closely it the contest for district attorney which has been fascinating. according to the latest numbers, suzie loftus increased her lead. >> there were four candidates to start. the votes are down to loftus and boudin. more than 2200 votes separate the two at this point. the margin was down to 240 votes. vic lee is live at city hall with the latest for us. vic? >> reporter: suzie loftus has built up her lead. but, remember, there's still lots of votes to be counted. in the meantime, as you said, there's a controversial election night party video that surfaced and that is causing all of the buzz. >> i was on the street up until the polls closed talking to people or making their decisions. >> the last-minute campaigning

helped suzie loftus take the lead. even though it was only 240 votes more than her closest opponent, deputy public defender, chess a bow down. former chief -- declined our request for an interview but sent a statement saying regardless of the outcome of this election there's a lot to be grateful for. we live in the greatest city on earth. it's a city i grew up where i'm raising my children. boud inwas leading. loftus edged him out. still, he was optimistic he would be elected because they were hungry for his message. >> for a message of reform, for a more humane approach. >> on a day after the elections, this cell phone video was going viral. a video taken at boudin's election night party where some

supporters shouted derogatory chants at the police -- among them sandra leo owe he said he wasn't in the room and it was coarse language and it reflected what many san franciscans think. >> supervisor fewer later sent this apology to rank and file officers but refused to apologize to the police officer association leadership. this from tony montoya. >> she said poa. that is the rank and file of the police officers association. her nonapology, she can keep it. >> reporter: while this controversy continues, the ballot counting goes on. there are still some 70,000 ballots to be counted. there are mail-ins. absentee ballots and provisional ballots. we may not get the results until the middle or the end of next

week. vic lee, abc 7 news. okay. thanks, vic, very much. meantime, certainly no surprise here. san francisco mayor london breed successfully won her re-election bid. wasn't much of a contest. we knew this would happen. breed got more than 70% of the vote. ellen zhou had 16% and ka had more than 8% of the vote. mayor breed visited the lady shaw senior center in the cinatown neighborhood. this is an independent living apartment complex for low-income seniors. the mayor brought a message of hope and positivity. >> we'll be able to get so many great things done in san francisco together. we know that there continues to be challenges. but i'm optimistic about the future. i'm excited about the future. i want you all to know that every single day that i work, i'm going to be working to make san francisco better for all of us. >> mayor breed spoke and helped

to serve lunch, as you can see. >> a few other races are close. the district supervisor, district 5 supervisor's race, brown is ahead. that's a change from earlier today. we've been watching this closely. she has just over 50.3% of the -- it's very close. prop d that's a tax on rideshare services. it's too close to call. it needs a 2/3 majority to pass. yes is leading with a little over 66.7% of the vote. revenue would go to transportation and ifrastructure improvements. prop a an affordable housing bond on track to pass. this is something mayor breed pushed for and supports it. that needs 2/3 majority to pass. it currently has 69% of the vote. you can look up the results for all the races at abc7news.com. we have it there for you.

the presidential primary is less than 120 days away. california secretary of state alex padilla talked about his outlook and gave an update on voter registration. he says as of october 1st. more than 20.3 million californians are registered to vote. that's a new record. >> record registration, folks. record excitement. record turnout in 2020. >> if you want to vote in the primary. reg station must be postmarked or submitted electronically by february 17th. the primary election date is march 3, 2020. now to stories involving three big bay area tech companies. twitter, facebook and airbnb. let's begin with twitter. two former twitter employees are accused of spying. u.s. prosecutors say the saudi government recruited ahmad -- and ali al za bar a a -- to get personal account information of

their critics. the complaint unsealed today in san francisco detailed a coordinated by saudi officials to recruit employees to look up the private data of thousands of twitter accounts. the employees allegedly received designer watches and tens of thousands of dollars funneled into secret bank accounts. california attorney general javier becerra said an investigation into facebook business practices has been under way for more than a year. the investigation is meant to determine if the social network violated any laws involving privacy and third-party access to user data. his announcement came after he went to court asking a san francisco judge to enforce subpoenas, he claims facebook has been ignoring. >> we've asked for information regarding the effect of the company's various privacy settings on third parties' access to data, including which apps facebook granted access to user data despite users restricting access to their information.

becerra says facebook has ignored requests for communications from top officials including mark zuckerberg. they denied the claims saying it has cooperated extensively and provided thousands of pages of written responses and documents. now to airbnb. it's been partial i banned in orinda after a house party on halloween night after a shooting left five people dead. laura anthony joins us with more. >> reporter: hi, ama. they've made immediate changes in the wake of the shooting. in the meantime, those who lost loved ones are just beginning to grieve. >> he was an amazing person. he was probably one of the most innocent souls ever on this earth. >> she's the mother omar taylor's young daughter. he was among five people gunned down at an orinda house party on

halloween. my daughter is only three. she had three years with her dad. >> they did not respond to complaints about the party earlier because their officers we responding as part of mutual aid to a violent home invasion in lafayette. >> i wish the party had more security, are had security. i wish when the police first got the call that it was too noisy they would have came. >> top violent crimes at the same time is unusual. our police staffing is set up so our officers help each other. this was just an event where it was very, very unusual confluence of events. >> banning airbnb is not a solution. >> reporter: despite opposition, the orinda city council instructed staff to draft a temporary ban on unhosted short-term rentals. homes like the one where the shootings happened. >> there was a tragedy on halloween night. >> in the meantime, airbnb ceo brian chesky announced his company is taking several stems to avoid unmonitored situations

like the one in orinda. >> a 24/7 where any neighbor in any town in any part of the world can call us. staffed by real people. not automated. a rapid response team trained by police chiefs to make sure that we can deal in a timely manner with complaints. >> reporter: now, that temporary ban on unhosted rentals isn't official yet. but the council is expected to formalize it, to approve it at its next meeting here in two weeks. in the meantime, police have not announced any arrests. in orinda, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> laura, thank you. customs and border protection agents caught two murder suspects who escaped from jail in salinas. we got this video of the two being returned to jail. they were caught about midnight at the u.s./mexico border.

>> we had received information that they were in the area of tijuana. once we received that information, we notified customs border and protection agency. they were able to locate them trying to walk back into the country. >> the inmates escaped sunday climbing out of this hole they cut in the ceiling of the facility. it was just 22 inches wide. something out of a movie, right? they made it out of a crawl space into a hatch under construction where there was no razor wire. the escapees made it to mexico but were captured making it back into the united states. one of the most popular stories has been the pictures showing how this jail break happened. you can find them on our website. abc7news.com. new at 6:00, two arrests "today in the bay" area on child pornography choorjs. they arrested nicholas they found nude photographs on

you've probably heard us talk about building a better bay area. it's our mission, our guiding principle to talk about the issues and changes that affect your quality of life. one of the things we love to talk about living in the bay area is diversity. the variety of neighborhoos that make up a city. tonight we're talking about the haze valley neighborhood in san francisco. just a few blocks in the western addition centered around hayes street -- it's filled with boutique stores. that's been on purpose and that's about to change. here's abc 7 news reporter reyes explains. >> i've owned it since 2003. >> i saw the opportunity, jumped on it and 24 years later.'s bee. >> i have a small business. we've been here for 25 years. seen the change.

east bay hills camera. it's 55 right now at santa rosa. mid-50s at petaluma. napa 57 at fairfield and low 60s at concord and livermore. here's the view from sutro tower over san francisco. you can see a hit of low clouds beginning to push out over the city. here's the forecast features. low clouds, no secret now. return to the coast overnight. minor warming begins tomorrow. it will be even warmer under sunny skies in the days ahead right on through the weekend. overnight, under mainly clear skies inland. a little fog at the coast. temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. chillier in the north bay valleys. lows drop into the upper 30s in a few spots including santa rosa. mainly sunny skies along much of the coastline. highs ranging from low 60s at the coast to the low and mid-70s aong the bay shoreline. mainly upper 70s to near 80 inland tomorrow. on friday, warming continues. low to mid-80s inland. low to mid-70s around the bay.

on the coast, relatively cool. further warming on saturday. quite warm for november. but there will be slightly cooler weather settling in on sunday by just a few degrees. now, the climate prediction center issued its outlook for the next 6 to 10 days for precipitation. it's going to be no secret here. mainly dry. that's the outlook for california including the bay area. in the east and southeast, we expect a wetter pattern. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. sunny skies with an unnovember-like warmup. friday and saturday with low to mid-830s inland and mid-to upper 70s around the bay. it starts to get gradually cooler. veterans day on monday. weather looks mild and sunniment. we'll have further cooling on tuesday and wednesday.

close, but not quite. stocks failed to set new records. the dow dipped less than a point from yesterday's record close. the nasdaq dropped about 24 points. the s&p gained 2. stocks are soaring after the wall street target -- xerox has been struggling as consumers increasingly use digital documents instead of paper. heads up if you're flying out of san francisco international airport tomorrow. you'll see a live picture over my shoulder. we already know of two canceled flights, one arrival and one departure because of an airline strike. the union representing cabin crew for germany's biggest airline, louvre tan saah will not work because of a pay dispute. 1300 flights are canceled, including thursday between sfo and frankfort.

story. in the bay area's largest city, a major groundbreaking that's been a long-time coming. at at 300 feet and 19 stories, 200 park will become the tallest building in 2023. it's at the corner of park avenue. it will be the first office tower built on a spec basis. >> there are residents much h h high -- >> builders tended to go where they could get hiher rents. >> the project's approval is after the city council voted to raise building height limits downtown over the objections of mineta san jose airport commissioners. they cited safety concerns and financial viability. lightening passenger load to ensure planes are light enough to clear buildings in the event of an emergency. those who support the concept of building up say the change gives the city a better chance of

landing larger scale projects like 200 park in the future. >> if you're allowed to go taller, you can do different things with architecture. you can have a denser building, you can go up instead of pushing down and out. >> veteran developer jay paul is behind the striking tower expected to total 875,000 square feet with room for more than 4,000 employees. multiple terraces and -- it will provide natural lighting on every floor. >> they want the excitement of the city with the housing and the business and all the entertainment and restaurants right by where they work. that's, i think, the component that's going to make san jose a really great success. >> a calculated risk that could forever change the city's downtown core. >> we certainly struggled through a lot of recessions. now, we're starting to really catch fire. >> in san jose, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. san jose's new office tower reflects a change in its

planning that emphasizes building downtown highrises rear rather than encouraging urban sprawl. while there was a great housing need, they've decided open space is important to building a better bay area. abc 7 news reporter david louie shows you why coyote valley will not be developed. >> reporter: there was a time plans called to build 25,000 new houses in coyote valley. one of the large he's areas of undeveloped land in san jose. the great recession created unemployment and hit city budgets. environmental groups argued these thousands of acres should be open space. the city council decided to spend money to acquire 937 acres in the vicinity of bailey avenue and santa teresa boulevard. >> we turn the page on north -- the chapter that recognizes the inherent value of our atlanta and the importance of protect

it. >> it's worth $93 million. additional funding is coming from the peninsula open space trust and the santa clara valley open space authority. the acreage is being sold by a private landowner and private developer. >> as you can see from this sign, the land is still in private ownership. the goal someday after a master planning process, the land could be preserved as agricultural loond, used for hiking for the public or flood control. >> wildlife will benefit. bobcats, coyotes and deer cross this habitat to migrate migrateg the santa cruz mountains and the diablo range. >> those are protected lands. we hope to now take this incredible block of land and connect it all the way through -- >> even the strongest advocates for more housing such as carl guardino say open space is -- preserving open space reflects an effort to curb urban sprawl and focus on building new

containment is currently close to 90%. the fire has burned nearly 78,000 acres since it started two weeks ago. 174 homes have been destroyed. today, cal fire tweeted a video to say thanks. >> if it wasn't for two things, we would have been unsuccessful on our side. specifically, thank you for leaving early when the evacuation orders and warnings were sent. firefighters were able to defend your homes and your communities knowing that there weren't people inside. second, thank you for all the defense fence believe space and clearance around your structures. not only did it allow your structure to survive, but it also gave firefighters some defensible area to be saved. >> remarkable work. one man is sharing his thanks for firefighters in three minutes. they saved a lifetime of memories. here's what hppened. when firefighters arrived, jeff thompson's dream home near geyserville was fully engulfed in flames. but when they looked inside,
