lights on this morning. very slow out of the central valley as per usual for about an hour drive now southbound -- pardon me, westbound on 580. on 880 in the fremont area near mission we have an accident blocking a couple lanes of traffic there. emergency crews are on the scene to the redwood city area. we have southbound near whipple an accident involving a big rig, three lanes blocked there and a car is stuck to the big rig. they'll have to get a tow to get the cars out of there. that's what's happening now. back in just a few. a live look at sfo. it will be basically impossible to park and pick somebody up without having to pay. >> the days of parking for free for 30 minutes are officially over. abc 7 news reporter jobina fortson is at the airport with why this change is being made. jobina? >> reporter: the idea behind the free 30-minute parking was to

reduce traffic, but airport officials say it didn't make much of a difference so why keep it around? so they're also saying the free parking was a test program during the summer and peak holiday travel seasons. there were other policy changes that did help reduce traffic so starting today if you're in the hourly garage for more than ten minutes you will have to pay. that means entering and exiting the garage all within ten minutes is $2 per 15 minutes and $36 max for 24 hours. the concept of the free 30-minute parking may be revisited once we get to the busier travel holiday months. for us thanksgiving time in november. jobina fortson, abc 7 news. released video of what shows a bay area man acting as a spy.

he is leaving a white envelope with $25,000 in a hotel room. he came back to pick up an sd card containing classified information and authorities say he handed it over to beijing. what he didn't know he was being set up by a double agent working for the u.s. government. >> the double agent would remove the cash and take the sd card to the same place the money had been left. >> the agency says this went on for four years. he was arrested at his home on friday. a former yahoo! engineer has pleaded guilty to hacking into more than 6,000 accounts. he admits that he targeted younger women looking for sexual photos and videos. prosecutors say after he gained access he got into their i cloud, facebook, gmail accounts and stored the private images on a computer he later destroyed.

he could face five years in prison. the new york city police department says the death of an officer in the line of duty was the result of friendly fire. he was killed early sunday morning investigating gang activity in the bronx. they say he and two others were chasing a suspect and got into a violent struggle. they fired several times and both were killed. >> tay marks two years since the las vegas mass shooting. crosses honor the 58 people who died. more than 850 other people were hurt during the tragedy in 2017. a gunman fired shots from a hotel room into a crowd at a music festival. police believe he took his own life. this was the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. chanel miller, the sexual assault survivor in the case involving former stanford swimmer brock turner, is sending the message to other survivors.

this is a great story. the sunnyvale department of public safety recognizing a police officer who saved a life at 30,000 feet. stephen cronin and his wife were on a 12-day trip to ireland. it got cut short, this is the sad part, because they were in a car crash and his wife suffered serious injuries. the couple then took a flight back to sfo. several hours into the flight they heard a loud thud. a passenger fell and hit her

head and was unconscious. she eventually regained cautiousness and cronin and two other passengers cared for her until the flight landed. >> we stayed with her the full three and a half hours. se landed still on the ground laying in the middle of the aisle. that's why we got into the job was to help pple and they would all do the same thing. >> cronin has been with the sunnyvale department of public safety for nearly 13 years. today is the deadline for democratic presidential candidates to qualify for the october 15th debate. candidates have to get at least 2% support on at least four national or early state polls in order to qualify. 12 candidates will take part and that includes the ten who were in last month's debate hosted by abc news plus gabbert and billionaire and activist tom steyer. a 9-year-old boy from minnesota running a 5k race took a wrong turn and won a 10k by mistake. during saturday's race cade said

judge to lower bail for the man facing retrial in the ghost ship fire case. derick almena remains in jail. a judge declared a mistrial after a jury deadlocked on the involuntary manslaughter charges against him last month. friday the judge will consider dates for a potential new trial and a motion to reduce almena's bail. jurors acquitted co-defendant max harris for the deadly 2016 oakland fire that killed 36 people. the search is under way for this fugitive child molester. a jury convicted 55-year-old apollo johnson of assaulting a girl more than a decade. he failed to appear in court. now the judge esh you'd an arrest warrant. johnson started molesting the girl when she was 6 years old and didn't tell anyone until she was 16 and had to be admitted to hospital for a panic attack.

peak travel periods around the holidays so around november. reporting live jobina fortson, abc 7 news. bay area members of the sikh community and law enforcement will travel to houston to attend the funeral for a deputy shot and killed on duty. deputy sandeep dhaliwal was killed in a traffic stop friday. he was the first sikh deputy to serve. he was given an exemption to wear his turban while on duty. there was a memorial to honor his life. one man met him in 2017 during hurricane harvey relief efforts. >> he guided us through everything. such a humble guy. >> important to have people who look like the community so when people see the plan is a sikh-american it lets everyone know, hey, he's representing us and we need to make sure we respect that religion. >> a suspect is in custody but the motive is still unknown.
