >> reporter: he sat stone-faced throughout much of the hearing. ernest is also accused of trying to torch a nearby mosque in a separate crime. if convicted of all charges he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. so far he's pleaded not guilty to all the charges. as for that ar-style rifle he allegedly used, he purchased it legally, we're told. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> our thanks to matt there. mark zuckerberg returns to capitol hill today for more meetings with lawmakers. >> on thursday the facebook titan met with president trump at the white house. the president tweeting it was a nice meeting. facebook described it as good and constructive. the meetings come as tech giants are facing more regulatory

in beaumont, a television station became part of the news as flooding forced the workers to evacuate. abc's clayton sandell is in texas. >> reporter: the rain and the rescues have not stopped. a race to save hundreds of families and their pets as imelda's deluge slammed southeast texas. >> these flash flood emergencies are life-threatening situations. >> reporter: sheets of rain falling as fast as 5 inches per hour in the middle of the night, upending vehicles and trapping residents. >> these people are stranded in their homes, and so many of the homes look like this. >> reporter: coast guard helicopter crews were medevacing patients out of the flood zone. the storm claiming at least one life. james and kember gibson just finished rebuilding their home after hurricane harvey two years ago. >> it happened very fast. >> reporter: the gibsons and their grandson rescued by r. harvey, w 'vgot to ce to build o recover from this

reported. this one touching down in baytown. >> it lasted about three minutes. >> reporter: neighbors starting the cleanup, glad to be alive. you can see behind me here what all this water is going to the roads. there are abandoned cars everywhere. there were around 300 water rescues here in chambers county. 1,000 closer to houston. and officials will be kept very busy until these floodwaters start to go down. clayton sandell, abc news, winnie, texas. adding to that concern, the houston area won't get a chance to dry out for at least a few days. >> more rain is on the way today. here's the forecast from accuweather's melissa constanzer. >> unfortunately more rain will fall in eastern texas through friday. spotty showers and thunderstorms but they will be numerous in nature which will mean some spots could pick up 1 to 2 inches of rain friday before we see less over the weekend. any rain is bad news for eastern texas. as you can see east of houston they've picked up more than 40 inches of rain.

crest. healthy, beautiful smiles for life. we're back with the rescue of four people from a sinking boat near malibu, california. the boat was submerged by the time rescue crews arrived on the scene. first responders say the 47-foot boat started taking on water about 100 yards offshore. everyone is okay this morning and no injuries were reported. the california highway patrol is investigating the deadly crash of a tour bus. >> it plunged 50 feet off a cliff about 190 miles north of los angeles while carrying the road crew for country music star josh turner. one person was killed in the accident, seven others injured, some of them severely. turner and his band were on a

different bus. investigators don't believe drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash. turning to the frightening moments for passengers aboard a delta airlines flight that was forced to plunge 30,000 feet. >> a warning in the cockpit forced the pilots to put the plane into a steep controlled descent. abc's david kerley covers aviation for us and has more. >> reporter: these delta passengers say they didn't know why their jet was suddenly losing altitude. >> initially it was sort of a panic. there was -- there wasn't any forewarning, it was really just the oxygen masks dropped down. >> reporter: oxygen masks mean cabin pressurization problems. some of the frightened passengers texting loved ones. delta says the crew of the flight from atlanta got a warning, irregularity, and the procedure is to get down to 10,000 feet as quickly as

possible where the air is breathable. >> one of the flight attendants got on the intercom and repeatedly stating, do not panic, do not panic. a lot of people were kind of hyperventilating, breathing really hard. >> reporter: in just eight minutes the jet lost 30,000 feet in altitude, from 39,000 feet down to 10,000, where the masks are not needed. the crew diverted the boeing 767 to tampa, where passengers were rebooked or took a bus to ft. lauderdale. delta has flown in a special team to look at this aircraft, but so far no indication as to why that sensor went off. david kerley, abc news, reagan national airport. >> our thanks to david kerley there. this was scary. a roller coaster ride i definitely would not want to be on. again, passengers were texting their loved ones during this scary incident. and again, the experts point out, yes, a lot of questions here, but if the aircraft was losing pressure, descending the plane like that to a place where the passengers could breathe was the right move and the best solution at the time. >> it's always scary. a lot of people's worst nightmare up in the air. coming up in our next half

the community of baytown. >> everything's destroyed but everyone's arrived. >> reporter: some of these hard-hit areas could get even more rain later today. >> thank you, marcie. the situation so bad a disaster has been declared in 13 texas counties. >> more rain is expected throughout the weekend. >> kenneth, mona, unfortunately friday will still mean more rainfall for eastern texas. more scattered showers and thunderstorms, pretty numerous in coverage here. we're going to get 1 to 2 inches of rain on friday. then we see less in the way of thunderstorm chances through the weekend. any more rain is still problematic. in the atlantic there's still a lot going on but the focus is really jerry here as it continues to move to the northwest. this is a hurricane and will likely stay a hurricane as it moves by the leeward island and then recurves. the question is does it recurve? most models indicate that it should.

we still need to watch this on the east coast as we head through the week. >> and we are watching, melissa, thank you. iranian president rouhani will soon be heading to new york despite escalating tensions. >> the state department issued visas for rouhani and his foreign minister to attend the united nations general assembly next week. after threatening iran with new sanctions, president trump is meeting with his national security team to decide how to respond to the attack. a new jersey man has been charged with scouting terrorism targets in new york and other cities for hezbollah. possible locations included the new york stock exchange, times square, airports, tunnels, and bridges. prosecutors say alexi saab was trained to look for soft spots and targets to maximize damage. authorities say he has been part of hezbollah for more than 20 years. he first came to the u.s. from lebanon in 2000, becoming a citizen in 2008. the nation's death toll in connection to vaping is now at least eight people. the most recent fatality was announced as we learned the fda's criminal investigations unit is helping look into vaping-related cases which have

been reported in 38 states. a congressional panel will hold a hearing on vaping next week. abc's linsey davis has more. >> reporter: local officials are reporting the first vaping-related death in missouri. they say bringing the nationwide death toll to eight. this as the cdc sounds the alarm reporting a surge of 150 more cases in the last week. total now 530 patients. in texas, 28-year-old christopher micheleski is among the hundreds suffering from severe lung illness linked to vaping. >> this is not worth it. don't do it. don't smoke, don't vape. >> reporter: health officials say in cases where they know the ages and gender, three-fourths are male, more than half are under 25. the fda revealed their office of criminal investigation is involved but it still has not traced a particular brand or product linked to the illness, though many included thc and officials are advising consumers, do not add anything to a vape cartridge, and do not buy them off the street.

this criminal investigation started as soon as people started getting sick. fda says their specially trained investigators aren't worried about prosecuting people for using illegal products, they say their focus is the supply chain. the former airline mechanic being held in miami due to potential terroristic sympathies will be back in federal court today. >> that's when abdul alani is expected to enter a plea of on charges of sabotaging a packed american airlines jet back in july. alani was ordered held on wednesday when prosecutors revealed he had isis videos on his phone and that his brother in iraq may be involved with the group. he faces up to 20 years in prison on the sabotage charges. an act of kindness by a flight attendant has led to a change by delta airlines. >> ashley ober, the 16-year-old was born deaf. she flew alone for the first time. moments after boarding ashley sent a text to her mom. it was a picture of a handwritten note by a delta
