school began and say it was the shooter's 16th birthday. >> i just yelled at my teacher. i said we got to lock the doors right now. >> reporter: according to investigators it took only 16 seconds for the teen to pull a gun out of his backpack, shoot several students and then pull the gun on himself. students rushing to place the chairs against the doors for security. just as they've practiced in lockdown drills so many times. >> it was just a normal thursday. woke up, got ready. our biggest problem was, you know, about the dance on saturday and, you know, whether you forgot to do your homework or not and then all of a sudden it's life or death. >> reporter: moments after the shots rang out the first responders on the scene were three off-duty law enforcement personnel. they had just dropped off their own children at the school. one arrived at the shooting scene in mere seconds. >> he had just dropped off a family member at the school and was exiting driving away from the school along the perimeter when he saw all the children

running away from the sound of the gunfire and he turned aroun familiar scene. students walking single file out of school their hands in the air. anguished parents rushing to the school. prepared for a day like this. even setting up an emergency meeting place. the two victims killed include a 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy. three other students were wounded. the gunman overnight listed in grave condition. police searching the shooter's home and investigating a disturbing message on instagram. >> it says, saugus, have fun at school tomorrow. >> reporter: the fbi is also investigating the shooter's background. officials say there's no reason to believe he was acting on behalf of any group or ideology. the motive, still unclear. officials say there's no indication of any link between the shooter and the victims leaving the community struggling to find answers. >> as parents you go to work every day to poi for these kids and the last thing you want to

know is they've taken a bullet. they're just kids trying to get an education. >> and a music teacher is being called a hero. that teacher barricaded the classroom with a piano to help a 14-year-old girl who was shot in the hip and shoulder. we'll hear from her later on "good morning america." well, we also know that schools will be open again today in roanoke, virginia, despite an ongoing manhunt for a marine wanted for murder. 22-year-old michael brown is accused of fatally shooting his mother's boyfriend. he hasn't been seen for nearly a week now. authorities fanned out in roanoke after receiving a suspicious call about a suspect. their search came up empty. police say brown should be considered armed and dangerous turning now to washington and the impeachment hearings resuming this morning with the testimony from the former u.s. ambassador to ukraine who was forced out of her job. marie yovanovitch is heading to capitol hill after president trump took direct aim at earlier witnesses. he told supporters in louisiana last night that top diplomats who testified earlier this week are, quote, never trumpers. that came hours after house

speaker nancy pelosi accused him of bribery. abc's elizabeth hur has the details from capitol hill. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: janai, good morning to you and, yes, today we will hear from marie yovanovitch who says she felt threatened by president trump and was blindsided when she was forced out of her post. this morning, the impeachment showdown resuming with former ambassador to ukraine, marie yovanovitch, taking center stage. in an earlier closed door deposition, yovanovitch testified that she was warned by ukrainian officials to watch her back. that president trump's personal attorney, rudy giuliani and his associates had plans and that they were going to, you know, do things including to me. yovanovitch says in an effort to save her job, she turned to the ambassador to the eu, gordon sondland, the president's point man on ukraine. she told house investigators, and he said, you know, you need to go big or go home.

tweet out there that you support the president. yovanovitch refused. a few weeks later she says she was told to get on the next plane home. this comes as democrats continue to build their case against the president with speaker pelosi now calling trump's actions involving ukraine bribery and an impeachable offense. >> the bribe is to grant or withhold military assistance in return for a public statement of a fake investigation into the elections. that's bribery. >> reporter: but president trump maintains he did nothing wrong at a rally last night in louisiana blasting the first two witnesses, career diplomats, who kicked off the public hearings on wednesday. >> two never trumpers. what exactly do you think you impeach him for? and they stood there and went like, what? but their unraveling and their sinister plans will fail. >> reporter: well, also testifying today but in private

is david holmes, a state department staffer who claims he overheard president trump on the phone with sondland asking about the investigations. janai. >> all right, elizabeth hur there on capitol hill for another historic day and our live coverage of today's hearing begins at 9:00 a.m. eastern here on abc and our live streaming channel abc news live. eight people have reportedly been detained in connection with the murder of an american teacher. patricia anton was found dead in her apartment in the dominican republic tuesday. one man reportedly taken into custody is a maintenance worker at her apartment complex. she moved into building days before she was tied up and advantaginged during an apparent robbery. this is what they'll talk about around the water cooler at work. three players were ejected after a nasty fight during the thursday night football game between the steelers and the browns. look at this, with eight seconds left, cleveland's myles garrett ripped off the helmet of pittsburgh's mason rudolph and hit him with him. that sparked a wild brawl which included garrett being kicked in

a car in slovenia as you see here veering into the side of a truck forcing it over the guardrail plunging 60 feet. the truck driver was killed. police say the driver of the car was speeding and lost control. the texas high school student brutally beaten by her substitute teacher is now recovering from a brain injury. the 16-year-old says she's afraid to go back to school and isn't comfortable showing her face. she says she was laughing with her friends when the teacher used profanity and told them to shut up. that's when the confrontation escalated. >> and i turned around to my group of friends and said, well, you're not going to make money talking to students like that. and that's when she got up in my face and said, what did you say? i said, i didn't say nothing. and she said, that's what i thought. and she started getting closer to my face, and i told her, get away from me, and she said, or what? what are you going to do about it? >> i'll have much more from that

teen later this morning on "good morning america." that teacher was fired and charged with assault. a new warning about the risk of lasik eye surgery. an estimated 20 million americans have had the procedure which corrects vision by reshaping the cornea. a doctor who once voted to approve the surgery now says it should be banned. he claims the procedure is leading to serious complications for 30% of patients, and he says more than a dozen patients have taken their lives after years of pain. we all know how hard nurses and medical professionals work. they're unsung heroes. now nike is designing a new sneaker just for them. it comes with a special more durable sole. it's also laceless and easier to slip on. nike says it found many nurses walk up to four miles during a single shift. >> we love the nurses. coming soon, twinkies for breakfast. the cereal will lit grocery stores at the end of december. reactions are mixed. one critic citing a report this week saying 98% of children consume too much added sugar every day. debbie downer. others say bring on the

his propellers stopped moving. >> at that point you don't know where the airplane is going. there's houses over here and nobody deserves to pay for my engine failure. >> reporter: he decided to ditch in the lake's waters. when he tried to escape his jacket got tangled in the equipment. easter says he kicked furiously for ten minutes trying to keep his head above water. underwater and with the clock ticking, two kayakers came rushing to his rescue paddling over to help easter keep his head above water until help could arrive. >> i just jumped in and was paddling as fast as i could and i'm turning 60 this month, so it wasn't as easy as it used to be. >> reporter: easter escaped with minor injuries. according to the ntsb, deaths from small plane crashes are on the rise with 393 in 2018 compared to 347 the year before. still, the scarengill no. >> i'm definitely not done flying. i'm not going to keep me out of the sky. one engine failure isn't going to do it with me. >> easter grew up flying with his father who is a private

pilot. the ntsb is now investigating the cause of his crash. a legal victory for transgender students in illinois. they won a four-year fight over gender identity and privacy. a school board in suburban chicago voted to give students access to locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity. the battle began back in 2015 when the district was accused of violating federal law by denying a student who identified as female unrestricted access to the girls locker room. other students are now weighing in on that decision. >> i feel very uncomfortable, and i feel like it's against my rights as a student. >> i think it'll make it a lot safer and feel a lot better definitely more secure for a lot of people including myself. >> the board says the policy only applies to students who officially identify as transgender. oscar winning actress mo'nique is suing netflix claiming race and gender discrimination. she says the company only offered her $500,000 for a one-hour comedy special in 2017. the lawsuit claims that's significantly less than the

money offered to men including dave chappelle and chris rock and the money offered to white women. netflix has responded saying we believe our opening offer to mow novak was fair which is why we will be fighting this lawsuit. in sports, the cheating scandal in major league baseball is expanding. espn reports the league is contacting staffers from the astros and the red sox over allegations that players stole signs from opponents. some members of the red sox played on houston's world series team back in 2017. meanwhile, the mvp awards have been announced. the winners are angels' mike trout and the dodgers' cody bellinger. congratulations. in football this touchdown pass from baker mayfield was the highlight of the 21-17 win over the steelers last night. as we already mentioned the lowlight three players were thrown out in a helmet-swinging fight at the end of the game. suspensions are likely. >> things got ugly quick. up next in "the pulse," a man takes flight and breaks a world speed record.
