we are back with this dramatic rescue from the florida everglades. three people were trapped in a swamp after their offroad vehicle broke down. they were on top of their vehicle waving their hands when they were spotted by the collier county sheriff's helicopter. they were airlifted out. authorities say they were cold and tired but safe. >> thank goodness for that. federal investigators say the deadly collapse of a pedestrian bridge in miami was the result of a faulty design and lax oversight. the bridge fell onto an eight-lane road next to florida international university in march last year killing six people. >> ntsb said errors led to unusually severe cracking in the concrete which should have prompted the road to be closed. the agency blamed designers, engineers, builders, and the school for failing to realize

the money, cameron said he had to do something to get the drugs his body craved. in the past he's experimented with robbery, putting on a mask, a drug-fueled raid on a liquor store, then a motel where an elderly woman is behind the desk. she only has $20. but he takes it. >> probably the lowest point. >> reporter: now he's going to target drug dealers, and he brings a weapon. how close did you come to killing someone? >> i don't know. >> reporter: at this time he is also scrambling to learn a new trade, trafficking drugs across the country. crystal meth in bath salts, hidden in gift baskets. his communications are in code, his equipment encrypted. a knock on the door at a hotel in new york city. >> i open the door to a central casting dea agent. that was the moment that i knew that it was over.

>> reporter: his name is now beneath a prison number. though his lawyers did manage to get him a sentence of only five years, and he starts out in minimum security. about a year in, he is caught flagrantly using heroin. a furious judge hauls him back in court. >> my sentence was just doubled from five to ten years. overwhelmed, i pass out. >> reporter: for the first time since he was 13 years old, cameron douglas has long stretches without drugs. was it prison that turned you around? >> it was getting away from addiction and allowing me to begin to see things more clearly. and then, you know, the constant love and support of my family. never giving up on me. >> reporter: i wondered if he had a final question for his dad. >> i guess i want to know if you -- if you truly gave up -- if you truly thought that i

the kurds their positions will be destroyed and they must pull back further. the new deal allows turkey to keep this area they've already taken and forces the kurdish fighters to pull back from more territory to the east and west along the border. president erdogan trying to resettle millions of refugees from turkey in that region. the fate of hundreds of thousands of kurdish civilians already uprooted now in the balance, the u.n. warning of a looming humanitarian crisis. with american partners pulling out, the kurds may have little choice but to accept the terms of this day. in days turkish and russian forces will patrol the border, sealing the kurdish defeat. after years of civil war, putin is helping syrian president assad reclaim his country. kurdish forces say they've already withdrawn from large parts of northern syria, although this deal is an even bigger concession. but i think many people there feel in order to save lives, they may have no choice. james longman, abc news in

it's burned almost 1,000 acres and it's threatening homes. at least one house has been damaged and some residents have been evacuated. officials also have closed a nearby airport used by private planes. an investigation is under way at penn state university into the death of a high school senior who was visiting the campus last weekend. police say 17-year-old jack schoenig went into cardiac arrest and died at an off-campus house. >> members of a school fraternity live at the residence but it's not the chapter's official campus house. the fraternity has been temporarily suspended. the death comes two years after penn state student timothy piazza died after a night of hazing and drinking at a different fraternity house. two students at university of connecticut have been suspended after shouting a racial slur outside student apartments, screaming the slur nearly two weeks ago. the two white 21-year-olds say they were playing a game in which they dared each other to scream offensive words. both could face to a year in prison. former president jimmy carter remains in a hospital after falling at his georgia
