how are you? >> ihe jmy:ou i wl tell you somethg. thoughpas, w are fantastic, by the way. >> thank you. >> jimmy: they remind me -- >> uh-oh. >> jimmy: -- a little bit of the set of the jeffersons. >> they do have a good '70s magic to them. >> jimmy: they do. for those who don't know, we did -- kerry was a part of "the jeffersons" revival. >> live in front of a studio audience. >> jimmy: live earlier this year. [ cheers and applause ] and one of the things -- i don't think i've talked about this at all, but i had a black-and-white television when i was a kid. i didn't have a color tv. and when i showed up and saw the set they'd built i was like -- >> too much. >> jimmy: no, i was like oh, yeah, wow, there are colors. this is unbelievable. there you are with will ferrell as tom and helen willis. >> we had so much fun. >> jimmy: you know, it's funny. do you know how this like kind of with tom and helen willis -- will, who's one of the
1:06 am
producers, and he said to me right off the bat, he said it would be great if kerry washington was helen willis. >> seriously? >> jimmy: it would be great. and said he knewbut i must hav with my pajammies. >> jimmy: we knew each other and i asked if you would do it. you immediately said yes. >> i thought it was your idea, jerk. [ laughter ] it's great to have friends. >> jimmy: it was really the first conversation. so i contacted you. >> yes. >> jimmy: and then i forgot to tell will that. so weeks went by. >> and he was like, who's my helen? >> jimmy: he was like who's helen? and i said oh, kerry's helen. and he said oh, i had no idea. >> thanks for letting me know. and i didn't mention it at drop-off. >> jimmy: i thought you guys would have talked about it at drop-off. >> i'm always like hi, will. >> jimmy: well, it's great. and we are doing together, we are producing -- >> i'm very excited to be joining the producing team. >> jimmy: on december 18 we're going to do a holiday episode of "all in the flooeamily" and "go
1:07 am
times." >> so exciting. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: that's like for me -- that is one of the shows of my childhood, "good times." >> you know what's amazing too, is how for better or for worse, how relevant these shows still are. >> jimmy: yes. >> still so funny, still so meaningful. >> jimmy: remarkably meaningful and remarkably relevant for these -- we don't want to reveal which episodes we're going to show. but they really are unbelievable. >> it's really amazing. >> jimmy: now, "good times," is that a big show for you too? >> yeah. we didn't watch a lot of tv in my house growing up. >> jimmy: oh, my gosh. i'm so sorry. >> i know. [ laughter ] neglect. neglect. but i used to sneak at a neighbor's house, and we watched all the shows in syndication. all the norman lear shows. >> jimmy: yeah, right. yeah. "good times" is a good one. great theme song. the whole thing. >> yes! >> jimmy: we have some good prize surprises. >> i was just going to say we might have some surprises. >> jimmy: we do. in the meantime, since between "scandal" and all the various things that you're producing,
1:08 am
you did a play on broadway. >> i did. also produced that. >> jimmy: you produced that as well. >> yeah. [ cheers and applause ] and we brought it to netflix. >> jimmy: "american son." how do you get involved with something like this in the first place? >> so this really amazing broadway producer who i'd worked with in the past, he called and said it's time for to you come back to broadway. when he heard it was going to be "scandal's" final season. and i said no, thank you, i'd like to take a nap, please. >> jimmy: yes. >> but i really love jeffrey richards. i trusted him. and i read a couple of things he sent me. "american son" was the first thing he sent actually because he said kenny leon was attached. and i fell in love with the material. i was capittivated by this fami and the circumstances they find themselves in. and i wanted to play this character. she's like the un-olivia pope. she's everything i didn't do for seven seasons. i fell in love with this family. >> jimmy: you come off of that -- how many months did you do of -- >> we did four months. and it's the hardest thing i've
1:09 am
ever done. >> jimmy: really? >> yes. theater's really hard but now the play and now film is -- it's a parent's worst nightmare. you drop into this real-time 90 minutes. they're inhe l polpreca black m white dad. they're desraly looking for thr ho just had some of cops but we don't k what. so we spend 90 minutes trying to find my kid, my baby, who's not my baby but my baby. and also you learn about this couple who are recently celebrate bud they're still kind of madly in love. so it's a beautiful, very hard film. >> jimmy: how many times did you do the play? eight times a week? >> yeah. sometimes twice a day. >> jimmy: sow d >> jimmy: so you did it more than 100 times. >> oh, yeah. >> jimmy: so you come into "the jeffersons." and you have all this experience of being on stage live. >> i think that's part of why i had so much fun. like there were people vomiting backstage. >> jimmy: you seemed like --
1:10 am
>> everybody was so freaked out. >> jimmy: you seemed to be the least nervous of everyone. >> i was really excited. there was one person who was also not at all nervous, jamie foxx. >> jimmy: yeah. he's never nervous. >> he's a pro at everything and he's never nervous. which is why it's perfect that he's the one that screwed up. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: maybe he should have been a little nervous. >> maybe a little. it was also great because we were all terrified we were going to screw up. but it made the show so much better -- >> jimmy: who was the most afraid as far as cast members go? >> you know who shocked me? i don't know if he was the most frayed but afraid but i was surprised. woody harrelson. the day before he was like why are we doing this? i was like i don't know. but you and jaimie are the reasn we're all here. if you're nervous we're screwed. >> jimmy: okay. yeah. i think maybe there's a reason he was nervous. >> moving on. >> jimmy: because archie always smoked cigars i think is one of the problems. >> yeah.
1:11 am
>> jimmy: what about when you're doing a play like that and somebody loses their place or screws up? like jamie you mentioned. he made the most of it. >> he was the perfect person to screw up. >> jimmy: in a way it was. >> i think also with these live shows you doubt whether it's real. but when he made that flub everybody was like oh, this is really live. >> jimmy: right. >> and also he's an exceptional comedian. so he made it work. it was the most graceful flub you could ever have. >> jimmy: he's an incredible person. >> yes, he is. >> jimmy: if you're doing a serious play, though, what happens? can you laugh or -- >> no. when the person across from you says the thing that they're not supposed to say until 30 minutes later -- >> jimmy: oh, sometimes that happens. >> you're like, oh. >> jimmy: we're going to wrap this one up quick, everybody. >> it's going to be a 20-minute play tonight. you figure it out. i think that's part of what i love about it. you just have to figure it out. and you kind of take them back to what they're supposed to say and then 30 minutes later you're like remember when you said that
1:12 am
thing? let's go back to that. >> jimmy: if there's someone in the audience like a famous person, someone you know, is that want to know -- like i hate if my friends sit in the first row. and i just say like please don't tell me. but there are certain guests like when the first lady came. you have to know because -- >> jimmy: melania trump came to the -- >> no. [ laughter ] [ applause ] when the first lady came. [ laughter ] when michelle obama came. they shut down the street. so you either -- >> jimmy: you know. >> -- think there's a really bad thing happening or this is the night michelle is coming. >> jimmy: so they didn't tell you in advance michelle obama's coming. >> i didn't want them to tell me. but of course i could tell that mrs. obama was going to be in the house. >> jimmy: could you see her in the audience? >> i couldn't, thank goodness. >> jimmy: so they put her in a good spot. >> they did.
1:13 am
but also they have to rush her out before the curtain call is over, before we're done bowing so people don't like run up for selfies. >> jimmy: right. >> so when i walked off stage she was already in my dressing room. and i was like, ah! did you like it? [ laughter ] >> jimmy: and then she was in your car on the way out. [ laughter ] kerry washington is here. her play on netflix is called "american son." we'll be right back.
