kenneth and janai. michael bloomberg has not confirmed he's running however abc news has learned that today he will file to run in at least one state's presidential primary. aides say he is keeping his options open. meanwhile, experts say it's a sign he's not happy with the current democratic field. this morning former new york city mayor michael bloomberg sending a jolt through the presidential race. abc news has confirmed the billionaire plans to file paperwork today just before the approaching deadline. >> this is the biggest step yet he has made toward becoming a candidate. >> reporter: bloomberg, an outspoken critic of president trump spoke to msnbc in august questioning the strength of the democratic candidates. >> i think a lot of the pandering on some of the more liberal things, wouldn't want it. the public does not want revolutionary change.

it wants evolutionary change. >> reporter: overnight a top bloomberg adviser tweeted in part, we now need to finish the job and ensure trump is defeated but mike is increasingly concerned that the current field is not positioned to do that. if he runs he would offer a new choice to democrats. originally a lifelong democrat bloomberg has changed party affiliations over the years running for new york city mayor in 2001 as a republican and becoming an independent and last year reregistering as a democrat. >> there are a number of moderates in the race already that are trying to position themselves as an alternative to those progressives so he could add another name to that pile and really divide up that vote. >> reporter: both bernie sanders and elizabeth warren have made an issue of going after billionaires like bloomberg with a wealth tax and inheritance tax. >> it's not enough just to have somebody come in, anybody, and say that they're buying this election. >> reporter: though it's relatively late in the game, the latest poll found that 50% of democratic voters said while they might favor someone, they were willing to switch their opinion later.

janai. >> we'll watch to see the reaction to another new york city billionaire. andrea, thank you. meanwhile, we're getting our first hook at the new book about the trump administration called "a warning." the author is identified only as a senior administration official. according to "the washington post," the book details a plan by several white house officials last year to resign in what they called a midnight self-massacre to protest president trump's fitness for office. but they reportedly rejected the idea because it would cause too much chaos. the author goes on to describe the president, quote, like a 12-year-old in an air traffic control power pushing the buttons indiscriminately imdifferent tohe planes skidding across the runway. the white house has called the author a coward and says the book is a work of fiction. acting white house chief of staff mick mulvaney is expected to be a no show on capitol hill today, subpoenaed by the house intelligence committee to answer

questions in the impeachment investigation. a senior adviser to mulvaney also refused to testify. one year after being fired by president trump, former attorney general jeff sessions announced he's running for his old senate seat in alabama. despite their rocky past sessions had nothing but praise for the president during a campaign video and on fox news last night. >> when i left president trump's cabinet, did i write a tell all book? no. did i go on cnn and attack the president? nope. have i said a cross word about our president? not one time. >> he has your strong support. do you have his strong support? >> well, i hope so. i think he will respect my work. i was there for the trump agenda every day. i was in the senate, no doubt about it. i was the first republican -- first senator to endorse him. >> "the new york times" reports president trump recently made it clear that he would not support sessions. a worker at a buffalo wild wings restaurant near boston died after what's being called a chemical incident in the kitchen. at least eight other employees

and two customers have been hospitalized. the fire department says the worker inhaled fumes from a strong chemical cleaning substance called super 8 which has a high concentration of chlorine. we turn to the tears and heartbreak in mexico. funerals begin for the american victims of a highway ambush and for the first time we saw the young boy who helped saved lives of so many family members. abc's marci gonzalez explains why this is tack is called a case of mistaken identity. >> reporter: hundreds in tears at the first funeral for members of an american family murdered in mexico. donna ray langford and her two young sons' caskets carried out. her older son serving as a pallbearer after walking 14 miles to get help for his family after the attack. relatives sharing new video of the aftermath of that massacre. >> they shot down from the top. >> reporter: and now questioning whether all nine victims were targeted by a drug cartel. the family caravanning to kendra miller's wedding monday when

they were ambushed. the bride-to-be telling abc's tom llamas she believes the three women and six children were gunned down to spark a new battle in an ongoing war between drug gangs. >> so you're saying your family was used as pawns. >> yes. the chihuahua cartel used our three women and all the children as a provocation to start a war between them and the sonora. >> reporter: military and police now guarding the family's mormon compound in northwest mexico as they try to track down the killers. and still no suspects have been named and mexican officials maintain their belief that drug traffickers likely mistook them for rivals because of the type of vehicles they were traveling in. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. all right, turning to the weather, millions of americans are bracing for bitter cold today. some could see record low temperatures. let's take a look at your friday forecast.

we, the jury find the defendant, raymond g. lazarine, guilty. >> a jury has convicted a texas man who says he was sleepwalking when he shot his wife. raymond lazarine claimed his actions were involuntary because of a medical condition that causes him to sleepwalk, but jurors didn't buy it. they convicted him of murder. he could now face life in prison. now to the people rebuilding paradise on the anniversary of the most destructive wildfire in california's history. the camp fire raced through the town of paradise one year ago today. most of the 14,000 homes have not been rebuilt. crews have removed nearly 4 million tons of debris, twice the amount removed from the world trade center after 9/11. one woman decided to return to

back now with the fiery plane crash outside los angeles. the pilot was killed when the single engine aircraft slammed into a home. a neighbor says the man in that house ran and grabbed his 18-month-old son and raced him to safety. just last week three people died in two separate tragedies involving small planes crashing into homes. one was in new jersey. the other one in georgia. we turn now to a star athlete's explosive new claim

and physically abused her. >> i was weighed in front of teammates. i was told i was five pounds too heavy. cain claims she was constantly told to lose weight. she says because of the alleged treatment, she suffered five broken bones, didn't have a period for three years and had suicidal thoughts. >> i usually cut my legs because i hated them for not running faster for not doing better. >> reporter: nike shut down its oregon project last month after the u.s. doping agency suspended coach salazar saying an investigation found multiple anti-doping rule violations. this morning, nike is denying cain's allegations saying, these are deeply troubling allegations which have not been raised by mary or her parents before, adding mary was seeking to rejoin the oregon project and alberto's team as recently as april of this year and had not raised these concerns as part of that process. cain says she's still training

in hopes to make the olympics in tokyo next summer. you can hear more from her coming up on "good morning america." louisiana senator john kennedy is refusing to back down from a blistering attack he launched against house speaker nancy pelosi. if you missed it, here's what he said at a rally in louisiana while standing next to president trump. >> speaker nancy pelosi is trying to impeach him. too smart and too tough to let kennedy's remarks affect her. the driver of a racing boat is speaking out after this. two boats flipped over during this race. look at that in key west, florida. four people are on the boats. all of them survived. the driver explained how he and his passenger got out alive. >> the first thing we did was unlatch our five-point harness and try to come through the bottom hatch of the boat which at that point is right side up so we could escape. seemed like it lasted minutes but in reality it was only a matter of seconds from the time that we impacted to the time we escaped from the bottom. >> really incredible how those boats both flipped over like that. remarkably the worst injury suffered by anyone on the boats was an ankle sprain. in sport the raiders won the thriller against the chargers. oakland's winning touchdown run came with one minute left in the game. they won it, 26-24.

be opening back up in about 30 minutes but also hearing that it looks like someone may be stuck inside one of the cars involved here. there's debris all over the roadway. want to take a live look at the san mateo bridge. we have a fog advisory here. also at the golden gate bridge and carquinez bridge. now developing news, the family of one of the men killed in that deadly shooting at an airbnb is planning to file a lawsuit. >> it comes as airbnb says it will pay for the victims funerals and counseling for the families. lauren martinez joins us live in the newsroom with that. >> according to the "san francisco chronicle," parents of one of the victims say that aibnb allowed dangerous party conditions that ultimately led to their son's death. now ramon hill sr. and cynthia taylor plan to file the suit today in contra costa superior
