>> the president now says he deserves to meet the whistle-blower and the person who secretly provided the information about the president's call to ukraine. as the whistle-blower prepares to testify before lawmakers, attorneys are raising concerns about his safety. >> abc's serena marshall has the latest from washington. good morning, serena. >> reporter: kenneth, elizabeth, good morning to both of you. the president spent much of his weekend tweeting out a defense of that phone call along with retweeting his allies. even his white house sources tell us they do not plan at this time to set up a war room. as the impeachment probe heats up, the president's allies doubling down. >> the salem witch trials have more due process than this. >> this individual is a saboteur. >> first did they have firsthand knowledge and, second, what is their motivation? was there some kind of bias? this individual has problems on both of those counts. >> reporter: going on the offense attacking the unknown whistle-blower's credibility even as the intelligence community's trump appointed inspector general found the complaint to be credible and of urgent concern. the president arguing he

over the weekend the accuser. whistle-blower's attorney in a letter expressing serious concerns we have regarding our client's personal safety explaining certain individuals are offering a $50,000 bounty for the whistle-blower's identity and cited these comments made by the president last week in video obtained by bloomberg. >> spies and treason, we used to handle it a little differently than we do now. >> reporter: even with that concern though, the whistle-blower ready to testify. >> we allow that testimony to go forward in a way that protects the whistle-blower's identity. >> reporter: a new abc news/ipsos poll shows nearly two-thirds of americans saw the president's actions on the call as a serious problem. congress may be on recess but democrats continue to map out their impeachment inquiry with hearings, subpoenas and depositions, even as the house speaker says this phone call is just one part of their investigation. kenneth, elizabeth.

>> serena marshall there in washington, thank you. and congress is in recess for two weeks but work on the impeachment inquiry continues. here is a look at what happens now, intel committee chair adam schiff says the whistle-blower will testify very soon. it will likely happen behind closed doors. the inspector general who handled the whistle-blower complaint and deemed it of urgent concern will testify this friday. as for the long term some in the house want to prepare the articles of impeachment by thanksgiving so the full house can vote by the end of the year. and sources tell abc news that president trump is, quote, upset and disappointed that his former homeland security adviser said he's deeply disturbed by the phone call. >> abc news contributor tom bossert is the first former white house aide to speak out against the president and his staff. >> yeah, i'm deeply disturbed by it as well and this entire mess has me frustrated. you and i both lived through the impeachment of president clinton and saw how frustrating and dividing it can be, and i've just spent the week overseas,

and i'll tell you, the whole world is watching this. that said it is a bad day and a bad week for this president and for this country if he is asking for political dirt on an opponent. >> bossert also said he does not see evidence of an impeachable offense. the state department is reportedly stepping up its investigation stemming from the hillary clinton email scandal. "the washington post" says in recent weeks the state department has contacted as many as 130 of its current and former employees who worked for hillary clinton when she was secretary of state. the investigation is reportedly looking into whether secure channels were used to transmit information that was not considered classified at the time but later designated as such. now to the midair scare on board a united flight. the plane was forced to make an emergency landing as passengers inside the cabin could see a piece of an engine panel detaching. it's a passenger's worst nightmare. looking out of your airplane

window midflight and something flappi on the wing. that object, a partially detached panel from the engine. >> there was a pop and a bang and then suddenly just shaking. my husband and i grabbed each other's hand and knew that something did not feel right. like an eerie feeling cast itself over the plane. >> reporter: the terrifying scene unfolded sunday morning. united flight 293 had just left denver when the pilot called for help. >> we need to get back to denver relatively speaking as quick as possible. >> when you get a chance, nature of the emergency. >> a panel has become detached from the airplane. we have about six hours of fuel and 196 people. >> reporter: the flight was headed for orlando but just before 8:30 a.m., roughly a half hour after takeoff, it landed safely back in denver. >> this pilot really took some pretty heroic decisive action and turning it around and landing it back in denver potentially saved some lives. >> reporter: this photo of the plane shows the mangled panel with the interior of the engine exposed. >> you might say it's

inconvenient if you have part of the engine shroud blow off the airplane, but the real danger is if a part hits a window, cracks it and causes a decompression and the loss of a passenger. >> reporter: united said in a statement united flight 293 from denver to orlando returned to the airport due to a mechanical issue with one of the engines. the flight landed safely and taxied to a gate where customers deplaned normally. now, none of the passengers were injured. it's not clear what caused the engine cover to peel back. turning now to an early and dangerous blast of winter for the high rockies. montana was especially hard hit with a historic snowfall. at least four feet of snow fell in browning, montana. the governor declared a winter storm emergency. residents were warned to stay at home and off the roads due to dangerous road conditions. time now for a look at your weather this morning. good morning. talk about a wintry weekend across the west with blizzard-like conditions across montana. that snow will be wrapping up

but we still have lots of widespread cold air in place. you make your way into the plains and the midwest. different seasons, summerlike heat will be streaming on in, in fact, all along the east coast as we head through early and middle parts of this workweek. we're talking record-breaking heat from the southeast up into the northeast as well. i'm accuweather meteorologist adam del rosso. coming up, another safety issue for a fleet of boeing planes after several cracks are found in some jets. also ahead, four inmates on the loose after overpowering guards. new details about how they escaped as we learn overnight why they were in jail in the first place. and breaking overnight, a raging fire destroys several homes along the carolina coast. that dramatic video coming in next. .

a massive fire on the north carolina coast is under control this morning. a drone captured images of six burning homes in surf city. crews from three fire departments battled the flames. no injuries have been reported. the cause of the fire has not been determined. breaking overnight three of the four inmates who escaped an ohio jail were captured. they were being held for drug trafficking, robbery and assault. they overpowered two female correction ago officers with a homemade shank. police say christopher clemente was spotted later at the westmoreland mall near pittsburgh. the mall was shut down and searched. >> our detectives have established that the inmates had the assistance in escaping from at least one individual on the outside. >> there's four inmates running around, and it's not even safe for him. we don't know where they're at, who they're with, and the fact

that they're escaping, one of these guys has escaped twice now. >> this jail break is the third in under a month for the same facility. one of the men currently on the run had previously fled with another init mate, but authorities tell us that pair was quickly caught at the time. now to a new potential safety issue involving boeing passenger planes. the faa is instructing airplanes to inspect all boeing 737 next generation jetliners after the company reported evidence of cracking on a part that attaches the wing to the fuselage. and the part is supposed to last for the life of the plane. the new concern comes as boeing's 737 max fleet remains grounded in the wake of two deadly crashes. forever 21 has filed for bankruptcy. faced with growing online competition and changing consumer taste, the retailer known for fast fashion is closing nearly 200 stores in the u.s. and shutting down operations in 40 countries. the company says it doesn't expect to exit any major u.s. markets.

[ screaming ] >> reporter: police say the driver, 48-year-old catherine maccarone, was under the influence while behind the wheel earlier this month. newly released video capturing the panic on the bus. young students screaming on the edge of their seats. one seen hanging on tight. >> i am crazy. i'm totally crazy. >> reporter: a boy rushing home to call 911 telling the operator his driver sped through three red lights. >> she's like wobbling and then her eyes, you can tell, she was drunk. >> reporter: did she smell of alcohol? >> her breath sort of smelled

like alcohol. >> reporter: maccarone driving 90 students that afternoon later arrested. >> this is going to be a dui. >> is it? >> yeah. >> i was hoping the kid wasn't right. >> it's concerning as a mom. you want your kids to be safe when they go to the bus. you're trusting that they are safe every single day getting to school and that would be awful if something happened to them. >> reporter: she's charged with a dui and two counts of reckless endangerment, officers noting they smelled an obvious odor of intoxicants. >> i feel pretty upset. it's not something that should happen. i mean, someone that drinks and drives, they should get in trouble, plain and simple, and, you know, we trust our kids to them. >> reporter: that school district says it's implemented new safety procedures to better screen for drivers. as for maccarone, she was not available for comment but has since resigned, and she will appear before court in about two weeks. rachel scott, abc news, washington. >> our thanks to rachel scott. and the lawyer for a man charged with driving an suv through a mall says his client is not a terrorist.

police say javier garcia was behind the wheel as shoppers raced for cover in a mall outside chicago. amazingly no one was hurt. some witnesses say they barely got out of the way. >> all of a sudden this suv started coming towards my kiosk and if i would have stayed in my kiosk, i wouldn't be here today. i'd be gone. >> law enforcement has always been concerned about malls. it also, unfortunately, is a fairly soft target. >> mr. garcia is not a terrorist. he has never had an issue with the law before. >> garcia is being held on domestic terrorism charges without bail. his lawyer says the 22-year-old has mental health issues and is being treated for paranoid schizophrenia. a ride in grandma's car ended with a 9-year-old ohio boy in trouble with the law. police say he took it for a joyride and at one point was going more than 80 miles per hour on interstate 75 near dayton. the boy was caught after he crashed into a van but he is

okay. the child was released to his grandmother. he is expected to face a number of charges. a new study finds that too much exercise might be bad especially for the brain. researchers found that athletes who overtrained made more impulsive choices when it came to their finances, eating habits and self-care. that's because they displayed more fatigue in the cognitive control part of the brain system. that likely caused them to have trouble decision-making. all right, now to sports. the dallas cowboys got their first loss of the season in sunday night football. they scored just one touchdown against the saints who were without star quarterback drew brees. new orleans picked off a hail mary pass on the final play. the saints won it, 12-10. baseball's regular season wrapped up last night and it was a record-setting season for home runs. 6,776 homers were hit this season. that is 11% better than the old

we'll check your commute out of the central valley coming up. developing news this morning, hundreds of forever 21 stores are set to close because the company's filed for bankruptcy. they're saying that this is an important step for them to move forward and secure its future. amy hollyfield is joining us live with more details about this. good morning. good morning. look at this massive store in walnut creek. this forever 21 is huge. if it closes it would leave a large, empty corner space at the broadway plaza shopping plaza. there's a huge one in union square. the clothing store has not announced which stores it will close. saying it will file a motion to shut down 178 of its more than 800 stores. the retailer is known for fast fashion. it was founded in 1984 in los angeles. it is also known for its massive stores. its flagship store in times
