in san francisco where a new secret service study shows most school shootings are preventable. this special room has been dedicate today a boy and his mother who were killed by a hit-and-run driver. i'll tell you why this is the least stressed out city in the country. abc 7 news starts right now. new at 11:00, preventing school shootings. it's possible according to a just released report by the u.s. secret service. >> the report found there were warning signs before each attack. >> that's true. the big take away is if you see something, say something. it seems simple enough but according to experts it can save lives. sandy hook, marjory stoneman douglas, columbine, notable

shootings where many livess were lois and now the secret service most of these incidents could have been prevented. >> every single attacker had engaged in concerning behavior. >> reporter: oftentimes the attacker made threats, made comments or was depressed. oftentimes they communicated their intent two weeks prior to the attack. >> it doesn't happen out of thin air. no one starts to shoot people. there's got to be some history and there needs to be some reporting. >> reporter: the study also found many of the attackers had been bullied. >> bullying can happen anywhere. >> reporter: founder of the anti-bu anti-bullying campaign, she says bu bullying can lead to consequences. >> you don't know what's going to be the final straw that's going to put them over the edge.

sometimes good and sometimes hard. >> today the pepperdine community dedicated an olive tree and her parents setup a voice foundation aimed at preventing others from being victims of gun violence. a victim's parents plan to file a wrongful death lawsuit against airbnb tomorrow. the family is also suing the owner of the rented home where violence erupted during a party last thursday. earlier today hill's family accused of airbnb of failing to keep a promise to help the victims families pay for funerals. airbnb responded saying it set aside a fund to help families pay for funerals and counseling. police have not made any arrests. a police officer's suspicions about a truck parked outside a store led to the arrests of two people in

mountain view. they face acswracusations of stealing equipment from local law enforcement agencies. detectives shared these pictures. a patrol officer confroned them on november 1st. officers then searched a u-haul truck. they discovered police gear and stolen license plates. the san mateo county sheriff's office says there have been 30 break in since monday. another 13 cars were burglarized between last night and this morning. the sheriff office is urging residents to take valuables out of their cars and to call 911 if you see anything suspicious. now to the local election. it's still too close to call in a pair of races shaping san francisco's future. in the district attorney's race interim da suzy loftus has

50.33% of the vote. so close, just 879 votes separate the two. ranked choice voting will also determine the winner to represent district 5 on san francisco's board of supervisors. dean preston leads incumbent valley brown. ballot counting will likely continue through the middle of the week. you can look up all the local election results on our website. just go to abc7news.com. in the east bay oakland is ramping up safety improvements after a deadly hit-and-run. kate larson was at the scene of a crash where a local business dedicated a space to the victims. ♪ how do i say good-bye >> reporter: a community in oakland is still grieving for one of their families ripped apart by a hit-and-run driver seven months ago. 6-year-old angel vasquez and his

mother and his uncle were all hit while they crossed foothill boulevard at 26th avenue around 7:00 at night on april 13th. paramedics tried to resuscitate the family but angel and alma died. they were leading the when they were hit. she dedicated a reading room to the family. she says the family has been trying to support the family's father and two surviving children. right after the crash oakland's department of transportation installed these plastic posts and painted a pedestrian island in the middle of the intersection. as a dedication they're making more improvements to this area. >> we determined there'll be a new traffic signal constructed and then here at foothill and 26th avenue we'll be installing flashing yellow lights.

200,000 people to alameda county every year, many who line up down the block. >> we serve the homeless, some of the working class people, you know, what they make just don't meet all the needs. >> i don't have any food. they take so long to give me check every third wednesday. >> reporter: this year with the holidays quickly unexpected is throwing a wrench in their plans. >> we don't have enough transportation to go pick up everything. >> reporter: their large box van already old and broken in two countless times have already died and their other two are on their last legs. they've become so run-down her brothery worries about his sister's safety. >> we make pickups all over the bay area, cross the bridge and whatnot. will she be able to get back? and there have been times she's called me, the van has broke down. >> reporter: already unable to pay their volunteers most of

our crews went over it today and report it's now gone. on the peninsula a home security camera captured video of a mountain lion in san bruno. there you see that dark tip of its tale. the big cat visited a backyard in the rolling wood neighborhood several days ago. mountain lions often prey on deer. so the best way to keep mountain lions away from home is to avoid planting landscape that deer like to eat. makes sense. >> i love roses in the yard the deer like to eat but i've not seen a mounten lion. let's turn our attention to the weekend forecast. >> the weekend will include some fog. right now i want to show you time lapse. watch that fog as it rolls in over san francisco. sales force tower a little obscured at times. and visibility has been dropping because of the fog. in case you were wondering what

to expect, that is just a little glimpse of what's to come for your morning commute. we've been dealing with the fog the last couple of mornings and this weekend. we'll continue that pattern. fog giving way to sunshine. temperatures at the coast low 60s. mild by november standards around the bay and inland. a live look right now from our sfo camera. could experience some more delays tomorrow because of low ceilings. we saw that happen today. live doppler 7 showing you a bigger marine push. now the marine layer has deepened to 2,000 feet. that allows it to spill over. so tomorrow morning watch out. visibility already down to a mile in napa, 2 miles in santa rosa. so tomorrow morning, 5:00 a.m., you're going to see visibility drop to 5 miles in san francisco. as we head through the morning commute visibility will still be low until later in the morning when it comes up to about 10 miles right around noontime in
