in parts of marin and orinda if the weather doesn't change. >> people's entire lives are about to be disrupted maybe for a day, maybe up to five days. think about what that means for businesses, schools, even something as usually reliable as plugging your phone in to get a charge. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live in orinda this morning. amy? >> reporter: hi, good morning. one thing people can do, reggie, fill up that gas tank. gas stations like this one here in orinda will be shut down without electricity, without a generator. these pumps won't be working. pg&e has alerted the cities of lafayette, orinda and moraga the power will be turned off as a preventative measure. the utility is worried old equipment could fall over during the wind that is expected and could start a fire. this could impact about 120,000 customers in contra costa county. fire officials say people need

to prepare now. >> got to make sure they have a plan to charge their phones, to get them through two, three, four, five days. they can do that with backup batteries. they can go to community centers that pg&e will set up around the county. >> reporter: fire departments have been getting ready for this possibility along with county and city officials and school districts. they say you should make sure you have signed up for alerts from your local agencies. pg&e has not said how long the power will be shut off. they're saying at least through thursday afternoon is theld ta several days before they can get the power turned back on. so go ahead and take today to get ready. live in orinda, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> that is a big deal. amy, thank you. bay area school districts say they have plans in place to deal with a power shutdown am oakland unified has sent out a warning ten of their schools

could lose power this week. the district says any affected schools will close for the day. plans are in place for robo calls and online notifications for students and parents. other school districts have similar plans in place. b.a.r.t. says any pg&e power shutoff should not affect service. its trains will continue to operate because they don't rely on pg&e for power. station escalators, ticket vending machines and lighting do rely on pg&e for power but the transit agency enhanced its backup power supply. pg&e says the best way to find out if your power is going to go out is to monitor its outage website. dan ashley shows us how it works. >> reporter: pg&e's website allows you to view areas that have their power shut off. start by going to pg&e.com. then you choose public safety power shutoff on the right side as you can see.

choose, find out if your service may be impacted. it will take you to the power outage maps. scroll down to find out if your service is affected. if you scroll down further there is a second map that will show you the areas that could have the power turned off. you can then zoom in on the map to get a closer view right down to the neighborhoods affected. abc 7 news has put together tips about preparing for power outages where you live, and so here are a few. store plenty of fresh batteries and flashlights and radios. keep a stash of emergency cash on hand. most atms and credit card readers won't work if the power is out. disconnect your computer and use a surge protector. and learn to operate your garage door without electricity. we have a list of resources to help you prepare and s informed. you will find a way to sign up for power outage alerts from pg&e.

danger is getting closer, getting more likely. it will start through noon thursday for just about all those areas. it is for all those areas you see in red. what's not in it right now is solano, mendocino and lake counties. you are still in a fire weather watch and you'll be upgraded to a red flag warning later on today. let's talk temperatures. it's 45 in half moon bay. dress warmer this morning in menlo park. mid to upper 50s across the rest of the peninsula where it's mainly clear but we do have clouds developing along the coast as the sea breeze is starting to gear up as we talked about. 4 in palo alto. we have low to mid-50s through the inland and east bay neighborhoods until you get to antioch. 48 right now in santa rosa and napa at 51. 59 in oakland. a look from south beach. you can see it's very quiet. you can even see somers e. no dri wll he cud the coast mass transit will be good.

just dress warmer and light again. the breezes out on the bay. the north bay 50 at 7:00. high clouds hit us by 11:00 and they'll keep that along with the sea breeze. our temperatures in the upper 70s to near 80s. 66 at 7:00. for the east bay we'll start to see some clouds roll in. maybe a few low clouds this morning at 57. then high clouds and sunshine and mid-70s this afternoon. down to a cool 64 at 7:00. and san francisco, the 80s are gone. barely a few 70s. most of us in the mid to upper 60s under increasing high clouds. so it's not going to be as bright today but the air is going to be cleaner. not a spare the air day. more on the fire danger coming up first. turn it over to frances and how is the commute? >> not too bad. it might be difficult so keep that in mind. a live shot of 101 in san rafael where we just had a new crash reported.

you can see it in the left lane, a car hit a deer, and i think traffic will back up but they will try to clear it from the left lanes because apparently the car hit the deer, they can't move the car at this point. they'll probably run a traffic break to clear it to the right-hand side. we're having trouble in the north bay in novato. there's some road work going on. completely shut down. it should be picked up by 5:00 this morning but keep that in mind. you will see a detour in place. a live shot where we're seeing lots of traffic as well. there is road work

some areas north and east of us in the high country are already dealing with fires and then the fire weather watch means conditions are going to get even worse for those firefighters dealing with that and the potential of new fires. this comes at 5:00 to 5:00 thursday evening. 36 hours of a critical fire condition. today windy conditions. breezy in yosemite at 79. mid-80s to near 90 through the central valley. 81 in l.a. still 100 in palm springs. if you're heading up to lake tahoe, that cold front coming through today. look at the temperatures drop into the upper 50s to mid-60s this weekend with freezing cold

been able to provide us the capital we need in order to help start up affordable housing developments throughout the bay area. >> reporter: that fund has gone to more than 20 developers to create 2,300 units of affordable housing. some are still empty lots awaiting ground break. many sites are near public transit and jobs. a big challenge for affordable housing developers is finding land especially in the area where there is so much competing interest for commercial development. this site is going to be the site of 130 affordable housing units. >> every piece of land they're competing for, so is a luxury housing developer or so is an office developer. sometimes a city or county looking to cite another office building. >> reporter: silicon valley continues to grow jobs. the housing for silicon valley has had a banner year lending over $73 million in 2019.

no spare the air today. cold but windy tonight and we'll have average to above average highs throughout the extended. a look at the low clouds and see them churning along the coast today. a lot of orange and yellow. 70s and 80s. san jose at 84. we start at 80 and drop down into the mid-70s like 76 at san mateo. barely 70 in downtown. it's going to feel real comfortable today. sonoma at 84. along the east bay shore, mid to upper 70s with san leandro, newark at 79. and 83 to 87 our spread and east bay valleys. if you haven't used the air conditioner, don't need to worry about it. in our valleys, mid to upper 40s. elsewhere low 50s. up in the hills because of the winds and the fire danger we'll be in the 60s. thursday the same. it gets warmer than average
