he loss of my sister. my nephews will join me for the very first time. bay area from abc7. >> just hours ago, a red flag warning went into effect for parts of the north bay hills. residents taking precaution. good evening, i'm eric thomas. thanks for joining us. let's get to meteorologist drew tuma with more. >> that red flag warning did go into effect at 8:00 earlier this evening. it will last through much of the morning tomorrow it. >> does affect the north bay hills. what we're watching very closely are winds out of the northeast gusting close to 35 miles per hour combined with low hupdty. that means fires can easily start and easily spread. middletown over to cloverdale

south into forest knowles. knowl so future weather, watch the winds ramp up early by 2:00 a.m. that continues into 8:00. but later in the morning the winds will calm down. however, it will be a very warm afternoon across the entire bay area. a look at the afternoon highs coming up in just a few minutes. let's go to n reporter on how people are taking precautions during these red flag conditions. >> reporter: eric, four extra firefighters are working out of this station overnight. in the county a special strike team has been formed all because of the red flag warning. >> we don't have like a knife, do we? >> reporter: these campers are on a mission. >> bless you. >> ruz a red flag warning is forcing them to put their fires out soon. >> right now basically for the next three hours we are going to do a bit of a cooking marathon,

make dinner and make breakfast. so basically just get everything done. >> it kind of sucks that we can't have a camp fire and we have to make like all of our food now. >> better than nothing. >> reporter: the high wind at higher altits the reason for the warning which also forced the closure of several roads. marin county fire has upped staffing as well. >> this time of year in october we do see our highest risk of fires with rapid growth in the north bay, especially the coastal area dual to the fuel moisture being at its lowest point. >> reporter: those in the east bay were still on high alert because of the warm weather. gwen court before noon was threatened. >> some of the fence lines, our fire engines actually stopped the fire from progressing past the fence lines. >> reporter: dozens turned out to clear brush that could ignite

earthquake hit this morning off the coast of pacifica. luckily there were no reports of damage, but it is a wake-up call for all of us to be ready for the next big one. >> reporter: that's what the 3.5 quake sounded like at 8:41 saturday morning. it really freaked out the folks living in this house. >> did you feel it? >> i felt it. >> i thought someone hit my store with the truck. >> reporter: tiny wires on the shelves prevented lots of booze from smashing onto the floor. >> no daniemage. >> reporter: the quake was centered a mile off the coast of pacifica. >> i believe this has had three tiny aftershocks already. >> reporter: this seismologist says the shaking happened between the two major faults. she does not believe it's a foreshock of something bigger. >> the best analogy for it is to

think about it pulling up on a blanket. most of it moves the direction you want but all around i you get all these tiny little wrinkles. >> reporter: more than 3,000 people between san francisco, the peninsula, and parts of the east bay reported they felt it on the usgs website. minutes after the break, train service was halted to inspect the tracks but didn't find any damage. >> to me it was like a rgggggg, but it shook the windows. >> reporter: jim and elaine definitely felt it. >> here's the extra batteries. >> reporter: elaine and jim lived through the 6.9 loma prieta quake 30 years ago. >> it was so hard and just so long. >> reporter: they know being prepared for the next big one is the only option. in pacifica, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> and as you take a look at the shaking intensity map, you can

see the strongest in terms of what was felt across the bay area in san francisco and other parts of san mateo county, that magnitude 3.5 earlier this morning. as we widen out the picture, you can see thousands of people in the bay area felt this earthquake early in the morning. >> it was very weak. the shaking intensity was felt in the north bay and as far south as morgan hill. so just a reminder we do feel those light earthquakes across the entire region. if you need to pack an earthquake kit, we have a list of what you should include on our website. go to abc7news.com. a body was found this morning during a search for a woman who went missing off the waters of san francisco breach. the body still needs to be identified. crews have suspended the search for the woman. investigators say the 24-year-old was with friends at mile rock beach near lands end

last night when she went out for a swim and was swept up by strong currents. a woman in dublin says she was sexually assaulted while she slept in her homes. police arrested jatonio simmons. she told police she woke up when a man began touching her. she screamed and ran out of the office. he faces charges of sexual assault and burglary. firefighters were investigating a small fire that broke out this afternoon in san jose. the fire started just after 2:00 at san jose boiler works. that's oakland road. fire officials say nobody was injured and the choir was quickly put out. the cause of that fire is under investigation. next new well, new season, new roster. the dubs played their first game at chase center in san francisco. you can see even city hall went up in warriors colors to celebrate. the war yoz faced off against the l.a. lakers and suffered a

breaki . at least four people have been injured including two firefighters in anxplosion during an oktoberfest celebration tonight in huntington beach. the injuries though are said to be minor. witnesses reported hearing multiple blasts and seeing a large fireball. it happened near a restaurant, and the flames spread to tents that have been set up for the festival. investigators say the explosion came from an electrical vault. blue grass wrapped up at san francisco's golden gate park. there are some noticeable differences. extra fencing has been put up. and in order to get in visitors have to go through one of four security checkpoints. restrictions are also in place as to what can be brought in. all the changes are in response to the attack earlier this year

break from the grind for everyone. big marvin day fan here. all right. time to check the forecast. >> eric, we are tracking warmer weather to finish out the weekend. widespread 80s by tomorrow afternoon. so a lot of heat is making a comeback. live doppler 7 showing you the sweep. outside tonight the camera showing you clear skies. you can see sutro tower blinking all the way in the background. so not only do we have clear skies tonight. that means we have a lot of sunshine on the way for your day tomorrow. but in the short term in the accuweather highlights, tonight we are tracking that elevated fire danger in the north bay hills with that red flag warning continuing overnight until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning for those gusty winds over the next 12 hours or so. those winds will also bring us a warm to hot afternoon. and by tuesday we will track cooler, more october-like weather. it's still 67 in the city.

we are at 52 though in santa rosa. checking out the temperature right around 61 degrees. a current look at our winds especially in our hills where we do have that red flag warning. knoxville greek gusting at 28 miles per hour right now. future weather showing you 2:30 in the morning. you can see our winds are most active in the north bay. we are tracking gusts that could come close to 35 miles per hour, continues once sun is up here at about 7:30 t morning. then those winds will really calm down midday. and they will stay that way for the rest of the afternoon and evening tomorrow. overnight tonight we are tracking temperatures, upper 40s to low to mid-50s in the next 12 hours. clear skies and again it does turn windy in the hills in the north bay. the 12-hour day planner at 7:10 in the morning. that sun really going to warm us up pretty quickly. so by noon we are already into the low 80s and then autumn heat by 4:00 with our warmest spots

topping out in the low 90s. starting in the south bay, 87 in san jose tomorrow. 92 though for gilroy. along the peninsula, it is a warm day, a lot of sunshine, gets us to 86 in menlo park. the coast line warm in the upper 70s if not close to 80 degrees. 83 tomorrow afternoon. the north bay it is warm to hot in 91 in santa rosa. 88 in sonoma up to about 85 degrees. it is warm well into the 80s above average for this time of year, a lot of sunshine. 84 berkeley, 83 in oakland, 85 in fremont. then inland upper 80s to lower 90s. 88 in walnut creek and pleasanton up to 89 degrees. here's that autumn warmth tomorrow, still warm for monday. and then the fog returns on tuesday and our numbers begin to

ohio. a man is in custody accused of killing four sleeping homeless men in new york city. police say the suspect 24-year-old randy rodriguez santos was also homeless. attacks happened around 2 this morning in china town. police say he beat them to death with a metal pipe. a fifth man was also attacked and is in critical condition. >> a random attack, no one was targeted by race, age, anything of that nature. >> santos' family says he has struggled with drug and violence. police say he's been arrested at least a half dozen other times over the past two years. three of those arrests were for assault. new developments out of texas where a witness in the murder trial of a dallas police officer has been killed in a shooting. joshua brown was the former neighbor of botham jean. jean was shot and killed in his own apartment by officer amber guyger. brown was killed last night. no arrests have been made. he lived across the hall and was

screenings of joker. this man was struck by lightning while walking his three dogs. he was walking his dogs at a park in spring texas when lightning struck at his feet. his frightened dogs ran off and alex fell to the ground unconscious. employees from a nearby vet hospital saw what happened and rushed outside finding alex not moving, not breathing and his clothes charred. >> i started running through the hospital because someone was like we need help with cpr. his shoes and his socks got blown off his feet. >> they performed cpr until they could feel a pulse. he was then air-lifted to the hospital where he is recovering. this video you just need to see. it was taken this morning at a hair salon on long island in new york. now watch what comes crashing through the window. yes, that is a deer. oh, my gosh, it is a deer. it actually hit a woman sitting on the couch and nearly crashed

in the north bay repairs are going to begin this weekend on a highway damaged by flooding. this is from last winter when highway 37 flooded in marin county. s had been swamped several times in recent years near construction will be taking place every night through november 4th. this will lead to closures between atherton avenue and highway 101. thousands of safeway workers have a new contract tonight. the union ratified a three-year deal on from. >> that provides a wage increase and guaranteed benefits. it covers 14,000 employees. those markets are in northern, central, and southern california. a new kind of advertising is making its nationwide debut at a bay area airport. the first all-digital airport program is rolling out at mineta
