[ laughter ] we'll go to washington now and the latest on the impeachment showdown. democrats stepping up the pressure on president trump announcing the first public hearings next week and releasing the testimony of a key witness detailing a quid pro quo with ukraine. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega is tracking it all and we're also learning that the president asked attorney general barr to hold a press conference to clear the president of wrongdoing.

>> reporter: he didn't go through with it on television and basically clear the president's name but this just seems to be the latest example of president trump attempting to use the justice department for his own personal gain. overnight, president trump fired up about impeachment. >> it's all a hoax, it's a scam. >> reporter: this morning, abc news learned the president is so frustrated by the controversy he asked that attorney general william barr hold a press conference to clear his name and say he broke no laws in that now-infamous phone call with ukraine. it happened in september when the white house released its summary of that call. sources say barr declined the request. in recent weeks the president has mentioned barr's refusal to associates saying he wished the attorney general would have followed his wishes. overnight, president trump lashing out on twitter calling the story totally untrue. >> but while we are delivering safety and prosperity for americans, the radical left democrats are trying to rip our nation apart. >> reporter: it comes as

democrats now plan to take their case directly to the american people, calling on key witnesses to publicly testify next week. the top american diplomat to ukraine, bill taylor, up first, his closed door testimony now made public as well. taylor telling lawmakers the president outsourced ukraine policy to his personal attorney, rudy giuliani. taylor saying it was his, quote, clear understanding that ukraine would not receive military aid until they agreed to investigate the president's political rivals. taylor laying out a quid pro quo but republicans still struggling to mount a defense for the president. and you heard the president there overnight out there on the campaign trail sounding confident saying impeachment will basically backfire on democrats and give him a boost in 2020, but we now know the white house is beefing up for this impeachment bringing on two of the president's allies to its team. george, their job is going to be basically to fight this fight in the public. >> cecilia, we have news from the president's first attorney

general, jeff sessions, set to announce today he'll run for his old senate seat in alabama and so many eyes now on president trump and the white house because he had such a tumultuous relationship with sessions. >> reporter: exactly and, george, this announcement is going to come on the one-year anniversary of the day that sessions was fired as attorney general. you'll remember the president was not happy, livid in fact, that sessions recused himself from the mueller probe and he's called him a disaster, a disgrace, and the biggest mistake of his presidency. while he enjoys popularity in alabama not much in the white house. as cecilia noted those hearings begin next week. senior national correspondent terry moran is there with a look at what we can expect. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, robin. there's no greater drama here on capitol hill than public hearings on the impeachment of a president.

it's part warfare and the stakes could not be higher for president trump and for our country. democrats are lining up their witnesses ne wk' >> public impeachment hearings. >> reporter: and keeping an eye on the millions of americans who will tune in to watch. >> those open hearings will be an opportunity for the american people to evaluate the witnesses for themselves but also to learn firsthand about the president. >> reporter: those first rounds of public hearings starting next wednesday will be held by the house intelligence committee to lay out the evidence. democratic chairman, adam schiff, a former prosecutor, is planning to keep it tight. just a handful of witnesses in several hearings over the next few weeks and under the rules democrats can block any republican subpoenas. republicans including senator lindsey graham are railing at the process. >> the whole process is a joke. i'm not buying into schiff

running a legitimate operation over there. >> reporter: during the bill clinton impeachment -- >> i was called upon to give you my judgment. >> reporter: the only major witness was independent counsel ken starr, the prosecutor. this time people inside the trump administration will be called to testify. schiff's committee will write a report summarizing the evidence and turn it over to the judiciary committee under jerry nad ler and white house lawyers will be able to make their case and cross-examine witnesses. then the judiciary committee will draft articles of impeachment, the actual charges against president trump, abuse of power will be at the top of the list, they say and vote. a solemn moment in the richard nixon impeachment, some struggled to control their emotions. >> mr. rodino. >> aye. >> reporter: i remember watching that moment as a kid. we can clear up some confusion about the word "impeachment" if the house of representatives votes by a simple majority to impeach that doesn't mean the

president is removed. that means there will be a trial in the senate and only if two-thirds of the senators vote would the president be removed. something americans have never done. >> many steps to go. thanks very much. we'll have live coverage of the impeachment hearings. they start at 10:00 eastern next wednesday. >> thank you, george. we turn now to new developments in that deadly ambush on an american family in mexico. officials are blaming drug cartels for the assault but there are new questions about whether the family was targeted. our chief national affairs correspondent tom llamas spoke with some of the relatives who took him inside their compound. good morning, tom. >> reporter: michael, good morning. this horrific incident has drawn a red line for several of the american families that live out here. this road is a major pipeline for the cartels to take drugs from mexico right into the u.s. and this is one of the only roads in and out of this community. while some families are debating whether to stay or live, they'll all be united at two funerals

for several of the victims. overnight, mexican military and police forces guarding the mormon compound where members of that american family took off from before being gunned down by a drug cartel. us uld ve imagin. >> reporter: kendra miller, the bride-to-be, it was her wedding in just days. that family was gathering to celebrate. now they're planning funerals set for later today. the family convinced their nine relatives including six children were gunned down to spark a new battle in an ongoing war between drug gangs. >> so you're saying your family was used as pawns. >> yes, the chihuahua cartel used our three women and all the children as a provocation to start a war between them and the sonora. >> reporter: investigators still don't know who exactly is responsible for the vicious ambush. mexican officials think drug traffickers mistook the family's

suvs as rivals traveling through this narco-infested section of mexico. the americans who are mormon fundamentalists have been here decades before the cartels took over. we were invited into the family's compound and what you notice immediately are all the children. why did you guys stay living here with all this drug violence surround you? >> there is a lot of goodness around us too. there is a people around here, a beautiful people. there's thugs around us, but most of the people are good people. >> reporter: julian, a relative, was tasked with finding the families after they realized something had gone wrong. he discovered one of the mother's, christina langford, suv. she said she was sprawled out on the road dead. in the passenger seat her baby named faith. julian shot this video when he found the infant. >> we opened the canopy and the baby was smiling at us and found the baby and underneath the car seat there were two more bullet holes.

>> reporter: now, we're also learning 13-year-old devin blake langford wasn't the only hero. the boy trekked for 14 miles after his family's car was attacked. his siblings bleeding from gunshot wounds. when he didn't return quickly, his 9-year-old sister set out as well walking for several hours when the family found her, she said my brothers are hurt. they need help. there's a large military presence still here in this area. you can see some troops moving just behind us. still no arrest and the sense we got from the family they're not confident that's going to happen any time soon. in this part of the country, the cartels are the ones that have the power. >> such a dangerous situation. okay, tom, thanks very much. we turn to that security scare at twitter. federal prosecutors have accused two former employs of manipulating the platform to spy for saudi arabia. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is in washington with details. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. it's a deeply disturbing story,

compromise of twitter employees willing to steal the private information of users who are seen as critics of the saudi government which the cia has accused of assassinating a "washington post" journal. twitter now part of so many users' lives. that users hope will be safe and protected. accusations from federal prosecutors that a saudi official bribed two former twitter employees to spy on users. the alleged targeted users, critics of the saudi government, accusations of bribes involving hundreds of thousands of dollars. >> the wake-up call here is not only for twitter but the other platforms to up their game and their personnel screening and to up their game in cybersecurity. >> reporter: the information potentially accessed includes address, phone numbers, and date of births. former twitter employee ahmad abouammo was accused. another suspect in the case, ali alzabarah and collected information on more than 6,000

foul play is suspected, but there is a massive and expanding search under way for aniah. this morning, the mother and stepfather of aniah blanchard are searching for answers. >> it is frustrating. it's been 14 days, going on 15 days, and we just want our daughter found. >> reporter: the 19-year-old went missing two weeks ago captured here on surveillance video at a convenience store. late wednesday, a possible break in the case. police releasing images of a man they call a person of interest. seen on surveillance video at the same convenience store where blanchard was last seen alive. two days after her disappearance her black suv was discovered damaged and parked here at an apartment complex about 50 miles away. police say they believe there were signs of foul play. >> what they're telling us is that they know that she was harmed in the car and maybe sustained severe injuries but that's all they're giving us. >> reporter: a dozen law enforcement agencies including the fbi and the department of homeland security are assisting in the investigation. blanchard's parents even meeting for the first time with beth

i mean, on the whole age question,he's an adult and hard to figure that out. >> it is, george. i don't think she knows. think about this, when you're a child coming from a group home where it's not like here they didn't celebrate every one of her birthdays in this group home. i don't think she knows how old she is. i think she knows the difference between 8 and 20. i don't know if she knows whether she was 8, 9, 11, 12. for her to say 16 i don't think she knows how old she is but she knows that she says now, according to the court, she would be 30 and i certainly don't think this individual is 30 years old. so i think the court has done a real miscarriage of justice here in re-aging her the way they have and i don't think that there's really medical support for that, but either way, this child -- the thing that bothers me, when you adopt a child, that child is yours. just the same as if you birthed that child at the time. >> you can't abandon them.

impeachment showdown. the democrats are stepping up the pressure on president trump as newly revealed testimony points to a quid pro quo with ukraine. public hearings starting next week. want to go back the our senior white house correspondent, cecilia vega, and cecilia, the president is lashing out at those reports his attorney general william barr refused to publicly clear the president of wrongdoing. >> reporter: exactly. he's fired up and tweeting about it this morning but the back story on this one. sources are telling our team that in september the president was so frustrated by this impeachment controversy he asked bill barr, the attorney general to hold a press conference and say that he broke no laws in that now infamous phone call with ukraine. in recent weeks we're told by sources that the president has mentioned barr's refusal to associates saying he'd wished he carried out his wishes. now, you mention the president is livid this morning. he's firing off on twitter saying it is untrue. take a look at a tweet from him just now, bill barr did not decline my request to talk about ukraine. the justice department already ruled that call was good. now, what the justice department said was that the president did not break any campaign finance

the 2019 holiday season as you just heard us say earlier, it is officially under way, and the trend this year for trees is pretty in pink. yep, the online design company w wayfair is reporting a 125% increase in pink tree sales. no, it's not traditional, but we think it's a better version than last year's trend, the black tree. lovely very chic but not very festive. this one is being called millennial pink. we have found several shades offered online. it went online this morning, hot pink, purply fuchsia and a rose gold christmas tree if you're interested. some of them are pre-lit which is kind of lovely. if you are pining for pink, these trees are available on retail sites like walmart, amazon, wayfair, and range from, i saw $34 all the way up to $500.

fake celebrity endorsements and they filed a lawsuit targeting websites that use their images for false advertising, and this is something both of you, robin and lara, have to deal with. diane macedo has details. >> reporter: good morning to you all. ellen and sandra bullock say they have spent the last two years battling this behind the scenes but now they're taking it to court. targeting 100 companies they say are stealing from celebrities and scamming consumers. overnight ellen filing a lawsuit that's no laughing matter. >> i don't know. i just -- i don't know these people. >> reporter: the comedy star and talk show host is suing over what she says is false advertising taking aim at pop-up websites using her name and likeness for product endorsements along with sandra bullock, the two stars suing in an attempt to, quote, expose the celebrity endorsement theft industry which preys upon unsuspecting consumers and exploits the names, images, likenesses and personas of

are people that i share my ito tho -- ethos with. they have forged the pillars of belief in my life and i want to see them succeed because i believe they should be honored. 20 vets a day commit suicide. that's almost one an hour. that's not a good stat. i want to bring it to zero. i found a charitable organization that re-educates and kind of refamiliarizes veterans with life after the uniform. and they have a tremendous success rate. i've been to the camps. it's moved me so much that i was like, man, i want to donate my time, my presence and my resource but i also ask everybody to do the same because i know there's a lot of people that think like me so asked the community let's do something special. i'll match every dollar you give up to a million bucks so if you give a million, i'll give a million. and we'll make the donation on veterans day, a day we're supposed to remember what all
