a record day of rainfall here for september. it resulted in hundreds of rescues, hundreds of cars being rescued. this after a day across southeast texas that was nothing short of mayhem. >> reporter: this morning, officials in harris county are saying more than a thousand people here have been rescued so far. coast guard helicopter crews met patients and evacuated them out of the flood zone using everything from airboats, tractors and dump trucks to pull people and pets to safety. >> when you get there and you see rivers of water flowing into these neighborhoods and impacting dozens of homes, it really is hescene. >> reporter: guests and employees trapped by rising waters in this beaumont hotel. children at some houston schools were told to shelter in place. it was total chaos on the roadways as parents tried to reach their kids in a day that saw as much as nine inches of rain. stalled out cars littering the

streets and police recovering over 200 vehicles. neighbors lending hands, pushing drivers free where they can. even i chipped in. one, two, three. two cars stalling right in front of us in less than five minute. >> this is one intersection. all around this city cars are abandoned. >> it is an absolute standstill nightmare. >> reporter: major freeways impassable. traffic at a standstill. hundreds of people stuck on the freeway for hours. water rising to the door handles of suvs. >> we're only seeing the very rooftops. >> reporter: drivers abandoning their vehicles. >> everybody was like, get out of the car, get out of the car. it's about to get higher and history. >> reporter: climbing ladders to the overpass to escape to higher ground. north of houston, rushing waters spinning this car like a top. the driver escaping through the window. this high schooler jumping into action saving a mother and her toddler when their car begin to sink in a ditch. >> i kicked my slides off and i took my i.d. off and my wallet and i just ran across all the cars.

i didn't care there were cars coming. i dived into the water. >> reporter: at the city's biggest airport a complete groundstop for a time. nearly 800 flights canceled after getting more than 6 inches of rain in just two hours. cars and buses submerged on the roads to the terminals. the access road beyond that point is under water which stuc. the airport is set to re-open today but schools are closed and obviously it's going to be difficult just getting around here. as a matter of fact, i-10 east of here is shut down because a barge -- a couple of barges slammed into a bridge and they're inspecting it for safety. this is reminiscent of hurricane harvey two years ago and obviously for the people who live here this event across southeast texas came way too quickly. michael? >> thank you, rob. they have been going through a lot there. thank so much for that. it is not over yet. more rain is in the forecast this morning. and ginger is tracking the latest.

good morning, ginger. >> if those pictures didn't tell you how big of a deal this was, imelda now the seventh most rain ever in a tropical system in the united states. so harvey is number one and there are only six others before that. gosh, i so want to show you where the heaviest rain fell, it was east of houston and north closest to conroe, winnie taking it to beaumont. that's why i-10 was shut down there. in just 12 hours and that's why we still have flood warnings out there. but also because we could get another inch of rain. we have more tropical moisture, tom, fueling into southeast texas through the day today. even an inch could put more water on top of something that is so saturated. >> so true, we'll keep an eye on houston all weekend. ginger, thank you. now to that terror arrest. disturbing new details about a new jersey man accused of scouting dozens of high-profile locations for possible attacks including the statue of liberty, the u.s. capitol and places like the george washington bridge. whit johnson is there this morning. whit, good morning. >> reporter: tom, good morning to you. prosecutors say alexei saab

trained with hezbollah overseas and then came to the u.s. before 9/11 even happened. for nearly two decades he was accused of conducting surveillance on so-called hot spots like the george washington bridge behind me here and then feeding that information back to say some of america's most iconic landmarks were watched and scouted for possible attacks. times square, the statue of liberty, the u.n., major airports and bridges, dozens of locations in new york alone. this morning, 42-year-old alexei saab under arrest accused of supporting hezbollah. >> hezbollah is a terrorist organization that's controlled and funded by iran. they're across the world. they have been associated or involved in a number of attacks. >> reporter: the fbi says it's now recovering photos and videos from saab's devices, depicting highly populated locations in other major cities like boston's fenway park and the u.s. capitol where they say he looked for

structural weaknesses to maximize damage. saab was living in new jersey. investigators say he came to the u.s. in 2000, applied for citizenship in 2005, becoming a naturalized citizen just three years later. authorities say he traveled to lebanon ten times in 17 years getting extensive weapons training, ak-47s, m-16s and bombmaking. court documents showing drawings saab allegedly made of explosives. >> it's those kind of locations they're looking for because they want to inflict maximum fear and then potentially maximum economic damage on the united states. >> reporter: prosecutors also say that saab attempted to murder a man he suspected to be an israeli spy and then he confessed to a sham marriage in which he was allegedly paid $20,000 to marry a woman he hardly knew to try to gain her citizenship.

if convicted he faces years in prison. tom. >> all right, whit, thanks so much. cecilia. okay, tom. to washington now with those new developments in the case of the whistle-blower who lodged a complaint about president trump and his phone call with a foreign leader. abc news now learned that call was to the president of ukraine. overnight president trump's personal attorney coming to his defense in an explosive interview. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the very latest. >> reporter: this morning, multiple sources telling abc news that whistle-blower complaint involved a phone call between president trump and the president of ukraine earlier this summer. while we don't yet know the details of the call, "the washington post" reports the president made a promise to a foreign leader alarming one administration official who filed a complaint with the inspector general of the intelligence community. the latest accusation will only fuel the concerns of house democrats who were already investigating whether president trump and his personal attorney,

rudy giuliani, were pressuring ukrainian officials to look into vice president joe biden's diplomatic efforts in that country when his son was doing business there during the obama administration. overnight giuliani at first denied those allegations. >> did you ask the ukraine to investigate joe biden? >> no, actually i didn't. >> reporter: then seconds later admitting he did just that. >> you did ask ukraine to look into joe biden. >> of course, i did. >> you just said you didn't. >> reporter: house intelligence chairman adam schiff is alleging a cover-up after the acting director of national intelligence and the justice department blocked the inspector general from sharing the whistle-blower's complaint with congress. in a letter to acting intelligence director joseph maguire, it was bluntly stated that maguire and other state officials were trying to protect the president. >> do you stand by the statement in your letter? >> it likely involves either the president or people around him. >> reporter: but giuliani showing utter contempt for schiff and any congressional investigation. >> if adam schiff sent me a letter i would just tear it up and throw it away. >> yeah, yeah, yeah, of course, of course.

been more than 500 cases of lung injuries associated with vaping. the fda is now launching a criminal investigation. linsey davis is here with the details. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. yes, as you said this morning missouri officials are reporting the first recorded vaping-related death in the state bringing the nationwide death toll to 8. the victim, a man in his 40s who had a history of vaping but normal lung function prior to starting vaping in may of 2019. now, the cdc reports the number of cases involving vaping-related illness has spiked. 530 people in 38 states and one territory have experienced lung injuries associated with the use of e-cigarette or vaping products. a surge of 150 cases in just the past week. now the fda is revealing that it's pursuing a criminal investigation into these vaping-related illnesses. >> seems like every day we're hearing about a vaping-related illness or death. health officials say most of the patients are young and male. >> that's right, three-fourths of them under the age of 25. in the cases where they have the complete data the majority of the patients are young adults

it was so scary. >> reporter: the jetliner nosing down dramatically losing altitude. some frightened passengers texting their loved ones. >> you know, i thought this is how it's going to end, so i took my son and hugged him up against my chest as hard as i could. >> reporter: the oxygen masks dropping, suggesting that the boeing 767 could be depressurizing. the air so thin with little oxygen at altitude, minutes matter. >> one of the flight attendants i believe grabbed the intercom and repeatedly stated do not panic. do not panic. a lot of people were kind of hyperventilating, breathing really hard. >> reporter: delta said the crew from the flight in atlanta wednesday not good a warning, an irregularity and the procedure is get to 10,000 feet so no warning from the pilots. >> it's scary in the cabin but the pilots don't have time at that initial point. each of those oxygen masks provides about ten minutes of useful oxygen. meaning that the pilots have a very short amount of time to get the airplane down to a lower

altitude. >> reporter: in just eight minutes the jet lost 30,000 feet in altitude from 39,000 feet to 10,000 where the masks are not needed. it doesn't appear this jet actually lost pressure, but it is a real danger. in 2017 an american airlines commuter jet lost pressurization. at least one passenger lost consciousness. and this ryanair jet had to lose nearly 30,000 feet in altitude when it did lose cabin pressure. >> it's actually an uncommon occurrence and so you always see this happy ending, scary for the people in the back, but well handled by the crew. >> reporter: the jet diverted to tampa, the passengers were rebooked to get them to their final destination of ft. lauderdale. delta tells us they flew in a special team to look at the aircraft but so far no indication why the pilots got the warning light. as we say, everyone is okay. >> still a lot of questions.d,ha michae thank you, tom. now to that new backlash for nfl star antonio brown. nike cutting ties with the wide receiv tt xuassault

for the first time since joining the team. paula faris is here with the latest. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning, michael. nike is not expounding on why they're dropping him, only that antonio brown is not a nike athlete. that's a direct quote. meantime, brown spoke to reporters for the first time but he did not address the allegations. antonio brown speaking out on thursday for the first time since being signed as a new england patriot. >> i'm excited and grateful to be here, and to be a part of these guys. look forward to getting out there in the home stadium and being with the team. >> reporter: his remarks coming on the same day that sports juggernaut nike dropped him. nike releasing a statement saying simply, antonio brown is not a nike athlete. the star wide receiver didn't address the recent accusations leveled against him, accused over a week ago by his former fitness trainer of sexually assaulting her. these are allegations that he denies. >> with nike taking the stance he is instantly toxic in this environment. obviously it's a devastating blow to him.

love to your hometown of houston. it's been rough in southeast texas. tropical storm imelda spinning up and moving in and not moving, dumping in some cases 43 inches of rain over a three-day stretch and here in houston an all-time record broken for any day in september with over nine inches falling yesterday and there was chaos because of that. roads were flooded. people were stranded. over 1,000 rescues, both from home or cars of people, and folks who didn't need rescued just left their cars out there. we had a fleet of 150 tow trucks that went out to clear those hundreds of cars that were abandoned. folks that needed rescued, there were good samaritans out there getting creative, one of which dropped a ladder down to a man that came up with a child in his arms, saving that child's life. unbelievable stuff. and the kids were in school so a number of schools had to shelter in place as those schools began to flood. there were two fatalities, one of which was a man driving in

water that was far too deep. many of these scenes reminiscent of hurricane harvey which hit the area two years ago with 60 inches of rain. imelda will go down as number four in the record books but this event is far from history, a big cleanup yet to come. cecilia. >> you're so right about that. okay, rob, thank you. we turn to breaking political news. bill de blasio announced he is dropping out of the 2020 presidential race. the new york city mayor has struggled to gain any traction with voters since announcing his candidacy. de blasio saying this morning that he failed to build support because he entered the race later than he would have liked saying the bar is so high so early. he says he will support the democratic nominee. just moments ago apple's ceo tim cook arriving at the new apple store on fifth avenue right here in new york city, that's the video from moments ago, just in time for the big release of the brand new iphone 11 and 11 pro. the doors have opened and people have been lined up for quite a while they're returning to get the new phone promising a longer battery life. that's huge and as well as the pro model now has an infamous

today they're high school freshmen. zakie, jojo, julia, gabrielle. their parents reflecting on those years. >> what has surprised you the most? >> just to see how gabrielle has developed, you get to see a bit of your daughter at home but you don't get to see her in an environment like this. >> grappling for identity has become something that's palpable. with the video it's heartbreaking because five years ago she's in her own element. . >> reporter: no surprise, experts say. those once self-assured 9-year-olds at 14 now saying -- >> five years ago i was steadily confident in the things that i was doing. >> now there's a lot more pressure. >> i definitely feel less confident of myself. >> were you prepared for the confidence dip? >> when he says in this video he is less confident i try to

ferret out which part is confidence because he's just realized he doesn't know everything and what part is because he doesn't feel he belongs. >> she seemed so confident. i was not fully expecting as big a dip. >> jojo said she doesn't feel confident. she left this morning in a pink halter top and a plaid jacket. maybe she doesn't feel that way but she's actually on top of it. >> reporter: samantha skey is the ceo of she media. >> i want us to look at this age window because i think it's fundamental to long-term confidence. they're going through puberty at the same time with perpetual feedback from social media. i believe social media directly infringes upon confidence. >> reporter: we've all noticed that as our kids grow, so does their reliance on social media. >> why don't people like my posts? i'm not good enough? >> i'm scared to miss out on things. >> i got rid of all my social media. it made me feel really bad

because i felt like i had to post really often. i'm just a lot happier. >> he started on instagram then he felt the pressure and he felt that it was taking away from his life. >> basically looking at what all these other people are doing. >> right. >> and then they're saying well, why am i not doing that. >> if you had known who your 9-year-old was going to grow up at this stage how would you have parented differently? or would you? >> i probably would have held back on the phone and granting that as early as i did. >> maybe a little bit less tv time. tv became a big thing. >> what about between now and their senior year, 14 and 18, what do you think you're going to see? >> a roller coaster of all roller coasters going through. all of them started high school this year. that's a big adjustment for all of them. >> i think they're better people than i was. >> turn around and suddenly your kid is sneering. where did that kid go? it's hard to watch sometimes, but i want parents to take away the kids are going to be okay.

now to a story that started u morning long about the college football fan who just wanted some beer money, but he got and is giving so much more. >> it's amazing. it was a story we did bring you in "pop." carson king held up this sign you're looking at at "college gameday" on espn. it completely changed his life. he'll join us in a moment but first here's the story. >> reporter: it began as a joke. viewers spotting iowa state fan carson king on saturday during espn's "college gameday" holding up a sign asking for beer money. along with his actual venmo account. >> i thought, oh, what would be kind of funny? maybe someone in the crowd will see it and send me a case of busch light. >> reporter: with that the money started pouring, in hundreds then thousands of dollars, way more than carson needed for that case of beer. so carson made a pledge tweeting i will be donating all but enough for one case of busch

light to the university of iowa children's hospital. that tweet catching the attention of venmo and busch beer. venmo joining the cause tweeting, we see a lot of great stories, but this is one of our faves. busch beer adding, this is why carson is king. both companies pledging to match carson's donation. for people like ginger, sometimes when you're cooking here it says burn. what does that mean. >> burn means, you know what that means. >> i know what it's means. >> the pot telling you you'll have a problem. you want to stop, hit the cancel. >> like drop and roll. >> take it out, exactly. take out -- scrape off the bottom then put more liquid in it. it means there's not enough liquid. it warns you before it happens. >> turkey chili here. >> this is the turkey chili. crema. you put out all the spreads. the crema, chili, garnishes. some people like cream, you don't have to put it on everybody's. >> i'm going at it. >> 20 minutes. 20 minutes. okay.
