and we certainly say good morning, america. thank you for joining us on this veterans day as we honor all those who served our country. >> there you see the vietnam veterans memorial in washington, d.c. a special service will take place there as always this afternoon. >> and here in new york, the president is expected to march in the veterans day parade. but first, we're going to begin with that record cold that is moving in for millions of americans from the midwest to the south and northeast, some bracing for up to a foot of snow and alex perez starts us off in chicago where the snow is already falling. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. the calendar says fall, but it alreadfeels like we are deep into winter. the rain here has now turned into snow, a nightmare of a morning commute. this morning, the midwest bracing for record lows. in minneapolis, cars veering off the roads as snow and ice

combine for dangerous driving conditions. highways transformed into sheets of ice. in south dakota, freezing rain wreaking havoc on interstate 90 causing spinouts and collisions. this truck flipping right over onto its roof. a winter weather advisory in effect for illinois and indiana where temperatures are expected to drop 12 degrees over the next two days. >> you have to put on extra clothes, you know, because you never know. extra thermals, extra socks. >> reporter: the cold front will continue its march across the country and arrive on the east coast tomorrow, making it feel more like january than november. and some areas in the great lakes and new england are bracing of 6 inches to 10 inches of snow today alone. robin. >> all right, alex, take care. we turn to ginger and you've been telling us it's going to get worse before it gets better.

>> we have at least two days we have to get through this severe cold and a lot of snow in some places. let's go ahead and talk about it. there's snow flying this morning from colorado, a swath really over to michigan. but i want to take you into indiana and illinois because that's just one of the spots that's going to showcase the first round of snow and then the potential for lake effect enhancing it. let's just focus with me on the southern part of the states here right around evansville that's where the front is. you can see northerly winds meeting up with the southerly winds. that also tells you that a lot of the snow flying like rockford, illinois, already reported three inches of snow. that is all north of where the front is. ends up meaning to you, two to six inches in total, if you're traveling interstate 55 or doing 80/94 across indiana you know this is the messy time of year when lake enhanced, new buffalo, south bend and just real quick example of how deep this cold is going to get. check it out here. it goes all the way down south to, say, houston.

i'll show you the numbers in just a bit. let's go back to george. >> thanks, ginger. we're going to go to the white house now and new revelations from former u.n. ambassador nikki haley. she writes in a new book former secretary of state rex tillerson and former chief of staff john kelly tried to enlist her to resist president trump in order to, quote, save the country, an offer she refused. terry moran has the details. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. you know, nikki haley is one of those rare high officials in the trump administration who left on good terms with the president even though she occasionally would criticize him, on charlottesville, on abandoning the kurds in syria, on his occasionally harsh rhetoric and she was always loyal and now revealing how that was tested by some of the people closest to the president. in her memoir out this week, nikki haley takes on former secretary of state rex tillerson and former white house chief of staff john kelly claiming the two men undermined and ignored president trump from inside the white house. according to excerpts released by "the washington post" haley writes, kelly and tillerson

confided in me that when they resisted the president, they weren't being insubordinate. they were trying to save the country. it was their decisions, not the president's that were in the best interest of america, they said. the president didn't know what he was doing, she said of the men's views. according to "the post," haley recounts that tillerson told her people would die if trump was unchecked but she refused to join their effort. >> they should have been saying that to the president, not asking me to join them on their sidebar plan. it should have been, go tell the president what their differences are, and quit if you don't like what he's doing, but to undermine a president is really a very dangerous thing, and it goes against the constitution. and it goes against what the american people want. it was offensive. >> reporter: as for president trump, he was effusive when haley left office last fall. >> she is a fantastic person, very importantly, but she also is somebody that gets it. >> reporter: and the president is now tweeting, good luck,

nikki, on her book's release. well, in a statement to "the washington post" former chief of staff john kelly said that if providing president trump with the best and most open legal and ethical staffing advice so he could make an informed decision is working against trump, then guilty as charged. nikki haley here really one of the most fascinating figures in the republican party. she clearly has future political ambitions maybe running for president, staying on good terms with donald trump is a good idea in this republican party. george? >> there's been a lot of speculation about that. okay, terry, thanks very much. we're going to go now to capitol hill now where the first public hearings on impeachment set for wednesday starting with william taylor, the top u.s. diplomat in ukraine and george kent, the deputy assistant secretary of state followed by the fired u.s. ambassador to ukraine, marie yovanovitch on friday all expected to detail an improper pressure campaign by president trump as republicans release a list of witnesses they want to call. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce tracking it all on capitol hill. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, as this impeachment

inquiry enters the next phase this is now all about making a public case. democrats with these hearings are looking to focus squarely on the president's actions to pressure ukraine while republicans are now looking to broaden the scope of these hearings. as capitol hill braces for public impeachment hearings this morning, fresh fights over who should testify. >> well, i never even heard of some of these people. i don't know who they are. >> reporter:n wednesday, that first witness to come before cameras, the top u.s. diplomat in ukraine, bill taylor. in explosive closed-door testimony, taylor implicated the president in a campaign to pressure ukraine saying it was his, quote, clear understanding that ukraine would not receive nearly $400 million in critical military aid until they agreed rivals.stigate trump's political >> this is a very strong case of bribery. the constitution's very clear. treason, bribery or acts of

omission, and in this case, it is clearly one of those. >> reporter: shifting tactics, some republicans are now condemning trump's behavior but say it doesn't rise to the level of impeachment. >> i believe it was inappropriate. i do not believe it was impeachable. >> reporter: but trump is not on board with that defense tweeting, republicans don't be led into the fool's trap of saying it was not perfect but is not impeachable. insisting nothing was done wrong and over the weekend, republicans put out their own witness wish list including joe biden's son hunter, and the anonymous whistle-blower who sparked this inquiry. >> it's impossible to bring this case forward in my view fairly without us knowing who the whistle-blower is and having a chance to cross-examine them about any vices that they may have. >> reporter: but democrats say that's not going to happen. the chairman leading the hearings, adam schiff, says it would be redundant and would only place their personal safety at grave risk. eager to focus on trump,

democrats are not likely to call hunter biden either. schiff warning the hearings will not serve as vehicles for any member to carry out the shame sham investigation into the bidens. house investigators are still hoping to hear from two witnesses with firsthand knowledge, former national security adviser john bolton and acting white house chief of stave mick mulvaney. now the white house is trying to block them from appearing. bolton seems willing to talk but is looking for the courts to decide whether he can comply and, george, in a surprise twist, mick mulvaney is now also looking to the courts to decide his next move here. >> yeah, the question is how long that would take. meantime, mary, that ukrainian-american who was working with rudy giuliani indicted for some campaign finance violations now appears eager to testify against giuliani and president trump. >> reporter: yeah, george, lev parnas is now willing to speak with congressional investigators and comply with a subpoena and this morning, "the new york times" is previewing why he would be such a critical witness. his lawyer telling "the times"

that parnas plans to tell house investigators he personally told ukrainian officials that they needed to launch an investigation into the bidens or else they would not receive millions in that critical military aid, george. that is exactly the kind of ultimatum that the white house and the president have been denying. >> okay, mary, thanks very much. i know you'll be joining our live coverage of the first impeachment hearings that starts at 10:00 eastern right here on abc and abc news live. robin? >> folks will be watching. now overseas to chaos erupting in hong kong. protests escalating to dangerous levels. senior foreign correspondent ian pannell tracking the very latest. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that's right. really disturbing scenes and multiple the flash points in hong kong. today's clashes came after the mysterious death of a protester late friday and has made an already tense situation there even worse. this morning, the protests in hong kong taking a new violent turn as police open fire on unarmed demonstrators who have been fighting for months for political reform, autonomy from

china and police accountability. >> we will have spent no effort in finding ways and means that could end the violence in hong kong. >> reporter: this officer wrestling with a man dressed in white, while another protester in a black shirt can be seen rushing towards them. the officer then turns and fires his weapon. hitting at least one demonstrator who was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. today's protests was dubbed "operation dorm," targeting highways with blockades and vandalizing subway stations, in a sign of how violent this has become an argument with a passerby ends with him being doused with gasoline and set on fire. police again firing off tear gas in the heart of hong kong's business district, sending panicked residents running to shelter indoors. students are at the heart of this protest, and today at the hong kong polytechnic, barricades are tossed in the air while others douse them in gasoline attempting to start a fire in a standoff with police

that shows no sign of ending. i have to say these are dangerous escalations now with both sides using more and more violence. you can bet the chinese leadership is watching this closely and, remember, beijing has already threatened that if the hong kong authorities can't control the situation there, then they will. amy. >> volatile indeed. ian pannell, thank you. turning now to apple under fire this morning for its new credit card accused of being sexist against women, giving them much lower credit lines than men. rebecca jarvis is here, and rebecca, regulators are already launching an investigation. >> reporter: that's right, amy. yeah, this is raising many eyebrows as some very high-profile individuals are calling out apple for what they say could be sexist policies with their new credit card. this morning, apple backlash. >> a credit card created by apple. >> reporter: the tech giant under investigation over allegations of gender discrimination. new york state regulators responding to complaints that apple's popular new credit card,

which uses an algorithm to assign credit limits, is favoring men over women. including one of apple's founding fathers, co-founder steve wozniak tweeting that compared to his wife i got ten times the credit limit. we have no separate bank or credit card accounts. the same thing allegedly happening to software developer david heinemeier hansson. he says he got 20 times more credit than his wife who he says actually has a higher credit score than he does. >> husband and wife applied for the apple card and husband ended up receiving ludicrously larger credit limits. >> reporter: the tech giant launched the card this summer touting it as created by apple, not a bank, and promising transparency. but now critics say the algorithm used by apple's partner, goldman sachs, is anything but transparent. >> we simply were told this is ju how it is and you just have to accept that. >> reporter: goldman sachs responding in a statement

writing, as with any other individual credit card, your application is evaluated independently. we look at an individual's income and an individual's credit worthiness. adding, we have not and will not make decisions based on factors like gender. and the point here is also that if there is sexism, it can intentionally or unintentionally be a part of these algorithms. keep in mind algorithms aren't just determining credit limits in this case, they are determining credit limits in all cases helping employers sift through job applications and determining what you see online so think about this, amy. they are very, very powerful and we don't really at this point understand them. it's important to really understand what they do and how much they're driving society right now. >> transparency key in this. >> yes. >> all right, rebecca, thank you. we're going to get the latest now on a possible breakthrough in the vaping crisis. the cdc has now identified a

toxin that may have caused the deaths of 39 people and illnesses tied to e-cigarettes across the country. linsey davis is here with details. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, george. for several months now we've been reporting on this mysterious illness in people who smoke e-cigarettes. well, now u.s. health officials are describing the findings as a breakthrough suggesting vitamin e acetate may be the culprit. a possible breakthrough this morning involving the investigation into the outbreak vaping-related lung injuries and deaths. over the weekend, cdc officials said that vitamin e acetate is a potential toxin of concern calling it a strong culprit. the chemical compound was found in 29 biologic samples from patients with lung injuries associated with the use of thc and vaping products, including 15-year-old zane martin. >> it's very bad. don't vape unless you want to end up in the hospital. >> reporter: although it's commonly used in lotions and supplements, officials say that inhaling the the oil-like substance can be dangerous.

>> it's important to understand that inhalation should be inhalation of air and not substances. especially oils, because oils produce inflammation, pneumonia and over time with repeated use cause respiratory failure and death. >> reporter: scott becker, the executive director of the association of public health laboratories says, this investigation has been very challenging because there are so many different constituents and things that are in this product. it's been like looking for a needle in a haystack. i think with the latest announcements from the cdc, we're getting much closer. the cdc says that the priority now is animal at this timing to learn definitively if vitamin e acetate causing lung damage when inhaled. >> thank you, linsey. all right, this morning, we're going to talk about the dallas cowboys with a new addition to the team. take a look at this. remember the black cat that appeared during the monday night football game. at that point they were losing to the giants but when the cat took the field the team turned it around. the team decided to make it

government called this an atrocity, but now we're learning new details more terrifying as we learn that little boy thought the killers were actually following him, yet he soldiered on to rescue his family. for the first time the hero boy who helped rescue his siblings in that deadly ambush attack in mexico sharing his story. 13-year-old devin langford and his father, david, sitting down with abc news for an exclusive interview. >> they just started hitting the car at first like with a bunch of bullets, just started shooting rapidly at us. >> reporter: devin walking 14 miles for several hours to get help not sure if the cartel hit men were coming for him next telling us about his painful thoughts along the way. >> if there was anybody else out there trying to shoot me or following me or about to -- about my mom and my two brothers. >> reporter: devin detailing the moments that led up to the shooting, the gunmen first attacking relative christina

langford-johnson's car in front of her killing her and then firing on devin's family car when they drove up. >> it felt real scary and felt like a lot of bullets. >> reporter: devin thinks one of those bullets hit the engine. his mom unable to move the car. >> the car didn't work, so the -- she was just trying right there starting the car as much as she could, but i'm pretty sure they shot something so the car wouldn't start. >> reporter: devin telling us the last thing she said. >> to get down right now. she was trying to pray to the lord, and she was trying to start the car up to get out of there. >> reporter: his mother dawna and two little brothers, trevor and rogen, would not survive the attack. devin says the murderers had long guns and were wearing what looked like bulletproof vests. the family thought they were killers for the drug cartel. >> afterwards they got us out of the car and they just got us on the floor and then drove off. >> reporter: the children tried to flee but as you see from this video later inside of a hospital

most were too wounded including sister kylie shot in the foot and baby brother brixon with a bullet wound to the chest. >> we walked a little while so we couldn't carry him anymore. we put him behind a bush and i wasn't hit or nothing. so i started walking because every one of them were bleeding really bad so i was trying to get in a rush to get there. >> reporter: devin eventually getting help. >> to be honest with you my boy is a hero simply because he gave his life for his brothers and sisters. >> reporter: now the langfords part of a fundamentalist mormon group that lived in the area decades before the drug cartels took over have left mexico. it's too dangerous. too violent, 100 other family members following them in this caravan over the weekend. >> not only have i lost a wife and two children, but i am having to move the rest of my family with really no place to go at this point. >> reporter: david langford had this message for the families in america who have been praying

for them. >> my message is to hold on to your family because there's nothing like family. >> reporter: and devin wanting the world to remember his mother's legacy. >> she was a nice person and a brave woman that tried to save her kids. >> now, that family tells me their faith is renewed because of all the children that survived when they came so close to death and the father wants everyone to know his 9-year-old daughter is also a hero, mackenzie. like her brother she walked for hours trying to find help, guys. >> both of them. >> it's amazing to do that and tell their story in such a compelling way. >> when they talk about the little girl, mackenzie. she got lost. they found two little footsteps a couple miles down and a shoe. she was walking and her blisters were bleeding and when they first grabbed her she said my brothers need help. >> it could not have been easy for you to be there. >> it was not and to see what these people did to family,

news on twitter writing, our taping on thursday was canceled because host pat sajak underwent successful emergency surgery to correct a blocked intestine. he is resting comfortably and looking forward to getting back to work. while the 73-year-old is recuperating his co-host for nearly four decades, vanna white stepping in for him on friday after the show's taping was canceled the previous day. "wheel of fortune," the longest running syndicated game show ever, celebrating its 7,000th episode in may. >> people look at us as part of their lives. it's a nice position to be in when you're a little old television show. >> reporter: viewers have been watching the dynamic duo working side by side now for 37 years. white's been turning tiles and lighting up letters ever since. and this isn't the first time the 62-year-old has filled in as host. years ago the co-host switching jobs mid-episode when sajak suffered a bout of laryngitis. >> all right, we'll switch. i want to give my voice a host. you sort of have the idea? >> i think so.

let's go to robin. all right, george. now to the search for answers after a 13-year-old broadway actress's deadly asthma attack. dr. jen ashton is going to join us in a moment, but first, kaylee hartung has laurel griggs' story. >> reporter: laurel griggs was a rising star. >> i'll teach you the proper poise when you talk to boys. >> reporter: appearing in big broadway productions like the tony award-winning "once." >> okay, who is up next? >> reporter: and making audiences laugh on "snl." >> we both know coal is a dying industry. >> okay, thank up very much. merry christmas. >> reporter: the 13-year-old passing away after suffering a massive asthma attack. her grandfather sharing on facebook, the world lost a real princess who only wanted to make the future happy for all. acting was just a childhood dream come true and she had big plans for the future. and dr. jen ashton joins us here and our heart goes out to laurel's family. you don't normally think of an asthma attack leading to something like this. >> no, and we have to understand

and remember asthma is a common lung condition, but it can be potentially very serious, in some cases fatal. it's characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the passageways in our lung that then can cause when someone is having an asthma attack, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, a cough and can in some cases lower the oxygen levels in our blood which is a medical emergency. >> can you explain how this happens? >> well, you know, we used to call it status asthmatic, that was the cause of death in this tragic case, but basically that's now called a severe asthma exacerbation and that can happen when traditional treatments are not effective. this can last for hours and in some cases again it could be fatal once someone's oxygen levels drop below a certain point then you get cardiac and brain involvement and unfortunately can be fatal and we do have to remember still it's rare. less than 200 teens and children die in this country every year but 6 million have asthma and even one is too many. >> absolutely. even one.

so how do you know if you should go seek medical attention? >> that's really the key. you have heard me say it before. we don't expect parents to make medical decisions other than to trust their gut and their instinct. there are signs to look out for, number one, if your child is in the middle of an asthma attack and need to stop talking mid-sentence to catch their breath, that can be a sign. if they use their abdominal muscles to breathe, that's called retraction, and widening their nostrils is called nasal flaring and regardless of skin color if you see a dusky or bluish tint to the lips or nail beds that is an emergency. you need to get to an emergency room. >> all things we should keep in mind. i know you wanted to say something for veterans day. >> a shoutout to all our men and women in uniform but also my dad, u.s. air force, i was born on an air force base. i am super proud of him today and every day. this, and what can we do to be better? >> reporter: her photo featured in the november issue of national geographic. celebrating today's woman in an ongoing project that includes this month's issue and the book "women: the national geographic image collection." these photos demonstrating just how far women have come marking their place in history. >> this is a historical document. it's all by women and it's about women and so it would be such a great opportunity if you look back in 50 years and say, you know, where were we at with women in the military? >> reporter: national geographic veteran photographer lindsay addario whose career spans decades documenting combat zones. >> you tend to photograph it seems like conflict, human rights, but women. why is that? >> i think that when i see other women in those arenas, i really tend to focus on them because i was always often one of very few women. >> reporter: capturing this young recruit's mental and physical toughness, framing her

[ applause ] >> what was it about him? such a comedian's comedian. >> he was just a very soulful person. he was really neurotic but was trying so hard to drop it so like "the larry sanders show" is about a guy who has a giant ego and i think garry hate tlad part so created a show about people would were obsessed with fame. >> there is a quote in the book
