now fromthet -- now from abc 7 live breaking news. . for tanks at a fuel storage facility explode in the east bay. glrs almost sounded like someone shot like a missile or a canon. >> reporter: crews work through the night to stop the stubborn fire. >> i've been driving from oakland three and a half hours. >> reporter: and relief after 80 finally reopens. and here is the latest following an explosion and seven-hour fire fight. containers finally contained. >> and i 80 is reopen and all shelter in place orders have been lifted. >> calls starting can coming in about 2:00 about the fire at

nustar energy. >> and live outside the storage facility in crocket. lisa. >> reporter: firefighters contained this fire about two hours ago. take a look at video from sky seven and it shows crews mopping up the scene. it was a dramatic scene that lasted more than 12 hours and involved hundreds of firefighters from contra costra county, murin county and cal fire. >> reporter: as night fell, the flames flared up. it engulfed new tanks and threatened three more carrying ethanol and jet fuel. >> it has now been can by the secondary containment structure that's doing what it was designed to do. >> reporter: huge plumes of

smoke could be seen for miles, they contained dangerous particulates which they're trying to protect the public from. >> the idea you've shut off your air conditioning, heating and fans. that will protect you in your home from most of the particulate matter. >> reporter: incident siren has been going on for hours after as a recaution. it forced the closer of interstate 80 in both directions. but by 930 all freeways freewaf reopened. frfrs >> whev you have an incident so close to the freeway, that is going to be a huge distraction and can result in numerous vehicle accidents. so for this reason recommend the freeways remained closed. >> reporter: now there was one incident involving a contractor

from nustar. he was near one of the tanks and he wasn't able to evacuate in time. therefore he hid in a ditch and had to wait for firefighters to help him out. he was fortunately not hurt. live abc 7 news. the raging fire left traffic backed up for miles tonight. take a look at this video just a short time ago. >> and live. relee in the last hour 1/2? >> reporter: yeah. certainly. just about at 9:30 is when the chp said it would be reopening both directions of i 80. but these are back ups we saw here until about 10:15 tonight. but here sky 7 with a look at traffic moving on -- highway 80 near highway 4 after the freeway reopened.

a welcome site for those that spent all afternoon trying to maneuver. we spent hours in stop and go traffic. easy to note this is frustration on the face of drivers. by 4:00 both east and westbound trafficking forced drivers to take alternate routes. even as the day grew later traffic didn't letup. even our drive around 8:00 c was slow moving. >> i've just been driving from oakland three and a half hours and i wigts i had known a better way to send me back to 680 and go around that way and go through the back way and i would have been home hours ago. >> reporter: and there was literally for those traveling short distances as well, streets were clogged byep people tryingo

facility to 80. let's take a look at what it looked like this afternoon. sky 7 was above crockett when wn shot that thick, black smoke. the last fire was at chevron's richmond refinery in 2012. fumes from that fire spread for miles and 15,000 sought medical help. chevron paid 200 million in fines and millions more to settle claims. they believe a leak in a corroded pipe is what caused that fire. >> we have been giving out alerts. just be sure to enable push alerts. the fourth democratic debate is now in the books. and we saw a different candidate taking heat from the otherer members on the stage.
