orleans at the edge of the historic french quarter crashing down on saturday morning. the famed canal street closed. officials warning people to stay away from the area. fearing the entire building could give way. the rescue mission a dangerous one with an unstable structure. >> safety is top priority. rescue absolutely, but we cannot overestimate the structure being unsound, unstable, right now. >> reporter: the building crumbling in just seconds. you can see in this terrifying video workers on site running for their lives. >> look at those guys running. >> reporter: a cloud of debris engulfing bystanders on the ground. people in this trolley narrowly escaping. >> into the back! >> reporter: o'brien in that trolley watched in horror. >> when you stepped off the trolley car you couldn't see 20 feet in front of you. there was just smoke and debris everywhere. >> reporter: at least two dead, one body still in the wreckage. 30 more hurt, including one person working on the eighth floor, undergoing surgery on his leg. officials have brought in a third crane to try to stabilize one of the remaining cranes you see in the distance there. they fear it could fall as they continue this desperate search. marcus moore, abc news, new

orleans. >> marcus moore, thank you. turning to the intensifying impeachment inquiry taking center stage on capitol hill, with more officials poised to appear before lawmakers. >> the democratic-led house panel is conducting the investigation stemming from president trump's phone call to ukraine will hear today from fiona hill. she was the president's former top adviser on russia who left the national security council in august. >> gordon sondland, u.s. ambassador to the european union, is scheduled to testify on thursday against the wishes of the white house. sondland declared in a text message that there was no quid pro quo in the decision to withhold military aid to ukraine while asking its president to investigate joe biden. but he is expected to say that he was relaying president trump's words and did not know if it was actually true. kurdish officials have agreed to work with the syrian government to fend off turkey's devastating assault. >> the shift in alliance came hours after the u.s. announced plans to withdraw all american

troops from northern syria and bombs rained down on civilians in border towns, shattering kurdish families. >> as abc's ian pannell tells us, more than 200,000 kurds have been forced to leave their homes and hundreds have been killed. >> reporter: this video obtained by abc news appears to show the fury of the turkish attack on the border town of talabiad. president trump ordering the withdrawal of all u.s. troops from northern syria. just one week after his fateful call with president erdogan of turkey triggered a disastrous chain of events. the brutal assault of turkish forces targeting america's kurdish allies has left a trail of death, displacement, and destruction. hundreds are reported to be dead. some of those killed murdered at the roadside by radical islamist militias sponsored by turkey. many videos too graphic to show. one leading kurdish political leader dragged from her car and shot in the head. if verified, this is a war

crime.thtag of civilians. a convoy packed with civilians and journalists trying to enter a border town was struck by a turkish air strike. 11 killed, more than 70 wounded. turkey says it's battling terrorists and refuses to negotiate with the kurds. nearly 200,000 kurds are now displaced, driven from their homes. many who were guarding isis prisons and refugee camps holding isis sympathizers also forced to flee. at least 23 isis prisoners may have already escaped. hundreds of isis supporters broke out of their camp too. but the cost of this war only growing. we met this little girl, 8 years old, in a hospital bed. her leg blown off. her brother mohammad dead. her brother ahmed can't begin to describe what he saw. these children the victims one week after that phone call. ian pannell, abc news, on the

syrian/turkish border. >> our thanks to ian and his reporting. hundreds of migrants who formed a caravan in hopes of making their way to the u.s. have been stopped in their tracks. >> mexican officials rounded up the asylum seekers after they trudged about 20 miles north, many of them from africa, the caribbean, and central america. mexico has cracked down on caravans since president trump threatened to shut down the southern border. a texas investigation is under way into the deadly police shooting of a 28-year-old woman inside her own home. a vigil was held outside the ft. worth home of atatiana jefferson. the shooting happened saturday around 2:30 a.m. as police responded to a neighbor's call about the woman's front door being open. police responded to the home, looking into her bedroom window and shouting "put your hands up" before firing a single shot into the window. overnight the 911 call was released. >> calling about my neighbor. the front door's been open since 10:00.

i haven't seen anybody moving around. it's not normal for them to have both of the doors open at this time of night. i feel bad. had i thought called the police department, she would probably still be alive today. >> jefferson was reportedly playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew. the ft. worth police department says the officer, now on administrative leave, will be interviewed later today by internal affairs. in alabama, authorities are still searching for a little girl who was abducted this weekend. 3-year-old camille mckinney was kidnapped during a birthday party saturday in birmingham. the toyota sequoia believed used in the abduction was spotted 10 miles away from where the party was being held. police say they have detained a person of interest in this case for questioning but there's still no word on that little girl. tens of thousands of rescue workers in japan are again searching for survivors of this weekend's powerful typhoon.

the storm's heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, washing away homes and leaving a trail of destruction. more than 30 are dead and a dozen more are missing. many of the searchers are wading through muddy water, often up to their waist. back here at home, police in north carolina found an unbelievable scene at the site of a two-car accident. >> take a look at what happened to one of the cars. the nissan was left dangling, grille down, in telephone wires in raleigh. police say none of the three people inside was old enough to drive. amazingly neither they nor the driver of the other car was seriously hurt. but they've got some 'splaining to do. >> yeah, and i cannot believe no serious injuries. and how is that possible for a car to end up -- that is talent? >> yeah, i will say -- obviously some crazy things can happen, and those wires get involved and speed, you know, as well. things like this obviously can happen. but again, no one hurt, so that's good. no one seriously hurt. coming up, what to buy today to take advantage of those sales on this holiday.

we're on the scene and i we're on the scene and it's really bad. >> is the person still trapped in the car? >> yes, he is, and the car is on fire. >> police in columbus, ohio, are praising three of their officers for saving a man from this burning car. they had to pull him out of the wreck by his legs, and just in the nick of time. the fire flared up and completely engulfed the car. the driver only suffered a broken leg.
