"gma" on the front lines with the firefighters battling the blazes. we're tracking the critical danger this morning, and for northern california, the worst is yet to come. breaking news, the anonymous author of a tell-all white house book reveals there were in frequent meetings with president trump.

good morning, america, everybody. christmas in october? >> merry christmas. i'm not ready for this. >> october. >> so you heard it right. we'll get to the bottom of those very early deals. they're coming ready or not. >> i totally get this. my kids have been wearing christmas pajamas for the last three weeks. they're definitely excited. a lot of serious news and we begin with the wildfire emergency in california. fires burning up and down the state scorching thousands of acres and forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate. those people hoping they have homes to return to. >> at least 12 large fires are burning across the state right now and let's go out to our team in california, and first up is matt gutman in santa clarita. good morning to you, matt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. you can tell the wind is absolutely ferocious. we've had gusts of 50 miles per hour here. that's why this house is engulfed. there are firefighters inside.

you can see them spraying it down from the inside. i want to show you why this is such a problem. this whole valley here, you can see those little lights. that is all fire and that wind is fueling it. it is absolutely ferocious and firefighters at this point don't know how many homes have caught fire even in this neighborhood. >> wow! >> reporter: overnight fires erupting in california, north and south. at least 50,000 people ordered from their homes north of los angeles where firefighters relentlessly battled the tick fire which exploded again this morning. highways on fire and neighborhoods scorched. traffic in a gridlock overnight thursday as thick black smoke filled the sky. panicked residents escaping with fires threatening to engulf roads. the fire torching homes like kindling. this fire is completely driven by the wind right now. multiple aircraft pounding the flames with water from above and

on the ground. we were on the front lines with those first responders. this is what firefighters go through. it is completely wet here. they're all choking because of the smoke, but they're trying to say the homes as best as they can at this point. you can see the fire all in that valley coming up here. it is very hard to breathe right now. firefighters racing from one fire to the other. using a buzz saw and then a crowbar to gain entrance. flames quickly approaching this ranch, horses galloping for their lives. you okay? then running up the road we saw estella. >> your kids are in the house? >> yes. >> reporter: her car blocked at the roadblock below and set out on foot to get her girls and animals out. fire cresting the hill near her home. we tried to help. so we came up to the front of

the house to show you what it looks like from this side, and it's absolute chaos here. that house is up in flames. you can see there are dozens of fire crews here and in this entire neighborhood. we've seen police rolling through here begging people to evacuate and what they're fighting right now is the three horsemen of the fire apocalypse you could call it. low humidity, high heat and high wind, and we're getting all of those right now, and you see firefighters also in that house trying to put out the flames in here. it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better today. we are seeing red flag warnings throughout the day, and into tomorrow here in southern california. many tens of thousands evacuated already. michael? >> thank you, matt. we know those firefighters are fighting very hard for that fire. now to northern california where the kincade fire has burned more than 16,000 acres in sonoma county destroying structures and forcing evacuations. more than 1,300 firefighters are trying to contain it. will reeve is in sonoma county with the very latest. good morning to you, will. >> reporter: good morning, michael. yeah, just 5% contained right

now of those 16,000 acres reportedly burning but firefighters should have a chance to get more of a handle on it today with the winds dying down and while that happens, officials are investigating the cause of the fire. reportedly the state's largest utility company may be at the center of it. overnight, new details on the possible origin of the kincade fire potentially sparking near a pg&e transmission tower that broke minutes earlier. the fire has already destroyed dozens of structures and tens of thousands of acres. at least 2,000 people forced to evacuate. look at the smoke smothering the mountains for miles. emergency crews battling the fire in the sky and here on the ground. this time lapse video shows the moment the power goes out. then shortly after a larger glow likely the fire that then quickly spreads. >> possible power lines down in the area. >> reporter: pg&e says they turned power off to nearly 30,000 customers in sonoma

county. however, the report states transmission lines in these areas remain energized, citing forecast weather conditions, particularly wind speeds. the ceo of pg&e speaking out in a press conference. >> at around 9:20 last night we became aware of a transmission level outage in the area of the fire. this morning cal fire personnel on the site brought to his attention and then our attention what appears to be a broken jumper on one of our transmission towers. >> reporter: this morning, first responders hoping to keep the fire contained as much as they can before more powerful winds arrive this weekend. >> the fuel are dry, humidity is down, winds are up. so it's fire's best friend so we're trying to keep it over there and hope it stays that way. it's hard to tell with unpredictable winds. >> reporter: this is 1 of the 49 structures reported destroyed by the kincade fire, and down here on the ground in sonoma county

the mountains, that's where the fire is. we are way up high but the fire has left behind scenes like this. those winds dying down is going to be an advantage for firefighters to try to get a handle on this, but it is a race against time with more red flag warnings with high winds coming just this weekend. tom. >> will reeve with those devastating images this morning. devastating image and winds are what we're really worried about. ginger zee is here now and you were just telling me we have to track this all weekend. >> yes, the next 24 hour is southern california. sunday into monday northern california gets what could be their worst in two years thanks to this high parked over the pacific, it will move inland and sends those winds offshore and we have high wind alerts all over the state of california. let's bring that state up focus on san bernardino, anaheim today, anybody from big bear lake to escondido is under the alert where you could see 70-mile-per-hour gusts. i just got off a plane from l.a. the dry air, the relative humidity as low as 2%.

you can feel it. northern california, we put the streamlines on real quickly just to show you. it will be offshore by sunday night. this is a widespread 60-mile-per-hour wind event that could take down trees and power lines let alone fueling the fires. cecilia. >> hoping everybody stays safe. ginger, thank you. we turn to washington with breaking news about that anonymous official inside the trump administration set to release a tell-all book. a new report in axios claims the mystery source was in frequent meetings with the president himself and plans to detail those conversations with an upcoming book titled "a warning" coming amidst that headline that the justice department launched a criminal investigation into the russia probe. president trump making good on his threat to investigate the investigators. it means the justice department is now essentially investigating itself. our chief justice correspondent, pierre thomas, has the latest, and pierre, this is raising some serious questions about whether the president is using the justice department to go after his enemies. >> reporter: indeed, cecilia. good morning.

barr is now personally overseeing a criminal investigation that could target fbi and intelligence officials who were initially involved in the launch of the russia probe, but democrats are already crying foul. overnight the chairman of the house intelligence and judiciary committees issued a blistering joint statement accusing barr of trying to help the president politically during those damaging impeachment proceedings. it's the investigation the president has been calling for for months, claiming that the mueller investigation's origins were not only a witch-hunt but illegal. >> the russian investigation is a hoax. it's a phony hoax. >> reporter: still fbi and justice department officials have long maintained that numerous contacts between trump associates coupled with the russians hacking the dnc called for a counterintelligence investigation. but trump's appointed attorney general william barr has been skeptical of that probe since taking office. >> i think there is -- spying that did occur. yes, i think spying did occur.

>> reporter: barr did authorize john durham to conduct a review to see if thinitial investigations and court approved surveillance was done by the book. now word first reported in "the new york times" and confirmed by abc news that barr's given durham the power to conduct a criminal investigation. giving him the power to compel witnesses through subpoenas and the ability to seek a grand jury. it's unclear what, if any, criminal violations took place and whether anyone ultimately will be charged. the president claiming treason. >> we can never allow this treasonous -- these treasonous acts. >> reporter: durham, the prosecutor in the case, now has the power of pressure and can pursue subpoenas and call for a grand jury, cecilia. >> this is a serious change, and pierre, that report in axios this morning, the senior administration official writing a tell-all book is one of the biggest mysteries in washington. this person apparently in close contact with the president set to reveal details about those conversations. >> reporter: that's right, cecilia.

the suggestion is that anonymous was often in the room with the president and this person took copious notes. it may be the tell-all tell all and likely will infuriate the president. cecilia. >> i think that's sure. thanks. tom? butina, the pro-gun activist who infiltrated political circles, is reportedly scheduled for release from prison today after being convicted of conspiracy to act as a foreign agent. earlier this year she will apparently head straight back to russia. she was sentenced to 18 months back in april but is getting out early. prosecutors say butina used her connections for access to conservative politicians and was trying to further the interests of russia. michael. >> thank you, tom. now to the california congresswoman facing an ethics investigation for an alleged relationship with one of her staffers on capitol hill. the rising star in the democratic party, katie hill, denies the allegations but admits to a relationship with a young campaign staffer. linsey davis is here with more. linsey, this all comes during a bitter divorce for hill. >> reporter: that's right, michael.

in a letter to her constituents, she specifically calls it a divorce from an abusive husband who seems determined to try to humiliate her. as you said, katie hill was a rising star in the democratic party, and she managed to flip her district from red to blue in the 2018 midterms, and while she is vice chair of the house oversight committee she is facing an investigation of her own. katie hill hit the ground running as a freshman congresswoman. >> i represent a purple district. i did not come here for partisan bickering. >> reporter: but this morning the california representative is at the center of an investigation by the house ethics committee looking into allegations that the congresswoman engaged in a sexual relationship with an individual on her congressional staff, a violation of house rules. in a letter to her constituents hill, who is the first openly bisexual member of congress, denied the allegations, but admitted to a relationship with a woman on her campaign staff which she says was consensual. there are no house rules barring members of congress from engaging in sexual relationships

with campaign staff. >> hello, everybody. >> reporter: that campaign was captured in this "vice" documentary entitled "the most millennial campaign ever" and is seen here with her husband. >> just breathe. >> reporter: the couple is now going through a nasty divorce. hill is accusing her husband of trying to humiliate and destroy her by allegedly leaking nude pictures of her and the campaign staffer which were published and circulated online without her consent, raising potential claims of revenge porn. heslep has not responded to abc news' request for comment. lil she serves on the house oversight committee. a panel that is crucial in the impeachment inquiry of president trump. she has apologized for her actions which she said were inappropriate and added, this coordinated effort to try to destroy me and the people close to me is despicable and will not succeed. attorneys for hill have so sent a cease and desist letter

to dailymail.com which published several racy photos it claims are of the congresswoman. >> thank you, linsey. we turn to the desperate search for the missing 14-year-old girl. her family pleading for her return after she disappeared with a 34-year-old man they believe to be armed and dangerous. amy is here with the latest on this. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, guys. the young girl has been missing now for four days and so the fbi has officially joined the search to try and figure out what exactly happened to her. >> isabel, i love you and i want you to come home. just let me know if you're okay. >> reporter: an emotional plea from the family of 14-year-old isabel hicks. >> we miss you very much and we want you to come home. please just let us know you're safe however you can. >> reporter: the virginia teen missing for four days, disappearing in the early hours monday with 34-year-old bruce lynch who according to abc affiliate wric is known by the family. >> we won't stop until she comes home safely.

>> reporter: the fbi now joining the search this morning believing lynch to be armed and dangerous, warning anyone who may come in contact to not approach. >> our focus being the safe return of isabel to her family. >> reporter: missing posters of the teen seen throughout the community. residents on high alert. >> as a new mom myself i can't help but get choked up about that. >> reporter: authorities have not confirmed whether isabel left with lynch voluntarily but fbi investigators have classified the missing teen as an endangered missing juvenile. her brother posting this message on facebook saying his sister was kidnapped begging for help adding, i just need to find my little sister. >> i'm still your big brother and i'll love you forever. i just need my best friend back. please contact me whenever you can. >> reporter: interestingly, police have not yet issued a warrant for lynch's arrest nor have they publicly accused him of any wrongdoing, but they are certainly on the lookout for him. >> that is very strange. all right, amy. thank you for that. turning now to the world series and the houston astros. the team firing their assistant

general manager, brandon taubman, after his inappropriate comments to a group of female reporters. reports that he shouted about acquiring pitcher roberto osuna who previously served a 75-game suspension for violating the mlb's domestic violence policy. the astros releasing a statement, saying, we sincerely apologize to all individuals who witnessed this incident or were offended by the inappropriate conduct. the astros in no way intended to minimize the issues related to domestic violence. this coming as the team is set to face off against the washington nationals in d.c. for game three tonight. our nation's capital is hosting the world series for the first time in 86 years and president trump says he plans to attend game five, but the nationals have a two-game lead, guys, so we'll see if they sweep houston in four. so many people watching the series and the nats are doing incredible. >> our d.c. bureau has been a little tired lately. >> oh yeah. i saw one of our reporters was watching in europe because like such a huge -- watching the screens.

comediennes performing and describes the moment she first saw weinstein in the crowd. >> to me it was like looking at a shark, like shark eyed. >> reporter: bachman decided to reference weinstein's presence in her comedic set. >> it's freddy krueger in the room, if you will. i didn't know we have to bring our own rape whistles. no? >> shut up. >> oh, shut up? >> reporter: bachman who tells us she's a survivor of sexual assault tells us she was taken aback by the immediate response of the crowd which began booing her. >> but when i heard the voice of what sounded like a young man saying shut up in the back of the room, that was the most triggering experience i've had in a long time. >> reporter: weinstein has kept a low profile since 2017 when multiple women came forward with accusations that he sexually assaulted them. he is currently facing charges of rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two separate women. he has pleaded not guilty and has said any sexual encounters were consensual.

a representative for harvey weinstein tells "the hollywood reporter" this scene was uncalled for, downright rude and an example of how due process today is being squashed by the public trying to take it away in the courtroom too. >> to me it felt like this is a monster from your nightmares. i've literally had nightmares about harvey weinstein the same way that i have nightmares about "it" by stephen king or freddy krueger. >> and weinstein's sexual assault trial is expected to begin in january here in new york city. as for bachman, that comedian, she said she left that event early and tells us she was really wrestling with whether or not to say something when she was on stage because that was total improvisation but glad she spoke out. really uncomfortable for her. >> thank you, paula. we are going to switch gears to singer lizzo fighting back against two songwriters who are

claiming credit for the signature line in her hit song "truth hurts." lizzo saying the two men had nothing to do with the song, instead crediting someone else. chris connelly is in los angeles right now with the story. good morning, chris. >> reporter: good morning, michael. lizzo is one of 2019's brightest new stars and "truth hurts" is one of the year's biggest songs. no argument there. so who does and who doesn't deserve credit for writing "truth hurts"? that's been a bit of an argument. ♪ why men great till they gotta be great ♪ >> reporter: "truth hurts" by lizzo, the song of the summer and a star making mega hit for the rapper singer out of minnesota. the success of "truth hurts" has led otherso asse authorship of one of its key lines -- ♪ i just took a dna test, turns out i'm 100% that [muted] ♪ >> reporter: two entities sought compensation for coming up with that we won't say it here

witticism. songwriting duo justin and jeremiah raisen claiming in these instagram posts they are co-writers for "truth hurts" and that lizzo took the line from a songwriting session for a different track back in april 2017. ♪ turns out i'm 100 percent that -- >> reporter: lizzo's people have refuted that. a suit she filed against them says the raisens' publhehas asked for 20% ownership of "truth hurts." lizzo said in a different context there was no one in the room when i wrote "truth hurts" except me, producer ricky reed and my tears. now getting a warmer reception, though, is british singer mina lioness who wrote and tweeted the line back in february 2017. lizzo tweeting wednesday in part, while working on a demo i saw a meme that resonated with me. i later learned that a tweet inspired the meme. the creator of that tweet is the person i am sharing my success with, not these men, period. and mina lioness announcing the

will even let you switch careers. they're an opportunity to learn while you earn. apprenticeships, on-the-job training that often leads to a higher salary. >> any time i'm here, any time i'm in school sitting in class, i do get paid for that. >> reporter: caitlin greeen is a 25-year-old soon-to-be mom currently working at siemens, usa, focusing on industrial machinery. the company introducing us to green who is enrolled in their integrated machining apprenticeship. >> they say entirely for the schooling, even your school supplies, books, anything you may need. they supply it for you. >> what we do is we have folks who join us, and they join us out of high school, or they may join us from another career. they enter the program in community college, take classes there. we pay for it. they work here. we pay them for that, and when they graduate, they have got this great entree to a job, and no debt.

>> ceo barbara humpton says the company started the program when they couldn't find people with the necessary training. >> we have 12,000 applicants but couldn't fill all the jobs with people with the right skills. >> reporter: for green, a former veterinary technician for a new career, it was a perfect fit. >> i applied and got it and so since then i've been reaching those goals between the family portion and schooling. >> reporter: according to the u.s. department of labor, there are more than 23,000 registered apprentice programs across the nation. the average starting salary after an apprenticeship, $70,000. plus, there are now programs for high school students. careerwise colorado lets high school students split time between the classroom and the workplace while earning a paycheck. >> i'm a 17-year-old, but i'm able to work in this environment and be professional and add

worth to this company and add worth to myself. >> once upon a time everyone thought a college degree was really the ticket to the american dream and what i'm here to tell you is that there are so many pathways now. >> reporter: clearly some really great opportunities out there and if you're looking for the right place to find these programs the government has a website, it's called apprenticeship.gov. go there and search finder listing section and enter the industry or company you're looking to work in and where you're going to live and it will show you great jobs with these programs available, michael. >> like a win/win situation. >> it really is. >> so what fields are expected to see the most growth? >> some areas where we're really seeing growth right now are in health care, in particular, health care support. so not just nurses but nurse's assistants, personal care and service with wellness growing so much in this country, whether you're going to be a fitness trainer or a skin care specialist, that's an area, of course, people hear about computer and mathematical. always an area we hear about, s.t.e.m. jobs, another big area

what happens when mom and dad don't post them? kids notice and many aren't happy about it. paula faris is back with us. you spoke to a mom who is seeing that in her little 5-year-old. >> there's so much of her story in all of us as well. we're in this moment where we're teaching our kids that, you know, if we don't document it, the next generation, if we don't take photos and videos and post it, it doesn't happen but kids are seeing this addiction and let's call it what it is, an addiction. they're seeing it front and center and picking up our unhealthy habits. >> reporter: this morning, celebrity mom jenny mollen is asking all moms to put their phones away. she has two boys with actor jason biggs, and she shares a lot of her life on instagram, and she recently had a social media aha moment with her 5-year-old son sid. >> we were walking home and he stopped me an i said, you know, why are you so cute and, of

course, he looks at me and said you can take a picture of me if you want and i so, no, i don't want to take a picture of you. i just want to see you. i want to have this moment with you and there was this sort of wounded look in his eyes as if, you know, what i said was i don't know somehow -- he was a contestant on "the bachelorette" and i wasn't giving him the final rose. >> reporter: mollen's article titled "pics or it didn't happen," in the october issue of "parents" magazine, asks parents in this digital age to hold back sometimes. not every moment is made for pictures. >> pics or it didn't happen. are they learning that from us? >> yes, i think they are. >> that's a tough pill to swallow. >> it's a hard pill to swallow. >> why were you compelled to write this piece? >> i don't want my child to fe like i didn't see him -- i don't want him to ever feel he's not being heard. i see it on instagram all the time. i'm seeing moms showing me look how good i'm parenting. look at my kids. you know, we did this today. first day of school there's like a million placards saying so and so is off to school. >> we all do it. >> reporter: since posting the article, lots of moms have been

8. they're growing up in a culture where everything is posted. my youngest son, his first selfie was posted an hour after i gave birth and everyone is doing that because they want to share the pictures with the world but we're giving our kids a skewed perception of reality. he doesn't know i put on b and mascara and he's not understanding there are a lot of filters these pictures go through, and the world isn't picture perfect. it's messy, and our kids need to know that so they're comfortable when their life isn't so picture perfect. >> what are the risks here? >> you know, i notice they don't have any sense of privacy. there is no boundaries of what they'll share on all these social media platforms and they're also obsessed with their posts getting likes. they really want people to like and respond to their photos even at a young age. mom, how many likes did i get? sometimes for a lot of kids -- >> that's not how you judge how you're doing in life. >> exactly and they're tying it to their self-esteem which is really bad and we want them to feel good about themselves for other things, not facebook photos.
