kincaid fire in sonoma county as pg&e prepares for another round of outages. we have live team coverage. and air quality concerns. what experts want you to know as heavy smoke drifts into the bay area today. once again, good morning, everybody. it's friday, october 25th. as you can imagine, lots of breaking news to get to. >> from the fire to the impending power shutoffs, we have life team coverage. amy hollyfield is in sonoma county with the latest on the kincaid fire. lauren martinez is looking ahead to the outages that could be coming tomorrow. first lisa argen is tracking the wind and we have a spare the air alert today. >> that'right. good morning. hi, everyone. looking at some hazy conditions out there. we have air quality indexes across the bay area that particulate matter over 100. so looking at some conditions that if you're going to have -- if you have some issues all around the north bay, you'll be experiencing some of those across the bay area for
5:01 am
compromised folks, maybe the elderly, the young. as we look at temperatures now in geyserville, it is cooler. the relative humidity is up to 21%. not great, but betterment the winds are much lighter out there. so we're looking at all across the bay 40% to 50%, getting back in line with where we should be. it will be another warm day today. not as warm as yesterday. the winds will be lighter. it's going to be a better fall afternoon. 3:00 temperatures will be in the upper 70s to the mid 80s up in the north bay. another warm one out there. above average. as we go through the afternoon, numbers will drop off into the 70s. a nice friday night on the way. we have a nice day to enjoy before we get into those watches and warnings which will go into effect by late tomorrow night for the gusty winds and the high fire danger. >> thank you. good morning. so we're taking a live look at the golden gate bridge right
5:02 am
now. everything is smooth there. it's been that way all morning. we expect that it will be like that as we continue on throughout the morning commute. first now i want to go to an issue that has popped up in san lorenzo. it involves three vehicles, including a big rig. started out as a stall. looks like two cars crashed into the big rig. this is southbound 880 under northbound 238. this is going to be a slowdown for quite some time because it appears the big rig is out of gas. speeds are down to 12 miles per hour. to our drive times here this morning, richmond to san rafael bridge, 7 minutes. san mateo prij, bridge, 14 minu. b dumbarton bridge, 9 minutes. the fire has spread to 16,000 acres. this as whipping winds are expected this weekend. cal fire says 49 structures have
5:03 am
been destroyed. more are threatened. the fire is 5% contained this morning. we've also learned that a pg&e transmission line failed around the same time that the fire started. >> mandatory evacuations are in effect east of highway 128 to geyserville. you can see it in that yellow shaded area. it is a race against time right now to get the fire under control before strong winds come this weekend. >> amy hollyfield ise in sonoma with more. >> good morning. there's so much destruction here. of those 49 structures, a half dozen of them were homes on geyser road. fire just destroyed them. we are not expecting much wind today, so a lot of the smoke is
5:04 am
just lingering. evacuation orders are in place. this wind-whipped fire spread to quickly down the mountain and into alexander valley. they say it grew by 1,000 acres an hour. they will send more firefighters to the scene today. they're worried about the fire burning now and also focused on this weekend and the next wind event expected here. >> we are up against the clock not only with the continually drying fuel, but the winds predicted over the next couple of days are expected to be worse than we had the other night. >> river rock casino is part of the evacuation area. the casino was not damaged in the fire, but the fire did come very close to the building. no one has been hurt in this fire. no one was killed or has been reported missing. no word on when the evacuation orders will be lifted. amy hollyfield, abc7 news.
5:05 am
>> what a picture behind you. thanks to you. as we've told you, the kincaid fire burned homes in geyserville and forced thousands to flee. for many it's a chilling reminder of the north bay fires two years ago. the kincaid fire forced the evacuation of about 2,000 residents from geyserville and the hills to the east. many of the same people who endured the devastating north bay fires of 2017. >> the sheriff's office wants to acknowledge this is an emotional time for many people.'s only tw fires that devastated our community. >> there's still a lot of trauma in sonoma county from the fires of two years ago, waking up to a day like today brings back a lot of memories. >> firefighters from throughout northern california have come in to help. the goal now is to get it mostly contained before the next round of high winds is expected this weekend. the bay area air quality management district says heavy smoke from the fire is expected to drift into the area today. even if you can't see it it does
5:06 am
not mean it's not a health hazard. >> particulate matter pollution is invisible to the naked eye because the particles are so small, they can bypass your lung's natural defense systems, just because you can't see the smoke doesn't mean you won't be impacted. >> children, seniors, people with asthma are most vulnerable. doctors recommend that people stay inside when it's smoky, avoid exercising outdoors and make sure you use air filters. the district declared a spare the air day today. if you want to learn more about air quality, smoke and the kincaid fire, download the abc 7 news app. you'll find all the headlines plus easy access to the weather forecasts. we also send out breaking news alerts through the app. it's how you'll find out the latest as it happens. as the fire danger increases, pg&e is preparing for another round of power shutoffs. >> all of this will impact people here in the bay area this weekend. jobina joins us at the live desk. look at that map. a lot of yellow there. >> so much yellow. pg&e says it has restored 93% of

customers impacted by the power shutoff. now officials are warning of another public safety shutoff that could start as soon as tomorrow. i have here the ease bay behit me. we have piedmont, orinda, lafayette, moraga, alamo, alamo,, valley, fairview. if i go here and zoom out a little bit, you can see just how much this orange area covers. the it swallows up the sport bay. this could be the biggest shutoff we've seen so far. pg&e's ceo and president bill johnson said it would likely affect the peninsula, east bay and north bay area. no word yet on how many people could be affected. winds are forecast to gust between 40 and 60 miles per hour over most elevated terrain in northern california. he says the utility is at elevated potential for a new shutdown and 8 of the 9 service

zones for pg&e. some areas may see peak gusts of 70 to 80 miles per hour. officials say the possible outage could stretch into monday. let's continue our coverage of those power outages. >> lauren martinez is joining us live from orinda. good morning. >> good morning. more than 120,000 contra costa county residents could be impacted by the shutoffs that start tomorrow night. the list includes walnut creek, moraga, orinda, and lafayette. the outages are because of extreme fire conditions we're expected to see this weekend. >> we do think it will be the strongest offshore wind event this season by a large margin. if models are correct, possibly the strongest offshore winds we've seen in years. >> in alameda county 57,000 pg&e
5:09 am
customers could lose power as well. now, if you still need a way to get around, b.a.r.t. will still be up and running. they run on their own power supplies. so they'll still be on during an outage. these possible outages could start tomorrow at 10:00 p.m. and last until 2:00 p.m. on monday. i'm lauren martinez, abc7 news. all right. good morning to you. of course you've been hearing about our next system that is going to shut off a lot of power around the bay area. the difference with this system is that these have been upper level winds. the winds now will mix down to the valley. that's why so many other communities are involved. looking at the air quality today, right now we're not bad. once the winds get going things will get worse.
5:10 am
as you get through the afternoon, winds will continue to push the smoke down throughout the bay area. here's our fire danger index. starting this at 11:00 p.m. tomorrow night. you can see the areas up in the north bay. as we get to the overnight hours, it spreads westward to much of marin and then eastward, the diablo range, the santa cruz mountains, sunday morning it expands further. that's why we're so concerned. strong winds mixing down to the valley floors. we're talking about 15 to 30-mile-per-hour winds. gusting perhaps up to 75 miles per hour. this could last into monday. so some of those tree branches could be down in your neighborhood daughter to the winds winds. >> i want to show everyone a live picture of the bay bridge

toll plaza. there is a stalled car when you get on the opposite side of the toll plaza. it's off to the right hand shoulder. just want to give you a heads up as you head into the area. as we move into the tracy commute, things are slowing down th eeds a miles per hour. 37 and34 miles per hour as you move into the altamont pass. an update into our issue in san lorenzo involving the big rig and two cars. looks like the big rig was stalled on southbound 880 under northbound 238. those two cars ran into rig. they are getting towed. so it's getting very, very slow. all right. thanks. protecting yourself from wildfires smoke. >> we will likely have some drifting into the bay area today.

5:16 am
>> the fairgrounds is for livestock only though. people with regular pets can go across the street. if you have driven on highway 12 in kenwood you know there's a lot of wineries and restaurants there. many of them were without power shutdown.f the forced pg&e it was a slow day because of it. as we told you, pg&e is warning of another wind event tomorrow night into sunday morning which may require even more power shutoffs. that is bad news for wineries. chateau st. jean's manager said they have a generator which was purchased after the 2017 fires. the winery is known for hosting a lot of weddings and other events. >> actually bring in additional generators just for the various spaces around the property in case there can't support all of that. >> now across the street, st. anne's crossings's owner put

up a sign to let people know his winery is open for business. you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. >> meteorologist lisa argen is here tracking the latest. good morning. >> good morning. as you know, it has to do with the wind flow around here. those strong offshore winds is what we don't like in october. we have light winds now. they'll be switching around to an onshore component. that will drift the smoke into the bay area. we're looking at 9-mile visibility up in santa rosa with some haze. as we get to that onshore component mid afternoon, that's when we'll see some smoke drift across the bay and bring us poor air quality. as we look outside, it's clear with 50 in san ramon and dublin. 68 in san carlos. 60s in the city. low 50s to upper 50s up in napa. relative humidity, it's up into the comfortable region. 33% by fairfield.

on your side. you make sure the mask is above your nose and below your chin. it must have two straps. one strap goes above your ear, the other below your ear. and for it to be most effective, you should be clean-shaven unlike juan. if you have heart or lung issues, you should talk to a physician before you wear a mask. it may be obvious but the best thing you can do is g out of the area. get away from the smoke. if that's not possible, get indoors and close the windows. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. we spoke with a bay area quality management district and they say masks can give you a false sense of security and harm you in some cases. that's because when you take the mask on and off the particles get inside. so the best thing to do is stay indoors in a place with clean air as much as possible. >> at least 50,000 people have been ordered to evacuate from
