sonoma county and 174 homes 174s lost. good evening, thank you for joining us. now to developing news. >> that's right. two twitter employees have been charged with spying for saudi arabia. this is the first time a u.s. attorney has accused government of spying on american. >> reporter: well, it's another example of a foreign power exploiting an american social media company. and while we don't know what the saudis did with the private information of thousands of twitter users, we do know that they targeted their critics. now, tonight i spoke to the reporter based here in san francisco who broke the story. >> twitter has just been a successful platform for people critical of the saudi royal family. >> reporter: according to prosecutors two twitter employees acting at the behest of saudi officials looked up personal information of twitter users.

>> one of it twitter employees was paid directly by the saudi family for his services. another looked up 6,000 accounts or more all at the interest of the saudi government. >> reporter: he broke the story a day after this criminal complaint was filed against the twitter employees. a u.s. citizen and former bay area resident, he was arrested on tuesday. in addition to money he allegedly accepted a designer watch from a saudi official. now a saudi citizen is presumably back in the middle east. one of the twitter accounts he allegedy hacked belonged to a prominent saudi dissident who was close to jamal khashoggi, "the washington post" columnist who was assassinated in istanbul last year. >> most of the hacking happens inside the companies rather than comes from outside. >> reporter: the cyber security expert and chair of the security science program. he thinks the u.s. government needs to regulate big tech. >> we have to question the

ability of the tech companies in the united states, how they are providing the privacy and security for their users' data. >> reporter: now, twitter put out a statement which says in part we recognize the lengths bad actors will go to try and undermine our service. we're committed to protecting those who use our service to advocate for equality, individual freedoms and human rights. new developments, airbnb is promising worldwide changes in the wake of that terrible shooting at a rental that left five people dead. among the changes announced today the company will verify 100% of listings and have a 24/7 neighbor hot line. the city council has also instructed staff to draft a temporary ban on unhosted short-term rentals. one of the men killed in the shooting, the mother of his

you when did downtown richmond turn around? this is it right here. >> reporter: a new renaissance for the city and anyone with ideas. >> it's exciting. improving street safety is also part of building a better bay area and the focus tonight was a main artery in san francisco. it's a common route to get onto the freeway, the project is intended to decrease traffic, support bus access and create bike lanes. 20 parking spaces would be eliminate and a block of paved street would become one way westbound. >> we're working to see what we can do with these proposal to divert traffic while still making sure people can move around the neighborhood and we're not causing undo burden on other streets. >> a pilot program is set to begin next year. building a better bay area requires adequate infrastructure, of course.

in san jose some drivers say one stretch of 101 is causing concern. puddles are causing massive mase potholes. abc 7 news reporter amanda del c castillo live with the story tonight. >> reporter: my that, and we looked for the pothole and didn't see it until it was directly in front of us. most drivers are familiar with the standing water, but take the carpool lane heading south and you're sure to hit this sizable pothole. >> the problem is it's submerged in water so you can't even really see it. >> reporter: dozens chimed in about close call and potential dangerous, so we took a drive. this view is from the oakland road overpass.

in traffic cars are carefully driving through the dip. but at full speed she believes the pothole has the potential to be dead lee. >> cal trans is very aware of the problem, they say this area is under constant observation. below the surface, a water table. they've even had to install ten pumps to direct water away to nearby creeks and rivers. around 10.5 million gallons are being pumped out per day. >> the water seeks through any cracks or obstructions in the surface and comes up to the top. that's what we're working with. >> reporter: a challenge creating these hidden potholes and a wet surface creating safety. >> the area does have to be dry, and we'll go ahead and do just our normal maintenance if we have to go and shutdown a lane. >> it's a band-aid and they've continued patching it up multiple times so i appreciate the effort but it's clearly not

. new at 11:00, one person is dead and two more are hurt after a shooting at a church's chicken in san diego county. witnesses told police the shooter was a customer today at the store in otay mesa. local media reports he tried to pay with a counterfeit $100 bill and was denied. he left and came back a few minutes later and opened fired on the workers. officers are still searching for the man. two escaped inmates are back where they belong in custody after three days on the run. they were caught at the u.s.-mexico border overnight, tried to come back into the united states. the murder suspects escaped sunday morning. the pair had cut a hole in the facility's ceiling before crawling to freedom. should a school day be as

long as the workday? senator kamala harris is proposing a bill to make that reality. to be clear, this would not impact every school. in the proposal for a pilot program 500 schools serving mainly low income families would get up to $5 mill wherein over five years to keep their doors open until 6:00 p.m. her argument is the current school day ends hours before 70% of parents and their workday. while we're talking about teachers and schools, a pittsburgh second grade teacher has taken a groaned up song and reworked it into an up lifting rap about friendship, learning and achievement. people are going crazy about this. abc 7 anchor eric thomas shows you what the teacher has done with her version. >> reporter: the original hit by lizzo is about a romance gone bad and features adult lyrics. >> i heard this song over the summer, loved it.

that was a great video, by the way. let me show you exploratorium camera time lapse from earlier tonight emphasis this was a short time ago watching that fog rolling in. notice how low it is close to the ground just like the last couple of mornings. we're going to be seeing this which is reduced visibility. so your morning commute planner, use caution. foggy areas if you're driving, light chop if you're taking the ferry across the bay. it is going to be cool so grab a jacket before you go. that fog has pushed into the north bay, into the east bay. petaluma you've now gone to zero so it is pretty thick already. definitely watch out. temperatures right now anywhere from the 40s to the 50s. lot gatos, a little bit milder. and as we take a look at what's ahead, first let's start with tomorrow. temperatures will be changing. we'll be looking at warmer conditions. concord going from 73 today to 78 tomorrow, 5 degrees warmer.
