>> a young woman talks about being with oliver williams and in his final moments. she hopes his family find comfort in the fact he was not alone when he died. >> good evening. >> williams was killed on a bart train earlier this week. it happened when he tried to stop a sleeping homeless man from having his shoes stolen. >> we spoke with the woman there when it all happened. >> that's right. i spoke to 22 year-old nursing student. right here on the college campus. she tried to save the life of a man on bart. he eventually died of stab wounds. she's a frequent rider. she's also wheelchair bound and legally deaf. she got on the train that day she got a really uneasy feeling about a barefoot man who got on the train with her. >> his behavior was erratic. and i just kind of got

uncomfortable. >> she saw the shoeless man enter the train car and tried to steal a shoe from a sleeping homeless man. the fellow bart passenger williams jumped up and told him don't take the shoe. the man left and returned demanding williams give him the shoes. when he refused he started beating him up. >> the attacker had him pinned down and they were wrestling over the knife. as soon as we reached hayward the attacker fled. i dropped my phone and no longer in contact with emergency services. and i happened to have medical gloves on and i jumped out of my chair and tried to slow the bleeding. by putting pressure on the stab wounds one on the back of his neck and multiple on his left side. and we waited for emergency services to come.

i tried to speak to him. asking him questions about so you're a raiders fan he was wearing raiders clothes. he was responding. >> he was talking to you? >> yes. he was conscious and mostly coherent right up until emergency services came. >> you were holding your hand on his throat? >> one hand on the back of his neck. there was a stab wound. and the other hand like this on the multiple on the side of the neck. >> how many times was he stabbed? >> i'm not positive. i estimate five to ten. >> she also told me that living through that event confirmed her choice of her nursing career. bart. she's already ridden on tras t tuesday. >> she was awfully brave.

according to the state department of justice serious crimes like homicide rape and robbery doubled on bart in the last four years. 234 incidents in 2015. 481 last year. one of those was the killing of wilson. the 18 year-old stabbed to death at the station july 22. today, her accused killer entered a plea. >> his lawyers weren't in court made what many already expected. he will argue he was mentally ill when the killing took place. she was stabbed in the neck in july last year. her sister was wounded in the same attack. her parents spoke about koul after the hearing. >> he's realizing that reality is setting in. and what they're attempting to

do for us. pleading insanity. will not fall in his favor. i think he's realizing that. >> also today he spoke in court. in a brief but testy exchange when the judge told him he had a right to trial in 60 days but didn't hear the response. and asked it again. >> i never heard him say anything before since the proceedings. i never heard him speak. >> it was strange and weird. >> the judge dismissed a motion to have the charges thrown out. her mom said it was tough listening to that after losing her daughter. >> it gets harder. you carry somebody all that time. and in the blink of an eye they're gone. >> he wanted a speedy trial and the judge obliged. it's set for january 6. he faces life in prison without parole.
