the cowboys ended up winning the game against my giants. >> ah. >> but now "the dallas morning news" is calling the cat the real mvp. i got to agree. now to the you are jnt manhunt under way for two murder suspects who broke out a california jail. will carr has the latest. >> reporter: this morning an all out manhunt in northern california after two men accused of murder shimmied through that 22-inch hole in the ceiling of a bathroom inside this high security jail. >> i just want to impress upon everybody this is an active search for these two very dangerous individuals. >> reporter: authorities say santos samuel fonseca and jonathan salazar with that "p" tattoo on his upper right cheek, two opposing gang members, teamed up after they found a blind spot in the room, cutting the hole themselves then sneaking through an 11-inch crawl space bypassing pipes totally undetected inside the jail walls. eventually they kicked open this panel door.

you can even see a footprint in the corner. >> we have the construction going on and unfortunately the hatch that they got through opened up into an area that was covered by construction fencing, not security fencing, not the constantine wire, the barbed wire that most people know about. >> reporter: using that security lapse the two men escaped shedding their jail clothes just outside the fencing. both were set to face trial next year. obviously, they didn't want to wait that long. instead they took advantage of that security lapse. you heard the sheriff mentioning not having to go through this wire. instead, making it over this construction fence we're told both of the suspects are from right here in salinas and should be considered armed daer michael. >>. we'll turn now to the urgent manhunt for the murderers of an american family traveling to a wedding in mexico when they were ambushed on the way.

>> reporter: an awful story. the details still coming in but we've spoken to relatives who tell us their family was attacked, kidnapped and killed on their way to that wedding. at least three women and six children were killed during an ambush in northern mexico less than 100 miles from the u.s. border. >> someone came upon the vehicle, one of the vehicles was burning, and discovered that it was my brother's suburban. >> reporter: the associated press obtained this video which it says shows a burned out vehicle that may belong to the family killed in the attack. relatives say one of the burned out suvs contained the remains of a woman and her four children. the family members who were on their way to a wedding are part rorter: according to y olt wn mexican officials, securities forces reinforced with national guard, army, and state police troops are investigating the killings which the family

george, lev parnas is ready to testify. >> okay, mary, thanks very much. all this comes as our latest poll with "the washington post" shows the top democratic contenders extending their leads over president trump. if the election were held today joe biden and bernie sanders beat the pre all increased their leads since july. other warning signs for the president, 6 in 10 americans say he's not honest and trustworthy, that he lacks the right personality and temperament and doesn't understand their problems. it is election day also this year with key races in four states. president trump is campaigning hard to try to keep the governor's seats in mississippi and kentucky for the gop and our linsey davis is in louisville where the president held a rally last night. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. it is a cold and wet morning in louisville but still as you can see a steady stream of voters

coming in today. people know that this is a tight race for the governor's office, that there are a lot of eyeballs on what happens here in kentucky and certainly a lot at stake. so in one corner you have the republican incumbent matt bevin against his challenger, the democratic attorney general, andy beshear. now, many say that the ballots being cast here is going way beyond kentucky politics. bevin who is among the most unpopular governors has tried to really align himself with president trump and his signal is that a vote for bevin is a vote against president trump. trump and kentucky is largely considered to be a red state. president trump wong the election here by 30 points but beshear has a history here as well. his father was a two-term democratic governor who preceded bevin and beshear is trying to focus locally, specifically on education and health care, two issues where bevin has alienated many voters and it's also a bit of a bellwether for mitch mcconnell's own campaign for next year, a democratic victory

in kentucky could be seen as a big sign of trouble, not just for mcconnell but for the republican party at large in 2020, george. >> all right, linsey, and while you were talking democrats are on the move in virginia and the president sent out a tweet telling voters in virginia to vote republican. thanks very much for that. michael. now we turn to that weather whiplash. after record heat, the coldest temperatures of the season and possible snow are on the way for millions from the midwest to the northeast. ginger is doing what she's doing best, tracking the very latest. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you, michael. two storms and a cold snap from the wisconsin dells back through austin, minnesota. there's this area that's going to get snow tonight through tomorrow. let's spotlight wisconsin because they're going to take the brunt of it here, especially southern wisconsin. we put the streamlines, which represent where that low pressure system, where the winds at the surface will be. you see how it wraps up right into lacrosse into that bend. well, that's going to be by tomorrow morning. the winter wea means if you are traveling through southern wisconsin or kind of central there, madison or milwaukee, you're going to end up with a potential for two

inches to four inches of snow going into early tomorrow morning. so it's really kind of an overnight deal. interstate 94 and 90 will be a little bit slick. that's just storm one. i have to show you storm two which could bring flooding to the ozarks down to arkansas and oklahoma right to the northeast, where it's going to meet that super cold air, robin, and bring us flakes of snow especially interior new england and western new york. >> on the watch-out. okay, thank you, ginger. now to a terror arrest in colorado. the fbi taking a 27-year-old into custody accusing him of plotting to bomb a synagogue. the fbi saying he admitted planning the attack as part of what he called, quote, a racial holy war. clayton sandell is at that synagogue in colorado with the latest. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. temple emanuel is the second oldest synagogue here in colorado, built in 1900, now at the center of a domestic terrorism plot. authorities say a suspected white supremacist, 27-year-old richard holzer, caught the attention of the fbi after using multiple facebook accounts to spread his hatred of jews and desire to blow up this

synagogue. now on friday, undercover agents say they provided the suspect with replica pipe bombs and dynamite. they were harmless but the fbi says his intentions were real. holzer is charged with a hate crime and could face 20 years in federal prison. as for this synagogue, they say nowadays they have to take security very seriously and quite grateful that this was stopped before it went too far. george. >> thank goodness that happened. thanks very much. we turn now to a battle brewing over a new book taking on president trump. the author is anonymous. the senior official who described the resistance inside the administration in a "new york times" essay last year and the book titled "a warning" is due out later this month, but the justice department has now sent a warning of its own to the book's publisher. our senior national correspondent terry moran has the story. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. that's right. the department of justice has written the publisher of this book and the author's agents

demanding that they turn over information that could reveal who this, quote, senior administration official is. as you say, last year this official wrote that article in "the new york times" painting a devastating portrait of the president, claiming to be a member of the resistance at the top levels inside the administration. trump was enraged. he called that treason and so the justice department letter yesterday says we request that you immediately provide us with your representations that the author did not sign any nondisclosure agreement and that the author did not have any access to classified information. that information, obviously, could reveal this person's identity. the book's publisher said they will stand by their agreement to keep the confidentiality of this author. so stay tuned on this. this could end up in court. >> stay tuned also, terry, on that fight over the president's tax returns now may be heading to the supreme court after a key court ruling yesterday. >> reporter: that's right. the manhattan district attorney wants the president's tax returns. so he issued a subpoena, not to the president himself but to the president's personal accountants. the president objected and the federal appeals court yesterday

rejected the president's argument saying that not even presidents have the power to block a subpoena to a third party from a grand jury. so the president is going to take this to the supreme court, it looks like. two other presidents have tried to get out of legal processes in the supreme court. richard nixon, bill clinton, they both lost. it could be 0 for 3 for presidents if the president takes it to this supreme court. >> terry moran, thanks very much. now to the travel nightmare that is unfolding at airports. it has nothing to do with planes. new rules for ride share and taxi pickups are leaving passengers waiting potentially hours to get home, something matt gutman saw firsthand at l.a.x. and he has the latest. >> reporter: long lines at the airport are nothing new. but here at l.a.x., these weary travelers aren't waiting to board a plane.of tking lot l.a.x. recently rolled out a new pickup system which funnels taxi and ride-share passengers from the terminals to an external parking lot, appropriately named laxit, the idea was to

streamline the process as it undergoes construction. the result -- chaos. many venting on social media. >> pretty terrible. >> logistically it takes up so much time and people are confused. >> reporter: some passengers claim to have waited in line for upwards of three hours trying to catch their ride. in the good old days, this is where you pick up your uber, but no more. now, l.a.x. shuttle. so i jumped on board myself to see what travelers here are up against and trekking through the lot i found more than just taxis and ride shares. look at this, there are food trucks here. this is not peak time. this should be the quietest, most mellow time of day but it's not. the wait, just as long as it looked. it's about 15 minutes since i hit the rideshare number. it's been 23 minutes. 27 minutes and we're almost at the end of the line.

on the hunt for the two people in this surveillance image who they say are persons of interest in the double murder of james and michelle butler. >> they have specific characteristics. the male has large holes, earrings in his ears. often called gauges. >> reporter: police say this photo shows a male and female driving the butlers' rv across the mexican border october 31st. six days after they were last seen alive. police highlighting their unique tattoos urging anyone with information to come forward. >> it is possible that they are from the corpus christi area. someone out there knows these individuals, you know, by first name. >> reporter: the butlers' family telling abc news the new hampshire retirees were avid road trippers traveling across country leaving their home in new hampshire, hoping to wind up in florida where they were planning on selling christmas trees before the holiday. police say the couple set up camp with their pickup truck and

rv here on padre island, october 15th. >> a lot of families that camp there, it's a popular area and it's been a safe area. >> reporter: when the butlers missed a scheduled call with their family they knew something was wrong. >> they're always in contact with t fily, even a day out of contact was really strange. >> reporter: about two weeks later local authorizes found the butlers' bodies buried in a shallow grave on the beach after their cell phone pinged to the area. their rv gone. the couple now honored with this makeshift memorial. and police have been working on that time line and, of course, trying to track down the two people in that surveillance image that they want to talk to in connection with this case. in the meantime, those who frequent this area, they are in disbelief about what happened here and are desperate for the killer to be caught soon. guys. >> i bet they are. okay, marcus, thanks very much. michael. now to new research showing how easy it can be to hack your home. researchers say they found a way to take control of voice assistants like google home, amazon alexa and even some

phones just by shining a laser pointer. t.j. holmes is here with more and a speaker in hand. >> hey, you know, there have been safety concerns about these but it has to do with privacy. are they recording you? this is altogether different. hackers can take over your device. now, that might not sound like a big deal if all you do is say, hey, play my music. what time is it? what's the weather. you know what other people do with these, hey, unlock my front door, hey, open my garage and now hackers can take over your voice assistant without saying a word. >> alexa, dim the lights. >> okay. >> reporter: a new warning this morning for anyone using alexa, siri, google home or any of those wildly popular voice-controlled digital assistants. researchers claim they found a flaw that allows hackers to access your device from hundreds of feet away giving them the ability to potentially unlock your front door, even start your car. >> it's 9:43. >> reporter: watch as researchers from the university of michigan access a smart assistant and force it to open a

garage door by pointing a laser. >> okay, opening. rorter:eir new study revealed monday researchers say they were able to take over google home, amazon's alexa and apple's siri devices from hundreds of feet away using lasers to simulate audio signals, essentially tricking the device's microphone into thinking it was hearing sound. daniel ginkin is one of the researchers behind the university of michigan study. >> i was surprised the microphone interpreted the injected light as sound. basically the microphone heard light. >> reporter: at one point it claims researchers were able to take over a voice assistant from more than 350 feet away allowing them to open the front doors protected by a smart lock and turn lights on and off. they even had access to make online purchases and had access to remotely unlock and start a car connected to one of the devices. >> we can basically get full control over the smart speaker.

and the systems it's connected to. >> reporter: we reached out to all three companies. apple declined to comment. google tells abc news they are closely reviewing this research paper adding, they are always looking at ways to improve the security of our devices. and amazon tells us they'll continue to engage with the authors to understand more about their work adding they take customer security and the security of our products seriously. and i want to be clear, i have one of these devices sitting by george. no one is going to take a little laser pointer and go by your front door and do that and set the thing off. that's not what we're talking about. it takes specialized equipment and you have to have a laser focus. they had to have a tripod and telephoto lens. it takes a specialized skill. it's not an easy. i did an experiment yesterday and found a fix. don't put it next to the window at your house. [ laughter ] problem solved. it really is that simple. it shouldn't be, okay, you shouldn't have to. they want them to change the microphones but if you're

we are back now with that abc news exclusive.d ir tak nuclear-powered navy submarine that's now on a classified mission in the eastern mediterranean. david is here with us right now and, boy, what access you received. >> yeah, you all were asking questions in the commercial break. this was extraordinarily rare to get access to a submarine of this kind, especially given the classified nature of the mission it is now on. what you're about to see this morning, the tomahawks, the torpedoes, the nuclear reactor and the warning about who else is in the water right now. this morning, the "uss florida" is somewhere in the eastern mediterranean on a highly classified mission. they call it the silent service for a reason. >> that's right. all those missions are some of the most highly classified that we do. >> reporter: a nuclear-powered u.s. navy-guided submarine. 160 crew on board. we are given rare access as we board the submarine.

rear admiral william houston describes where we are standing, just above the tomahawk missiles. this can lift up at any time. >> this could lift up at any time on order if we wanted to time on order if we wanted to launch the tomahawk missiles. sort of standing on? >> right now, seven. >> reporter: they have more than 100 tomahawks at the ready, and they are about to take us down into the submarine where we will spend the next 24 hours traveling with them. a maze of narrow hallways and hatches as we prepare to climb to the top of the sub. we wait for word. >> control bridge, send abc to the bridge. >> reporter: up the ladder they tell you when it comes to your hands and your feet, make sure three out of four are touching at all times. we climb several floors to meet the captain and members of his crew waiting atop "the uss florida" where we find they are on patrol. back down inside the submarine captain seth burton takes us past the missile tubes holding the tomahawks.

>> i think they'd like to watch us. >> reporter: in fact, the russians recently showing their own underwater muscle in the barents sea. at night, we watch as they used a peris cope with an infrared camera. >> full no contact. >> reporter: so we're alone. >> nobody is there. >> which is good. >> reporter: we crawl through another hatch and snake our way to the nuclear reactor. we're basically traveling on this submarine with a nuclear reactor. >> absolutely. we can operate more than 90 to 120 days submerged. >> reporter: it is always ready for u.s. special forces, for navy s.e.a.l.s, their weapons already on board. we are about to climb to see the small compartment attached to the top of the submarine where navy s.e.a.l.s, u.s. special forces would deploy right into the water. this is the dry deck shelter. on top of the submarine. in fact, we're still about 200 feet beneath the surface of the mediterranean here in this room. this is where the navy s.e.a.l.s would deploy and a navy s.e.a.l.

delivery vehicle of some sort, and, in fact, the only thing separating me from the intense pressure of the water is this black hatch, and, in fact, if you listen, you can actually hear the water. and on board there is one more powerful weapon, the torpedo. >> as a captain you always want to be ready and -- >> this one here? >> right. >> reporter: they have eight of them on board the submarine "the uss florida" now on that classified mission. >> nobody knows where it is at in the mediterranean at any one time. >> including now. >> including now. >> you know, you saw that hatch leading to the nuclear reactor on board. this submarine has been in the water for more than 30 years now at work. it's only been refueled once because of that nuclear reactor. their missions can last up to 120 days. four months they spend underwater. they make their own oxygen once they're down below breaking the hydrogen from the oxygen using electricity. the only thing they run out of after a certain period of time

so it appeared in the journal jama pediatrics and took these preschoolers. they did certain types of mris, regular mris, functional mris and a type of mri called dti showed them video and it was the first study that actually showed a change in the structure of their brain, the white matter which is the part of the brain that sends signals from one side or one part to another. so we don't know the significance of this yet. we don't know whether this is a bad thing or a good thing. but the first time that a study actually showed that watching a screen can produce changes in the structure of the brain. >> there are some positive uses when it comes to screen time and toddlers. >> yeah, absolutely, and we don't hear about that that often. but there are some studies that show improvement in motor function, particularly fine motor skills with video games, actually leading to some things that could be good surgical skills so, again, i think the key is moderation and it's not one size fits all. you have to tailor this to the right age group. >> right. so the flip side, what are the

risks of too much screen time? >> listen, this is on the forefront of the american academy of pediatrics and they have new guidelines and basically for babies and toddlers under 18 months they are clear, video-chatting only. they want this to be used to communicate with people who can't actually be with the toddler. 18 to 24 months high-quality programming only and watch it together. don't park your toddler in front of the screen. >> unless it's "good morning america." >> of course. that goes without saying. and then 2 to 5 years old, a maximum of one hour a day. but, again, in the world of psychology, there's a whole area that says we're hearing too much negative with heavy use, yes, but with moderation, it can be good. >> with everything, moderation. >> that's correct. >> thanks so much. >> you bet. >> michael. thank you, robin. now to the holiday shopping season. it's a week shorter this year and already kicking into high gear. amazon, walmart and more announcing new delivery deals

[ cheers and applause ] we are back now with bob woodruff and we mentioned the 13th annual stand up for heroes event. the bob woodruff foundation holds it to honor veterans. the foundation has also been working with the nfl to show appreciation for our military vets in another way, and, bob, you'll tell us all about that right now. >> first of all, i don't know if you actually remember, you

hosted the show back in 2012. >> yes, i remember. >> it was a home run for you. a huge supporter. the nfl has been gigantic lebrating that right now [ applse so now we are -- our foundation, we're working closely together with the nfl to try to put those greatest players in contact with there are gigantic fans. >> that's awesome. >> reporter: in 2006 michael cathcart made a decision that changed the course of his life forever. >> i went to the recruiter's office and kind of the rest is history. >> reporter: enlisting in the navy and just three years later deployed to the arabian sea in support of "operation enduring freedom". >> we were providing the army on the ground air support. >> reporter: thousands of miles from home, homesickness set in and it was sundays with his battalion watching the giants that brought camaraderie and made it feel like home. but what really brought him joy was meeting the love of his life, star, who served as well.

>> my wife was coming off leave so that was the first time i met her, saw her. i was like, i got to ask this girl out on a date. cathcart left the military and faced another challenge, life after the navy. >> when you're in the military, you're very sure of your role. you're very sure of your purpose. you come back to civilian life and it's almost like having to start over again. you kind of lose your identity. >> reporter: cathcart is not alone. the transition from military to civilian life can be extremely difficult, which is why the nfl partners with the nonprofit partners like the bob woodruff foundation are funding programs and providing resources that positively impact veterans, active duty military and their families. this season the nfl and its players are honoring those who serve our country through huddle for 100 where fans are joining nfl players in writing letters to those who served like
