most yet, and so many took aim at the new front-runner, elizabeth warren. the speaking time tells the story, warren five minutes more than her closest rival as she was forced to defend herself against 16 separate attacks. >> warren drawing attacks and bernie sanders returning to the stage after suffering from that heart attack. abc's linsey davis is in westerville, ohio, with all the highlights. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, michael. certainly some fiery exchanges on the campus here last night, again and again we saw pile-ons on senator elizabeth warren. meanwhile, mayor pete buttigieg was on the offense. it seemed clear that several of these candidates saw last night as a do or die moment, and some did, and other campaigns seemed to die. overnight, elizabeth warren stood center stage rising in the polls and now under attack from her rivals. >> senator warren is more focused on being punitive or pitting some part of the country against the other. >> reporter: the massachusetts senator also facing tough unanswered questions about her health care plan.

long list of crises of donald trump's making and tt's why dude got to go and when i'm in commander-in-chief we will stop this madness. >> reporter: of the 19 candidates who are running only 8 so far have qualified for next month's debate in georgia. we've also learned that at least two of the congresswomen of the so-called squad including alexandria ocasio-cortez plan to endorse senator bernie sanders for president. george? >> ilhan omar as well. linsey, thanks very much. let's get some analysis from jon karl. we did see a brand-new dynamic on the stage last night. all those attacks on elizabeth warren. you saboth mayor pete and senator klobuchar trying to crowd into joe biden's centrist space. >> reporter: when you are the front-runner, you get hit hard. we saw in the previous debate, it was biden that took all the hits. this time it was clearly elizabeth warren, and you saw amy klobuchar and mayor pete buttigieg kind of gang up on her

one-two punch and not go after biden, it was almost as if they were waiting or expecting biden to fade in this race and they want to pick up the space he has occupied. warren also, george, i have to say looked a little bit evasive in her answers, but when you are the front-runner, you take the hits. >> you definitely do take the hits and one of the things that we've seen not only is elizabeth warren rising in the polls but joe biden in these new fund-raising numbers that came out, he has far less money on hand than warren an others. >> reporter: this is remarkable. the cash on hand. this is what you need to run your campaign. biden has about a third of what mayor buttigieg has in terms of cash on hand, a fourth of what bernie sanders has. he is number five overall in terms of the money to run the race. that does not look like a front-runner. debate was different last night, >> and jon, the other way this

debate was different last night, far more focus on president trump than you had seen in the earlier debates where democrats were more focused on each other. >> reporter: well, particularly in our debate in houston, it was, you know, you went long periods of time with no mention whatsoever on donald trump. the candidates wanted to focus on what they would do and attack their rivals in this race. you can no longer ignore donald trump, the impeachment inquiry is center here and trump was very much front and center in this debate. >> okay, jon karl, thanks very much. cecilia. that crisis in syria was also a major topic last night at the debate. vice president pence today heads to turkey hoping to broker a cease-fire deal. this as russia moves in to fill the void left by the u.s. withdrawal. let's get right to our chief glal affairs correspondent martha raddatz there in washington and, martha, we're just now hearing from turkey's leader on this. >> reporter: we sure are, cecilia. turkey's president is strongly rejecting calls for a cease-fire this morning saying he will only talk to president trump in turkey in person, but in a matter of hours, vice president pence will be on his way to turkey to lead a delegation trying to stop turkey's assault on the kurds as u.s. forces continue their dangerous

withdrawal from northern syria. with turkey pounding northern syria taking key terrain, a close call for american troops. turkish militias coming dangerously near a u.s. base. the americans responding with a show of force. f-15 fighter jets and apache helicopters in the air. and as the 1,000 american troops move out under president trump's orders, the russians are filling the void rolling through the country with syrian government forces. this russian journalist giving a tour of what appears to be a now-abandoned u.s. base. a basketball court now empty. this russian who has worked for pro-government media saying the americans were here yesterday and now we are. but well over 175,000 people have now beedid and scores killed and injured. our kurdish allies feeling betrayed, but president trump saying he doesn't want u.s.

forces policing 7,000 miles away. >> we want to bring our soldiers back home after so many years and they're the greatest warriors in the world. they're policing, they're not a police force. >> reporter: on capitol hill, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell rejecting that idea. >> it makes us a prudent and responsible world power. it stands up for our own security and the freedom of others. >> reporter: but president trump is unconvinced. a senior u.s. official telling abc news that the commander of kurdish forces spoke to president trump urging him to keep more troops in syria, but the president said the official told him he did not need to go halfway around the world to fight isis. george? >> defiant despite the backlash. thanks very much. we're going to get the latest now on impeachment. with new testimony set for today from a key state department official, the president's personal lawyer, rudy giuliani, vice president mike pence and the defense department all defying congressional subpoenas refusing to turn over any

documents. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce is tracking it all from capitol hill. and mary, house speaker nancy pelosi is holding firm on her refusal to hold a formal vote on an impeachment investigation. >> reporter: yeah, george, despite growing pressure the speaker is holding off for now on a formal vote to authorize this impeachment inquiry and she's defending their impeachment process. meeting late yesterday, the speaker and top democrats couldn't come to an agreement on a vote because in part they are facing a lot of pushback from vulnerable democrats in swing districts who are concerned that a vote to authorize this inquiry might be confused with an actual vote for impeachment. now, the white house, of course, has been quick to note the democrats are breaking with precedent here. they say that without this vote, they are deprived of certain rights, but, george, it seems democrats don't want to appear that they are caving to political pressure from the white house and the speaker is adamant that under the constitution, they simply do not have to have this vote. >> those are the rules, meantime, more witnesses putting rudy giuliani at the center of this whole effort.

>> reporter: yeah, and, george, right now rudy giuliani is defiant. he has announced he simply is not going to cooperate with house investigators. he is calling this inquiry baseless and illegitimate, but he is under a growing intense spotlight for running essentially a rogue operation to push ukraine to investigate the president's rival joe biden and this morning, george, there are also growing questions about what role the acting white house chief of staff mick mulvaney may have played. a state department witness told congressional investigators that mulvaney played a key role in stripping control of the u.s. relationship with ukraine away from officials that have the most expertise in this area. lawmakers may want to talk to mulvaney as well. and as for giuliani, well, what can they do? they can potentially issue some subpoenas to him to actually come in and testify, but it doesn't look like he's going to comply with that. of course, democrats say, all this stonewalling, george, simply adds to their case for obstruction. >> meantime, president trump maintains his phone call was perfect but the white house showing real concern now. >> reporter: yeah, and george, we have learned that the white

house is now conducting an internal review of the president's phone call with the ukrainian president that sparked this impeachment inquiry. sources say this internal probe is looking especially at the actions of the deputy white house counsel john eisenberg who placed that rough transcript of the call into a separate private server, george. we are told that this is simply a fact-finding review, but there are reports that some within the white house think that this is a hunt for a scapegoat. >> much more to come. thanks very much. michael. we're going to turn to the nor'easter taking aim threatening to make a mess of the evening commute across the region. several major airlines offering to waive change fees for travel in and out of the area and ginger is tracking it all and joins us now with the timing of the storm. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you, michael. we have already seen this storm drop 3 inches to 5 inches of very helpful rain southwest of montgomery, alabama, helping the drought through georgia, but boy, is it going to come fast through tomorrow morning. that is the timing in the northeast. if you're from pennsylvania and

new jersey, over to connecticut and even up to maine, you'll be thinking about the rain but the wind and that's why i want to bring you to the state of new york. use this as an example to showcase how windy and how rainy it's going to get. let me tuck myself into the long island sound here just to give you an idea. anybody in green that floods easily, when you get 2 inches to 4 inches of rain falling tonight if you're driving i-87 or i-90, especially north of albany, it looks like we'll get those heavier pockets. now, bring that camera back out because the whole state is going to get windy and i think this is what you're going to notice the most especially going into tomorrow morning. but the closer you are to the coast, the heftier the winds. i'm standing in the streamlines right where the low pressure system is located but you can see them coming right over long island. jfk, laguardia, both right there could easily see gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour. cecilia, it is not just new york. atlantic city to boston feeling the winds by tomorrow morning. >> we are bracing for it. thank you, ginger. we're going to turn to that fiery explosion at a california fuel storage facility. thousands of nearby residents

were ordered to take shelter from those fumes before the fire was contained overnight. will carr has the story. >> reporter: this morning, new video of that devastating explosion at an energy facility in northern california. >> oh. >> reporter: the fireball created by explosive chemicals. the roof of the container flying into the air and crashing to the ground. >> we just had a large explosion from the area. >> reporter: overnight, firefighters contained the blaze. miraculously, no one at the facility was injured. shortly after flames and smoke filled the air, officials ordered a shelter in place for nearby communities as the explosion released potentially hazardous fumes into the sky raising health concerns for the surrounding area. >> the two tanks that are burning both contain ethanol, an additive for gasoline. they contain or contained about 250,000 gallons. >> reporter: one of the surrounding tanks contains jet fuel. two others contain ethanol. there's still no word on when

the nearby highway will re-open or what impact those toxic plumes will have. that explosion was so powerful, residents thought there was an earthquake. the cause is now under investigation. michael? >> all right, thank you so much, will. now to baseball, you guys. the washington nationals, here they are. they are world series bound for the first time in franchise history. they swept the st. louis cardinals out of the playoffs last night. washington jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning against the cardinals and they never looked back, winning the game 7-4 and they might have "baby shark" to thank for their big playoff run, guys, because the team got hot when outfielder gerardo parra began using the viral kids' song as his walk-up music back in june when he would come up to bat. he got two hits that game and he has been exciting ever since. the fans and teammates all jump in.

spent her first night last night and she's in general population and that she's roommates. we're also told that the only thing she could bring with her was a bible and a piece of jewelry valued at less than $100 and she will quickly begin her job in the kitchen doing food service. this morning, actress felicity huffman is waking up behind bars. reps for the star revealing that she reported to a prison in dublin, california, tuesday. huffman starting a 14-day sentence for her role in the "varsity blues" college admissions scandal. >> i said a lot of things i shouldn't have. i'm sorry. >> reporter: in may the "desperate housewives" star pleading guilty to paying $15,000 to have a proctor correct her daughter's s.a.t. answers. now, she will serve out her two-week sentence at the federal correctional institution 350 miles from los angeles. here inmates wake up at 5:00 a.m. and must adhere to a strict dress code which includes

khaki pants and a blouse with a brown t-shirt underneath. on the prison menu, bran flakes for breakfast, breaded fish sandwiches for lunch, and salisbury steak for dinner. over the next 13 days the actress may be able to pass her time by working on pre-approved hobby crafts like crochet, origami or scrapbooking. >> dublin is almost a camp. it is a place where minimum security prisoners enjoy the luxury of being minimum security prisoners. >> reporter: jennifer meyers served 17 months in low security prison similar to huffman's after she got involved in marijuana trafficking through an ex-boyfriend. now, she's a prison consultant helping nonviolent first-time offenders prepare for their new life behind bars. >> i like to say, respect prison. if you walk in with a sense of humility it's really going to make your stay much easier. >> reporter: the "varsity blues" lead prosecutor andrew lelling speaking to our affiliate, wcvb, days after huffman's sentencing. >> she took responsibility almost immediately.

she was contrite, did not try to minimize her conduct. i think she handled it in a very classy way. >> reporter: actress lori loughlin and her husband are still awaiting trial for their involvement in the scandal. the couple stands accused of paying $500,000 to get their two daughters into usc pleading not guilty to conspiracy charges. they could face up to 40 years behind bars. >> if she's convicted, we would probably ask for a higher sentence for her than we did for felicity huffman. >> reporter: now, once she's released she still has to serve a year's probation along with 250 hours of community service and pay a $30,000 fine. right now, george, she says she looking forward to seeing her family in two weeks, and she hopes that once she's released, the general public can give her a second chance. >> okay. kayna, thanks very much. let's bring in dan abrams for more on this.

as kayna said, felicity will be among the general population. this is minimum security but only a small percentage are white collar criminals and it is under staff security concerns. >> look. i don't think so. i think this is still a minimum security prison. it is still almost all nonviolent offenders. so i think that they're going to be keeping a close eye on her, even though, look, she is with other inmates. this is not a situation where she's going to be in isolation. but she's only been there 14 days as well. >> 14 days, but you still have the question of how much of that sentence was for demonstration effect to send a message to the country? >> well, look, let's not forget since she was sentenced there's been someone else who waws sentenced, another parent for almost the identical conduct to what she was sentenced for who got no prison time, just probation, so anyone who is saying, oh, my goodness, if anyone had been felicity huffman they would have gotten six months the answer is, no, if it had not been felicity huffman you might have gotten no prison time at all. >> worse being felicity huffman. >> in this particula situation, absolutely. you saw it was literally $15,000. in the other case, it was altering test scores and almost

exactly the same conduct, and in that case, got no prison time. >> and that means when people like lori loughlin are fighting these charges, if they are found guilty -- >> look, there's no question if lori loughlin is found guilty she will serve more time. i mean a lot more because not just the fighting part, but her conduct is considered much more egregious than what felicity huffman engaged in. a lot more money. a lot more effort. a lot more fake pictures and all of that ends up mattering in the context of both the crime and the conviction. >> we have got to get you some tea. you have got a cold. >> i know. >> you had a cold last week. >> i got up and started talking to someone, wait a second, what happened to my voice? >> dr. ashton is here. >> yes. >> keep it down there. we don't need it down here at this end of the table. all right, dan. thank you so much, man. and we're going to turn now to that mystery in paradise. an american lawyer murdered in the island nation of micronesia. gunned down after a run with her

dog and this morning, we're hearing from the victim's husband. paula faris is here with more. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning, michael. her family says the young woman from wisconsin was passionate about giving a voice to the voiceless, and taking a stand for them. this morning, there are no suspects in custody for her murder, but the fbi is now involved. when rachelle bergeron and her husband simon moved to micronesia, a tiny series of islands in the pacific ocean, they thought they'd found happiness in paradise. >> raclle really impacted the community and she's got a lot of friends here. >> reporter: but this morning, unthinkable tragedy for the couple. rachelle, an acting attorney general on the island, was returning from a jog when her husband who was making brownies inside their kitchen suddenly heard gunshots. >> i heard the shots, three shots, pretty loud. i didn't see any of the -- like the shooter and stuff. i came out and i saw rachelle and our dog. i wasn't thinking about anything else. >> reporter: simon and a neighbor rushed her to the

hold her infant daughter. then when she had surgery just six months ago she was told she could lose her hearing and facial function. her message this morning, it's okay to be scared. this morning, kelly and matthew stafford is opening up to espn about the moment in january when kelly realized something was wrong. >> i just never felt the room spinning feeling i was having and then the vertigo hit and that's when it really kind of -- the cue to me, i'm not okay. >> reporter: at her husband's urging, kelly wept nt to get he symptoms checked, eventually getting an mri. >> one of those where you're going into an mri and expecting it to come back completely clear. weren't expecting to get the results that we got. >> reporter: the 29-year-old was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma, a benign tumor in her brain. kelly's doctors scheduled surgery to remove it. >> i was terrified. i was terrified to not be here. i had all the confidence in the world in our surgeon but it's brain surgery.

i wrote everyone who is there letters when i was in that waiting room. >> reporter: kelly was faced with the possibility of losing both her hearing and facial function, but the 12-hour operation was a success. kelly sharing this video of her up and walking with matthew and her family. >> if anyone tried to like slide tackle you, you're protected. >> reporter: her recovery has not been easy. the normally active mother who prior to surgery posts video of herself working out, had to relearn how to walk and suffered crippling pain and exhaustion, but through it all, her husband matthew kept her going. in a first-person essay for espn, kelly pays tribute to the detroit lions' star quarterback writing, matthew was incredible during the whole process. he wasiterally by my side at every step. this is kelly five months after brain surgery. she's been documenting her progress on social media showing both the ups and the downs.

>> i learned not that i didn't know already how tough she is. >> going through this we really learned how strong we are. nothing else matters. just family. >> they really are a strong couple. it's brought them together and she says that matthew told her post-surgery if it was good news he said he'll be standing on your right side. if it's bad news, i'll be standing on your left side. she doesn't remember a lot post surgery but does remember him standing on the right side. with her story, michael, she just really wants to encourage women and mothers out there if you feel the slightest bit off, get checked out. don't put yourself on the back burner any longer. that's what she did. she advocated for herself. when she went to the doctor they said it was vertigo and gave her medicine. it didn't help the symptoms and so then they -- she kept advocating and that's when she had the mri. they discovered the tumor. >> as you said in your tease, it's okay to be scared. >> it is. >> and she's obviously a big fighter. >> clearly. >> we saw -- >> no more ways than one. >> in more ways than one.

[ applause ] all right. we are now on our series on the secrets of tiktok, the app taking social media by storm so it's described as a video sharing app that connects you with -- to people with similar interests. thousands of channels covering dozens of topics including couponing, and this is a story we first saw in "money" magazine. becky worley is here with more. break it down for us those not cool enough to understand what it is. >> tiktok, yeah, it's all of the user generated videos that people make and the hottest, goofiest most intense clips float to the top. but in the midst of all that outrageous content our informational videos and they're offering good advice. we're looking specifically at one mom who is using tiktok to teach others how to save big in the new world of couponing. ♪ i used to be so beautiful >> reporter: it's the place

where you can show off your dance moves or even your gardening skills. >> you just leave the top growth. >> reporter: now tiktok users are sharing and watching tips on how to save serious cash. >> i'm coupon katie, and this is where i show you how it's done. >> reporter: she's teaching her followers to save money with the use of coupons and everyday deals. >> who wants free stuff? all those inspiring to be couponers, i have the deal for you. >> reporter: but you didn't expect to find such huge interest on tiktok. >> i was surprised. i thought tiktok was for teenagers and could care less about saving money. >> reporter: money.com editor julia glum says it's the opposite. >> there is an audience that is super engaged in wanting to learn how to save money. i think these tiktok coupon lessons almost are an easy to consume way to kind of dip your toe into it. >> reporter: the fast-paced app is ideal for the kind of callout videos that katie posts. >> okay, you guys need to run, not walk, run to target right now. >> keeping a mix of silly. >> good for your soul.

>> reporter: and informative clips on her feed. >> this is the number. >> reporter: while her advice is tried and true. >> i recommend printing out every single store's coupon policy. a lot of times cashiers don't know what they're talking about, and remind them what corporate policy is in case you hit a snag. >> reporter: she's educating a whole new generation on the value of a dollar. >> i do think that i have maybe put a spin on couponing and i think it's attracting a lot more young people into the couponing world that, hey, couponing is not dorky, it's not lame. it's actually something interesting and neat and different. reporter: really useful info in a really new format. >> it really is. okay, but say you haven't figured out tiktok, you found other apps that can help you save money. >> there are new apps. one i like is price waiter. it basically turns the whole internet into ebay because you bid on items and you can get them for less than the manufacturer price, and even less than the lowest price

you'll find online. we bid on a keyboard, and we found it for $69 off the manufacturer's price, $49 off the amazon price, and that was all by bidding. we did the same on one of those massagers that are really popular. we got $79 off the lowest price we could find online. >> wow. that's really good. [ applause ] another one here. i was reading about this one this morning. it's called snip snap. >> monica is a couponer extraordinaire, taking pictures of these using the app, and then what happens is it kind of solves two problems. one, it gets rid of all these pieces of paper that are floating around the wallet. if you are trying to be a serious couponer, and it puts it onto yore phour phone, and digi them, so other people can use your coupon, and you can use the coupons that they put in. >> good deal.

>> reporter: she bang, all right. sara's chocolate chip cookies have taken over the internet. the insanely popular cookie crispy and krivengled on the edges and oozing with gooey chocolate in the center comes together thanks to her pan banging technique. >> i was trying to create a cookie that was just a thin and choicecookie and kept spreading and so i -- imindicate out of opening up and banging the pan. i realized, oh, i'm on to something here. >> reporter: the cookie uses all the usual ingredients, butter, sugar an egg, vanilla and water mixed together w ou salt, baking soda andof course, chocolate. the twist, after baking in a 350-degree oven for ten minutes, the banging begins. >> the cookie falls and collapses and creates a ridge around the edge and then you let it bake two more minutes. it'll puff up and then you repeat the process. so every time you pick up the pan and let it drop it creates another ridge.
