news to build a better bay area, this is "abc 7 mornings." >> good morning, everyone. happy sunday, october 20th. i'm liz kruetz. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, liz. we are starting out with fog around the bay area. here is a look at live doppler 7. looks patchy but when we go in closer you can see visibility at the coast at about 2 miles. napa down to nothing. livermore a little patchy fog as well and temperatures in the low 40s for santa rosa, mid 50s around fremont and looking at that trend to be warmer than yesterday by 13 degrees warmer than the north bay. partly cloudy skies throughout the morning hours. a lot of sunshine today and a few degrees warmer.

that weather system has moved out of here and we're looking at numbers climbing through the upper 70s in our inland valleys, low 70s around the bay and cool at our coast. >> sounds good. happening today a sold out crowd will get a chance to see former first lady and secretary of state hill harry clinton and her daughter chelsea. they will be available to talk about the book they wrote together that celebrates the women who have inspired them throughout their lives and answer questions from the audience. the event starts at 1:30 this afternoon. basically we were told that someone hit a hydrant up there and it's flooding all of stern. >> a mess on the uc berkeley campus as a car crashes into a fire hydrant sending water shooting into the air. it was a long night for many students. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the details. >> reporter: it started when the red car smashed into a fire

hydrant on first avenue near highland place. the tow truck operator said the driver had been arrested, a suspected drunk driver. >> a car ran into the eme e firehouse outlet and i think it broke and shooting up water like anything else just dumping a lot of water on to the streets. >> reporter: gallons of water rushed downhill and directly into stern hall and foothill. at foothill students in buildings 4 through 9 got a text telling them to evacuate. >> my building was dry. i didn't think i would have to leave. when i left the r.a. said don't go back inside. >> reporter: the real damage is inside foothill building six. 20 students have been displaced because of water damage to their dorm room. cal representatives are scrambling to find them a place to stay on campus. >> people had to be evacuated and as of right now they're not telling us information when we

can get back in. apparently rooms are flooding and water coming through the walls. >> reporter: students grabbed what they could and left. >> i have my backpack with my laptop, books. i was doing some studying and i just plan to continue doing that. >> reporter: by the way, there is a gaming competition supposed to take place here this morning. that has been canceled. at uc berkeley, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. a controversial billboard by a candidate running for mayor of san francisco has many neighbors asking some questions. some of you called it disrespectful. abc 7 news reporter luz pena spoke to the candidate who paid for four billboards all across the city. >> reporter: normally this wall covered in art is the reason for many to stare, but the neighbors noticed something different. this billboard. >> i think it's quite interesting. i live in this area. hopefully doesn't cause too much controversial. >> reporter: the billboard has her feet up smoking and holding a stack of bills, a man carrying a girl, and a quote reads stop

slavery and human trafficking and says vote ellen zhou for mayor. >> who is the woman wearing the red dress. >> i believe it's symbolized for london breed. >> you believe or that was the intention of it? >> i believe that was the intention. >> do you think that's disrespectful? >> no, not at all. >> reporter: zhou is a san francisco social worker who also ran for mayor last year. she told us she didn't mean for the billboard to be controversial and people to focus on her message. >> i will declare an emergency in my higher level of care for people to come in and scleen clean the streets, arrest the drug dealers and for the services they need. >> reporter: zhou says she wants streetand pvide housing for he teachers and workers and says sorry to depict mayor breed this way. >> this symbolizes a mayor

talking about change and thinking about change, but not doing about the change. >> reporter: many residents see this as disrespectful. >> it's unfair depiction of london breed. >> reporter: others are curious. >> it makes me want to know who ellen zhou is. >> reporter: in a statement the campaign office of the mayor responded in part, this blatantly racist and sexist ad has no place in our political discourse or our city. now there are a total of six candidates running for mayor in san francisco and the general election will take place november 5th. back to the billboard it will be up for the next three weeks, luz pena, abc 7 news. in the east bay a ceremony in remembrance of the 1991 fire storm that killed 25 people, injured 150 and destroyed nearly 3300 homes in the oakland hills. yesterday abc 7 news was in oakland at the emergency preparedness exhibit center where dozens of residents, firefighters and others affected by the fire shared memories of the four tragic days 28 years

ago. >> everywhere i looked over 360 degrees, there was something burning. my thought was that nature has decided to punch us in the face and until the wind stops blowing, she's going to keep punching us. we have no chance. the tragedy of that day brought about a paradigm shift in the ways members of the oakland fire department think and react to fires in the hills. >> the tunnel fire as cal fire dubbed it burned more than 1500 acres. the oakland fire department said it's evolved for the better through training, technology and mutual aid system to be more prepared for such an event. and if you are one of the thousands of people affected by california wildfires you have until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow to file a claim with pg&e to help cover your losses. up to two-thirds of the estimated 100,000 eligible people have yet to fill out the three paige claim form. the forms are crucial to release billions pg&e have been ordered to set aside for fire victims as part of the utility's bankruptcy plan. we put a link to the claim form

on abc7news.com. mother nature remains restless in the bay area. another earthquake rattled the region yesterday. it was a minor quake that struck near cupertino. it was a magnitude 2.8. pretty small, but we did receive reports that people felt it, some of you tweeted at me some photos. days after an earthquake measuring 4.5 in magnitude hit the east bay. and this recent quake -- these quakes have served as a good reminder we are in earthquake country. you can still watch our documentary "the earthquake effect" that looks on loma preita and gives a glimpse into the future. get it anywhere from where you get abc 7 from our website and the app. a survivor of a mass shooting at a florida high school joined forces with local activists calling for an end to gun violence. abc 7 news was at berkeley high school when car lita rodriguez spoke. believes focusing on what young people have in common can tackle

social isolation and reduce violence of all kinds. >> it's not about our skin color, the place where we come from, our differences. %-pe speak out our stories can come together into one and build a common bridge. >> rodriguez survived the shooting at marjory stoneman douglas high school. 1 people died in february of last year. happening today, it's the last chance to enjoy presidio picnic in san francisco. dozens of food trucks have been at the main food ground since march. there are plenty of other activities including yoga classes, lawn games, photo booths and live music. the picnic runs from 11:00 to 4:00 this afternoon. a sign that summer is officially ended, but it's going to start feeling like summer again. >> good thing it's today.

welcome back. a live look from our exploratorium camera. the salesforce tourre. nine floors of it lit up. 55 degrees in san francisco right now. a degree warmer than yesterday at this time. meantime new developments as president trump's plan to hold the next group of seven meetings at his florida golf resort. last night on twitter he announced he will no longer be holding the gather at doral in 2020. mr. trump said his administration will begin searching for a new location including potentially camp david. some had accused the president of using the office to enrich himself. and coming up this "this week with george stephanopoulos" chief anchor george stephanopoulos speaks exclusively with secretary of state mike pompeo. you can watch the full interview on "this week" at 8:00 on abc 7. and on the november 5th ballot the race for incumbent d.a. gasgown was not seeking

re-election resigned yesterday, but one of the candidates running for his spot was sworn in as interim d.a. bit mayor london breed. it's been kriz criticized as a political ploy. >> district attorney. >> district attorney. >> for the city and county of san francisco. congratulations. >> thank you. >> reporter: with all the pomp and circumstance and a bit of controversy, candidate for district attorney suzy loftus was sworn in as interim district attorney three weeks before the alexis. mayor london breed swearing her in following the d.a.'s sudden resignation effective friday. >> despite what happens at this upcoming alexis, my goal is to make sure that we have strong leadership in this office. >> reporter: loftus got to work. >> i'm available [ inaudible ]. >> reporter: loftus, a former prosecutor and past president of the city's police commission will make crime prevention a priority. >> san francisco deserves a world-class law office that can

abc 7 news. to build a better bay area we highlight stories of hope and positivity. it has been shown that pets can help people heal from emotional and physical injuries but not just dogs that possess this ability. reporter leeann melendez visited a stable where horses are doing the same thing. >> the signs in mill valley suggest there are several trails to follow but only one points the way to a dusty road where anyone entering is warned you're living on horse time. >> now you're annie oakley. >> yeah. >> reporter: jean jones is a cancer survivor who saw herself as an unlikely candidate to take up riding. ironically cancer helped her overcome the fear of change. >> we start with with the >> i felt if i could get on a horse at 67 years old and successfully learn how to ride it, i can do anything at this

point. she's clean today. she's nice. >> reporter: bonding with a horse like molly has had a calming effect on jones, which is the intention of the program called horses as healers. >> we don't have to be psychotherapists or anything else except let the women experience a relationship with an animal if you open your heart will walk right in. >> reporter: wanted that for their cancer patients and found miwok stables on tennessee valley road. >> it's on public land federal law says they must somehow serve the public. that's how horses as healers began. >> like pedalling a bike. keep going with your legs. >> reporter: the program brought in four women who had battled cancer. each of them had four sessions with their horses. >> i kind of expected we could find four people and not only did we find four participates we hve a wait list of ten

participants. >> reporter: for christina, it meant she no longer saw herself as a victim. >> you struggle with the fact that there's always somebody else in charge. the doctor is in charge, the nurse is in charge. and this is my way of being in charge of what i do during the day. >> reporter: the horses show them the power to heal and teach. >> i can do it. molly showed me i can. >> reporter: leeann melendez, abc 7 news. >> i love that story. happening today joins the walk to end type 1 diabetes. there will be two walks starting at 11:00 this morning. one at great meadow at fort mason at san francisco and the other at bishop ranch in san ramon. the goal's organization jdrf is to raise $1 million to fight type one diabetes. funds raised supports research to find treatment and a cure. a check of our weekend weather now. meteorologist lisa argen tracking the forecast. >> good morning to you.

here's a look at live doppler 7 where we've had a little bit of fog floating around, but temperatures over into the east bay in the low 50s. looking at 51 in oakland and fremont, 55 in san francisco, 43 in santa rosa, and it's 51 down around morgan hill. as we look at san francisco pretty good visibility. a sunny and mild afternoon on the way and it will be much warmer this week and looking at that elevated fire danger. really late wednesday into thursday. high pressure builds in all week long, but it's not until late wednesday into early thursday morning the winds start gusting in the upper elevations. as we look at the next several hours, we've got a good deal of cloud cover to the north of us, high clouds from time to time, breeze picking up throughout the afternoon today, at the coast the onshore flow and looking at partly to mostly sunny continues today. let's jump ahead into tuesday. where you notice the numbers are

getting warmer right along the coast we're in the 60s, barely, 70 at our beaches, upper 70s across the bay and head inland we have 90s. that wednesday time period, this is when the winds increase. east bay 70s, san francisco continues into thursday, and we will be looking at those winds by late wednesday into thursday, perhaps gusting over 30 miles an hour. we're picking this up tuesday, wednesday afternoon, 2:00, and notice the arrows from the north and northeast stopping at 3:00 in the morning on thursday, winds up to 40 miles an hour there. those offshore winds, through sonoma, napa and the delta and as we get into the later part of your thursday it begins to dial back, but here we are 11:00 in the morning, we still have the strong northeasterly wind in the upper elevation. it does lighten up into thursday evening but the national weather service as we get 24 hours out

could issue a red flag warning. today looks nice. temperatures climbing into the upper 60s are san francisco, look at the beach, half moon bay, 72, upper 70s in the north bay with 74 in fremont and 78 today in concord. nice afternoon lot of sunshine, temperatures around average. 60s at the coast, low 70s around the bay, upper 70s inland and the warming trend continues into monday and tuesday with near 70 at the coast and then as we get into the low 80s by tuesday, inland valleys will be flirting with the upper 80s to near 90s. wednesday night thursday time period those winds are looking somewhat gusty. as we go through these three or four days of the warming and drying scenario, it's a prolonged period. four or five days and you add on the winds on top of it, it's especially if not that strong they may issue it any way because it's been that length of time where the humidity has been

your side pointing out those terms. >> i don't worry about the earthquake insurance aho running out of money. >> reporter: an insurance consumer advocate doubts the cea will run low on cash even after a big quake. the authority has $17 billion to pay out claims. that's far less than the damage caused by big quakes like north ridge, loma preita and the san francisco earthquake. still cea says that's plenty of money to cover all claims from a major disaster. that's because very few california homeowner carry earthquake insurance. only about 1 milpitlion homes a covered through cea. >> we don't cover the whole state of california. >> reporter: we spoke by phone with the chief executive glen pomro. >> you have to buy a policy to be covered by that policy. over a million homes that we provide that $17 billion of protection for. >> reporter: policies can be

lim was a judge for a seafood chowder competition during wharf fest 2019. nine restaurants competed. a benefit concert was played by the side deal a band including members from train and sugar ray. part of the proceeds will benefit wharf cares to help san francisco's homeless along the northern waterfront. pretty jealous she got to try the clamp choudser. still to come, long flights and then a flight qantas airways tried out, it landed but wait until you hear how long it was in the air for. post-tropical cyclone leaves a path of destruction on florida's gulf coast. some of the damage it left behind.

meteorologist lisa argen. y, >> good morning to you. we are just a little bit more warmer this morning if you can believe that. temperatures in the low to mid 50s. in the north bay 40s. 53 in san pablo. we are looking at the warming trend starting today. visibility reduced in napa and along the coast with patchy fog throughout the day. we'll see a few high clouds coming down from the north but mostly sunny and by 1:00 we're in the 60s even some 70s arriving in our inland east bay. 3:00 partly sunny along the peninsula but low to mid 70s. just patchy fog tonight, much of the week fog free. winds will shift and a warming trend in a few minutes. hong kong is seeing its 20th straight weekend of pro-democracy demonstrations. huge crowds are marching. one of the tourist districts as the month's long political crisis continues. it's really an illegal march as

protesters ignored a police ban on the rally. police have launched water cannons and demonstrators damaged shops by using spray paint. see that video there of that blue paint. train stations at least seven train stations have been closed because of the protests. and nester made landfall yesterday leaving behind a path of destruction. here's reporter kenneth moten with a look at some of the damage caused by the storm. >> reporter: as naster traveled towards the gulf coast officials not taking chances, amid fears could bring down the two cranes damaged in last weekend's hard rock construction collapse. the demolition has been postponed until today. >> this is a dangerous building. the cranes are, you know, still in a precarious situation and their timeline is as moved and we've said safety is number one.

>> reporter: nester made landfall saturday. spawning several tornadoes and sending debris flying in parts of the tampa bay area. strong winds flipping over this semi truck. bringing down power lines, knocking out power to thousands. this rv tossed on its side. dozens of homes damaged. this church flattened. dangerous storm surge flooded streets and businesses. nester coming one year after michael a category 5 hurricane struck florida's pan handle. residents still struggling to recover from the devastation. gayle evans has been living in this trailer sin her home was destroyed by mikele. >> i lost everything. >> reporter: nester expected to continue moving up the east coast bringing heavy rain to the mid-atlantic states before moving offshore by monday. kenneth moten, abc news, new york. british prime minister boris johnson plans to push ahead to leave the european union by the end of this month despite yesterday's vote by his fellow

lawmakers delaying the move. thousands protested outside london's house of parliament. you can see the images demanding the united kingdom remain in the eu. johnson said there were no new negotiations with the eu, slightly more than half of british voters approved leaving three years ago but their leaders are divided. >> it's not a good deal for our country and future generations will feel the impact. >> further delay would be bad for this country and bad for our european union and democracy. >> johnson leads the ruling conservative party and some of his fellow people voted for the deal. johnson hopes some members of the labor party will back brexit. 50 travelers can now say they're part of aviation history. they flew aboard the longest commercial flight. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas

has the details. >> reporter: the longest commercial flight is now on the ground in australia. this is video of qantas 7879 landing in sydney after 19 hours and 16 minutes in the air. the flight was nonstop from new york to sydney. that's the distance of nearly 10,000 miles. it took off friday night new york time and landed sunday morning sydney time. a qantas was using this flight to research whether pilots, cabin crews and passengers can deal with that much time in the air and with jet lag once they get on the ground. qantas plans another research flight in just a few months. this time from london to sydney. it will be about 500 miles longer. >> that's a long flight. another horse has died at santa anita park. 34 have now died at the southern california racetrack dating back to late last year. 34. that horse, the recent one that

died, suffered an open fracture of one of its legs during yesterday's fifth race. santa anita's vet ded to euthanize the horse. experts will conduct a necropsy on the horse. animal rights groups have called for a suspension of racing until more is learned about the horse deaths. a scary moment yesterday, the university of oklahoma's sooner schooner flipped over. the wagon was making a sharp turn when it happened. you can see a couple people got thrown out and landed on the ground. three people ended up getting checked out for injuries but none of them were serious. the two ponies are okay as well following the accident. still ahead on "abc 7 mornings," halloween is just around the corner and we have just the place to make some memories. and here is a live look of the golden gate bridge. pretty dark out there still. it is 5:35. about 55 degrees in san

and halloween but cut down your own christmas sttree, egg hunts for easter and a trip back to the wild west for summer. check the website before you go. the cool thing is parking and amission are free. the kids can enjoy the atmosphere. if you want to pate for a train ride you can do that or purchase a hand stamp and get unlimited access to the fun. people of all ages will enjoy a day on the farm but ideally, 14 months to 7 years old probably the sweet spot. these four-legged friends are the only animals allowed on the farm except for service animals. plenty of snacks for purchase, hot food or bring your own. the pumpkins aren't just for decorations. see one you like or maybe two, make it yours. be sure to pay for it on the way out. we are on a farm but there are rest rooms and thank goods ness.

to 40 miles an hour. that's going to bring the relative humidity down below 20%. without any low clouds and fog, we're very dry and you add on the heat we will cool off during the overnight hours. but not enough to help us out. and with those offshore winds, it could be a recipe for, you know, some very dry red flag conditions. 75 today in san jose, lot of sunshine, 74 in milpitas, 73 in loss gatss to. millbrae 73, redwood city, on the coast mid to upper 60s as you head towards oh, perhaps daly city, 65, 70 south city and in the north bay, numbers will be in the mid 60s. 78 in sonoma. nice afternoon here. looking at a lot of sunshine and over into the east bay about 73 san leandro. berkeley checking in at 71. fremont 74. you head inland we have 78 in

concord and about 4:00 this afternoon mid 70s for you in livermore. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. numbers coming up a few degrees, more sunshine today, 60s, low 70s to upper 70s and by tomorrow, about eight degrees warmer inland. six degrees warmer around the bay. and then by the middle of the week that trend really gets increased as we have those offshore winds boosting the afternoon highs. drying out the atmosphere right after friday. also looks like a cooling trend will get under way saturday and sunday. and the winds not that strong, but strong enough and it's october. >> we are crossing our fingers. thanks. in sports both the 49ers and raiders are in action on the road this morning. the silver and black faced aaron rogers and the packers at lambeau field. kickoff is at 10:00. and the 5-0 niners take on the washington redskins at fedex field also at 10:00 a.m. next saturday cal will play 13th ranked utah on the road.
