i'm amanda del castillo. a projectile hits a school bus full of high school football players. the warning from chp. there's a new e. coli outbreak alert. the cdc is advising consumers not to eat romaine lettuce from a specific place in california. >> if you're flying home for thanksgiving you better hustle. what to busiest travel weekend of the year. they seem to happen in like spurts, and it's very concerning. >> developing news, one student is hurt after a projectile hits a bus full of high school football players traveling to a game in san jose. >> happened on 101 in monterey county near prunedale.

it was one of two vehicles struck tonight. amanda? >> reporter: dan, ama, a little more than 72 miles separates the high school here. that 7:00 kick off was pushed back because of that projectile. this brings the total to 40 similar incidents along that stretch of 101. projectiles prundale. six minutes later another hit a bus full of carmel high school football players. >> you're always concerned when kids are traveling and a bun of people on a bus. and all it takes is one small mistake and a bunch of people can get hurt. >> reporter: approximately 20 people were on the bus. one student suffered minor

injuries from broken glass. the chp says this is far from the first case of flying projectiles. >> we had a rash of nine during the week of halloween. and now with these two incidents it now brings the cases to a total of 40. >> reporter: 40 since february. despite the danger student spirit was high. >> it was shocking at first, but they said everyone's safe and everyone's ready to play. >> reporter: but there was real worry. the chp doesn't know who's behind these projectiles and the potential for real danger is keeping people who pass through prundale on edge. >> they seem to happen in spurts. it'll happen tonight and won't happen for a while. and it's very concerning. >> reporter: and the chp is not disclosing what those objects are. if this happens to you you should immediately pull over in a safe spot and call 911 because

doing so will allow officers to pinpoint exactly where this is happening. >> okay, thanks very much. happening now san jose police just lifted evacuation orders for a neighborhood near oak grove high school. >> officers have been working to neutralize several suspected explosives found inside the home of this man. >> he had police on a long standoff and caused a real headache for neighbors. >> people were telling me, hey, stay inside, don't go outside. wake up this morning it's still the same thing. don't come outside, stay away. that's how the south san jose resident describes the commotion after police surrounded the neighbor's apartment thursday evening. officers swarmed the neighborhood. some neighbors evacu that neighbor identified by police as 36-year-old andrew white surrendered. when officers went inside they found what investigators believed to be several

improvised explosive devices. police are looking into whether he's the person who planted an explosive device on the campus near oak grove campus a few days earlier. >> it's pretty crazy and right in our area. >> reporter: police say evacuations will remain in place until the bomb squad gives the all clear for everyone to return. new developments. two men have been arrested amid the investigation into the halloween night shooting that left five people dead at an airbnb rental in orinda. they're both facing felony possession of firearm charges as well as other charges. the atf helped execute the cern warrants. they've also announced a $20,000 reward for information in the case. for the third halloween season in a row leafy greens may once again be missing from your dining table. >> tonight the cdc is warning consumers to toss out their

romaine lettuce over e. coli fears. >> the lettuce in question was harvested in solinnas, is that right? >> and we know at least 40 people from 16 states have been infected with e coal. coli. do not eat it, the cdc's advice to dispose of any romaine lettuce. it may contain e. e. e. more than 70,000 pounds of produce that contains meat or poultry has been recalled due to this possible contamination. they're still investigating and don't have a responsible growing or supplier. >> we don't have a clue right now. all we know based on the salad that was unopened and still in the individual persons refrigerator that tested

positive for e. coli marked coming from the solinas region. >> reporter: food and safety lawyer bill marler is representing several of the infected and said the fda needs to implement better environmental controls. >> it's really not a bug to mess with. you know, it sickens about 75,000 americans every year, kills about a hundred. but leaves sometimes thousands of people with kidney damage, bowel damage, brain damage. >> now if you're buying romaine lettuce at a store make sure to read the label showing where the romaine lettuce was grown before purchasing. we have a full list of recall products that you can check out. happening now, the holiday travel crunch is on.

today was expect today be the busiest day for san francisco airport. travelers are trying to take the crowds in stride as best they can. >> reporter: that's right. good evening, guys. you can see the crowd behind me is pretty thin, but they'll be full. i took a walk through here about an hour ago and super crowded. posted that photo on twitter, by the way. here's the numbers just at sfo. today 171,000 travelers. from now until december 1st, 1.2 milli 1.2 million. >> san diego thanksgiving flying back from college missed my flight. one nht traveling on thanksgiving. newly weds certainly learned their lesson. >> tsa precheck every time. >> and always carry on. even if you have to pack as lightly as possible, carry on.

airlines before you leave home and don't forget your passport. thank you. and a warning for drivers planning to cross the bay bridge this weekend, three out of the five lanes in both directions will be closed for what cal trans calls routine maintenance. here's a couple of live views of it traffic on the bridge. looking good right now. on sunday westbound lane closures start at 9:00 p.m. all lanes should reopen by 5:00 a.m. monday. new at 11:00, famed san francisco bakery tartin has closed its location because of rodent. inspectors found mice droppings in a prep room and on top of bags of flour. a sign-on the door read the bakery would be closed through sunday. it has four other locations in the bay area.

christmas celebrations are getting under way. a 55 foot christmas tree was lit up for the first time this season in oakland's jack london square. it's decorated with 5,000 lights and 600 ornaments for the holidays. this 50 foot tree has hosted 14,000 ornaments and lights. and in san francisco an annual tradition made its debut at macy's union square. macy teams up with the spca for animals up for adoption. the display will be up through new year's day. >> well, they'll get a front row seat to the rain next week. >> which we're finally talking about. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. >> it's absolutely terrific news, and they will have a front row seat and not actually get wet. here's a live picture right now from our exploratorium camera.

through 12 feet through tomorrow 5:00 p.m. the first opportunity for rain is tuesday. afternoon, evening it gets wet here. the see era starts to see snow. we are talking about the wet weather continuing on wednesday. it's a cold storm out of the gulf of alaska and that's going to keep the showers going at least through thanksgiving possibly into friday. if you are traveling this is going to impact holiday travelers around the state of california. in terms of our rainfall totals most of you will be between a quarter to about three quarters of an inch. but some places could be talking close to an inch of rain with that storm. tudays promptd a f afternoon in the sierra and difficulty traveling certainly possible. snow could be accumulating down through the foothills so definitely watch out. i want to show you a snow
