offer from the whistle-blower in the ukraine call scandal. abc's megan tevrizian is here with the latest. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth and kenneth. a lawyer for the whistle-blower says his client is willing to answer written questions submitted by house republicans. but this morning, at least one leading republican says that's not good enough because the whistle-blower wouldn't be cross-examined. another busy week on capitol hill amid a growing impeachment showdown. president trump still adamant he did nothing wrong. >> my phone call was perfecto. it was totally appropriate. >> reporter: stepping up demands the whistle-blower who raised questions about his phone call with the president of ukraine be >> tst-bweshld be tlblower gave false ories. some people would call it fraud. >> reporter: that demand despite key congressional testimony supporting the whistle-blower's claims. in a surprise proposal, the whistle-blower's legal team has now offered to answer

congressional republicans' written questions directly to them under penalty of perjury without having to go through the democrat controlled impeachment process. the whistle-blower's attorney telling abc news, now we have offered directly to the gop. they have no excuses. but some republicans say that's not enough. >> you will have the chance to propose witnesses. who do you want to call? >> well, there are a lot of people. i mean the whistle-blower themself. >> reporter: the top republican on the house oversight committee, jim jordan, saying you don't get to ignite an impeachment effort and never account for your actions and role in orchestrating it. the whistle-blower's attorney has stressed the need for his client to remain anonymous for safety for that person's family saying there have already been death threats. kenneth. >> all right, megan, thank you. a developing story from central california where two murder suspects are on the run. the men escaped from the monterey county jail sunday. sheriff's officials are not sure how they broke out, but they say some of the men's clothes have

been found outside of the facility. a $5,000 reward is being offered for their capture. the last escape at that jail was five years ago when an inmate climbed out of a ventilation duct. mcdonald's has fired its ceo for having an affair with another employee. steve easterbrook has also resigned from the board. the 52-year-old pushed the company to modernize and led the drive for all day breakfast. he sent an email to mcdonald's employees saying, i engaged in a recent consensual relationship with an employee which violated mcdonald's policies. this was a mistake given the values of the company. i agree with the board that it is time for me to move on. in response a workers' rights group criticized mcdonald's for waiting too long to address what it calls a sexual harassment problem at that company. now to the race for 2020 and the focus on health care. elizabeth warren unveiled her medicare for all plan, but she's sending conflicting messages on who would pay for it. over the weekend she said only billionaires would pay for it, but on friday she said only the top 1%, which is a much larger

group, the majority of whom are not billionaires. the other democratic candidates are challenging both her plan and her math. >> do you see any challenges with getting it through? what is your message to your rivals? >> if somebody else has a better plan to deal with that $11 trillion that families are going to pay over the next ten years, then they should put it out. >> well, the math is certainly controversial. again, there are variations in the estimates in the trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars. and we don't have to go there in order to deliver health care to everybody. >> mayor pete buttigieg got some good news in the latest national poll. he has taken over fourth place behind joe biden, elizabeth warren and bernie sanders, but many analysts say mayor pete is still struggling to pick up support from black and latino voters. we turn now to the russian agent breaking her silence after serving time in a u.s. prison. maria butina was convicted of trying to influence u.s. policy to help the kremlin.

in a new interview she denies any wrongdoing and blames what she calls racism against russians for the charges she faced. this morning, a convicted russian agent is telling her side of the story. i never sought to influence your policies. i came here on my own because i wanted to learn from the united states and go back to russia to make russia better. >> reporter: maria butina is the first russian national convicted for trying to influence u.s. politics. during the 2016 campaign, the 30-year-old befriended powerful republicans and forced a relationship with the nra allegedly to promote pro-russia policies. she was sentenced in april 2018 after pleading guilty to acting as an unregistered foreign agent. butina is now back in russia, but she sat down with "60 minutes" before she was deported. she claims the feds tried to paint her as a criminal seductress. >> you traveled across the united states attending nra meetings. the u.s. government says that you were making connections with

republicans so that you could influence u.s. policy, and you were doing it slowly but deliberately. >> if i were not russian, that would be called social networking. >> butina says her involvement with the nra was part of the gun rights movement she started in russia, and she denies playing any role in russian interference in the 2016 election. but "60 minutes" says it obtained thousands of twitter messages she exchanged with a russian official where they allegedly used phrases like following our game, the battle for the future and patience and cold blood. >> you know, in reading through your messages, it reads as if he's your intelligence case officer. >> look, this is -- i think it's an american very old saying that suggests that wolves have teeth, but not all animals with teeth are wolves. you cannot judge a person based on appearance. >> in response the state department official called butina's answers in that interview a, quote, masterpiece of disinformation. time now for a look at your

weather for this monday morning. millions of americans are waking up to winter-like temperatures. windchills this morning are in the 30s in nashville and atlanta, 38 in new york. 26 in caribou, maine. lake-effect snow is expected this week in new york and michigan. temperatures will be anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees below average in those areas. meanwhile, the evacuation orders lifted after the wildfires in california and, lastly, this owl saved from the maria fire. well, coming up, the controversy over krispy kreme doughnuts being resold. the company is responding. but first they're two of the most popular brands in america, tesla and under armour. why both are facing serious new federal investigations. and later, an attack on the street. battery acid thrown on a man's

we are back with new video of former president jimmy carter. he was back teaching sunday school in his hometown yesterday, just two weeks after breaking his pelvis in a fall at home. carter looking good at 95 years old. well, an urgent search is under way for the killer of a beloved couple from new hampshire on a cross-country road trip. their bodies were found buried in a beach in texas. about 100 people attended a vigil for james and michelle butler in rumney, new hampshire, last night. the couple was last seen setting up camp on october 15th. but they were reported missing one week later. their truck was captured on surveillance video at a border crossing in mexico.

family members say they kn ing was wrong. >> they're always in contact with the family, so the fact that even for a day they were out of contact was really strange. we kind of knew that there was something really wrong because there's no way that he would, one, allow somebody else to take the truck and rv, two, take it across to mexico. >> but police are expected to release more information about the case later today. tesla is facing a new federal investigation. regulators are looking into battery fires in the company's vehicles. they want to know why some of the electric cars spontaneously burst into flames. reports say it sometimes happens while the cars are in motion. other times when parked. if tesla doesn't respond in a timely fashion to the government's request for battery data, it could face millions of dollars in fines. under armour is also coming under federal scrutiny. officials are looking into the company's accounting procedures and whether it shifted its sales between quarters to make the bottom line look healthier.

under armour says it is cooperating and believes its practices were appropriate. krispy kreme doughnut deliveries have come to an abrupt end for a minnesota college student. the company told jason gonzalez to stop buying its doughnuts and rivingio them at school. buying up to 1,200 doughnuts and then selling them for $20 per dozen because minnesota doesn't have any krispy kremes. well, the company says reselling them creates liability issues. well, coming up, the new mystery surrounding a one-ton boulder stolen from a national forest. also ahead, history revealed. the 100-year-old shipwreck that just turned up near niagara falls and could soon go over the edge. plus, what we're learning about a deadly salmonella outbreak linked to ground beef. . there's my career... my cause... and creating my dream home. i'm a work in progress. so much goes into who i am. hiv medicine is one part of it.

>> the water gushed from one liberty place for about five minutes soaking this street. authorities say it was an annual test of the building's fire protection system. we turn now to thearasved t edge of niagara falls. >> the large iron vessel had been wedged in rocks for a century until a storm this week. this morning this historic ship is on the more for the first time in more than a century. it was wedged in the rocks above niagara falls, but now it's closer to the edge of the falls' nearly 200-foot drop. >> it's been stuck there for 101 years. it appears to have sort of flipped on its side and spun around. >> the ship has been a must see attraction at the falls since it got stuck in the rocks back in 1918 when it broke away from its barge. the coast guard pulled two men on board to safety after a dramatic 17-hour-long rescue. the sh tugo uovable

stayed put until last week on halloween night. a record-breaking wind and rainstorm swept through the region thursday. >> oh, my god. >> dislodging the wreck flipping it over and pushing it more than 150 feet downstream. >> it's not in the exact same spot it was yesterday. we think it's about 50 meters downriver from its original location. and what we think has happened now is it's turned and twisted in the very heavy current and flow of the river and is stuck where it is now. >> park officials say they are keeping a close eye on the ship's new resting place, and if it s authorities will be notified to keep tourists away. >> it's stuck where it is now and it could be stuck there for days, or it could be stuck there for years. it's anyone's guess. >> it turns out back in 1918 the two men on board flooded the ship to slow it down and stop it

from going over the falls. an acid attack in milwaukee is being investigated as a possible hate crime. mahud villalaz was left screaming after a stranger splashed what appeared to be battery acid in his face. the peruvian immigrant says a man accused him of being in the country illegally and then told him to move his truck. moments later he was attacked. >> he start arguing, why you come here and invade my country. why you came here illegally? sir, you don't know my status. i'm a u.s. citizen too, and he get mad when i tell him, everybody came here from somewhere else. >> the victim was treated for second-degree burns. police are using witness descriptions and security video to try to find the suspect. well, in medical news at least one person is dead and eight others hospitalized from a salmonella outbreak linked to ground beef. ten people have become sick in at least six states seen here. but investigators have not identified a single source or brand of ground beef. the cdc is now warning people not to eat raw or undercooked

ground beef. this particular strain of salmonella causes more severe infections that can infect the blood. we have an update now on a tourist attraction in arizona that was stolen from a national forest. the wizard rock has magically reappeared. the one-ton boulder was reported missing about two weeks ago. friday a park employee found the rock had been returned. no word yet on who is responsible. well, in sports the patriots finally lost a game. they met their match in baltimore where the ravens led for the entire game. going into last night the patriots' defense gave up an average of eight points a game but they gave up 37 against the ravens. the final score, 37-20. the world series champion washington nationals visit the white house today. presumably they'll be wearing shirts, all of them, unlike last night when some of them went topless while visiting the washington capitals hockey game. the capitals were world champs in 2018. keep on your shirts, guys.

the federal government is looking into tesla after what regulators call an alarming number of car fires that occurred worldwide. >> last year several teslas reportedly caught fire seemingly out of nowhere. >> amy hollyfield is live at tesla headquarters with details. amy? >> good morning. federal investigators are worried about the number of fires that have happened in teslas. they are calling it an alarming number. several teslas have caught fire over the last year. just out of nowhere bursting into flames. federal regulators are looking into the lithium-ion component that makes up the battery. >> lithium-ion battery has two components that has to be kept apart from each other. if they contact each other, then you get a fire or an >> tesla is being asked to hand over information from the past
