i'm liz kreutz. following the american fire. how neighbors came together to help firefighters put out the flames and save their homes. >> we're watching our winds very closely because they will be ramping upstarting on wednesday and this will prompt a fire width weather watch for higher fire danger. we'll have the latest details in the accuweather forecast. >> i'm luz pena in san francisco. it's fleet week. the ships have arrived and our military is getting ready for multiple events throughout the week. abc7 news starts right now. >> announcer: now news to build a better bay area from abc7. >> tonight firefighters are still working to extinguish a brush fire burning in napa county, the so-called american fire has burned more than 500 acres. it prompted an evacuation advisory and some neighbors rushed to keep their homes safe.

good evening. i'm eric thomas. dion is off tonight. abc7 news reporter liz kreutz is live near american canyon with the latest on this fire. liz? >> reporter: eric, the fire is burning in the hills behind us. it's 30% contained. there are crews here that are going to be working through the night. the good news, the evacuation advisory has been lifted, but we spoke to many people who live in this area and for them it was still a very close call. from the ground and from the air, firefighters work to put out the fast-moving american fire. >> we have several water tenders, dozers, two helicopters and at one time there was up to five fixed-wing air tankers. >> reporter: the fire started around 3:00 p.m. i quickly grew in size with winds blowing famz toward american canyon. what are some of the challenges today in battling this fire? >> access. mostly steep terrain, hill -- steep hills and canyons.

>> reporter: the vintage ranch community was put under evacuation advisory. meaning residents needed to be ready to leave at any time. neighbors reggie and jonathan oh said at one point flames were so close they started to run. >> we started to run and we told everybody we need to go. >> yeah. >> in 30 seconds. >> it's scary. my wife, my kids, my mother-in-law. i tell, go to the car. >> reporter: the fire started up in the hills and spread rapidly down to here. you can see how close those flames got to these homes. in some places, they got even further. >> this was he will where most of the damage happened here. >> reporter: he took us to his backyard and showed us how flames ignited by blowing embers came right up to his fence. you were hosing this down? >> i was hosing it down. >> reporter: they grabbed their hoses to try to put out the flames. he shared with us his facebook live which showed firefighters simultaneously assisting with air drops. >> they were handling fire down there. we handled this part here.

>> reporter: a joint effort and ultimately a successful one. >> the firefighters were thankful to us, we were thankful to them. things, you know -- it all happened good for the end. >> reporter: and those neighbors say they know they live behind a grassy field so they've come together to talk about what they would do if something like this were to happen. today it did so it just shows you it is good to have a plan. now, there was a red-flag warning in effect in this area this weekend, but it ended at noon today. again, just over 500 acres burned at this point. about 526 acres, 30% contained. these crews will be working through tonight and into tomorrow. live in american canyon, liz kreutz, abc7 news. >> i'm meteorologist drew tuma. our fire danger will once again be on the rise mid week this upcoming week as winds will turn very gusty once again in our hills. in fact, these winds will likely be stronger than we saw over the weekend. so we have a fire weather watch. this will go into effect early wednesday morning and

encompasses not only the north bay mountains. this also details the east bay hills as well. we could find winds gusting out of the north, northeast close to 45 miles per hour combined. not low humidity. fires can start and easily spread. communities affected under the fire weather watch, you can see elevations above 1,000 feet. we'll take a much closer look at how strong those winds will get specifically and when that fire danger will lessen in our accuweather forecast in a few minutes. >> all right, drew, thank you. now to a day of resilience and healing in santa rosa. many survivors of the tubs wildfire are still rebuilding their lives, but today they took time to reflect back. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard spent the day in santa rosa where survivors gathered to commemorate the fire's second anniversary. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: there was music and lots of food and drink all to celebrate what could be the most resilient community in america. >> we ran downstairs, opened our

front door to total chaos. >> reporter: may says she'll never forget that terrible night. >> we lost everything, everything, everything was gone. >> it's just been a hell of a roller coaster. two years. >> reporter: steve rahmn and his family survived the firestorm, but his home in coffee park was destroyed. this was steve's house before the fire and this is his new home which should finally be completed by year's end. >> this was more -- not as much of a celebration. i think two years now, there is more of a celebration, more of a lot more hope than there was before. >> reporter: more than 5,000 homes lost, but hundreds are being rebuilt. neighbors from coffey park, mark west springs, and larkfield were all here. >> we all know what we've been through, and that's -- wet need a hug every once in a while. >> please join me in a moment of silence real quickly. >> reporter: a time to remember 24 victims from sonoma county who lost their lives. their names are now part of a memorial outside the luther

burbank center for the artsz. >> there are those out there who do not feel sonoma strong. they still feel the frustration of that night. they haven't gotten anywhere. >> reporter: lisa frazee and others are still battling with their insurance companies over monthly living expenses which are set to expire this week. >> our community is going to be devastated when these additional living expenses stop getting paid. people cannot afford to pay rent and their mortgage on their burnt property. the homeowners insurance on the burned problem and rebuild. >> reporter: california's insurance commissioner is getting involved asking insurance companies to consider extending those living expenses beyond tuesday, the two-year anniversary of the fire. in santa rosa, cornell ber in other words, abc7 news. cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> the power is back on for 10,000 pg&e customers following an emergency shut off in the sierra foothills. pg&e began turning off their power as a precaution to prevent wildfires.

outages affected customers in parts of butte, and yuba counties. you can stay on top of the weatherer and any update from pg&e with the news app. it's free to download in the app store. just enable push notifications. new developments. three arrests are made in connection with a shooting that sent three teens to the hospital following a high school football game. the shooting happened friday night on september 27th after a game at de anza high in richmond. teens were walking on morning side drive when shots were fired. police have recovered a gun they believe was used in the shooting. two of the victims have been released from the hospital. the three people arrested were also under age. well, fleet week is officially underway in san francisco. it will be packed with multiple free events and activities that will include touring ships and, of course, watching the blue angels. all of which came into town today. abc7 news reporter luz pena is live in san francisco with a look at all the excitement. luz? >> reporter: eric, there is

something special about walking around san francisco and seeing face to face those men and women who are serving our country with so much joy and pride. now, up to 1 million people are expected to attend fleet week. our navy, marines and coast guard have arrived. it's fleet week. >> we're just here to kind of give back. >> reporter: we caught up with sailor ryan pen rose. this is his first time in san francisco. he'll be volunteering throughout the week helping out local food banks and, of course, sight-seeing a bit. >> i want to go to alcatraz. that sounds fun. he told me about it. we passed by it. we got a really good up close view. it looks nice. the bridges were beautiful. >> reporter: others who traveled to the bay area are the parents of service members. >> i couldn't be more proud to have my son actually be in the marine corps just like me, you know. and then have my youngest son also. he's going to be a commission officer. we both couldn't be prouder. >> reporter: after waiting for more than three hours, this happened. a military convoy escorted by

a sacramento uber driver is in a coma after having a heart

attack after he was attacked by a passenger with a knife. police say 41-year-old joseph mcvay fended off the rider. after he gave a statement to police, he had a heart attack. to make matters worse, the car he was driving was being rented from uber, they were charged for the car impounded by police for evidence. >> if they can't do anything to keep them safe, at least if something does happen to them, they need to have some financial protection for them. >> uber released a statement saying they are doing what they can to support the family. meantime his wife and two daughters hope he will pull through. police have arrested the suspected attacker. developing news in southern california, a restaurant owner is being called a hero after an electrical transformer in an underground vault exploded during an oktoberfest celebration. cell phone video captured one of the blasts. >> whoa! holy [ bleep ].

>> last night's explosions injured two firefighters and three restaurant employees in the huntington beach. firefighters say the restaurant owner had evacuated the restaurant's dining area about 40 minutes before the blast after noticing a suspicious smell. firefighters were called to check it out. >> there was like a ball of flame that came up and we thought it was like maybe part of the show. but then there was another one. >> they did not have any contact with the vault at all. they were just approaching the area when all of a sudden the first explosion happened. >> the restaurant owner was severely burned. the local utilit southern california edison is working to find out what caused the explosions. abc7 news was in san francisco to check out the store front where gumps will be making a comeback even if it's only temporary. starting tomorrow the new owners will open a pop-up gump store at 250 post street in union square one block away from where the

near term tomorrow we're tracking another warm and sunny day on the way tomorrow. very similar temperature wise to where we were earlier today. but also tomorrow it's another spare the air day in effect. then all eyes turn to wednesday night into thursday morning where we track those winds turning active in our hills, prompting that fire weather watch. overnight tonight we'll see partly cloudy skies. temperatures in the upper 40s to upper 50s. those will be your starting temperatures out the door tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon it's a bright day. it's a warm day. 82 in oakland. tomorrow 87 in san jose. so above average for this time of year. 78 in the city tomorrow, 90 in santa rosa. 90 in concord and antioch, up to 89 degrees. air quality tomorrow, the poorest air quality prompting that spare the air day will be found in the inland east bay and the santa clara valley. however, closer to the coast line we will find better air quality. along the coast, good air quality forecasted tomorrow. so if you have respiratory issues, you want to take it easy tomorrow in spots as the air quality will be on the decline.

contained. the fire started around 3:00 this afternoon and had neighbors in the american canyon area ready to run. evacuation advisories in place earlier have been lifted. three juveniles have been arrested in connection with a shooting that sent three teens to the hospital after a high school football game. the shooting happened on september 27th after a game outside of de anza high in richmond. two of the victims have been released from the hospital. and fleet week is officially underway in san francisco. the blue angels flew into town today. starting tomorrow there will be plenty of free activities including tours of navy and coast guard ships, navy band concerts, up to a million people are expected to attend fleet week. the white house is responding tonight to the news that abc7 broke th broke this m there is presidential wrongdoing. telling abc news no matter how many whistle-blowers come forward, it doesn't change the fact that the president, quote, hasn't done anything wrong. here's abc's rachel scott with

details. >> reporter: abc news has learned the team representing the whistle-blower is representing a second whistle-blower. >> reporter: telling us that second person is described as an intelligence official with firsthand information of some of the allegations outlined in the first whistle-blower complaint. >> we are tremendously dependent on people of courage stepping forward. >> reporter: it was the first whistle-blower's complaint that triggered the impeachment investigation that alleged president trump abused his power by repeatedly urging the leader of ukraine on a phone call to investigate his potential 2020 rival joe biden and his son. just last week, the president also called on china to investigate the bidens. >> you really think he was serious about thinking that china is going to investigate the biden family? >> he said it right there in public. no, do you think it's appropriate? >> because i don't think that's what he did. >> reporter: republican senator susan collins joining a small group of republicans publicly condemning the president,

friday night outside an pafrmt complex in dallas. only a silver sedan was seen speeding away from the scene. brown's testimony helped convict amber geyger in the sheeting death of botham jean. gyger said she told jean to put his hands up after breaking into what she believed was her own apartment. brown said he never heard it. >> do you recall ever hearing someone say, hey, put your hands up, in a loud tone? >> no. no, ma'am. >> brown's family says he was a reluctant witness. the family's lawyer said his death may be connectd to his testimony. >> he was shot and left to die by someone who clearly had an axe to grind. it is important that we answer who that person is. >> tonight activists are calling for justice and offering a $100,000 reward. former president jimmy carter isn't letting a fall slow him down. carter, who turned 95 on tuesday. fell at his georgia home this morning. a spokesperson says he got a black eye and 14 stitches. but tonight carter and his wife

attended a ceremony in tennessee to kickoff a habitat for humanity home building project. carter is the longest-lived u.s. president. the supreme court's next term gets underway this week and they are tackling some big issues immediately. cases this term involve president trump's executive power over immigration, gun rights, abortion regulations, and lgbtq workplace discrimination. arguments in that case will be heard on tuesday. the court itself could also be front and center as we head into an election year. it currently has a 5-4 conservative majority and there's often retirement speculation surrounding 86-year-old justice ruth bader ginsburg. developing news, another horse died this weekend at santa anita park in southern california. it died of a suspected heart attack following a jog on the training track. he last raced at golden gate fields in berkeley. this is now the 33rd horse death at santa anita since december.

races resumed today. the deaths have prompted protests. the parka announced rule changes including banning race-day medications. the world of comedy is mourning rick taylor known for throwing confetti. tv audiences may remember taylor for his appearances on a variety of game shows including hollywood squares and the gong show. taylor appeared more than 2000 times as a guest on the game show mostly in the 70s. he played in wayne's world two and taylor provided "the voice" for elroy in the jet suns during the 1960s. he died in beverley hills today. jeopardy's alex trebek is opening up about his second round of chemo in his fight against cancer. the long-time host revealed his stage 4 pancreatic cancer in march. in may he appeared to be in remission, but now the 79-year-old is undergoing a second round. he says he's determined to fight, but he's realistic about his odds and has come to terms with the possibility of dying. >> you're not afraid of dying?
