doors. >> we're looking in why this is happening and we're joined live. liz? >> reporter: hi, larry and ama. it's friday night. we're here outside palomino, what was palomino. people have been showing up here for happy hour, only to find out that it is closed for good. and palomino is not the only one. several restaurant owners saying san francisco just makes it too hard to stay open. after 26 years on the embarcadero, the iconic palomino sign coming down. it's just the latest san francisco restaurant to close its door. >> palomino, pete's tavern, mission pie, the list goes on. >> reporter: another one, the south indian restaurant chain, shutting down the t rise in food delivery. it has changed eating habits and restaurant profits. >> we're giving up about 25%, 30% of our prices to the

delivery companies. >> reporter: mittra is not alone. jeff foster closed two restaurants this year. he penned this essay where he said customers want instagramable food delivered to their doors without having to wait. he said we were a $3 million company at the time, but even that wasn't enough to survive in san francisco. the golden gate restaurant association has been looking into the trend. closings are outpacing openings by 9%. last year there were 325 closings versus 298 opens. rising rent costs and increased labor requirements. >> these laws were well-intentioned, but i don't think you rilize what a devastating impact it's going to have on neighborhoods. the restaurants have vibrancy to it, something we feared for a while. >> reporter: and that iconic

palomino sign coming down right now. restaurant owners have asked for considerations, including subsidizing the high costs for small businesses. in the meantime, some are trying to adapt and going virtual. they literally only cater to delivery companies. live in san francisco, abc 7 news. meanwhile in berkley, a controversial decision about the neighborhood home to many of the city's restaurants. >> it's a controversial decision, but a north berkley business association has decided to drop the name gourmet ghetto. it was adopted in 2014 but commonly used by residents and visitors for many years before that. >> laura anthony is live on shaddock avenue with the u were saying, the name has only been used officially for only about the last five years, but's been part of the local dialog here for decades. but now the local associa evolv

announced it's time to get rid of it. the banners are still flying high along shaddock avenue, but the name, gourmet ghetto's been officially dropped by the north shaddock association. >> if there is a name even in common parlance and in the culture that is offensive to some members of our community, perhaps to many messages of our community, then we should try to change the culture around that name. >> reporter: in a statement, the north shaddock association said we want all members of the larger community to feel invited. and with respect to those who feel a strong kwex to tconnecti spirit of the gourmet ghetto name we support dropping the moniker. it comes after some business owners and residents objected to it, saying the ghetto is especially hurtful. >> it's great that we're actually reviewing this and

abc 7 news. >> good talkin' to you. in the north bay, the winter cleanup is just under way. >> the debris from a massive landslide is finally ready to be removed. cornell bernard is live in sauce lee leto with details. >> reporter: many thought this would never happen eight months later, but all this landslide debris is about to be clean the up and hauled away. so much of it, including what's left of that house, the long delay has pushed the project into the rainy season. that's a big concern. >> i'm sure there's a lot of nervous neighbors next to that property anytime it rains now. >> reporter: neighbor oscar salavar speak jiegiant excavator moves debris.

a winter storm unleashed a landslide from the top of kress the avenue. >> i was looking at the debris. i was pretty amazed by it. them i heard her calling for help. >> reporter: ted heard those cries for help after susan gordon survived the mudslide while asleep in her house. the home was carried off the foundation and smashed to bits. >> my life is gone. i have to build from here. every day is a new day. >> reporter: maher says he feels lucky but wants all this debris to be gone. >> we're just glad our house is still here. it's frustrating, but yeah. >> it's a big job. >> reporter: kevin mcgowan says it's taken so long mostly due to funding delays from fema. now the worry is rain, likely not far away. >> always concerned about the rainy season, been talking to the contractor from day one about how are they going to address rainfall if it does

occur. we want to make sure we are filtering any water coming off the site and make sure it's controlled in a way that doesn't cause problems downstream. >> reporter: oscar just hopes it all goes according to plan. >> i think it's a little foolish to start this close to the rainy season. >> reporter: after the debris is gone, the city tells me they will shore up the hill and create an area for stormwater runoff. they say it should all be done by december. corps noel bernard, abc 7 news. climate change activists converged on chevron headquarters where the group made of mostly children were picketing as part of the global climate strike. many are holding signs to pay attention to the movement ignited by a 16 activist. there was also a small group of counter protesters. >> falling.

families and the kids. >> reporter: oakland unified released a statement that reads in part, quote, after consulting with our police departments, we decided out of an abundance of caution to cancel the game. we are working to find a later daetz in the seas date to reschedule the game. no date or place has been settled on. if so, they won't announce it. the jv says it could affect their future. >> you get calls from san diego state, they come to the game to see both parties.. >> reporter: so administrators in both oakland unified and san leandro unified are supposed to be working on scheduling for a later date. that date has not been settled on yet, and coaches at san leandro weren't talking but coaches at mcclimbens say you have to treat like there's not going to be a game and move on.

valley church twice in the past six months, stealing thousands of dollars worth of goods that belong to a local boy scout troupe. >> reporter: frustration for many at almaden hills church in san jose after a break-in sometime sunday into monday. >> they came over the rafters, had a bolt cutter in order to get the garage door open and the trailer hitch, the lock off the trailer hitch, and they took the trailer. >> reporter: a trailer belonging to boy scout troupe 262, filled with more than $12,000 worth of camping equipment, everything from multiple tents to cooking supplies all gone in a matter of minutes. >> it could be that the people who stole it and ended up with the trailer were not the same folks. >> reporter: that's because police found the trailer at a homeless encampment, however, hoev sto whoever stole it had to have the

bett building a better bay area. >> the site of the old mervin's ore. >> woodrow has our story. >> reporter: pretty soon, this empty hayward lot will begin looking more like this. in 2008, retailer mervins shut down after nearly 60 years in business. >> it sat vacant for well over ten years, became an eyesore and blight on the community of hayward. >> reporter: crews demolished the property in 2017. >> became a homeless encampment. the city of hayward, the police were responding to calls by the neighborhoods around here. two and three calls a week. >> reporter: developer dolinger bought it with a vision in mind. >> we're building 474 apartments, but 82,000 square feet of retail. >> reporter: scott says the future of hayward will be called

presentation high school is hiring an outside law firm to investigate past reports of sexual abuse and misconduct at that catholic school. they claim administrators mishandled the claims. one student wrote in the "washington post" two years ago. presentation has hired a law firm that specialized in probing sexual harassment complaints. federal investigators say a two-week investigation of the burned-out wreckage of conception, the diving boat, has not revealed the cause of the fire, but investigation is far from over and parts of the vessel have been sent to labs for testing. 34 people died when the bt fbi, attorney's office in los angeles and e safety board are taking part in this investigation. fall horse racing season began today at embattled santa anita park in southern california.

30 horses died during the park's winter-spring meeting. it's propgt it's prompted activists to call for it to be shut down. jerry hollendorfer was banned from santa anita and other tracks under the same leadership. four of his horses died at santa anita. he is still banned there. today we saw prince harry follow in his mother's foot steps quite literally. he traveled to angola to help clear an area of land mines. it's the same exact walk the spot is now known as han 2.

police in virginia are investigating an alleged assault on a black sixth grader who says several white students held her down and forcefully cut her
