santa cruz county sheriff's department is trying to figure out what led to the abduction of a man. >> he disappeared around 3:00 a.m. and a body was found hours later along so cal san jose sane road. >> abc more. >> reporter: neighbors are in disbelief. >> this neighborhood is great and it's right on the point where people surf and a pretty busy airy. >> reporter: the 3000 block was blocked off after a home invasion and kidnapping. e sheriffs received a 911

call. >> it's a pretty secluded remote area, so cal san jose road. it kind of parallels highway 17 and it's up near the summit. >> reporter: the santa cruz county sheriff's office say they believe he was forced into a white suv bmw belonging to his girlfriend which left the scene. a deceased body was found nearby but officials say that person has not been identified. >> a lot of moving parts right now. detectives are working tirelessly, they have been since we got that call at 3:00 this morning. >> reporter: sheriff's deputies spent the afternoon securing the second cri to continue their investigation. for now they say it's likely that the 50-year-old kidnapping victim was targeted. anyone with information on the case is aed to call the sheriff's office. >> it's pretty bizarre that a serious crime like this would happen around here.

>> reporter: there's no suspect description available at this time, but the shf's office does not believe there to be any danger to the public. we're live in santa cruz, abcabc 7's chris nguyen. officials admit they received a complaint from a student about an incident before last friday's game and then notified police. that complaint does involve the football team. >> based on our investigation on facebook and social media entries, we base our investigation on the facts, and those are sometimes difficult to determine initially. >> right now gilroy high's football team will keep practicing and playing as scheduled while the investigation takes place. there's a new snag in the

o oakla lanlland a's interest to o the home. that would help propose the new one at the proposed site. the judge blocked the sale of the coliseum property which was announced earlier this move. the move was called illegal. citywe owns the coliseum property and they feel completely blindslided by the lawsuit. they say they are willing to work with all sides. >> we've offered to both entities to purchase out their share, we also offered the city to do more of a joint venture. we're open to a flexible arrangement and make sure this is a project that can be a win for everyone. >> reporter: the oakland mayor is hoping all sides can work together on a plan that does benefit everybody. the a's want to use any money to

help fund their proposed ballpark at howard terminal at jack london square. the judge has scheduled a february 14th hearing but he's allowing them to continue their talks. a san francisco-based lawyer and republican party leader is suing the state of california to allow them. she accuses him of failing to verify those on the polls are allowed to vote. they have failed to collect that the people on the voter rolls are actually u.s. citizens. dylan calls it a nonpartisan civil rights issue. >> we believe it's important that the most popular state in the country get its act together and they're not putting people in peril by mistakenly putting them on the voter rolls and telling them they have a right to vote. >> they claim they're protecting

committed to building a better bay area. we talk about the homeless and mental health issues facing the city. >> today they announced a new vision for mental health care in the hopes it will overhaul the city's current system. >> n b bc . we have mfrm luz pena. >> the two supervisors are moving forward. >> reporter: there are more than 5,000 homeless people in san francisco. the city has identified at least 4,000 who are not only homeless but also have a drug problem and are struggling with mental health. how are we helping those people right now? >> we're helping them right now by trying to get them into treatment. we have a street medicine team that's out there on a regular basis, services, support, mental health stabilization beds and some of the work we're already in process of doing and i don't

want to continue to die vertz resources. >> reporter: on the other hand we have two supervisors who say they want to expand the city's mental health to offer an initiative that will be on the 2020 ballot. >> we'll serve mental health patients who have severe and mental health illness a we'll serve any san franciscan if they're very, very ill and on the verge of crisis. >> reporter: division includes both, cleaning and drug crisis scenes and the office of accountability. that last part is why the mayor does not support this initiative >> i'm not in the business of using taxpayer dollars to subsidize private insurance companies and unfortunately, you know, that is what they're proposing to do. >> reporter: the supervisor says they want to provide help to every san franciscan've phen they already have health insurance. >> right now we can also if

democracy protests started 17 weeks ago. more than 180 people have been arrested in the violent clashes. a texas jury has found former dallas police officer amber guyger guilty of murdering her neighbor. guyger had said she entered the wrong apartment by accident and then shot bo than jean thinking he was an intruder. we're joined live now in new york withhe latest. trevor? >> reporter: good afternoon. this conviction was a relatively quick decision that many legal experts told us was unlike anything they had ever seen, the jury ruling despite the argument that this was done out of fear, confusion, or even self-defense, that amber guyger murdered botham jean. amber guyger once an officer of the dallas police department now convicted of murder. the jury deliberated for six hours, even discussing the

lesser charge of manslaughter before reaching that decision. >> we the jury find the defendant amber guyger guilty of murder. >> reporter: the announcement met with gasps from inside the courtroom, guyger appearing to wipe tears from her face. she admitted she walked into bo than jean's home by mistake thinking it was her home, opening fire. guyger's defense attorneys argue she had been confused and feared for her life. >> i yelled at him, let me see your hands, let me see your hands. >> reporter: and monday used the castle doctrine, which allows you to defend yourself in your own home. but guyger wasn't in her own home. bo than jean was eating ice cream and watching tv. >> reporter: so the sentencing phase is under way.

we heard from botham jean's mother and sister talking about how difficult this loss has been for them. amber guyger faces up to 99 yeayea years in prison. >> how long could the sentencing phase take? >> it could take several days because on top of the family and co-workers talking about the loss of life, they talked about guyger's character. they presented text messages officer that had racial w undertones to them. it's going to continue into the week before before we learn how long amber guyger is going to prison. now to the varsity blues scandal, a san francisco winemaker is hoping to serve a much shorter prison sentence for his part in the college admissions scandal. according to the press democrat, he asked the judge for two months' time. that's much shorter than the 15

a big celebration for jimmy carter. the former president is turning 95, now the first u.s. president to reach that milestone. carter doesn't have any public plans for today but soon he'll be traveling to nashville with his wife rose a lind to help build houses for habitat for humanity. he filled the white house from 1977 to 1981. he became the longest living president in history this past spring. consumer news now, gm really wants to put the brakes on the strike that's going on. >> they're saying they're losing $50 million a day.
