weekends and holidays. kate larsen has been getting reaction to the new developments and joins us live from san francisco, kate? >> reporter: eric, we are up here on lombard and hyde. you can see lots of cars and tourists per usual even though it is fleet week sunday and also the italian festival is happening nearby today. so lots of people in the neighborhood, but frankly on a sunday, this is usually what this area looks like and it can be a real problem for the folks who live nearby in terms of safety issues and getting around their own neighborhood. because there are about 2 million people a year who come to visit the crooked street. so the bill which governor newsom vetoed would have allowed san francisco to enforce a reservation and fee system on the crooked portion of lombard street, requiring tourists to pay $5 to $10 to drive down the famous street. the idea was to control and reduce congestion in the area for all the residents. governor newsom felt the bill

create s aoanrancisco and san mateo assembly member phil ting who wrote the bill as well as tourists. would you have paid $5 to $10 to drive down? >> no. >> i think it should be free. we should just be able to come any time we want and take pictures. >> obviously very disappointed. i'm going to be sitting down with the city next week to discuss potential plan. >> reporter: i've also been in touch with san francisco district 2 supervisor, katherine stephanie, who's been working hard on this bill. she said, i will keep working with our state representatives in sacramento to address the governor's concerns in new, revised legislation to alleviate the safety and environmental issue is posed by congestion on lombard street. clearly this issue is not over, but certainly a disappointment for a number of the residents and also the lawmakers who

oversee the this area who were trying to come up with some sort of solution for both the tourists and the residents here on lombard street. we'll have more at 11:00. the weather was picture perfect most of the weekend to take in fleet week in san francisco. the navy's blue 18 yeses stole the show this afternoon with another action-packed performance over the city. the show was delayed by a few minutes by fog, but they made it out to thrill the crowds. this weekend always brings out huge crowds of people who want to take in the air show, see the ships, and interact with the men and women who are serving our country. >> we're all very proud to be here. it's our job and what we signed up for, to serve the american people. to do it here in san francisco is an opportunity. we love doing it. >> tomorrow some of the ships taking part will be open for public tours. we'll have a full list of events

on abc7news.com. we have extensive coverage of fleet week on abc7news.com. there's a full list of events and more ship tours tomorrow. it was just days ago president trump announced he was plling u.s. support for kurdish fighters in northern syria. the decision leaves the kurds vulnerable to turkish troops who have launched an offensive. but there is late word that the kurds have now struck a deal with syria possibly brokered by russian officials for protection against turkey and that syrian defense forces are moving into position in northern syria along the border with turkey. the u.s. controversial move has led to protests around the globe. happening now, one of those protests is going on in san francisco. not just any intersection. it's in union square right in te heart of the city. that's where abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is live, and cornell, you've been following the protesters all day long. >> reporter: these protesters have been out here from early

this morning. they have been sending a strong message all across the city. they want the northern territory in syria protected from kurdish forces and earlier they wanted everyone to know this. bay area kurds were making their presence known in union square. these people and their supporters are outraged about what's happening in their homeland. >> all of us are feeling pain and sadness. >> reporter: they're protesting president trump's decision to pull back u.s. troops from northern syria and turkey's brutal assault on u.s.-backed kurdish troops and civilians. >> we are watching genocide unfold before our very eyes and nothing is happening. air strikes are mostly targeting civilians and hospitals, and there's no justification for that at all. >> reporter: the pro-kurdish group staged another protest at sfo on saturday next to the turkish airlines ticket counter.

this man visited the northern syria territory this summer. >> i have seen people being killed by isis. so the victory over isis is absolutely far-fetched nonsense. isis hasn't been defeated. >> reporter: the group then took their protest to the streets. the trump administration saying tonight it's ready to impose severe sanctions on turkey. this group says that's fine, but not enough. they would like to see a no-fly zone imposed in northern syria. they would also like people, consumers especially during the holiday season, to boycott turkish products. in the south bay, we are awaiting word from the san jose police department on the identity of a body found inside a parked car last night. the family of tech executive erin valendi halted its search awful hearing of the discovery. she heads up a company in utah and missed her flight home from

a business trip to the bay area on monday. her parents told our media partners at the mercury news they fear she has had a manic episode. residents evacuated from their homes in los angeles county are slowly being allowed back home. all evacuation orders have of been lifted. favorable weather conditions have helped firefighters make progress battling the 7,900 auker blaze. the fire blocked hillsides from sylmar to porter ranch. residents say they're happy to be home. >> very relieved. it's a helpless feeling when you have to evacuate in the middle of the night, grab what you could. we're thankful we're all okay. >> the fire is 41% contained. 21 structures have been destroyed, another 11 have been damaged. a brush fire burned about one acre atcisco's lake merced. you're looking at a picture shared by the san francisco fire department. the flames never threatened any structures. arson investigators are looking for what sparked this afternoon's fire. dramatic video captures a

wrong-way driver on a southern california freeway. it ended with a collision when the -- with a chp cruiser. abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area. one of the issues we're looking for solutions to is recycling as centers all over are closing. the help that's on the way courtesy of the state. there was a lot more going on than just fleet week this weekend. the big celebration that took over san francisco's streets. i'm meteorologist drew tuma. it was a sunny end to the weekend but also a cooler finish with temperatures 10 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. and that trend continues the next seven days ahead.

a driver claims they blacked out while driving the wrong way, careening along an emergency lane, then hitting a highway patrol car in southern california. you're about to see video showing the terrifying moments. >> he's coming, he's coming! >> the high-speed drama unfolded this morning along interstate 5 in orange county. >> he's crashed into chp! he's into a unit!

whoa! >> this morning's crash sent at least three people to the hospital. chp officers arrested the driver. he's suspected of being drunk. abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area, and we're focusing on a variety of issues that affect our way of life. they range from homeless and housing to transportation and the environment, and that includes recycling. we've seen a number of centers in the bay area close recently. help could be on the way. governor newsom signed a bill to provide funding to start a mobile recycling pilot program. $5 million will go towards cal recycle, which will be run by the state. one of the largest operators in the state, replanet, shut down its operations in august and let go hundreds of employees. additional funding in the bill will help recycling centers around the state stay open. abc 7 news has dedicated a week of coverage to recycling because this is a complicated

♪ in san francisco, that's the pittsburg high school band playing during today's italian heritage parade. this weekend marks the 150th anniversary of san francisco's first columbus day celebration. dozens of bands include sparks from the north beach and fisherman's wharf while thousands enjoyed the parade sights and sounds. on the peninsula, you know halloween is close when gargantuan gourds take over half moon bay. the weigh-off is tomorrow with the winner getting a price of $7 a pound. that's a pretty good chunk of change considering the pumpkins routinely come in at a ton or more. there's also a $30,000 prize should a grower break the world record. it was set in 2016 at a weigh-off in germany where pumpkins -- a pumpkin tipped the
