there last night was meant to build momentum for republican governor matt bevin. he's locked this a tight race with kentucky's democratic attorney general andy beshear. there are also governor's races in mississippi and louisiana and every seat in virginia's general assembly is up for grabs. experts say control of that chamber could be decided by one or two seats. next to the breaking news overnight in maryland. police say a man was stabbed to death outside a popeyes after a fight over the restaurant's popular sandwich. >> hard to put into words. >> reporter: the sandwich craze at popeyes turning deadly in maryland. >> we have been able to determine that this is related to the release of the sandwich here at this restaurant. >> reporter: police in prince george's county say a 28-year-old man was stabbed to death after arguing with another man over the release of popeyes chicken sandwich. >> this individual was in line, a line specifically for the sale of the sandwich when another customer and he got into an altercation, and that ended with the victim being stabbed outside of the business.

>> reporter: when it first >> reporter: debuted in august, the popeyes chicken sandwich exploded in popularity and quickly sold out across the country and popeyes said to bring your own bun and buy the chicken tenders to form a sandwich. >> it's a meme craze going on. everybody has been talking about it. >> reporter: people started reselling the sandwich on line marking up the price by 600%. a tennessee man even took legal action demanding $5,000 in damages from the restaurant for emotional harm and wear and tear on his car from driving to various popeyes locations searching for the sandwich. >> thank you, jesus. thank you. god is good. >> reporter: amid the outcry the restaurant brought the sandwich back this week hiring 400 extra employees to handle the rush but the long lines started forming again. back in maryland overnight police are asking witnesses to come forward, and they're appealing to the killer to surrender. >> we are asking the person who did this to come forward. he knows what he did here

tonight, and he needs to do the right thing, and he needs to step up. >> and this morning police are not saying exactly how the argument began between the two men. a self-proclaimed white supremacist is under arrest in connection with a plot to bomb a colorado synagogue. the fbi says 27-year-old richard holzer was arrested during a sting when agents delivered what he thought were two pipe bombs and some dynamite. authorities say he was wearing a nazi armband. the synagogue's president says they've increased security since the mass shooting last year at the synagogue in pittsburgh. >> we take our security very seriously here. we have been since what happened in pittsburgh happened and also we're not victims, and we're not going to be victimized, and we're going to defend ourselves. >> temple emanuel is the second oldest synagogue in colorado and the arrest comes as anti-so mitting attacks have been on the rise across the country. we have a developing story out of south america where we know that protesters in chile

are ramping up their fight against income inequality and clashed with police in the capital. the civil unrest is now being blamed for more than $1 billion in damage to chile's economy. turning now to the weather, many americans are bracing for the first snowfall of the season. let's take a look at your tuesday forecast. good morning. we're tracking another blast of arctic air and snow across the northern tier of the nation from the dakotas into the great lakes. we're talking one to three inches of snow, especially around the great lakes as we head through tonight and into our day tomorrow. this system will be moving into the northeast, but generally we'll find rain showers for our tuesday across the region. by the time we get into the tail end of the workweek, that's when we get a blast of arctic air here and the threat for accumulating snows across northern new england. i'm accuweather meteorologist adam del rosso. and coming up, the

authorities in texas are now searching for two people in connection with the murder of a new hampshire couple. police call the man and woman in this surveillance image persons of interest who were driving the victims' rv across the border of mexico last month six days after the retired couple was last seen alive. the bodies of michelle and james butler who were on a road trip were found buried in the beach on padre island. police have not determined a motive for the killings. buffalo wild wings has fired two employees at a restaurant near chicago for how they allegedly handled a racist customer. the employees reportedly asked a group of black customers twice to move to a different seat because another customer sitting nearby objected to their presence. the manager reportedly claimed their tables had been reserved. buffalo wild wings says it has zero tolerance for racism. travelers at los angeles international airport say new rules on ride shares and taxis are a solution in a search of a problem. riders are calling the new pickup system at the airport a nightmare. it was supposed to reduce

(avo) that's using your frigidaire. we are back with this terrifying video of a boy falling during a zip line accident in lakeland, florida. his family is now suing claiming he suffered serious injuries. >> they blame operator error and state investigators agree. they say the harness was not secured correctly. we turn now to a new security warning for millions of people using voice control assistants like google home and amazon's alexa. >> researchers say they found a way to take control of the devices and all you need is a laser pointer. this morning, new security concerns surrounding smart speakers. >> alexa, dim the lights. >> okay. >> reporter: the voice controlled home assistants have exploded in popularity with an estimated 200 million expected to be in homes by the end of this year. now researchers at the university of michigan have discovered devices like google home, amazon's alexa and apple's siri can be hacked with a laser pointer.

>> we can basically hijack the smart speaker and basically get full control over the smart speaker and the systems it's connected to. >> reporter: scientists say they were able to mimic sound waves allowing light to impersonate a person talking. when they pointed the light at a smart speaker's microphone, they were able to control devices licked to that speaker. >> we controlled the garage doors. we unlocked and started certain vehicles. >> reporter: video shows them duping speakers, effectively making the laser pointer say voice commands like, okay, google, open the garage door. >> okay, opening. >> reporter: scientists say they were able to control devices that were more than 300 feet away. in total, the researchers tested 17 devices. they say the laser based commands worked on all of them but at varying distances. google and amazon did not deny the flaw. they say they're reviewing the research. one expert recommends making sure your device is not near a window, and they say check the settings to limit what your device can do.

an urgent manhunt is under way for two murder suspects who escaped from a jail in monterey, california. authorities say the men got away by climbing through a 22-inch hole in the ceiling of a bathroom. then they snuck through the inner walls using an 11-inch crawl space. police say the men should be considered dangerous. a man who saved a stranger from an oncoming subway train says he only did what everyone should do. bay area transit worker john o'connor is being called a humble hero. he jumped into action sunday when a man fell onto the tracks after an oakland raiders football game. o'connor lifted the man to safety just in time. but he says he's no hero. >> police, fire, military, you got heroes on a daily basis. it really feels awkward to be called a hero because that's what we're supposed to do. and life is precious so thank
