vic, what do they think will make a difference? >> reporter: well, ama, the first thing that meeting wrapped up just a little while ago here. in answer to your question, what do chinatown leaders want? well, first of all, they want more police presence. in fact there's a police car sitting right behind me that's been parked there since we got here. they also want better or more community-based solutions, and they want better cross-cultural relationships. >> a number of increase in foot patrols listening to the community to make more investments in bilingual supported services. >> reporter: mayor london breed listed some of the things she would approve to make chinatown residents more comfortable. this after last weekend's disturbing assault. this cell phone video captured the violent scene. police say it started when one attacker jumped from a black suv and ripped a cell phone from a

victim's hand. his friends intervened only to be attacked by other assailants, the three victims all in their 60s. the four suspects jumped in their car and sped off. >> we know the action has been disturbing. it's been heart breaking to see what's been happening, the targeted violence on our elderly community. >> reporter: li is an organizer of today's gathering. the attacks were also captured on video. a chinatown leader, lying unconscious, just after he was beaten by assailants who stole his gold rolex watch. the second victim being punched as he ran to help his friend. in that case security video also captured the three suspects just moments before the assaults. one of them 19-year-old deshawn

pearson was arrested months later in oakland. chief william scott assured residents police are doing as much as they can. >> the board and the mayor have been gracious on providing us extra overtime funding. we're using that funding to enhance our deployment in this area. >> reporter: pastor norman fong heads the community development center. >> i know some people don't like too many cops around n chinatown right now, we love it and want more. >> reporter: investigators believe the assailants who attacked seniors here this weekend are the same ones who have committed other street robberies and assaults in chinatown. police chief scott says they do have some leads. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> vic, did chief scott go into detail about what he's done or will be doing to make chinatown safer? >> well, dan, you heard the mayor say in that meeting that

they have increased foot patrols here in chinatown since october. police chief scott also confirmed that there are also more bilingual police officers here in chinatown, but the chief really wants people to know this, that police have made a bunch of arrests, specifically eight to ten arrests since july for street robberies and assaults in chinatown. back to you. >> vic, thanks. vic lee reporting for us. a new report says the number of hate crime murders soared to a record high last year while the numbers of hate crimes overall dropped. data released by the fbi shows there were 24 hate crime murders. that includes the 11 worshippers at a pittsburgh, pennsylvania, synagogue. that's the most since records began being kept in 1991. overall, hate crimes dropped slightly in 2018 following three years of increases. agencies reported a total of 7,120 hate crime incidents. over half of those incidents

were motivated by a race, ethnicity ancestry come opponpo. most of those against african-americans. six victims of the gilroy garlic festival filed a lawsuit. the shooting in late july claimed three lives. 6-year-old stephen romero, 13-year-old keyla salazar and 25-year-old trevor irby. >> there's a shooting. >> reporter: three months ago just days after the gilroy garlic festival shooting, we interviewed 13-year-old leslie. today we caught up with her. last time we saw you at home you were still recovering. how are you feeling now? >> good. but it hurts after walking too much. >> reporter: after walking she has to take a break. the bullet wounded her leg and changed her life forever. now she's part of a lawsuit who

say organizers failed to prevent the suffering. >> all of us are suffering from ptsd, survivor's guilt. every week at the hospital, we're going to the doctor's office. every one of us in the family going to therapy. i mean just walking to my car is a chore. >> reporter: their lawsuit seeks unspecified damages above $25,000 against the gilroy garlic festival association. various security companies and other unnamed defendants, alleging negligent security measures allowed the gunman to break into the festival through a fence. >> they want to make sure that promoters of public events, like the gilroy garlic festival, take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of the attendees of the event. they did not do that here. they failed miserably. >> reporter: the gilroy garlic festival association issued a statement that says in part, the lawsuit filed today stemming from a horrific act of domestic

terrorism is not unexpected, and we will respond through the appropriate legal channels. these victims are planning to file a claim against the city of gilroy that could lead to a lawsuit. luz pena, abc 7 news. >> and to look back on the details of the garlic festival shooting and the lives that were lost, go to abc7news.com. there are still no arrests tonight in a tragic murder this weekend that left a pregnant mother dead in oakland. her husband was also wounded, as they checked on their car alarm which was going off. leslie brinkley has the story. >> reporter: outside this apartment building on 65th avenue and outlook, a young couple heard their car alarm going off at 8:00 p.m. saturday. they went to check on it and left their 8-year-old and 11-year-old sons in their apartment. there was gunfire, many shots fired. misty smith walton died. she was six months pregnant with a baby girl. her husband survived and was hospitalized. someone who knows him told abc 7 news he described feeling the

bullets go past him and hitting him. >> she was a free spirit, outgoing, young, loving mother who loved her children dearly. >> reporter: ms. misty as she was known was the pta president at carl b.munck elementary school. >> one of they are children is a student here. this is a situation that you never wanting to see anywhere. anywhere. and it's just -- it's outrageous that anybody would do this. >> reporter: counselors were at the school today to help. >> it just doesn't make sense how something so senseless and tragic, how those two things intersect. >> reporter: neighbors were also shocked. >> this is a safe area. we've never had any type of shootings right in this area here. >> reporter: i spoke to a woman who did not want to be identified. she said one time her car was broken into, but otherwise she felt perfectly safe here.

now that's forever changed. she's looking to move. in oakland, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. new at 6:00, a horseback rider had to be rescued at mt. diablo after a horse threw him. the contra costa county sheriff's office released this video taken late last month. a helicopter had to hoist the man to safety. he had a leg injury and wasn't able to walk and an ambulance couldn't get to him. the horse was fine and the rider is recovering. there's still no verdict in the hillsborough heiress murder trial. green was the father of li's two children. his body was found in may of 2016, two weeks after reported missing. prosecutors say li lured green to her mansion where he was shot and killed. they have argued li's bodyguard killed green during a botched kidnapping. thousands of university of california workers are set to go

on strike tomorrow. the union that represents 25,000 uc workers statewide says the one-day strike is in response to efforts to outsource jobs. those positions include service and patient care technical workers. strikes are scheduled at all ten uc campuses and five medical centers. a uc spokesman says the university's agreement with the union already protects employees from displacement, and uc will do everything possible to limit the negative impact of the strike. airbnb is responding to a claim regarding a bay area party at a vallejo rental property on halloween, the same night five people were shot and killed at a party in orinda. >> reporter: dozens of people in costumes arriving at this vallejo airbnb halloween night, paying to attend a party. never mind the sign that says no loud talking, music or noise after 8:00 p.m. the homeowner says he had no idea the party would be taking

place. >> they were brand new guests to the platform. they were coming from one night and that's all we know. >> reporter: chris young said the booking guest reached out to him the next day to report some small damage, saying that she fell and her heel went through the wall. >> we get down here and there's a hole this big in the wall. >> reporter: here's a picture of the hole. >> and the house smelled like marijuana. we said, okay, there's a little bit more than what is being represented. >> reporter: so young checked the home's ring security cameras. >> the more i watched it, it became evident this was a full-on organized house party. >> reporter: with a stripper pole installed. >> there are scratches on the ceiling, you have a handprint over here. >> reporter: but the most disturbing thing young discovered, party goers talking about the orinda airbnb halloween party and fatal shooting which happened the same night. >> the somebody starts shooting, you need to duck. >> reporter: patting down guests and explaining why.

>> the folks here were aware about what went on down there. >> reporter: in an emailed statement, airbnb tells the i-team, quote, unauthorized parties have no place on airbnb and we have removed the booking guest from our community and are quickly working to support the host through our $1 million host guarantee. airbnb also confirms they already settled another claim with young. two weeks prior to the halloween party, differnt guests stole the washer and drier, television, even the coffee maker, toaster and microwave. young wishes guests were under the same microscope as hosts but he calls both isolated incidents. >> they're doing the best they can right now. all i ask is just keep doing it. >> reporter: in vallejo, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> beginning december 15th, airbnb will expand its manual screening of high-risk reservations to all of north america, helping identify suspicious reservations and help

>> if the weather holds, they'll have a nice time here in the city because it's been gorgeous. >> although we're hoping for some rain at some time, drew. >> it can't come soon enough. it's been several weeks since we've mentioned any form of rain in the forecast. what we're finding over the next couple of days is cooler weather moving in, so temperatures going back to reality. more november-like by thursday especially. live doppler 7 along with satellite is a dry scan from our rooftop camera along the embarcadero. look at that, a beautiful, bright full moon. you can see the glow off the calm bay waters. the full frost moon. the name in november that it gets, typically this is when we see a lot of frost across the united states this time of year but nonetheless it's a quiet night. the forecast will call for high clouds streaming in, some coastal fog as well. the marine layer not as expansive as it has been for much of last week. cooler weather the next two days. even on thursday morning along the coast, we'll have a little

coastal drizzle. we'll show you that in one second. winds mainly calm except close to the coast. a light onshore breeze has picked up. we wish the wind was a little stronger, that would help mix up our atmosphere and get some of the smoke and haze out of our atmosphere, but nonetheless our air quality will remain moderate tomorrow as well. number 65 in santa rosa, 61 in the city, 67 in san jose, 63 in oakland, half moon bay the cool spot coming in at 50 degrees. live doppler 7 along with satellite, high pressure, this has been the main forecast feature for much of the past week. it's sticking next to the coast tomorrow as well. but what we're watching, there's this weak ripple of energy that's going to slowly move towards califoria. what that will do, you'll notice increased cloud cover and that chance of a little coastal drizzle thursday morning. time it all out for you tomorrow morning. there's that fog banked up right along our coast. high clouds streaming in from time to time. we'll call it partly sunny on our wednesday afternoon.

that sun goes down exactly at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. and then thursday morning, there you go, there's that chance early thursday morning we could find some drizzle right along the coastline. unfortunately, no substantial rain coming. mix of stars and clouds out there, numbers falling into the mid-40s in our coolest spots. tomorrow it's a mix of sun and clouds out there. numbers, a few degrees cooler tomorrow than we were today, 67 in oakland, 64 in san francisco, 75 in san jose. a lovely view of the shark tank right now. air quality tomorrow you're looking at p.m., 2.5 levels, that particulate matter. we're always tracking those numbers. once they're above 50 like they will be tomorrow, we're in that moderate category. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. the cooling trend gets under way tomorrow. a lot of cloud cover thursday with coastal drizzle. numbers are cool, we're only stuck in the 60s.

tonight's bay area business watch. juul labs is cutting 150 more jobs. the e-cigarette company slashed 500 positions last month, mostly in marketing. today's move comes in the face of heightened scrutiny surrounding vaping. google is taking another step into the health industry. the mountain view-based company is teaming up with ascention to use artificial intelligence to find patterns that could help doctors. the two companies acknowledged privacy concerns, but say the agreement is compliant with federal law and health data will be kept secure. redwood city-based impossible foods is ready to introduce plant-based bacon. it's enjoyed great success with the impossible burger as a beef alternative. impossible foods says it hopes to transform consumers taste to its plant-based options. while we're talking food, america's largest milk producer is filing for bankruptcy. dean foods of dallas filed for chapter 11 protection today in

>> i cannot change the past, but we will impact the future. >> reporter: with his wife and 102-year-old aunt ida by his side, he was sworn in as the new leader of the vallejo police department. >> that must have been a very proud moment for you. >> very proud, very proud. it's a blessing that she's still here with us. >> reporter: williams comes from san jose pd where he worked nearly three decades. he is vallejo's first african-american police chief. he speaks spanish. his message today, one of unity. a nod to the turmoil facing his new department. >> today is a day of rebirth. today we chart a new direction. >> reporter: williams is taking over at a tumultuous time for vallejo pd. for years they have been plagued with police shootings and accusations of excessive force. just this year, vallejo officers fatally shot 21-year-old rapper willie mccoy at a taco bell drive-through. a month earlier a marine veteran claimed he was assaulted by an officer for filming the encounter. >> what's your message to people

of color who distrust the vallejo police department? >> if you've ever felt marginalized or not, i value you. if you felt you haven't been heard, i hear you. >> reporter: melissa is a civil rights attorney. >> i think there's going to have to be an acknowledgement of this decades-long problem. the community has been terrorized by vallejo pd for decades. >> reporter: we asked the chief if he wants to see change with the department. >> i want to see progress, and i want to see the right progress. that has to be deliberate and intentional, and that's done through community inclusion, department inclusion, and community policing. >> reporter: now, during his swearing-in here at city hall, we also asked the police chief about that officer-involved shooting by a richmond police officer. he said he would not comment because he has not yet been fully briefed. the supreme court today took up the legal fate of undocumented immigrants protected under president obama's daca program. a large group showed up at the

court this morning, while inside trump administration attorneys argued why daca should ending. the immigrants include about 700,000 young people who came here as children. for some, the u.s. is the only country they have ever known. but the supreme court's conservative majority appeared ready to side with the president. >> coming out of the arguments today, it did seem as though the justices were leaning in the direction of allowing the administration to end the daca program. >> president trump says if the supreme court overturns daca a deal will be made with democrats for the immigrants to stay. so far his effort to hammer out a deal has not worked out. today students in the south bay hit the streets to support daca. these young people started their walk right after lunch. many are undocumented students brought to san jose by their parents years ago. the supreme court decision could seal their fate. >> i actually feel very emotional and unsure of -- if anything actually happens, like

what's going to happen to me and my other -- and the other 800,000 people. >> santa clara county estimates 23,000 young people were eligible for the daca program. >> you know, you hear the word daca and dreamers used interchangeably but they are not exactly the same. daca recipients are people protected under president obama's deferred action for childhood arrivals. that's daca. they are undocumented immigrants who arrived before the age of 16 and have lived here since june of 2007. it is not a path to u.s. citizenship. dreamers are those who would have been protected under the dream act, which has not passed congress. under the proposed law dreamers must have entered the u.s. before the age of 18 and have lived here at least four years. in addition, the bill would have granted legal status in exchange for attending college or joining the military. tomorrow the impeachment inquiry into president trump goes public. televised hearings begin with

democrats presenting their strongest witnesses. trevor alt shows you what to expect. >> reporter: the impeachment inquiry into president trump now stepping out from behind closed doors. tomorrow public hearings set to get under way. in the hot seat, bill taylor, the top u.s. diplomat to ukraine who has told lawmakers it was his clear understanding ukraine would not receive military aid from the united states until the country agreed to investigate the bidens. taylor is a west point grad and vietnam veteran, but his testimony and the entire impeachment procedure already being dismissed by the president. >> so what they do is they go all over washington. let's find ten people that hate president trump the most and let's put them up there. >> reporter: with these public hearings, democrats will attempt to make the case to americans that the president committed what the constitution calls high crimes and misdemeanors when he prerkd the ukrainian leader to investigate his political rivals while allegedly withholding aid. >> this is a very simple,

straightforward act. the president broke the law. >> reporter: the republican response has been mixed. some saying the president pushed for the investigation but there was no quid pro quo and the president doesn't deserve to be impeached. others saying the anonymous whistle-blower needs to testify. >> if they don't call the whistle-blower in the house, this thing is dead on arrival in the senate. >> reporter: the ending result largely centered on how the american public reacts to these hearings now moving into the spotlight. >> every impeachment proceeding involved kind of this push and pull between what's happening in congress and public opinion. and so public opinion i think drives what happens in congress. >> reporter: republicans have released their list of witnesses they want to see testify. it includes joe biden's son, hunter, and the unnamed whistle-blower. but witnesses have to be approved by the house intelligence committee and chairman adam schiff has said he is unlikely to call either of those people. >> and special live coverage of the impeachment hearings starts tomorrow morning. you can watch it beginning at 7:00 a.m. right here on abc 7

news. happening today, sonoma county began removing debris from the kincade fire. that includes things like hazardous waste, pesticides, burned batteries and paint. this step in the cleanup is free for property owners. after that hired contrators will come in to finish up. the entire process is expected to take about three weeks. now, this thursday a local beer maker will host a fund-raiser to help people affected by the fire. it starts at 4:00 p.m. and run until 9:00. the event is free. all proceeds will go to a nonprofit organization that helps first responders. there will be an auction, live music and of course beer. how would you like to own -- or how would you like your own swimming pool, hot tub and maybe even a butler? >> some of the amenities included in the new airbnb property. >> talk about one of a kind. there's never been anything like this offered before, and it's going to cost you. >> that's ahead. also, a big day for disney.

oakland bay bridge opened. you're looking at it live from a couple different viewpoints. 83 years ago the original toll was 65 cents. now you'll pay anywhere from $5 to $7 depending on when you are crossing. here's another piece of perspective when it comes to the cost of living in the bay area. a new study by the california association of realtors shows just how much you need to make in order to buy a home here. brace yourself. in san francisco, you need to make at least $309,000 a year to meet the minimum qualifying income to buy the median priced home. it's no surprise, this is the most expensive county in california. in marin county, you need to make a quarter million dollars a year. in santa clara, you need around $243,000 a year. contra costa county is one of the more affordable bay counties. you need $130,000 a year there to buy a home. well, for the first time ever you can renti from a royal on airbnb.

the country is going to get to see the niners at least two more times in primetime. the november 24th game against the packers has been flexed from a day game to sunday night football. the final home game is now on a saturday, december 21st against the rams. seahawks beat the niners 27-24 in o.t. last night and there's a lot to learn from their first loss of the year. >> it was a crazy game, it was.
