we're back with this terrifying video of a driver going the wrong way on a major interstate in charlotte. driver drove for at least 10 miles causing others to swerve out of the way. police threw stop sticks in front of the speeding car. eventually she crashed into a tractor trailer and hit an suv head-on. she died at the scene. police have no idea why that driver was going the wrong way. outrage is mounting over an incident of bullying at a middle school in southern california that turned deadly. >> a 13-year-old boy who had been the target of bullies died just days after being beaten in the schoolyard.

here is abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: parents protesting after that deadly school beating in southern california. a throng of them swarming the schools' superintendent and jeering. he had to be escorted by sheriff's deputies to a schoolboard hearing after a 13-year-old boy identified only as d i ego was pronounced clinically dead tuesday. the parents say not enough is being done to protect children. >> kids getting bullied and they're not doing anything. >> reporter: in that schoolyard standoff last week, did i ego is punched once. he staggers back and would never recover. at a vigil his friends mourning him for a sea of community members holding candles. so much pain in that community. one of the reasons they are holding another vigil there. now those two 13-year-old boys allegedly involved in the beating are both facing assault charges as juveniles. a third man has been arrested and charged in connection with mac miller's

he was the one who kept the whistle-blower's report under wraps for weeks, going first to the white house instead of congress. he defended that decision. but when pressed, he also defended the whistle-blower. >> i think the whistle-blower did the right thing. i think he followed the law every step of the way. >> reporter: the whistle-blower claims multiple u.s. government officials informed him that the president of the united states is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 u.s. election. the whistle-blower goes on to describe the president's phone call with the ukrainian president zelensky. the white house released the transcript of that call and it showed president trump asked the ukrainian president to do us a favor and later urged him to investigate his political rival joe biden. pressed, the acting director acknowledged the whistle-blower's account did, in fact, match that transcript. >> would you say that the whistle-blower's complaint is remarkably consistent with the

transcript that was released? >> i would say that the whistle-blower's complaint is in alignment with what was released yesterday by the president. >> the whistle-blower goes on to say that some white house officials were deeply disturbed by the phone call and the likelihood that they had witnessed the president abuse his office for personal gain. and the whistle-blower alleges senior white house officials tried to cover it up. he writes that senior white house officials had intervened to, quote, lock down all records of the phone call, especially the word for word transcript, adding officials said they were, quote, directed by white house lawyers to remove the electronic transcript from the computer system in which such transcripts are typically stored and put it into a separate electronic system that is used to handle and store classified information. the whistle-blower says one official characterized this as an abuse of the system and that

other trump transcripts had been hidden before. the whistle-blower's complaint was submitted to the intelligence community's inspector general, who then determined it was credible and of urgent concern. but the acting director refused to forward the complaint to congress, instead acknowledging he called the white house first even though the complaint was about the president. >> so you went to the white house first. so you went to the subject of the complaint for advice first about whether you should provide the complaint to congress? >> there were issues within this, a couple of things. one, it did appear that it has executive privilege. if it does have executive privilege, it is the white house that determines that. >> but in this case, the white house, the president is the subject of the complaint. >> but many republicans were not having it. >> gentlemen, i want to congratulate the democrats on the rollout of their latest information warfare operation against the president.

>> but while blasting the democrats, there was little defense of how the president handled that call. one republican with this stark message. >> concerning that conversation, i want to say to the president, this is not okay. that conversation is not okay. >> reporter: and he's not alone. a growing number of republicans are voicing concerns. >> republicans ought not to be rushing to circle the wagons and say there's no "there" there when there's lots that's actually troubling here. >> reporter: he says he doesn't know who this whistle-blower is and he refused to say whether he discussed this matter with the president, saying those conversations are privileged. members of congress say they expect to question this whistle-blower sometime soon. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. >> as the prospect of impeachment looms president trump is lashing out in anger and frustration, taking aim at the whistle-blower and the unidentified white house aides. who provided the information oiled in the complaint. >> in private remarks at the

indicate white power. another is the bowl haircut like the one sported by the white supremacist who shot and killed nine back people at emanuel ame church in charleston, south carolina, four years ago. the defense begins its case this morning in the trial of a former dallas cop charged with murdering her own neighbor in his own apartment. >> amber guyger fatally shot jean after mistaking his home for her own and believing he was a burglar. abc's marcus moore reports. >> reporter: prosecutors resting their case against amber guyger trying to recreate for the jury her fateful walk down this hallway ultimately to his front door. prosecutors comparing the view on his floor to the floor where guyger lived down below noting jean's distinctive red floor mat. >> was the floor mat the only one that was a bright red half circle in front of the door? >> yes, sir. >> i thought it was my apartment. >> reporter: in this dramatic body cam footage from the night of the shooting, you can hear guyger claim she mistakenly

>> as much as 3 feet of heavy wet snow and blizzard conditions are expected for the plains, especially western montana. the storm is packing winds of up to 80 miles an hour and record cold temperatures which will likely last all weekend. >> forecasters say tropical storm karen has weakened so much that they expect it to be nearly stationary tonight before coming apart over the weekend. japan airlines is offering a new feature that shows passengers where babies are seated on the plane. >> the seating map includes a child icon when passengers are traveling with children under the age of 2. travelers are cheering the system on social media. >> the airline caution that is the feature may not be error free. the icon might not appear if a ticket was booked through a third party or if there was a last-minute change of aircraft. and that's just for those with children traveling under the age of 2, which i would argue would probably be better than if you're sitting next to a 4-year-old or 3-year-old. no offense to any 3 or 4-year-olds watching.

east of san francisco. it's unclear if she died because she was hit by the truck or if she landed on it. strong winds are believed to have blown her off course. here in new york, a baggage handler for delta air lines has been arrested at his home over a missing stash of more than a $250,000 in cash. >> that baggage handler was taken into custody, but that money is still missing. >> reporter: federal authorities in new york city say a delta baggage handler is the culprit behind a massive cash heist at jfk airport. police arresting 40-year-old quincy thorpe at his home in brooklyn. but the more than $250,000 they say he took is still missing. >> he's denying it. they searched his home and car. they didn't find anything. >> reporter: the money was part of a cash shipment being loaded on to a delta flight bound for miami. when the flight arrived, the money was gone. we've seen baggage handlers behaving badly before. in 2013 new york port authority police set up a sting operation placing cameras in the holds of

planes, catching handlers stealing cash right out of a passenger's wallet. seven workers were charged. in this new case, police say they quickly identified thorpe because at around the time of the theft, thorpe went home sick. meanwhile, delta has launched an internal investigation and thorp has been released on bond. police in virginia are investigating a 12-year-old girl's allegations that her classmates pinned her down and cut her dreadlocks. >> kamari allen is black. she says her three attackers are white and have been bullying her since the school year started. the event allegedly took place monday on the recess of immanuel christian school in spring field. she says the boys called her ugly and said her hair was, quote, nappy. >> he put his hand around my mouth and they started to cut my hair

remove the electronic transcript from the computer systems where they are normally stored. the president behind closed doors vented his frustration in this audio obtained by the l.a. times. >> i want to know who's the person that gave, the whistle-blower, who's the person that gave the whistle-blower the information? because that's close to a spy. you know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart, right? the spies and treason, we used to handle it a little differently than we do now. >> president trump has taken aim at the credibility of the whistle-blower but the acting director of national intelligence said he had no reason to believe the person who made the complaint had any intention of being disloyal to our country, adding the whistle-blower did the right thing by coming forward. >> nancy pelosi said the actions taken by president trump brings the country to a place that she hoped it would never be. >> pelosi told the audience she didn't think the founding fathers ever thought a president would do such a thing and said she doesn't take the impeachment inquiry lightly.

5,000 spots would be set aside for persecuted religious minorities. the cap in 2016 under president obama was 85,000. one human rights group called the plan an unspeakable setback. federal health officials say there has been an alarming increase in the number of people suffering from a vaping related illness. >> the number of deaths linked to vaping nationwide is up to 13 as officials in oregon announced the passing of another person. vaping illnesses are being reported in just about every state. abc's steve osunsami has more. >> reporter: 35-year-old andrew doss is included in new alarming numbers. he's one of more than 800 people suffering from lung injury doctors are linking to the use of e-cigarettes. he says he started vaping in 2018 to help him quit smoking after 15 long years. >> it was definitely the most pain i've ever been through. if the lung collapse didn't cure me of wanting to vape, the chest tube definitely did. >> the cdc is now reporting 805 probably cases of vaping related lung injury across 46 states and the u.s. virgin islands. health officials still aren't sure what's getting people sick.
