the suspect was arrested shortly after. since the attack, bart has promised to increase staffing. >> we put that to the test today. kris reyes rode several stains and stopped at multiple stations looking for police officers. find out what she saw in just a few minutes. >> let's go live to abc7 news reporter laura anthony. the victim's family spoke only with her, about their loss and their greatest frustration. laura? >> hi. first of all, there was a very brief court hearing here in dublin this afternoon. the families of both the suspect and the victim sat just a few rows from each other. as for that latter family of oliver tyrone williams, they're coming to term what happened tuesday afternoon on that bart train. >> it upsets me that he was the only person on that bart that -- that gave their heart to protect somebody else. >> reporter: the family of the man who died trying to prevent a theft on bart says they don't understand why no one else on

the train jumped to his aid before oliver tyrone williams was fatally stabbed. >> my heart is truly broken over this. it breaks my heart that this goes on bart trains and there is no police patrolling these things. >> reporter: bart confirms that the fight between williams and suspect gejermaine brim was fir reported to them as the train left the station tuesday afternoon, and that officers responded one stop later at south hayward. williams intervened when the shoeless brim allegedly tried to steal the shoes from another sleeping passenger. williams was killed with his own knife. did you know he would have carried something as self-protection perhaps? >> protection. the world is crazy. that's why he carried it. that's why he had a knife, for protection. >> reporter: brim made his first court appearance, covering his face and hiding behind a wall. he is charged with five felonies, including first-degree murder, carjack and theft.

williams' family was seated in the courtroom to represent the brother they lost so suddenly. >> he was the one that kept our family together, and he's always told me to always tell people that you love them before you hang up the phone. because you never know when you're not going to see them again. >> reporter: now brim is expected back in court here on december 5th. yesterday we learned that he had walked away from a san leandro hospital just hours before the stabbing. today we learned through court documents that he was actually released on his own recognizance in a felony case out of san francisco when this incident occurred. live in dublin, laura anthony, abc7 news. >> laura, you mentioned that case. do we know specifically the charges that brim is facing in san francisco? >> well, we learned late today, larry, through sources in san francisco that he was facing two felony charges and two misdemeanor charges related to the negligent discharge of a

firearm some time in san francisco, an incident that occurred over this past summer. >> all right. laura anthony reporting live in dublin, thank you. the stabbing death was top of mind for passengers and staff at this morning's bart board meeting. the meeting started with a moment of silence for oliver tyrone williams. and then it was time for public comment. news station agent suzanne gambel told about watching nearly 30 people an hour jump the fare gates, and about a scary experience she recently had at the south hayward station. >> i called the police on a man who was chasing a woman on to the train in south hayward. he hurdled the gates to get at her. >> the bart board has selected new fare gates, but right now is looking for funding. building a safer bart is part of building a better bay area. after tuesday's stabbing, bart announced it would add more police as well as community service officers and fare inspectors on platforms and trains. abc7 news reporter kris reyes

station this week, the murder that took place? >> yeah, because it's been happening more and more often. >> i carry pepper spray. i carry a screwdriver that is this long. i have a stun gun on me because i take bart every day, and especially when i come on bart at night, i'm always watching. i watch everything, even not for myself, but for other people as well. >> i just got off the phone with bart officials. we're waiting to see if we can get an on-camera interview. they did tell me there is not only increased security personnel on their system, there are more police officers. we spotted our first bart police right there. i will tell you this. every rider that we've spoken to, they have not seen any increased security. >> and so why did kris not see many police officers? bart provided this explanation. all patrol officers are required to ride trains during each shift. we also have a team of officers

who are dedicated to riding trains during the peak of commute. there are as many as 58 trains in service. most shifts are staffed with about 30 officers. so we do not have enough officers to be on every train. we rely on our bart customers to be our eyes and ears to reported illegal activity. our officers will respond. >> so what do you want to see on bart? better transit? part of building a better bay area? share ideas by joining our building a better bay area group on facebook. an international incident. the abc7 news i team has learned trial for two bay area teenagers achilling an italian police officer will begin next year. the lawyer informed dan noise that the trial has been fast tracked for february 26th. elder gabriel accused of stabbing an officer.

dan noyes spent days in rome covering this story. you can look back on his reports at abc7 news news.com/i-team. pg&e says it is making progress for restoring electricity for all the people left in the dark by the latest power safety shutoffs. almost all of today's outages affected people in the north bay. we're talking napa, solano and in calistoga, people had their electricity restored around 1:30 this afternoon. many residents hope this is the last power shutoff that they will endure for a long time. some of them now own generators after dealing with these multiple outages during the past two months. >> we turn on the generator, but then it doesn't generate certain areas of the house. i have to go spend $58 yesterday at steve's hardware to get more extension cords. >> it makes a lot of difference. we've got things like fish tanks and things like that that need to keep going. >> some homes and businesses still are without power. pg&e hopes to have their electricity back on later this evening. those power shutoffs, they're all weather-related.

and reactions, i realized i didn't have a lot of answers for something that was so important and affecting so many families in the bay area. >> the obvious place to come to get the big picture was hamilton families. last year the nonprofit helped 700 families. according to their records, when they leave hamilton, 87% of families are stabilized after one year of being placed in permanent housing. so she got the information she needed for her daughter, and today she and her husband paid it forward, donating $500,000. google.org also gave another $850,000. >> for a total of $1.35 million to boost the work of hamilton families. [ applause ] >> even with two incomes, the reality is that families can sometimes end up on the streets. >> people who have been working minimum wage jobs are not able to find affordable housing in the bay area.

fremont residents expressed concern during our monday town hall about too much urbanization and how that might change some of their historic district. so we went to get some answers to their questions. abc7 news reporter david louie explores the city's plan to be, quote, strategically urban. >> there is construction under way all over fremont, which concerns some residents who attended the abc7 news town hall meeting on monday. our phil matier read one of the questions submitted. >> we talk about a lot of special districts in the area, and how are you going to preserve them? >> irvington is one of those special districts, which dates back to the gold rush era and was later incorporated into fremont. it retains an old west feel at its crossroads known as five corners. fremont's community development director says fremont's identity is to be strategically urban with a new focus on housing such as the warm springs bart >> the more suburban parts of fremont don't need to change dramatically over time. they'll change some over time there will be some new

development. but really, the bulk of development will be focused in these key locations. >> people who live and work in irvington say there is a need for housing, but the kind of housing going up tends to be multihousing units. and they bemoan that it's changing the character of the community. they work at tangles salon in the heart of irvington. >> you're losing the feeling of your neighborhood and being able to talk to each other. and everything is just so fast-paced. >> a family store and restaurants and all those things have been demolished, and they're building all the high density housing where there is no sense of community. >> yes, urbanization is happening across fremont, but residents of the irvington, niles, and center districts will be watching closely. in fremont, david louie, abc7 news. the east bay used to be home to a large number of blue collar jobs, but over the years, the rise of tech, most of those jobs have gone away. still, it turns out new manufacturing jobs are available.

there just aren't enough people trained to do them. now a new program in fremont may have the solution, and it's one that could be used as a model nationwide. abc7 news reporter liz kreutz has the story. >> in silicon valley, fremont is the capital for advanced manufacturing. it's where tesla has its factory. but for those businesses looking to hire, they're running into a big problem. >> my name is brian paper. i'm the chief operating officer at bay area circuits. it's important for us to be a manufacturer located in silicon valley because that's where all of our customers are. but that comes with its challenges. and up with of those is labor. >> on top of an aging and retiring workforce, manufacturing jobs are changing. and because of that, companies can't find people to fill those jobs. >> when we bring students in to our facility, their impression is that they're going to see people standing on an assembly line turning a wrench. that's really not what it is anymore. >> that's where fremont's eloni community college comes in. >> hi, you're recording already!

>> this is a professor of electrical engineering and a head of the manufacturing programs, specifically tailored to train students in new manufacturing. >> welcome to our makeshift lab. >> she took us into her classroom, a temporary portable until the college's new building opens next year. >> so that's a line filling robot. >> inside students are learning how to operate robots and 3-d printers. >> i know there is misconception with smart manufacturing, people are going to lose their jobs, robots are taking over the world. but that's a real stereotypical fallacy. >> what made you realize we need to start a program like this? >> well, we are here in fremont, and fremont is the manufacturing hub of the silicon valley. and we were constantly getting told by companies around in fremont hey, we need a program to train technicians. yes, we have engineers, but we don't have technician eloni is community college in california with this kind of program. they have a partnership with

issue of the biden investigation. >> and the president's message to his party has been clear. stay tough. hold the line of defense. he believes that these hearings are unfair, but democrats say they are moving forward with tis investigation with or without the cooperation of the white house. rachel scott, abc news, capitol hill. massachusetts lawmakers passed a bill today banning the sale of flavored vaping and tobacco products that law would also cover menthol cigarettes. if approved by the governor, the bill would also levee a 75% excise tax on vaping products. it would help pay for counseling to help people stop using tobacco. the governor has not indicated whether he will sign this ban, but the republican governor temporarily banned the sale of videotaping products when he declared a public health emergency in september. it took four years to reunite a california man with his dog after it was stolen then found across the country in florida. >> oh my goodness. >> look at maggie, the bulldog. sarasota police found maggie

as we head to black friday, thoughts turn to holiday shopping and toys for children. a consumer group has put out its annual trouble in toy land report. >> toys have become much safer, yet a quarter million families went to the african american last year after a little one swallowed a toy. >> 7 on your side's michael finney is here. >> they put this out every year, and it's a good warning to keep in mind. i toys bring so much fun and development, but can they also

pose a threat? several products in a report saying some toys can harm children evein wto ng way. watch out for. playing with slime, stretching, twisting, smashing can be fun, creative, calming. just don't eat it. >> it has very high concentrations of boron. >> of the california public interest research group says four brands of slime were found to contain boron, a material made of borax which can cause nausea and vomiting. >> it says here do not eat. it could be dangerous. >> however, some kids might not resist the temptation to try. >> so here you can see very very light-up. this toy registered at 87 decibels, far too loud for the youngest child. >> if it's annoying to you, it's probably not good for your kids either.
