dragged during a traffic stop in lawrenceville, georgia. the driver is pulled over for allegedly running a stop sign. the officer's uniform was caught in the car as the suspect fled, dragging him on the ground for several feet. the suspect lain and is charged driving and attempting to elude police. the officer was treated for minor injuries. turning to the murder and deadly police shooting at the home of a legendary actor in southern california. >> police were called to the home of a man who played tarzan in the late '60s to find his wife stabbed to death. abc's kayna whitworth has more. >> reporter: police trying to learn what sparked a deadly incident at the home of ron ely, the star best known for his role as tarzan. santa barbara authorities rushing to his residence after receiving a call about a family disturbance. >> we're going to get more people here, form up a team, clear the house and go from there. >> reporter: inside police making contact with the actor and finding his wife, valerie ely, stabbed to death. deputies immediately issuing a

shelter in place for the entire neighborhood. >> do we have an armed subject? >> unknown if armed. method was stabbing. >> reporter: police finding the alleged suspect, their son, cameron ely, on the property, who they say threatened them. deputies opening fire, killing him. no officers were injured in this incident, and authorities are now launching a criminal homicide investigation. kayna whitworth, abc news, los angeles. thank you, kayna. this morning we're hearing from heroic high school students who jumped a classmate who brought a gun to school. >> la habra high school outside los angeles was placed on lockdown tuesday. police say a 14-year-old freshman brought a handgun to campus to either show it off or try to sell it. fellow students took matters into their own hands when they saw the gun. >> i grabbed him by his legs and pulled him down. three other of my friends came and topped on top of him to hold him stable. by then he was kind of flipped around and he said, grab his

about the assault on the kurds. >> as the president defends his decision the vice president and secretary of state are arriving in turkey hoping to negotiate a cease-fire. abc's jonathan karl has more. >> reporter: at the white house president trump defended his decision to abandon the kurds. further distancing himself from america's allies in the fight against isis. >> the kurds know how to fight. and as i said, they're not angels. they're not angels. take a look. >> the yeas are 354 -- >> reporter: shortly after the president spoke, the house of representatives, democrats and republicans, overwhelmingly voted to condemn his decision to pull american troops from northern syria. later congressional leaders went to the white house to discuss syria, but democrats say they were so offended by the way the president spoke, they walked out of the meeting. >> what we witnessed on the part of the president was a meltdown, sad to say. >> he was insulting, particularly to the speaker. she kept her cool completely, but he called her a third-rate politician.

responsible for slaughtering thousands of people, and i don't want to be responsible for destroying the turkish economy. and i will. history will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don't happen. don't be a tough guy, don't be a fool. the white house offers a very different description of what happened at that meeting. according to white house press secretary stephanie grisham quote the president was measured, factual, and decisive. she says that the speaker's decision to walk out of the meeting was quote baffling and the white house points out that other democratic members of congress that were at the meeting stayed behind until it was over. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. from that to the impeachment showdown quickly moving forward with another key diplomat in the hot seat. >> u.s. ambassador to the european union is scheduled to testy today. gordon sondland was negotiating with ukraine along with rudy giuliani even though ukraine is not part of the eu. >> sondland texted another official saying there was no quid pro quo as the president withheld aid to ukraine while pressing for an investigation

into joe biden and his son. but he's expected to say those were the president's words, not his. abc news has learned the president's former adviser on russia testified this week that sondland was a potential national security risk. it was a wet commute for us into the office overnight, a nasty nor'easter is slamming the northeast this morning with drenching downpours and raging winds. >> the heaviest rain hit during the evening rush flooding streets and highways, knocking -- gusting winds have knocked out power to tens of thousands from new york to new hampshire. and the storm is blamed for a deadly crash outside philadelphia. three people were killed when a van rolled over on a slick wet r sws the storm on the move, intensifying as it takes aim at northern new england. high wind watches and warnings are in effect from eastern pennsylvania to maine. federal health officials say the dangerous and deadly effects of a mysterious vaping-related lung disease are increasing

every day. the latest numbers from the cdc show the illness has killed at least 31 people in 22 states, about 1,300 people have been affected. the victims have been as young as 17 and as old as 75. a top cdc official told congress yesterday those numbers are expected to be considerably worse when new figures come out this week. gm workers could soon be heading back to work after a 31-day strike. the automaker union leaders have reached a tentative deal for a new contract. details of the proposed four-year deal haven't been fully released but workers are expected to receive 3% to 4% raises or lump-sum bonuses. 49,000 united auto workers must also approve the deal. >> i'm a little apprehensive because i don't know what outcome it's going to be. >> i haven't heard anything about the temporary workers, anything about our jobs going to mexico and china. those are going to be two of the big sticking points. >> it will probably take two weeks to finalize the deal. this has been the union's longest work stoppage against gm

in nearly 50 years. a california businesswoman was sentenced to three weeks in prison for her role in the college admissions scandal. prosecutors say she paid $15,000 to manipulate her son's a.c.t. exam. she's also accused of falsely listing her son as black or hispanic on college applications. clapper is the ninth parent sentenced in the college admissions case and the eighth parent to get prison time. crews at the scene of last weekend's deadly building collapse in new orleans have moved from rescue into recovery mode. officials say all indications are the one worker still unaccounted for did not survive. one body was pulled from the rubble sunday, another has been located but not removed. investigators say no signs of life have inveion in murde an american lawyer in the island nation of micronesia southwest of hawaii. >> rochelle bergeron and her dog were gunned down in what the governor calls a senseless and heinous act.

>> a 73-year-old retired librarian taking part in a community safety workshop was shot and killed by an officer doing a demonstration with a gun that he shot was loaded with blanks. that former officer will get no jail time. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> reporter: florida prosecutors agreed the officer seen here in street clothes during a community demonstration will serve no jail time for the accidental shooting death of this woman, 73-year-old mary knowlton. her family says it feels like authorities let them down. >> i don't know, it doesn't seem like we've got justice. >> reporter: in 2016 the retired librarian was randomly selected from the crowd for this use of force exercise in the parking lot of the police station where former police officer lee cole was pretending to be the criminal and she the police officer. this is the moment when he fires four shots. they were supposed to be blanks. but they weren't.

she died at the hospital. since the accident, police in the department have been blaming each other for the gun safety mistakes. in court cole had tears in his eyes. he agreed to ten years of probation, hugged and kissed his wife, then walked away. >> had we got an apology from the police or lee, that would have made a hell of a big difference in how we felt. >> reporter: a police captain resigned and the police chief was eventually fired, but a lieutenant who was also caught up in this remains on the force. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. a milwaukee mom got a pleasant surprise and a present during a traffic stop. >> officer kevin zimmerman pulled over andrela jackson because of a problem with her registration. he noticed her two young children didn't have car seats. instead of a ticket, officer zimmerman bought her two car seats and installed them. >> i see lots of accidents. seen kids get hurt, seen them get killed. something as simple as a car seat properly installed could have helped them out if not saved their life.

in san francisco. others collapsing just like they did in santa cruz. debris killing three people there. a section of the san fran-oakland bay bridge collapsing. >> two cars that were on the upper deck when the bridge collapsed, they fell below. >> reporter: in west oakland, 42 people losing their lives when a double-deck section of interstate 880 crumbled. president george h.w. bush surveying the devastation caused by what would forever be called the loma prieta earthquake. >> sad in some ways, yet genuine appreciation for the way this community is pulling together. >> reporter: in all, 63 people were killed and another 3,700 injured. experts saying that number would have been much worse had it not been for the world series game being played in san francisco. the giants taking on the oakland athletics, which meant at the time fans were more likely off of those bridges and roads that collapsed. 30 years later, that part of the bay bridge has been completely replaced. the damaged freeways and buildings rebuilt. and today, 16.4 million people

we're getting new details about why a former aide was concerned about sondland's conduct. this morning a key figure in the impeachment inquiry preparing to testify. the ambassador to the european union, gordon sondland, will appear before three house committees. now abc news has learned the president's former top russia adviser, fiona hill, believed sondland was a potential national security risk because of his inexperience. sondland is a trump mega donor with no diplomatic experience. hill told house investigators during her testimony that she was concerned about sondland's cell phone use, according to abc's mary bruce. >> hill said he would frequently use his personal cell phone for diplomatic affairs, potentially leaving him vulnerable and reportedly took it upon himself to invite foreign officials to the white house. david hill was so concerned that she reportedly raised this issue with white house intelligence officials. >> reporter: sondland defended the president against accusations that trump was withholding military aid to ukraine until the ukrainians agreed to investigate joe biden and his son. in text messages already turned over to house investigators, america's top diplomat in ukraine, bill taylor, writes, i
