we are back with more fires out in the west. crews are battling a brush fire just east of los angeles. flames erupted in hacienda heights yesterday afternoon. the fire grew to more than three acres. officials say no structures are threatened. they've been so busy out there. a former insurance executive has received the longest prison sentence so far stemming from the college admissions bribery scandal. >> toby mcfarland received six months behind bars for paying $450,000 to get his son and daughter into the university of southern california. mcfarland pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy in june. he was also fined $150,000. his case is similar to that of "full house" star lori loughlin. but remember, we just said he pleaded guilty. there's more impeachment drama to report but this case is playing out far from washington. >> university of florida student body president michael murphy is being accused of misusing student fees to pay donald trump jr. to speak on campus.

new bombshell about a previously undisclosed conversation with the president. abc's mary bruce has more. >> reporter: taylor brought with him new information, raising new questions about the president's personal involvement. taylor indicating that trump himself was checking in to see whether ukraine was launching those investigations. taylor explaining he recently learned that just one day after the president's phone call with ukrainian president zelensky, trump followed up with the u.s. ambassador to the eu, gordon sondland, the trump mega donor who had become his point man on ukraine. >> in the presence of my staff at a restaurant, ambassador sondland called president trump and told him of his meetings in kiev. the member of my staff could hear president trump on the phone asking ambassador sondland about the investigations. ambassador sondland told president trump the ukrainians were ready to move forward. following the call with president trump, the member of my staff asked ambassador sondland what president trump thought about ukraine. ambassador sondland responded that president trump cares more about the investigations of

biden. >> reporter: taylor testified sondland was part of an irregular channel of diplomacy led by the president's personal attorney, rudy giuliani. republicans pressing him. >> in fairness, this irregular channel of diplomacy, it's not as outlandish as it could be, is that correct? >> it's not as outlandish as it could be, i agree. >> reporter: taylor was joined at the witness table by top state department official george kent, both men testifying giuliani's shadow diplomacy was running counter to america's national interest. >> what interest do you believe he was promoting, mr. kent? >> i believe he was looking to dig up political dirt against a rival in the next election cycle. >> ambassador taylor, what interest do you believe he was promoting? >> i agree with mr. kent. >> reporter: eager to defend the president, republicans noted they never spoke to the president directly that they were relying on secondhand

information. >> ambassador, you weren't on the call, were you? you didn't listen in on president trump's call, president zelensky's call? >> i was not. >> you never met the president? >> that's correct. >> you had three meetings with zelensky and it didn't come up? >> two of those they had never heard about, as far as i know. there was no reason for it to come up. >> president zelensky never made an announcement? this is what i can't believe, and you're their star witness, you're their first witness. >> reporter: republicans focused on the end result, that the white house did release the hold on that military aid, saying it shows trump did nothing wrong. but democrats say the money only started to flow after congress launched an investigation, and the whistle-blower filed that complaint. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. >> our thanks to mary. president trump claims he doesn't remember the phone conversation mentioned by taylor, but the aide who said he overheard it is now set to speak to lawmakers friday in a closed-door deposition. >> as the president welcomed the leader of turkey to the white

house, he said he had no time to watch the first televised hearings but he continued to rail against the investigation. here's abc's jonathan karl. >> reporter: as the first open impeachment hearing unfolded on capitol hill, the president insisted he wasn't paying attention. >> i'm too busy to watch it, it's a witch hunt, it's a hoax. >> reporter: after it was over, the president in a joint news conference with the president of turkey was asked what he thought of the hearing. >> i hear it's a joke. i haven't watched. i haven't watched for one minute because i've been with the president, which is much more important, as far as i'm concerned. this is a sham. and shouldn't be allowed. >> reporter: he was also asked about bill taylor's new claim that one of his aides overheard president trump asking ambassador gordon sondland about the investigations. >> i know nothing about that, first time i've heard it. the one thing i've seen that sondland said was that he did speak to me for a brief moment, and i said no quid pro quo under any circumstances. and that's true. the other i've never heard this. >> do you recall having a conversation with sondland -- >> i don't recall, no, not at all, not even a little bit. >> reporter: the bottom line

from the white house perspective after the first day of public hearings is nothing has changed, house democrats are still on the road to impeaching the president but not a single republican shows any indication of breaking ranks. that means that without dramatic changes, there is no way that the senate would vote to remove him and the president's fate will ultimately be determined by voters next november. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. and president trump invited turkey's president erdogan to the white house despite objections from democrats and republicans. >> not only did the visit follow turkey's attack on u.s.-backed kurds in syria, erdogan has also been under fire for his crackdown on turkish journalists, jailing dozens of them last year alone. >> a friendly person from turkey, please, friendly, only friendly reporters we like to see, there aren't too many of them around. >> alluding to the crackdown on the press, senator lindsey graham, a trump ally, turned to abc's jonathan karl and said,

that's because there aren't any others left over there. former president jimmy carter is in good spirits after brain surgery. carter's pastor said he was up and walking. the 95-year-old was admitted to the hospital monday to relieve bleeding near his brain. it was caused by at least two falls in recent weeks. carter is the nation's longest living president. no word yet when he might be released from the hospital. now the weather. very cold windchills this morning. 16 in chicago. 27 in atlanta. 20 in boston. those readings will moderate through the day. some relief is on the way tomorrow in chicago and detroit climbing above freezing. looking into next week, warmer than average temperatures are expected across the eastern half of the country, so apparently some relief is coming. >> can't wait for that. a special moment between dads and their daughters is going viral. >> this video shows fathers and

an alabama store clerk brought a broom to a knife fight. security video shows a suspect pull a knife inside a convenience store in birmingham. he jumps over the counter and the clerk backs away. then he grabs the broom to keep the man away. the clerk is okay this morning. the suspect is still on the loose. >> quick thinking. authorities in the dominican republic are investigating the violent death of an american teacher killed in her own home. >> she was found strangled with several personal items missing. here's abc's victor oquendo. >> reporter: authorities in the dominican republic investigating the gruesome murder of american teacher patricia ann anton. the 63-year-old was found strangled inside her apartment on the north side of the island tuesday. police say her hands and feet were tied up. her laptop, tv, phone, and other

items stolen. anton worked at montessori for the past six years, the school saying they are completely heartbroken over the loss. her brother-in-law writing on facebook, she dedicated her life to helping children, her death is a tragedy. officials in the dominican republic are urging anyone with any information to come forward. victor oquendo, abc news, miami beach. >> all right, thanks to victor there. a school bus driver in northwest oregon is in some trouble after being arrested for driving under the influence. >> the 21-year-old driver had 10 students on his bus when he crashed into a ditch. no one on board was hurt. the driver has been suspended by the bus company. now to oklahoma, one man shared his story of having a rare disease and others soon discovered they had it too. five months ago colin mccune told our local affiliate koco about his porphyria diagnosis. he suffered from hallucinations, insomnia, and his hands even stopped working. there's no cure. it took mccune eight years to find out what he had. now at least eight people in oklahoma have the mystery illness. >> that's scary. when we come back, the big moments and the big fashion from last night's cma awards.

now he's at max mission, a nonprofit dog rescue that helps dogs with special needs. after a trip to the vet, doctors say narwhal is healthy and quote there's no reason at this time for the unicorn tail to be removed. the little guy going viral thanks to a tweet from we rate dogs, tweeting his pictures to their 8.5 million followers, rating narwhal a solid 14 out of 10. the account also reminding folks to always read the instructions before assembling your puppy. you know, the tail on the forehead thing. as for the million-dollar question, does narwhal's extra tail wag? not yet but it doesn't need to. one look at the pup tells you he's plenty happy. though he looks like a canine/unicorn mixture, narwhal is thought to be part dachshund, part beagle.
