highery n rs iththlosill over rtbay today. wetalk about that warmup coming up this week in a few minutes. >> you can stay on top of the weather with the abc 7 news app. it is free to download in the app store. just enable the push notifications. developing news, san mateo police are investigating a shooting that involves officers who injured two suspects. police say they were patrolling the parking lot of the hillsdale shopping center when they spotted a car they bieve was stolen. the driver and second suspect led officers on a chase and threw credit cards out of the car along south el camino real. the suspects hit another car and ended up in a cul-de-sac. officers got out of the car and approached them. that is when the suspects drove their car towards officers and one officer opened fire injuring them. detectives are trying to answer questions in their

investigation. >> why were they throwing credit cards out of the car. what is up with the vehicle in question. they're checking the vin number, 'tbeicense plates thadndit our investigations bureau will be working around the clock on this to find out what exactly was happening. >> it's unclear what conditions the suspects are currently in. "abc 7 mornings" reporter luz pena spoke with witnesses. >> rapid gunshots at least 15 to 20 and heard a ton of cop cars and ambulances and stuff. >> reporter: the shooting took place right across from her building. she described the scene as chaotic with at least 30 officers asking residents to move out of the way. >> from our balcony we could see there was a white car parked down the street and it clearly had been shot. there were two windows that were missing. >> reporter: according to witnesses two people inside the white vehicle in question were taken to hospital. >> some of the officers and paramedics leaning down on the ground so i think the people were already on the ground and put them into the ambulances and

drove away. >> reporter: luz pena abc 7 news. new overnight police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead in petaluma. it happened around 8:00 last night in the parking lot of the petaluma village premium outlets. police say they received several reports of gunshots and a car crash. when officers arrived they found a man inside a car who had been shot and tried to save him but were unsuccessful. police believe the man did not die by suicide. a suspect has not been identified. in the north bay a fire in sonoma county is under control after forcing some evacuations. flames sparked just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon. you can see on the map along highway 121 near schellville. it ripped through an event center that also has some residences. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has more on the fire that did destroy some buildings but did spare lives. >> this is where i used to live. now i'm looking for a new home. >> reporter: marc foley spoke

out of fear as he watched the fast-moving fire whip across garden pavilion event center. he lives in the victorian house which ended up being spared. >> a good quarter of the property or more is gone. >> reporter: cal fire dumped water on the blaze which forced 100 people to evacuate and shut down two weddings at cornerstone gardens and a 70th birthday party at the pavilion. you can see party hats, wine, food, left behind as guests ran. >> they set up tables. that's completely gone. all these barns all in the front are completely gone. all the vehicles are completely gone. and the shed building is completely gone. >> reporter: the fire started in this ditch on state road 121 in front of the pavilion event center and across from gloria ferrer winery. it headed south and the wind picked it up and pushed it into a building. >> i guess the lord picked today to have the wind the way it was. this is the windiest it's been

in weeks. >> reporter: the wind only added to the list of problems firefighters faced. >> just trying to figure out where it's going with the smoke laying on the ground, blowing like it was, trying to do the evacuations, covering the different roads making sure that it hadn't gotten through, didn't ember cast out on us. >> reporter: roads were closed and traffic was diverted out of the fire zone. for evacuees this brings back vivid memories from the north bay fires. >> just a couple years ago we were all running for our lives. >> reporter: in this case three buildings were lost. the cause is under investigation. in sonoma county, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. happening today, a memorial service will be held for one of the victims of july's mass shooting at the gilroy garlic festival. 26-year-old trevor irby was among three people killed can on july 28th at christmas hill park. he was visiting from upstate new york. the memorial will take place at keuka college which is in new york state's finger lakes region. irby recently graduated from the school. a memorial scholarship has been

set up in his honor. three teens recovering from gunshot wounds following a shooting near richmond high school. police say it happened friday night after a football game at de anza high school. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the details and new video released by investigators. >> reporter: the sound of gunshots clearly heard on this new surveillance video released by richmond police. people can be seen running away. it happened near de anza high school friday night after a football game ended versus rival pinole valley high. >> we have about four to five -- we have about 400 to 500 people on the campus. >> officers responded to the 3300 block of morningside drive where there was reports of a fight. when they arrived on scene, they heard gunshots in the area and they saw a large group dispersing. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: there was chaos and panic minutes after the shooting. police say three teens, a girl and two boys, were wounded.

two of them in serious condition. >> this is a very unfortunate event right now. we have three victims that don't appear to be associated to any part of a fight or any gang violence. >> reporter: police don't yet have a motive for the shooting. >> it's sad. yeah. it's a great community. >> reporter: parents can't believe it. >> it's hard enough for kids to go to school without violence, gang related, whatever issue it is, you know. >> reporter: investigators are still looking for suspects. they may have left the scene driving a dark colored sedan. if you have information, call police. in richmond, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. listen to this, families looking to let loose and get lost in the petaluma pumpkin patch's famous corn maze were turned away when a man running from police hid in the maze hoping to evade officers. it was quite the spectacle yesterday morning at the stony point road pumpkin patch. when officers arrived looking for 29-year-old ryan kenneth watt. he is accused of violating a

restraining orderer by stalking his former girlfriend on-line in person and using a gps tracker secretly planted on her car. petaluma police tried arresting watt at a homeless camp. that is when police say watt ran across all lanes of highway 101 and sought refuge in the corn maze. >> a needle in a haystack would be a good description. it's called four acres of corn maze and having been in that with my young kids, i can attest it's not easy to walk through even under calm and placid circumstances, let alone looking for someone hunkered down in it. >> the lieanarenuted ft orsa wi got help from the chp and a fixed wing airplane. he was arrested without incident at 11:00 a.m. this afternoon democratic presidential candidate kamala hours will officially open her first california campaign office in oakland. yesterday harris was in the bay area and visited the manila town heritage museum for a series of meet and greets in

new details about the motivation of 13 small arson fiers set near milpitas last weekend. our media partner the mercury news reports the suspect told investigators he was in an emotional state over his wife's death. police say freddie graham was in town from missouri for a 50th high school reunion when he set the fires. his classmates say he appeared happy at the reunion. graham is being held on $2 million bail. happening today a huge crowd expected for an event to be classified as only in san francisco. the 36th annual fulsome street fair, billed as the world's biggest lake tahoe festival is taking over part of the south of market neighborhood today. fulsome street will be closed between 8th and 13th street. the festival is expected to draw 250,000 people and features 200 vendors, booths and live music and it runs from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

in san francisco with the average high of 70. we're starting out clear but numbers have bottomed out into the 30s and 40s in many locations. an area of low pressure, a system rotating to the north of us, a piece of it, and a piece of energy sliding down into the bay area today could offer up a shower or two. mainly for the north bay. here are the current numbers with low 40s, santa rosa, 50 san jose. one of the warmer locations by the water, 53 san francisco, 54 half moon bay. live look outside, little bit of breeze out there, not much, but upper elevations still kind of gusty. clear and chilly this morning but then the clouds increase and isolated shower is possible in the hills, warmer days arrive by the middle of the week through the end of the week. no wild weather after we see our temperatures moderate throughout the middle of the workweek. as we go through the rest of the day, it does get breezy out there. the winds will be gusty at the water but not as windy as yesterday. how about 10 to 15 miles an hour for most of you, but with the

temperatures only in the 60s to low 70s, it's certainly going to feel like a cool autumn day. we are sunny until about the early afternoon and then those cumulus clouds begin to build up on the hill so marin, sonoma, napa, notice you could see a little bit of precip throughout, a couple hundredths possibly not out of the question as the clouds will hold a bit of moisture and that sun creating that more unstable atmosphere in the afternoon. couple hundredths to a tenth in novato and the blue indicating on the east bay and south bay could see trace amounts there. in the mountains looking at scattered snow anywhere from 2 to 4 inches additionally above 6,000 feet and another 6 inches highest elevations we saw about 4 inches and now right on through 4:00 tomorrow, looking at there with numbers today anywhere from 5 to 13 degrees below average. 63 today in san francisco. that's 7 degrees below the average. you should see 78 in mountain

view, 68 san mateo, 70 santa rosa. over into the east bay, it's common to have the low 80s but 70 today for concord, 69 in san jose, and we're going to look at the cooling trend, temperatures bottoming out tomorrow for the coolest day of the week on monday. the accuweather seven-day forecast, 60s to a 70 degree reading with an isolated shower. tomorrow we start out cool again, highs only in the upper 60s and downloading the accuweather app trend when we warm up. by the afternoon on tuesday we could gain an easy 5 degrees inland as high pressure begins to move in and as it gets closer wednesday and thursday should top out around 80 inland, even around the bay, numbers into the 70s, so a lot of sunshine on the way a coming, kind of cool out there the next few. >> you took out your down coat we're getting to that time of year. thanks. season two of "the rookie" premiers on abc with the

news to build a better bay area, this is "abc 7 mornings." good morning on this sunday, we are starting this half hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> liz, let's look at it for a while. you don't have to go out in it yet because it's cold. temperatures have bottomed out in the 30s in some of our inland valleys in the north bay, those protected valleys, this is walnut creek where it is nice and sunny, temperatures 13 degrees below average. 53 downtown, 49 in redwood city and oakland. with 44 in gilroy, pretty shot from mount tam. clear sky, 42 petaluma with 50 in concord. 24-hour temperature change, pretty dramatic by the delta. 13 degrees cooler there and the winds, upper elevations gusty. we will be breezy at the surface

santa anita park in southern california. yesterday was the second day of the racetrack's fall meeting. a 3-year-old colt named m tech was euthanized after it was determined the horse had two broken forelimbs. 32 horses have now died since santa anita's winter spring meeting. the death led activists to call for the park tore shut down and reform safety protocols. the chief veterinarian for the group that owns santa anita says, quote, as is protocol for santa anita we will open an immediate inquiry into what factors could have contributed to m tech's injury. it is no secret that life after football can be rough for former nfl players. yesterday abc 7 news was at ucsf cardiovascular research building where there was a free clinic to give them heart and orthopedic screenings. when players retire they frequently aren't as careful with their health. coupled with side effects of playing the game it can add up.

you will notice that the wind won't be as brisk out there but we will have a breeze for sure . live doppler 7 with the patchy low clouds, otherwise it's a system to the north that is going to slide down, bring more energy, more cool air, allowing for a slight chance of a shower mainly in the north bay later today. a look at the east bay, walnut creek nice and clear, chilly, isolated showers possible in the north bay hills. that's your best chance and it will be warmer by the middle of the week that takes us into the end of the week as well. we're below average. today we're in the 60s, maybe even 70s. our warmest time of year in san francisco is september at about 70 for your high. 7 degrees below average. oakland should be in the low 70s. we should see low 80s in concord. 13 degrees and 8 and 9 degrees cooler respectively on the peninsula and in the south bay. we're starting out clear. the stratocumulus clouds come into play with the cool air in place. the warm september sun and that allows for the buildups there

ideal place for some of the state's first farms to pop up. today scientists are hacking through thick brush to see if restoring the marshes is a way to reduce carbon dioxide in the air. co2 what scientists believe is responsible for global warming. sensitive instruments monitor this wetland as it breathes and absorbs carbon dioxide. >> we are at the stage now with unprecedented levels of carbon dioxide or co2 based on fossil fuel combustions since the revolution. >> reporter: meteorologist dennis says the delta could hold clues on how we can reduce the carbon dioxide levels locally. ariana ortiz a post doc fellow from barcelona looking for the answers. >> we are trying to measure how much organic carbon built up in the soil. >> reporter: this part of marsh near antioch was once farm land and restored back to marshlands by the california department of water resources in 1997.

ariana and her team hike in. and set up a ladder to take samples from the earth. hammering through decades of sentiment to remove valuable evidence. >> the goal is to measure carbon sequestration rates in the soil. >> reporter: carbon sequestration is the process of taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and storing it in the ground. according to a study published last year by another cal researcher wetlands effectively sequestered carbon. in her lab at uc ariana is building on that study. going deep into the marsh's past she takes her samples from a freezer and cuts them into one centimeter slices so she can analyze the amount of carbon that's been sequestered underground. >> we have 20 years of greenhouse gas exchange data and so i'm going to look at the soils and the carbon capture to integrate like short time scales with longer time scales. >> reporter: in theory
