a south bay pet owner says her young pup died after what should have been a routine

grooming. she says petco is responsible. tonight a special group of students graduates high school. we'll explain the struggles they over came and the message they have for the community. i'm cornell bernard in the north bay. new trains, more stops and less waiting time for passengers. it could be a game changer with the smart train. abc 7 news starts right now. that breaking news tonight comes in the shooting degs of five people in orinlda on halloween night. federal agents have now linked a gun seized to other deaths in the bay area. >> the atf is also offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to arrests or convictions in the orinda case. >> tonight's announcement follows the decision by prosecutors to release five men arrested in connection with the shooting. they were captured in raids

around the bay area last week. developing news out of san jose, police have surrounded a home they believe a suspect might be barricaded inside. the scene is a few blocks west of oak grove high school. oak grove is the same school that reopened today after a suspicious device was found on campus tuesday. the incident forced students to shelter in place while the bomb squad examined the object. school officials then decided to cancel classes alt oak grove yesterday. an owner is requesting petco do better. >> she left her dog to be groomed and now she's grooming his death. >> reporter: the name filting for this young pomeranian pup just six months old. he was due for a grooming. >> we met another dog and he just started chasing the dog.

>> reporter: what should have been a routine wash, dry and nail trip turned tragic. she returned an hour later to learn she was sent for breathing issues. records show she came in stressed and lethargic after grooming. the veterinarian found fluid in his lungs. he didn't sewer vive. she said she questioned petco and said they refused to provide detail about what happened during the care. petco said in part after a thorough review we strongly believe that our groomer acted appropriately throughout the grooming process but regret that a veterinarian was unable to determine a definitive cause for his passing. she admits she didn't initially want an autopsy. now it's far too late. dali has been cremated. >> i wish i did it. maybe it's not accurate but i'll

buzzing along. >> reporter: but for many the morning and evening schedule has been frustrating often with large gaps in between trains leaving riders like nicole waiting. >> if we don't get exactly the right ferry to match with the train you have to take a cab and then you have to wait. it gets expensive. >> reporter: for perez his commutes to his job. >> right now i get out at 5:30, those are the short days. so it's kind of almost two hours. >> reporter: smart has been listening and will soon add more trains and a new schedule. every 32 minutes during the morning and evening commutes. >> it's really going to i think open up the schedule for individuals who wanted to ride smart but it didn't work with their schedule. we now have a solution. >> reporter: also the mayor of nevato where a new downtown station will open in december. the awaited 2 mile $50 million extension will also open in

several weeks putting ferry service in reach. >> i think people are eager for commute alternatives. >> it's carried 1.5 billion passengers. right now specific dates for the opening in december of those new stations. but the new schedule takes effect january 1st. new details we learned today the suspect aboard a deadly stabbing had been in custody for a felony charge in san francisco but was released. germane brim appeared in court today and was charged with murder in tuesday's stabbing death of tyrone williams. williams' brother was heartbroken. >> he was a hero for what he did. he gave his life for somebody else. >> his family has setup a gofundme page to pay for his funeral. we have a link to it on

has been utilizing its strategic location in silicon valley to deploy technology amid growing demand for service and to attract new officers. >> i'm kimberley peterson and i'm the chief of police with the fremont police department. i've been here about 23 years. >> reporter: she overseas an agency of about 180 officers and 115 staff members to advance its crime fighting mission. as fremont's population has grown its dispatch center has seen more calls for service. over 127,000 calls just in the first half of the year. one third of them were 911 emergency calls. as officer focus on combating residential and home burglaries departments everywhere are competing for ree kruts. with the help of consultant fremont police created this eye-catching recruitment site designed to appeal to millennials. >> we're really targeting that audience that is really tech

savvy and doing a majority of their communications on their mobile device. >> reporter: the success of the micro site is still being evaluated. jasmine is in her fourth week on the street with field training officer. her hiring is a reflection of the diversity the department is seeking to mirror the fremont community. a noncheck incentive is also being tested to attract applicants. >> we currently have a $10,000 signing bonus. it's hard to determine right now how much that is incentivizing people to come through. >> reporter: the department also has a wellness program and a large fitness facility where officers can work out for an hour while on duty. however, technology remains a focus. for example, fremont police want resident support to add drones specifying they're not for random surveillance and not equipped as a weapon. it has access to security cameras and parking lots to deter break-ins. while creating a registry of
