police believe it was an accident, but a terrifying one. >> fast footwork too. this morning we're hearing new details about two frightening close calls east of tampa. >> they involved a small plane and then a sheriff's helicopter. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> reporter: these two pilots literally fell from the florida sky and are alive to tell about it. this is the moment when the u.s. coast guard came to help and pued tm m mdy field in ft. meade east of tampa. one of them was flying a polk county sheriff's office helicopter. the other was flying this, a much smaller aircraft, a gyroplane. both aircraft are badly damaged. authorities are describing what happened as two separate hard landings.and s there called for

help. >> we have aisual on the pilot, and he looks --waving. >> witnesses say the sheriff's helicopter was above the scene an hour later when it went down as well. >> hey, we have mine guys telling us they have witnessed the chopper go down and it has crashed. >> reporter: one of them as he was being rescued was holding his leg in a great deal of pain. federal authorities are investigating both hard landings. it's an extremely rural and wet area, so their work won't be easy. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. >> our thanks to steve. also in florida, a birthday surprise turned deadly in the pensacola area. >> this is a wild story. a man shot and killed his son-in-law, who jumped out of the bushes to surprise him for his birthday. christopher bergen traveled from his home in norway to surprise richard dennis. police say dennis was totally startled and mistook bergen for a relative he'd argued with earlier. the sheriff is calling this a horrible accident. >> he turns on the back porch light, he steps out. mr. bergen jumps out of the shadows, scaring mr. dennis. mr. dennis gets off one round, striking mr. bergen, killing him

instantly. so our investigation has revealed that this was totally accidental. it was a really sad occurrence. and that no charges are warranted in this case. >> unbelievable story. the sheriff is asking people to pray for the family. also in florida, a high school football coach has been suspended for six weeks after helping a student who had nowhere to stay. >> state officials say robert weiner violated a rule preventing coaches from making living arrangements for players. weiner says the student moved from out of state and his guardian could no longer care for him. he plans to appeal the ban next week. just trying to help him out. coming up, the cherry on top of one couple's dream wedding. he's best known as sir rod stewart.

attorney is accusing the justice department of trying to stop him from obtaining the president's tax records after the department tried to block a subpoena into trump's finances. breaking overnight, one person is dead and two injured after a gunman opened fire at a senior living apartment complex in vancouver, washington. that gunman lives in the building. he's now in police custody. he turned himself in after barricading himself inside the apartment for at least two hours. some residents were evacuated while others were told to shelter in place. there's no word yet on a possible motive. health officials are blaming 19 deaths in 16 states on the vaping epidemic and they say there is no sign of the outbreak slowing down. the cdc also confirms 1,080 vaping-related illnesses nationwide, up 200 from a week ago. a wisconsin teen who says he thought vaping was safer than smoking cigarettes ended up in the hospital hooked up to a ventilator and he has a message to vapors and potential users. >> if you don't smoke or vape now, please don't start. if you do, i urge you to stop

and get some help immediately. while quitting might seem really difficult, going through this is far worse. >> today the state of new york was set to begin enforcing a 90-day emergency ban on the sale of most flavored electronic cigarettes, but a vaping industry group that's suing the state has succeeded in convincing an appellate court to issue a temporary hold on enforcing that ban. a virginia doctor who illegally prescribed more than 500,000 doses of opioids has been sentenced to 40 years in prison. prosecutors say dr. joel smithers earned upwards of $700,000 from patients for those prescriptions including fentanyl and oxycodone. now to an update of candidate bernie sanders, doing well after emergency surgery for an artery blockage. the hospital is known for its cardiac care and rehab center. sanders' wife says doctors are pleased with his progress. >> he's doing great.
