[ laughter ] and frankly that sounds pretty good to me. and you do have to admit that between me and meryl at least we have had some victories. and e retired navy admiral who,h oversaw the raid on osama bin laden is blasting trump. in a "new york times" op ed, william mcraven writes, if this president doesn't demonstrate the leadership that america needs both domestically and abroad, thin it's ti abroad, then it's time for a new person in the oval office, republican, democrat or independent. the sooner the better. the president criticized mcraven in the past calling him a hillary clinton supporter. aides are scrambling to distance themselves from an astounding admission from chief of staff mick mulvaney. he acknowledged a quid pro quo with ukraine and told reporters to get over it. later mulvaney claimed his re.d mitted something

the president has been denying for weeks, that there was a quid pro quo when president trump asked the leader of ukraine to investigate his political opponents. overnight, president trump still slamming the impeachment inquiry. >> and now they continue the outrageous impeachment witch hunt with nothing. with nothing. >> reporter: as his acting chief of staff mick mulvaney appears into. >> i have news for everybody. get over it. there's going to be political influence in foreign policy. >> reporter: acknowledging the trump administration did withhold military aid to ukraine in part to pressure ukraine to investigate the democrats. >> let's be clear. what you just described is a quid pro quo. it is funding will not flow unless the investigation into the democratic server happens as well. >> we do that all the time in foreign policy.

the ukrainians wanted a meeting with the president, they would have to issue a statement promising to investigate democrats and the company that hunter biden had been doing business with. this is all happening as energy secretary rick perry handed in his resignation. he has emerged as a key witness in the house impeachment inquiry. both he and mulvaney have until the end of the day today to hand over documents related to the ukraine they were subpoenaed for. elizabeth and kenneth? >> ines, thank you. an intense gun battle crippled the streets in mexico looking for the son of el chapo. mexican security forces say they were on patrol when they came under heavy fire. the shooting lasted for hours until soldiers eventually found el chapo's son, but they were outmatched by heavily armed cartel gunmen and they decided to let him go. now time for a look at your weather this friday morning. >> another tropical system in the making here across the gulf of mexico impacting parts of southern louisiana in towards florida.

several people were injured when a commuter plane ran off a runway in alaska. look at that sight there. however, no members of the high school swim team aboard were hurt. it stopped with its nose hanging over a rocky embankment over the bering sea. the plane carried 38 people in total on a flight from anchorage. the cause of this accident is not known this morning. president trump has made a surprise announcement, saying that the next year's group of 7 summit will take place at his own golf resort in miami.cricsla calling it the most blatant example yet that trump is trying to profit from his presidency. but acting white house chief of staff mick mulvaney is dismissing the criticism, saying it's a great idea. >> doral was by far and away, far and away the best physical facility for this meeting. in fact, i was talking to one of the advance teams when they came back and said, what was it like,

and he said, mick, you're not going to believe this but it's almost like they built this facility to host this type of event. so they're doing this at cost as a result it's going to be dramatically cheaper for to us do it at doral compared to the other final sites that we had. >> well, the "washington post" examined financial disclosure reports filed by the president and say they show that they shot struggling financially. new york city lawmakers have approved a plan to close a notorious jail. rikers island will be replaced by four smaller facilities by 2026. lawmakers say it's no longer needed because of falling crime rates and criminal justice reforms. critics say the move is a threat to public safety. well, the world's longest commercial flight will soon take off. the qantas flight will travel from sydney, australia to new york. the 10,000-mile trip will take almost 20 hours. qantas is hoping to launch the route by 2022. and so what's happening this weekend? the airline is using this

we we are back with this dramatic subway rescue in buenos aires, argentina. a woman was accidentally shoved onto the tracks by a fainting m. has to n e aks away from the woman. passengers then jumped onto those tracks to help her. the woman and the man who fainted were treated by paramedics. a new video shows just how amazing that utah train rescue was. the view from inside the train shows that moment of impact there. from outside we can see the utah state trooper racing up an embankment. he pulled the driver out of his vehicle just before the train smashed into it. the hero cop says he didn't think. he just did his job. >> wow. well, oscar-winning actress helen hunt is recovering this morning after a frightening auto accident in los angeles. >> another vehicle smashed into

her suv in an intersection and it flipped over. abc's kayna whitworth has more. >> reporter: it happened in a matter of seconds. this surveillance video obtained by tmz showing the harrowing car crash. actress helen hunt in a black suv that's flipped on its side. bystanders rushing to the rescue. zaren thomas pulled her out of the car. >> i climbed up on top, opened the door, just told her take my hand, take my hand, get everybody out the car. >> reporter: the accident happened just before 5:00 in los angeles on wednesday. according to law enforcement, hunt was in the back seat. the 56-year-old actress won an oscar for her role in "as good as it gets." >> what good does that ever get anybody? >> reporter: she's recovering at home after being released from the hospital. now, while she was shaken, hunt's spokesperson says she suffered no major injuries, and the los angeles police department is currently investigating the crash. kayna whitworth, abc news, los angeles.

last week's power shutoffs. >> jobina fortson is live in one of the cities that will likely be watching the meeting with a lot of interest, cupertino. >> hi. good morning. this power shutoff has been described by many as a failure. and with people not being able to access the website and so many other issues, thousands felt the negative impacts of this emergency power shutoff including this neighborhood in cupertino. now the california public utilities commission will hold this meeting with top pg&e executives today. that will be happening at 1:00. here's more on what we're expecting to see. the cpuc wants pg&e to address the mistakes and operational gaps identified in the latest public safety power shutoff and give them lessons the utility company learned so they can assure they're not repeated this meeting is supposed to make sure cpuc commissioners and staff have as much information as
