>> announcer: now from abc7, live breaking news. that breaking news is in santa clara. it's a sad story tonight. a child has been hit and killed by a train. good evening. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. that accident happened just after 4:00 this afternoon along the union pacific tracks in the area of lafayette street and lau laurel wood road. luz pena is there now. luz, what can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah. santa clara did confirm that the boy is younger than 15 years old. now, as to how this boy was able to make his way onto the tracks, that is still unclear. in this video, we can see santa clara police officers along the union pacific tracks. the train that hit and killed a boy was a passenger train operated by amtrak. santa clara police confirmed that amtrak police are conducting a joint

investigation. again, it's still unclear as to how the boy was able to access this area of the tracks. let's here from captain wahid kazem. >> this afternoon, received a 911 call of a young male juvenile walking near the train tracks in the area of lafayette street over the 101 overcrossing. as our officers were responding to that call, we received a subsequent phone call informing us that the train had struck the male juvenile. upon arrival, we did find the young male juvenile deceased. >> reporter: even though the age of the boy is still unknown, santa clara police did confirm that there was no indication of this being a death by suicide. they're ruling it as an accident. back here live, we did get confirmation from santa clara police that the boy's family was contacted after this incident. in santa clara, luz pena, abc7 news. >> luz, thank you very much for the report.

new tonight, pg&e is monitoring weather conditions to assess the possibility of turning off the power to parts of the bay area next week. the utility has listed wednesday and thursday as elevated when it comes to a power shutoff but emphasizes a lot depends on the weather. on its map, a large swath of the bay area could be affected. abc7 news meteorologist drew tuma will have a closer look at the forecast coming up in weather. tonight we are getting a new look at the damage left behind by a fire that forced seven people from their homes. a fast-moving fire moved through several apartment buildings in san francisco's castro district early this morning. >> it happened between 18th and market streets. the cause of that fire still unknown. reporter cornell barnard said residents had just minutes to get out. >> reporter: flames lit up the early morning sky. two apartment buildings were. >>upaieibor saying get up, get out, the house is on fire. >> reporter: troy boyd and his

neighbors grabbed what they could and got out. >> i got my i.d., my phone, my social security card, shoes, and it was 4:00 in the morning, so i could barely put a thought together. >> when i was in the kitchen and the smoke was coming out, just breathing it. i didn't think about putting a towel over my face or something. >> reporter: the fire broke out directly across the street in the historic castro theater. luckily no damage here. but these two buildings were not so lucky. the fire department said one tenant was trapped on the second floor. >> that individual ended up escaping out the back window. >> reporter: investigators say the fire likely started in the back of this bar and spread to the sushi restaurant next door. >> we went pretty much from just having fire in the back to having both attics fully involved and the fire wanting to push out into this building and this building. >> i opened our back door,me. >> reporter: michael mallory esca the clothes on his back and a pair of sandals. he was later allowed back into his placed this, extensive smok fire, and water damage. both buildings were yellow-tagged by the city. it's unknown when displaced

residents can return home. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc7 news. a man is in jail tonight facing charges in a cold case murder of a north bay woman some 40 years ago. charles sullivan was arrested in arizona. he was extradited to nevada yesterday for the murder of julia woodward of san rafael. her body was found in march of 1979 near reno, and she was last seen at san francisco's airport heading for lake tahoe, where she hoped to find a job and go to school. in 2015, abc7 news spoke with julia's mother who was grieving and wanted answers. >> it's like if your child had cancer, you would know every single thing there was to know about the disease. in this case, you just want to know what happened. you want to be there with her in your mind and, you know, think about what really happened. >> a recent dna analysis led to sullivan's arrest. sullivan is being held without bail. his arraignment is set for tuesday. the owner of an ice cream

shop in san francisco's mission district is offering a $2,000 reward for information after his shop was vandalized for the second time. >> both incidents were captured on surveillance cameras. here's abc7 news reporter lauren martinez. >> reporter: this man is passionate about the ice cream he makes. him and his wife own a store off valencia street. but as you enter the shop, you can't help but see damage. >> we have this horrendous kind of graffiti and scratches on the windows and also this acid that they put on the windows. >> reporter: that apparent acid is now etched all over the storefront, and the suspects who did it were caught on camera. >> the guys that did it were well dressed. they were not just any kid. they were adults. they were young adults. >> reporter: these young adults tagged the storefront in august of 2018, and they didn't stop there. juan says the same kind of

tagging could be seen from 17th street all the way to cesar chavez. >> we're not the only ones but we are the ones that suffered the most damage. >> reporter: in september of this year, the shop was vandalized again. >> this last guy, he actually took pictures of himself to show his friends. >> reporter: juan says they will replace the window next week, which will cost anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000. >> we covered unsop some of the offensive material because we get a lot of moms with their kids. >> reporter: the suspect also glued the front door with some type of seal and glued the lock. he filed a police report for both incidences and now is offering $2,000 for anyone with information that can lead to an arrest. >> we upped to$200,rn b allr fr we'll do 1,000 ice cream cones, and we have a big party when we. stop running from the truth. that was colin kaepernick's

>> reporter: kaepernick's representatives and the nfl at odds over his liability waiver and transparency of the workout. representatives from more than two dozen teams were in attendance at the falcons training facility, but only eight made the trek to kaepernick's chosen location, the nfl no longer dictating the rules. kaepernick stuck to a throwing deals with current and former pro receivers who volunteered to help him out. >> i've been ready. i'm staying ready, and i'll continue to be ready. >> reporter: the nfl releasing a statement saying, we are disappointed that colin did not appear for his workout, adding colin's decision has no effect on his status in the league. he remains an unrestricted free agent eligible to sign with any police brutality and racial inequality. when he became a free agent the following season, no team would sign him. he filed a grievance against the nfl, alleging collusion to keep him out of the league. the two sides eventually

today dozens of people gathered to show their support for detained migrant children. abc7 news was at lake merritt in oakland for the event called the butterfly effect. migration is beautiful. it's a youth-led project in the bay area to raise awareness about the border crisis. 15,000 butterflies were on display, created by community members to represent each child they say is still detained. families were excited to support theient, some as young as 8 and 9 years old. >> we're so inspired by the young people outhere. inuls justo powerful. >> next week, 30 of the organizers and their adult supporters will bring the butterflies to d.c. for universal children's day. in the south bay, demolition

is under way on a popular mall. abc7 news went by the vallco shopping mall in cupertino. you see a big section of the structure has been knocked down. we didn't see anyone working when we were there. this is a much different scene than thursday. a viewer captured crews in action and the dramatic moment a section came toppling down onto the street below. it kicked up some dust and insulation making for quite a spectacle. the company in charge told abc7 news there was no safety risk for the public. however, it is going to review the contractor's work. shifting to the weather now, feeling kind of seasonable for once. >> here's more from meteorologist drew tuma. >> not going to last long. we're tracking numbers bouncing weekend.to finishuthe some spots, 10 to 15 degrees above where they should be for this time. that mild weather continues for another day. clouds banked up along the coastline. visibility at half moon bay has dropped to nearly zero. that is some dense fog along the

a new app developed by stanford grads is connecting senior citizens with student companions, including one retired art teacher living in sunnyvale. ruththy newman is 86 years old and lives at an assisted living center. she heard a talk by one of the co-founders of monday amy and wanted to try it. h ruthie met laura. similar te they visit the museum, have lunch, and paint together. >> for someone who's been teaching for decades, now it's flipped. she's a student. the elderly person being taught by the young person. it's really nice. >> it is so sweet, so useful.
