the other end of the extreme. the salary for the boston red sox, almost $230 million. the cubs and the red sox among the highest payrolls this season. neither qualified for the playoffs. by the way, the giants payroll, they shelled out a lot this season. but they were fifth overall. there was quit ts morning a 10:00 in a strip mall in emeryville. a mom ran inside a taco bell restaurant leaving her car running with her four-month-old baby inside. the car was gone when she came back. a person on a scooter jumped into the car and took off. fortunately, the baby was found safe a short distance away. >> child was located in west oakland, 28th street. the person who took the vehicle stopped, dropped the baby off and proceeded on with the

vehicle. >> the child is okay. reunited with its mom. police are looking for the car thief and the vehicle. a gray honda accord with plate 8egl 341. >> a menlo park police officer today took down a potentially violent man without using you'l that was captured by sky 7. >> it all started around noon this afternoon. police were searching for somebody threatening roadway workers with a machete or a knife. around 12:53, the officers were still searching near railroad tracks along bay front expressway. there were about eight police officers, many with their guns drawn. around 12:56 now, officers ghana proechg a homeless encampment. a man is there, but it's not clear if he had the machete or the knife. he appears to be cooking. what happens next, happens quickly. only about a minute later, 12:57. you can see him talking to

officers. he comes out from -- turns his hat backwards. officers back up. that's when the man picks up a branch. one officer throws his gun down and charges towards the man. they scuffle for a few seconds before the officers manage to get that man on the ground. other officers then pile on. this all took less than a minute. by 12:58, officers in on the tackle appear to have gotten cuffs on that man. no word yet on what charges that man will face. interesting to see the officer throw his gun down. we can only assume he didn't want the gun to be taken in a scuffle of some sort. unbelievable video captured by sky 7 today. the bay area native accused of setting fires here while here for his reyawn may have done it before. he lives in kansas city. prosecutors say he lit a company's hay truck on fire for not hiring him. graham is facing charges for

setting several fires in the south bay last month. this time investigators say he blamed being emotional over his wife's death. graham will be in court next month. our efforts to build a better bay area focus on solutions. one solution to traffic. >> this project on highway 101 from petaluma to knnovato is to designed to add carpool lanes. >> wayne freedman joining us with the progress report. wayne? >> reporter: this has been going on for years. you mention this to people, their blood begins to boil because they're frustrated with the traffic and the delays caused by construction. today we had a symbolic event, an earth moving. >> it is notable. when cal trans kicks off a ceremonial start to a highway project in all of places a cul-de-sac. that happened in petaluma

extended rainier avenue, allowing traffic to pass from east to west in petaluma. while environmentalists don't like it, regulars in the deer creek dog park see o progress even though the extended road will pass close to them. >> we really need them. there's only two roads that go over to the other side of the town. >> cal trans optimistically estimates one or two years until completion. after that -- >> when this project is complete, i will retire with about 34 years in the state of california. >> he'll have left his mark in his hometown. >> reporter: it's worth noting that jeffrey chris has added incentive to get this project finished on time if not early. he says everybody in town knows his number. when something goes wrong, they call him even in the middle of the night. reporting live in petaluma, wayne freed man, abc 7. >> wow. wayne, thank you. we're getting a good idea today on how next summer's highway 101 repair project in san francisco will be executed.

the work involves crews replacing a section of the freeway at alemany boulevard. this animation shows how it will be done. traffic from the northbound lanes of 101 will be diverted on to the alemany off ramp. it will take crews 10 to 12 days to demolish and replace the deck. once that' boaffic wi b shifted the new northbound lanes. take another 10 to 12 days to tear down and r lanes. officials are encouraging drivers to start planning ahead. it verss i tmpru california. president trump takes on governor newsom. also, b.a.r.t. listens. how will they respond? how you can get your say. the navigation center. they're all controversial. but not everybody is against them. the one neighborhood that says their center is a success.

padilla said ella peel the judge's ruling. he added the law is to preserve and protect democracy. we're joined by jackie spear. a lot to talk about. thanks for coming in. >> sure. good to be with you. >> let's start with the news of the day and obviously the president is irritated with the leadership in the state of california. what does this mean as we go forward given what seems like the ever-present threat of federal funds being withheld from a variety of projects? >> there's a pattern with the abuse that the president levels against california. withholding gas tax money now,g we should have dirtier air because he doesn't want to have a california-only car. in erms it of auto emissions. now the most recent one about our homelessness here in san francisco. part of it is to try and poke at gavin newsom, our governor, the speaker of the house, nancy

pelosi. the chair of the intelligence committee, adam schiff. so it's all designed with a purpose in mind. it's very unpresidential. it violates lots of laws that you are supposed to be providing equal protection under the laws and here, clearly, he's trying to take out -- take it out on californians. we're a blue state. we didn't vote for donald trump for president, so we're fair game in his way of looking at life. >> let's talk about the impeachment inquiry because we're in kind of uncharted territory here. how do you think this plays out? >> i don't know how it plays out. we need to go where the facts lead us. i think it's very important for us that serve on the intelligence committee to look at this in the cold light of day to be very focused on it. this is a very sober moment and what ist take it as such. eing charged by

this whistle-blower is really fundamentally against every principle that we hold in this country. it violates the federal elections code, it violates the abuse of power component of impeachment which is one of the bases on which you -- it shows that the president is willing to betray the constitution and his oath of office for political gain. >> so let me ask you this. if the evidence becomes overwhelming, do you think that we might see a nixonesque type scenario where other members of the republican party look at the situation and say, all right, this is untenable and we can no longer support this president and then there's an unraveling that would take place heading into the 2020 elections? >> there hasn't been a lot of profiles in courage on the republican side. they're looking at polling. if the polling starts to show they're going to lose their own elections, you might see them step forward. i think what we have here is

much like the nixon administration, there's a criminal enterprise under way in hae w our ouse. country. we've got to protect our national security and we've got to follow the constitution. >> one more item i want to get to. bernie sanders canceled campaign event, was treated for a heart ailment. had two stents put in. his campaign temporarily on hold. how do you think this will play itself out in terms of his health in the long run for the 2020 campaign and will his age and health become more of an issue going forward? >> i don't think it will become an issue. because he's pretty vigorous on the campaign trail. the stents are fairly common now with older patients and patients respond very well to them and move on with their lives. i don't know that this will be the factor that would somehow

sideline him in a campaign. >> a temporary setback. and you expect he would be back on the campaign trail relatively soon? >> i think we can expect that. >> congresswoman spear, thanks for coming in. >> thank you. all right. let's turn our attention to the weather. starting to feel more warmth out there. spencer christian is here with the latest. >> you're right. wa right now. we had nice autumn cooldown. the 24-hour temperature change begins to tell the story. we can see that it's several degrees warmer in most locations right now than at this time yesterday. 7 degrees warmer in novato and livermore. the warming trend is under way. here's a live view from sutro tower under sunny skies. 63 degrees in the city right now. 72 in oakland. redwood city 74. 75. gilroy 79. 62 at half moon bay. the view from aerial looking at clear western skies.

76 in santa rosa right now. napa 74. 82 at fairfield. the city and parts of the coastline as well. news of the coastline, a few patchy low clouds overnight. it will be mainly clear. warmer pattern begins on friday. the warming will continue through the weekend. overnight, again, maybe a patch or two of low clouds near the cast. but generally clear skies. overnight lows range from upper 40s to low 50s generally. up in the north bay valleys, cooler there with some locations dropping into the low to mid-40s. through the overnight hours, you can see that fog, low clouds actually approaching the coastline. not really making much of a move on shore. so we'll keep the forecast mainly clear overnight. there's a look at highs tomorrow under sunny skies in the south bay. mild conditions, mainly mid to upper 70s. about 75 at san jose. 77 at morgan hill.

on the peninsula, low 70s from redwood city to mountain view. 65 will be the high downtown san francisco tomorrow. up in the north bay, mainly mid-70s. 76 in santa rosa. 75 in sonoma. east bay highs, similar to the peninsula. low 70s in most locations. 72 at union city and the inland east bay, highs in the mid to upper 70s. as we look ahead, i mentioned the warming will continue. friday, temperatures beginning to ease up a bit. then a bigger jump on saturday. mid to upper 80s inland. and sunday, we're likely to s several inland locateeions topg out at about 90 degrees. perhaps a degree or two higher than that. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. you can see sunday looks like it may be the warmest day, certainly, inland around the bay area. may be just as warm on monday. maybe down by a couple degrees. we'll call it a steady pattern. little bit cooler on tuesday and wednesday as temperatures start

discomfort during a las vegas campaign event. following medical tests, he was found to have a blocked artery. >> can i ask you a few questions? >> sanders is hospitalized in las vegas and had two stents successfully inserted. he's said to be in good spirits. but the campaign has indefinitely canceled all events and appearances. this health scare foreshadowed by an appearance on dr. oz where sanders said he was fortunate to be very healthy but running for president made it difficult to eat and sleep well. >> so a campaign trail is really not conducive to good health habits. >> he's 78 years old. if elected, he would be the oldest person to become preident. wednesday, he received an outpouring of support from other candidates wishing him a speedy recovery. the latest abc news "washington post" poll has sanders with 19% support among democratic leaning voters behind only joe biden and essentially tied with elizabeth

campaign trail, he's still campaigning, guys? >> trevor ault, live in new york. thank you. world war ii plane at a t seven connecticut airport. the b-17 bomber crashed into an airport deicing facility while trying to land at bradley international airport north of hartford. ten passengers and three crew members were on the plane. this same plane ran off the runway during an air show near pittsburgh, pennsylvania, in 1987. three people were injured in that crash. the plane that crashed is owned by the cullings foundation. around the country for aviation events. wayne freed man got to check out the same plane in to 10. wayne was there -- got to ride in a b-17 along with his son.

the foundation put out a statement saying they're cooperating with the investigation and their thoughts and prayers with with the crash victims. a new round of talks between the u.s. and north korea still on despite another apparent missile launch by the north. south korea's military says the north fired at least one projectile off the eastern coast. the reported launch came after the u.s. state department talked -- negotiations have been at a standstill for months following the collapse of a february summit between north korean leader kim jong-un and president trump. u.s. air force says an overnight missile launch from vandenberg air force base was pre-planned and not a response to the military action. the unarmed minute man three intercontinental ballistic missile lifted off after 1:00 this morning, traveling 4200 miles over the pacific ocean to the marshall islands. vandenberg is 29

no thank you. try my really big chicken sandwich combos. starting at $4.99. today judges in philadelphia have rulings that has implication this is san francisco. a judge ruled a planned safe injection site in the city could go forward. the judge is saying the site does not violate federal drug laws despite the lawsuit from the justice department. san francisco mayor london breed has been an advocate for safe injection sites. she says today's ruling is, quote, a big deal. though there are still hurdles. >> i'm hoping that if this opens the door for us that we can really move forward sooner rather than later. this gives us hope. >> state lawmakers put a bill on hold that would allow san francisco to open safe injection sites. the bill's authors, senator scott wiener of san francisco and an assembly woman from stockton are committed to getting that bill passed in 2020. abc 7 news is committed to

building a better bay area. that means taking a closer look at some controversial issues. building a new navigation center for the homeless along the embarcadero has been met with a lot of protests from neighbors who tried to stop it from going up. there are five centers in san francisco with two more on the way. the dog patch neighborhood to the east of potrero hill have called their center a good neighbor. abc 7 news reporterlyi l report den ez to tell us more. >> let me tell you, it wasn't a match made in heaven. it opened in may in 2017. at first people in the neighborhood were apprehensive with that change. the central waterfront navigation center quietly nestled in an area in the dog patch neighborhood on the east because it's isolated, some don't know it's there. the owner of the mini food truck parks her vehicle two blocks away and is there five days a week. i had to explain to her what it

was. >> homeless. >> no. >> local businesses don't seem to bother it either by the existence of the center. >> they're not a problem. >> why has this navigation center been successful? be fair. it's a distance from homes. unlike the center opening along the embarcadero. also the smallest with under 60 beds. the embarcadero one will have 200. the central waterfront one is operated by episcopal services which has experiences with shelters in the city. the people who live at the center can come and go as they please but are made aware that they, too, are members of this community. >> this community has been an incredible example of what we can accomplish. >> just as important is the relationship between the center and neighbors. >> it takes our staff working hand in hand with leadership in
