well, it sounds nice. good morning, america. we don't need a song to tell us it's cold outside but it's creating debate. >> and a little bit of controversy there. the new version of "baby, it's cold outside" switches out some of the more controversial lyrics but some say it might be a little too politically correct. we'll let you hear it and decide for yourself coming up later in the show. >> george, as you said, as we battle with those lyrics, one thing for sure, oh, yeah, baby, it really is cold. temperatures plummeting from the midwest to the south and also here in the northeast. alex perez starts us off with the latest. >> reporter: overnight snowy, slick conditions covering streets, drivers in michigan making their way with snow covered windshields on icy roads. heavy rain and snow stretching across several states. temperatures even freezing an overpass. the icy bridge a stark contrast to the roads directly below.

snow also blanketing pennsylvania. plows clearing streets filled with slush and ice. roadways covered in white. drivers fighting strong winds, struggling to keep windshields clear. on this alabama highway a vehicle smashing into the median. the windshield shattered. both air bags deployed. luckily, no one hurt. and here in traverse city, it snowed overnight so people are waking up to a few inches of this stuff and the bitter cold. well, it's only about to tighten its grip, right, ginger? >> oh, alex, even to chicago, minneapolis, by early next week it will feel like january. not just below average like we're waking up this morning feeling like the upper 20s in manhattan. we are going to have our first freeze tonight. that's why we have a freeze warning by tomorrow morning. actual air temperature, 28 and freeze warnings go as deep south as mississippi and louisiana. tuscaloosa, alabama, you're in a freeze warning all because of that jet stream, guys.

it will kink just enough to allow the polar air slice down and early next tuesday those are the windchill, 1 in des moines, 6 below in minot and even dallas, nobody is getting away from this is my point as my eyes tear up already. >> you get inside. everyone is getting hit. we move to that bombshell announcement in the race for the white house. there you see billionaire michael bloomberg, the former mayor of new york, is taking a major step this morning towards launching a bid for the democratic nomination, a move that could scramble the race and linsey davis has the story. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, george. michael bloomberg is reportedly worth an estimated $52 billion. he has built an empire including this building right behind me and now this latest move seems to be an indication that he's not quite sure any of the current democratic candidates can get the job done against president trump. an adviser to bloomberg says mike believes that donald trump represents an unprecedented threat to our nation, adding that mike is increasingly

concerned that the current field of candidates is not well positioned to defeat the president. >> i'm a new yorker. and i know a con when i see one. [ applause ] >> reporter: bloomberg took on trump at the democratic national convention in 2016 and he's getting ready to do it again. >> the bottom line is, trump is a risky, reckless and radical choice and we can't afford to make that choice. >> reporter: this after the 77-year-old shot down the possibility of a run earlier this year when joe biden entered the race. his future rivals reacting swiftly on social media and in interviews. senator elizabeth warren tweeting, welcome to the race, mike bloomberg. and bernie sanders writing, the billionaire class is scared and they should be scared. >> we already have one billionaire in the race and we're seeing the limits of what money can do. >> reporter: bloomberg is reportedly the 14th richest person in the world. he left the democratic party in 2001 to run as a republican for

mayor of new york city, going on to serve three terms. last year the billionaire made it official announcing on instagram that he was reregistering as a democrat saying we need democrats to provide the checks and balance our nation so badly needs. bloomberg previously said he would only get into the race if he thought he had a reasonable shot at winning. george. >> okay, linsey, thanks very much. let's bring in matthew dowd and linsey said it right there, bloomberg in the past said he'd only get in if he thought he had a reasonable shot at winning and he's looking at this field and saying, maybe i have a chance. >> well, i think that's the billion dollar question and this is an unexpected guest at the christmas party of one of the richest people in the world advocated out of climate change and guns, important to the democratic constituency, but i'm still not convinced there is a spot for him in the party because 75% of the voters in the democratic primary say they're satisfied with the field so we'll have to see if he does get in and what kind of reception he's going to get,

especially, george, in places like where i am in new hampshire. >> and who it hurts and who it helps. we know that he passed on a race before when he thought biden was doing well and uncomfortable with a lot of elizabeth warren's positions. the question is will it hurt her or help her if he gets in? >> reporter: well, i think this is the biggest indictment of joe biden. he would not have gotten in or even considered getting in if he thought joe biden was problematic there. i think this helps elizabeth warren. it allows her to pivot against a billionaire which she's been pivoting against wealthy people throughout the race and it begins to even more divide the center part of the field. i also think it hurts pete buttigieg, the mayor of south bend, indiana, who has consolidated some of the central support. who knows what it could do. it could help elizabeth warren but it will certainly, certainly disrupt this field. >> yeah, the question is if he does get in, can he actually get the nomination? can a billionaire in this environment get the democratic nomination? >> i think that's incredibly

problematic. i mean, in the way the field has rolled out, the way that issues are in the democratic primary today, and keep this in mind, george, he looks like he's going to self-finance so he may never even get in a debate. >> matt dowd, thanks very much. cecilia? all this as the impeachment battle is heating up. democrats issuing a subpoena for the president's chief of staff, mick mulvaney, calling on him to testify today and breaking right now ivanka trump speaking out talking impeachment and the whistle-blower. terry moran is there on capitol hill with more on all this. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. as you know, ivanka trump is sometimes seen as a moderating influence on her father. but don't let that polished demeanor fool you. she is a fierce defender of this president and in this interview with the associated press she dismisses, she just brushes off this impeachment inquiry as the latest of many partisan attacks. this morning, the first daughter is defending her father against the accusations at the heart of

the impeachment inquiry calling it the latest threat against his presidency. >> basically since the election this has been the experience that our administration and our family has been having. the interest in overturning the results of the 2016 election and removing him from office. >> reporter: ivanka trump sitting down for an interview with the associated press while on a white house sponsored trip to morocco and talking about the whistle-blower. >> at the end of the day i don't view the whistle-blower as it's -- it shouldn't be a substantive part of the conversation because this is a third party who was not privy to the call and did not have firsthand information. >> reporter: all this comes as we're learning more about the case the democrats are building against the president. house democrats released transcripts of the closed door testimony of another key witness, george kent, a career diplomat whose portfolio includes ukraine said in his

testimony that the president wanted nothing less than for the ukrainian president to go to the microphones and say investigations, biden and clinton. next week kent will return to capitol hill and join william taylor, a top diplomat in ukraine, in the first of the televised impeachment hearings set to begin wednesday. >> we are very much looking forward to these witnesses next week raising their right hand, going under oath and telling the american people about this shakedown scheme. >> reporter: so ivanka trump in the interview repeated what's become the white house line of defense, read the transcript she said of that phone call between president trump and the president of ukraine but democrats say these witnesses are revealing that the phone call is the tip of an iceberg of pressure and maneuvering to get ukraine to go after donald trump's political rivals. cecilia. >> and a number of witnesses in sync on that. okay, terry, thank you. n as p a settlement offer his former charitable foundation. this comes after a civil lawsuih of his children used that foundation for personal business

and campaign interests including spending $30,000 on two portraits of the president himself. a spokesman for the trump foundation says it was pleased to donate that money to worthy organizations. we move to that new book about the trump white house from an insider named anonymous. the senior official who wrote an essay in "the new york times" last year warning about the president has expanded night a book urging voters to replace trump. our chief white house correspondent jon karl has the details. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. we still have no idea who anonymous is. the author is described only as a senior trump administration official, but we don't know if it is a current official or a former official. the book written by anonymous describes a staff in revolt against the president they serve. the book entitled "a warning" is not out for another 11 days but "the washington post" obtained an early copy and claimed senior officials were so alarmed by the

president's behavior last year they considered a midnight self-massacre, a mass resignation in protest but decided against it because they believed it would cause even more chaos. anonymous paints a picture of an out-of-control president, like a 12-year-old in an air traffic control tower, pushing the buttons of government indiscriminately indifferent to the planes skidding across the runway and the flights frantically diverting away from the airport. the unnamed author also accuses the president of routinely making crass comments about women and their appearance and using racist language to describe migrants crossing the southern border. we get these women coming in with like seven children, trump said according to the book. they are saying, oh, please help, my husband left me. they are useless, they don't do anything for our country. at least if they came in with a husband, we could put him in the feels to pick corn or something. the book follows "the new york times" op-ed written by anonymous more than a year ago that described a quiet resistance inside the trump administration.

now the mysterious author says, i was wrong. unelected bureaucrats and cabinet appointees were never going to steer donald trump the right direction in the long run or refine his malignant management style. he is who he is. the white house response comes in the form of a statement from stephanie grisham who writes, quote, the coward who wrote this book didn't put their name on it because it is nothing but lies. >> jon, are they speculating behind the scenes who it might be? >> reporter: they've been doing that for over a year. i don't know if they're any close story figuring it out. >> thanks very much. now to breaking news. an arrest has been made in the disappearance of alabama teen aniah blanchard. steve osunsami has the very latest. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. there is still no sign of this missing college student who investigators here in alabama have been searching for for weeks, but police have made an arrest. they've arrested a man who they say is a suspect in her

disappearance. blanchard was last seen on surveillance video at a convenience store and her suv later found about 50 miles away from her home. in it police say they found evidence she was harmed. around 2:00 a.m. this morning, authorities in florida arrested 29-year-old ibraheem yazeed about three miles from the alabama/florida line. he was taken to a hospital complaining of chest pains. he too is seen in some of the surveillance video and was already out on bond accused of attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery from an incident in february. u.s. marshals say a tip led to his capture. cecilia. >> okay, steve, thank you so much. we turn to breaking news overnight. a deadly accident at a buffalo wild wings in massachusetts. an employee killed and ten others sickened from a cleaning chemical, and gio benitez has the latest. >> reporter: a cleaning agent turned deadly at this buffalo wild wings in burlington, massachusetts. >> several people having breathing issues and eye irritation.

>> reporter: emergency personnel and hazmat teams called to the popular restaurant in the middle of the dinner rush. >> this is a confirmed chemical reaction between two cleaning chemicals. >> reporter: it began when one of the workers who was preparing to clean the floor became sick from the fumes. another worker frantically tried to squee gee the cleaning agent out of the restaurant before being taken to the hospital where he passed away. >> the gentleman who passed away was an employee of the buffalo wild wings who attempts to squeegee the product out of the building. >> reporter: authorities evacuating the restaurant but ten others, eight employees and two diners were hospitalized. buffalo wild wings issued a statement saying we are shocked and saddened to learn of this horrific accident at our franchise-owned sports bar and are closely working with our franchisee and the authorities while they conduct an

investigation. and everyone else is expected to make a full recovery but this comes on the heels of a very troubling incident at another buffalo wild wings near chicago this week. black customers there said that an employee asked them to move because a customer didn't want to sit near them. the company firing that employee and banning those customers for life but now we have another investigation in massachusetts. >> okay, gio, thanks very much. >> thank you, gio. now to the backlash this morning over john legend and kelly clarkson's brand new version of the christmas classic "baby, it's cold outside" that dropped at midnight. some say it may be too politically correct and t.j. holmes is here with more. >> youas classic. in recent years it's actually been referred to as a date rape anthem because of the lyrics that talk about a man trying to get a woman to stay at his apartment after she repeatedly says no. we now have an updated 2019 version, but you know what, people got a problem with these lyrics too. ♪ i really can't stay ♪ baby it's cold outside

also this morning, what could be a big shake-up in the race for president. former new york city mayor michael bloomberg signaling he may run. the billionaire expected to file paperwork today in alabama for the primary there. a crazy scene in the waters off the florida keys. thankfully i want to say everyone did survive. two boats neck and neck in a race, flipping over at the same time. wow. fortunately four crew members aboard suffered only minor injuries. >> they are lucky. we're going to get to the latest on the deadly ambush of an american family in mexico. some laid to rest on thursday. tom llamas is in hermosillo, mexico, with more. >> reporter: george, good morning. we were at one of those funeral services and it was an incredibly emotional scene. family members thanking those who went out to see what happened and save some of the

children that had survived the attack. they're convinced the murders are hired hit men by the drug cartels. this morning, a chilling look into the moments several relatives learned their loved ones in mexico were not only in danger, but being killed. >> they ambushed the vehicle. >> reporter: the audio messages come from a text thread on whatsapp provided by a family member to abc news. relatives sharing information of the attack, the family says by a drug cartel that killed three mothers and six children. >> dear god, everybody pray on, they just came and said my mom's suburban is blown up. >> reporter: news that some survived including this baby named faith. this video shot just after she was found in a car seat with a bullet hole. >> christina's baby is alive. praise god. we got faith. she is alive. >> reporter: the messages detail how the family learned some kids were wounded and stranded after being shot. >> there's five kids sitting on the side of the road. we have the oldest boy of dawna's with us.

he's going to go show us where they are. >> reporter: that boy, 13-year-old devin langford, he and his 9-year-old sister mackenzie set out to find help. >> he ran all the way home and says the rest of the kids that are still alive are up under a tree. he came running home for help but he says they're just there by themselves. >> reporter: hundreds lined up to mourn the devastating loss. devin, there in the maroon shirt once again lending a hand helping his relatives one last time. and survivor kylie shot in the foot rescued with baby brother dixon walking in crutches as the family gathered to say their final good-byes. now, at the funeral service one of the sons of dawna langford eulogized her. he said when he first heard the news, he prayed to

h her. but seven other miracles happened alluding to his brothers and sisters who survived this brutal attack. >> thank you. we will go to that plane crash in southern california. the aircraft slamming into a home, killing the pilot and sparking an inferno. amazingly a father and his toddler were able to escape. matt gutman has the latest from san bernardino. we are hearing from that father this morning. >> reporter: it's an incredible story, cecilia. good morning. check out that side of the house. that's where the master bedroom was and that's where matt and his toddler son were about to take a nap. they were in the kitchen at the time of the impact. the explosion throwing them both to the floor with shattered windows everywhere and the house on fire. he scooped up his toddler and sprinted out the door. that pillar rising from a california home seconds after a plane slammed into it. matt and his toddler son emmett both inside. >> i could see him scared out of his mind crying as soon as the plane hit and just grabbed him

in my arms, ran out the back, telling him it's okay. >> reporter: the plane seemed to plummet from the sky in the town of upland. >> report of an aircraft into a house. >> reporter: just a mile from the airport where the faa says the cirrus sr-22 was supposed to land. authorities say the pilot died on impact. emergency crews rushing to the scene but the plane incinerated almost instantly. >> it went up. somebody heard the boom. it was still ignited. >> reporter: the impact so powerful it nearly knocked tonello off his feet. >> it was almost like a bomb went off because to feel the entire house shake and hearing the pops of the flames. >> reporter: the plane was equipped with a parachute system which can be seen here in the burning wreckage designed to save the plane and passengers in case oso the faa is investigating whether the pilot deployed the chute or if it came out on impact.

now, the faa and ntsb say they're going to investigate but the plane was so completely incinerated in the crash that it could take them up to a year to complete that investigation. now, tonello and his toddler came out of that completely unscathed. that house, though, is probably going to have to be demolished. >> incredible, indeed. thank you so much. now to an abc news exclusive and that story that made national headlines about the so-called long island lolita, a love triangle that almost turned deadly. 17-year-old amy fisher shooting mary jo buttafuoco, but now mary jo and her daughter jessie are opening up like never before. paula faris is here with that story. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this is a very candid glimpse of what happened on that fateful day in may of 1992. you probably have seen or heard this infamous story but never quite like this through the eyes of their daughter. >> tonight the mysterious shooting in the suburbs.

a woman shot in the head in front of her house, no suspect, no motive so far. >> reporter: it was the attempted murder that shook the suburbs. >> why? why this neighborhood? why this house? why would someone, anyone, want to kill mary jo buttafuoco? >> reporter: mother of two, mary jo buttafuoco, shot in the head in broad daylight in may of 1992. the 37-year-old miraculously surviving and helping police identify the perpetrator as 17-year-old amy fisher. >> i was in the hospital and i don't know how it happened or when it happened but somehow a picture of her was brought to me. they said, that's her. that kid did it, and joe said she's a customer. i know her father. i've done work on her car. >> reporter: but amy fisher wasn't just a customer at her husband joey's auto body shop. >> with amy coming in all of the time, that relationship went where it went and it was over real fast but with bad results. my relationship with amy was inappropriate and that's as far as i'm going to go with that. >> reporter: more than 25 years

since the shooting, the buttafuocos are opening up like never before sharing never before seen home deos and reflecting on the day that changed the course of the rest of their lives. >> so crazy to think someone attacked you and tried to murder you right here. >> yeah, right. >> reporter: for their daughter jessie the shooting marked the end of her storybook childhood and beginning of a nightmare. >> after the shooting there was zero degree of normalcy. that's all i wanted. all i wanted was to be normal but it was a rough, rough time and so i got big into cocaine because it made me feel like the queen and i experienced eating disorders from it. i suffered from alcoholism. >> reporter: almost a year after fisher pled guilty to aggravated assault, joey buttafuoco also found himself behind bars, pleading guilty to statutory rape. >> it was pretty surreal.

what sticks out the most now is -- and it makes me kind of sad, i grew a lot of picture, i colored a lot of color books so he could post them on his wall and that's just messed up. that's a messed up exchange between a father and daughter to have to do. >> reporter: abc news also uncovering new details about the case from someone who says amy recruited him. >> amy wanted me to shoot mary jo. eventually she asked me to shoot her, i said yeah. >> reporter: steven sleeman who got immunity admitted to abc news that he fired into mary jo's house six months before fisher pulled the trigger. >> it was a wednesday morning. i happened to be in my car and no one was in the house. i had lined up my sights and put two shots through the window. >> we thought it was random kids in the neighborhood up to mischief. >> we had the police here. the bullet went through my front window and into the wall, into the living room.
