may not seem like much. actually it means the beginning of the end of a med in a giants cleanup is finally about to begin. some call it the valentine's day mudslide. a storm sent a home down a saturated hillside. the debris has been sitting there ever since. >> here we are, about eight months later, this is what the scene looks like. finally on september 27thth that debris is ready to be removed. abc 7 news reporters cornell barnard is there. >> reporter: many thought it will never happened. it's about to be cleaned up and hauled away. there's so much, club what's left of the house. the long delay has pushed this

for us tonight, thank you. a blow for parents, hoping to keep their neighborhood school any oakland hills from closing. oakland you'd are unified has decided to close kaiser with sankofa academy. we spoke with parents and parents who are not happy at all. >> reporter: parents targeted the district early this morning in an attempt to stop school disclosure. >> the displacement that happened is terrible, and what happens to the students is traumatizing. >> reporter: last wednesday parents interrupted the school board meeting, even though the board had previously vote to do close kaiser, which will now merge with sankofa elementary. oakland school of language middle school will also close and merge with frick academy. the school district reiterated its position, recommending this

move to the board in the interest of the long-term health and viability of the district and our ability to consolidate resource at fewer schools. what has surprised and upset board members the most is a her sent by keyser teachers, obtained by abc 7 news, basically stating that they are unwilling to work anywhere else about kaiser. teachers wrote we will not participate around the move even if the school board were to approve the coher 29 plan. kaiser is located in the oakland hills, which has a higher income bracket. sankofa is in the flat license. the teachers union accused the district of trying to divide and conger. >> there's this perception that kaiser only cares about kaiser. that's not the case. they're constitutionally reaching out and engaging with the community members at sankofa as well.

behind me. i can tell you there's a lot of people in this community that won't be sorry to see them go. the banners are still flying high aloshattuck avenue. >> i think the real issue is that words change over time, that they mean different things to differ people. >> reporter: the association released a statement -- we want all members of the larger community to feel invited and wanted in our neighbor -- the suspension of the name comes after some business owners and residents objected toit, saying the term "ghetto" is especially hurtful. >> i'm happy there's an opportunity to revisit this and take a look at it from a different perspective for the people in the community of

color. >> they're going to get rid of the name. what do you think? >> good. it's not a gourmet ghetto, anyway. >> reporter: not everyone agrees abandon. >> it's so berkeley to get upset about that. i can't even begin to tell you. >> oh. >> you know what i mean? do i really care, with all the problems in the world? probably not. i mean, we're dealing with climate change. >> when we were first looking for places to live, this neighborhood was branded at gore nay ghetto. everything you use you to find a location is brand the gourmet ghetto. >> reporter: now, the famed restaurant chez panisse is right in the middle of the district. i spoke with alice waters. this is what she said to say. she was very pleased -- i just don't believer in the word gourmet. i think it's a word that is really associated with spending money, and ghetto is so

encampment, the city of hayward, police were responding to calls by the neighborhoods around here two, three calls a week. >> reporter: the developer bought the property approximately 4 1/2 years ago with a vision in mind. >> we're building 474 apartments above 82,000 square feet of retail. >> scott says the future will be called lincoln landon. the groundbreaking is monday with the project expected to open in 2 1/2 years, that when this will look more like this. >> our entire site will be affordable, as what we say, compared to the peninsula. >> hayward residents say they're thrilled. derek broadway is especially excited. he recently moved from north carolina to be closer to his daughter. >> the neighborhood is lovely. i wish i had come out ten years ago, but it's just so expensive.
