would have been something tough to prevent. >> b.a.r.t. has identified the victim. riders say there does tend to be an uptick in crime as they struggle to gain the trust of those that use the system every day. >> it's happening a lot at the bart station. >> i always fear about being on public transportation. >> good evening. >> thanks for joining us. just in the past hour, we have learned the suspect in yesterday's stabbing walked away from the hospital earlier in the day. he is now in jail. laura anthony has the latest on that and the investigation. she is live for us in heyward tonight. >> this is where he was arrested late yesterday. we did learn today that he walked away from a hospital just hours before the attack on that

b.a.r.t. car. as for the victim oliver williams his friends tell us it's no surprise that he tried to help. >> tyrone was a beautiful >> she is not surprised the man she knew as her friend and neighbor tyrone gave his life trying to help someone else. >> and that is his nature is to always help people, you know? and i'm really sad to hear that this has happened to him. he's always willing to help anyone in the need of help. >> the 49-year-old williams was stabbed to death on a b.a.r.t. train near the south heyward station. he was killed with his own knife. one he killed in self-defense during an on train altercation with this man, jermaine brown. >> both individuals took it upon themselves to start a fight and it's something that unfortunately happened and somebody lost their lives as a

result of it. >> investigators believe williams intervened when he saw brim trying to steal the shoes of another b.a.r.t. passenger that was asleep at the time. after allegedly trying to steal a mini van from a nearby car dealership. >> abc 7 news learned that brim was the object of an unspecified medical call in oakland about 12 hours before and he was transported to san leandro hospital where he quote walked away sometime during the morning. >> a good samaritan stepped up to try to diffuse the situation on the train and he ends up being a person that loses his life. and that's very sad. >> now we don't know exactly why those paramedics picked up brim just after 12:30 in the morning yesterday in oakland or whether he was placed on some kind of hold at that san leandro hospital or perhaps he was

simply free to leave. all of that is part of the on going investigation. >> laura, thank you so much. >> now are these incidents as rare as b.a.r.t. tries to portray them and what is the solution? >> great question. live from the mcarthur station with some answers from the general manager of b.a.r.t., leann. >> today the general manager did one of his station tours where he talks to people about the system. now people told us that safety is one of their main concerns. >> the fact that the stabbing occurred around 1:00 in the afternoon is troubling enough. there have been on b.a.r.t. three people died. don stevens 47 was the victim of a violent assault allegededly by this man at the station.

he received a laceration and died two days later from an infection. and nia wilson was the victim of an unprovoked attack. after her murder then b.a.r.t. police chief was quoted as saying this is really an anomaly and now the current b.a.r.t. police chief seemed to come up with the same conclusion regarding yesterday's stabbing. >> this is very tragic and rare on b.a.r.t. >> today there's more cameras on b.a.r.t. trains because following the 2016 shooting death of the 19-year-old it was revealed that 70% of the cameras were fake. that's why there are only 2 videos taken of the alleged suspect who has yet to be found. >> do you say this is not an anomaly? >> i would like to say i'd never say that. i think this is rare.

i would go back that b.a.r.t. is a very safe system. >> is hiring more officers part of the solution? currently there's 168 sworn officers and 45 supervisors that sometimes respond to emergencies. the goal, b.ar.t. says, is to hire more officers. >> i'm hearing from the riders that they would like to see an additional presence in the system. walking the trains and on the platforms. >> and b.a.r.t. also says cameras have been a big detur deturrent and helpful in incidents like we saw yesterday because they revealed so much information. >> so are you concerned about b.a.r.t. in anyway? we welcome your ideas. building a better b.a.r.t. is

part of building a better bay area. >> pg and e is continuing to monitor dangerous weather conditions as it considers shutting off power for more residents in the foothills. they turned off power to 48,000 customers in portions of colusa, glenn, lake, shasta, sonoma and yolo counts. there's good news and bad news for napa >> the wind and fire risk were not as high as pg and e anticipated. they have their power cutoff. fewer than in the two recent shut offs at the end of october. while the city of napa was spared, more rural areas were not. they went dark just after 7:00 this morning. the community resource center at this golf course opened. the quaint business district

still has power depending on where your store is. power was restored on one side of the business district by pg and e's own emergency generators. not enough juice to service the other side of town. the pharmacy was on the lucky side. the generators are a god send. >> this town is so dependent on tourism and people coming into town that it was killing the businesses every time someone did this. >> many business owners bought their own generators. this gas station has a small one that only powers it's frozen food containers. the store is dark and the gas pump is off. the popular southern barbecue restaurant is just across the street. the owner got a city permit and installed this large generator with enough power to keep his business going. >> you must be happy about that. >> very happy. that's one of my best

investments. >> even if it cost him more than $40,000 to buy and install the generator. abc 7 >> let's go to the south bay where they're about to go out of their way to pinpoint a mysterious odor. past studies failed to pinpoint the sources for this. it's a bit of a mystery. david says this time the instruments will fingerprint the offensive look at the frequency and concentration of the odors. it will be collected at the boundaries of several sources. including the landfil and the regional waste water treatment plant. they'll also be taken in various neighborhoods. the odor is driving some people to move

>> this is pretty interesting. u.s. law enforcement agencies want to get access to your information. today uber reported a 26% jump in legal demands for riders data in 2018 and almost three quarters of those cases uber gave up the information. the rise in demand for rider data is partly due to the company's growth but also from the rising interest of governments to access customer data. those using the app testing service need to make sure that they're running the very latest version of the app. it features a major security flaw. posing as an innocent video file and then they can take partial control of the device. in this instance the bug does not appear to have impacted
